Sergio was one of the Greatest Bodybuilders of All Time! I knew he was sick for the last year or so and not feeling good. I tried to get him to come out to the contest I promote in Chicago but he wouldn't come because he was so thin and he didn't want people to see him like that. I was very fortunate to see him in his peak and he was an incredible sight to see. That's why he was called "The Myth". RIP Sergio!

RIP big man.

Sergio was bigger than life. Bigger than our sport. I met him in the mid 80s when a posing appearance went bad when another BB went on stage and attempted a pose down. He held his dignity quietly, leaving the stage. Then the promoter gave him only half of the fee because he left the stage. I drove him and his wife to the airport afterwards. He showed class staying above the fray.

I remember as a teen seeing a contest on tv.Maybe the Olympia I don`t recall but Arnold beat Sergio and a lot of people thought Sergio should have won. They showed the award presentation and had the top 3 getting their medals.A hot girl in a bikini gave the third place winner his award and gave him a kiss on the lips. Now at this time...the early 70`s a white girl would be frowned upon kissing a black man. This girl gave Sergio his medal and you could tell there was some awkwardness as she wasn`t sure if she should kiss him or not.Well Sergio took the initiative and reaches down and shakes the girls hand and takes his medal completely diffusing the situation.I have heard good stories and bad about Sergio through the years but on this day I thought he showed a lot of class.

That was probably the 1970 Mr. World contest in Columbus, Ohio. That was shown on ABC's Wide World of Sports.

The very first bodybuilding contest I ever saw at 13 years old had Sergio as a guest poser. He lived in Chicago where I lived so I would see him all the time at the local competitions. I remember I was in awe of all the bodybuilders when I was watching my first contest. When Sergio came out, he didn't even look real. He had a big afro and gold posing trunks. He hit the front double biceps pose first and his arms looked bigger than his head and his V taper went down to a tiny, tiny waist. He was incredible! After he posed, he came back out onstage wearing a big, white robe and sat on a stool in the middle of the stage with a microphone answering questions from the audience. It was in the city in Chicago so a great majority of the audience was Hispanic and Black. This Hispanic guy sitting in front of me yelled out, "Hey Sergio, what sign are you man?" LOL. Someone asked Sergio if he used machines or free weights and he replied, "Free weights, no macheens, just free weights". I remembered that when I did my training routines and I always favor free weights over machines. Sergio was one in a million and probably had the best genetics in the bodybuilding world. I saw his son compete at the NPC Nationals over the weekend and, although he looks good, he just doesn't have the same freaky, freaky genetics that Sergio had. We will always remember him!

RIP " The Myth"...saw Sergio Posing and sat at his seminar in Melbourne in the 80s ....He was mindbpgling to say the least...wide...wide shoulders tiny waist....He may not have had the hardness and seperation that todays pros have attained. but his shape still remains unsurpassed, Flex wheeler a close second on that score........He was a "King" of Bodybuilding......it would be interesting to see Sergio Jnr or maybe his grandchildren have the same attributes as he had been given...truly a freak of nature.

I had the fortunate opportunity to meet Sergio on three occasions, but the most memorable was at the 1995 Olympia in Atlanta. It was a magic weekend anyway with Yates, Levrone, Nasser, Ray, Taylor and Cormier making up the top six........with Flex Wheeler in 8th and Ronnie C. 11th!
But what I remember most was a moment when ALL the previous Mr. Olympia winners were brought on stage during the evening event with Joe Weider doing a short interview with each of them. I was working for FLEX magazine at the time and I stood backstage and chatted with Sergio for a few minutes before they went on stage. I found him to be friendly and always a gentleman. It's now a startling dose of reality that we can never again share that moment where all the Mr. O winners can meet again.

Rip! Very sad to see a legend die.

I think what makes us all feel better is the amazing coverage on Rx and other pages to this legend's passing. It's like the whole page just stopped dead in its tracks and paid this Great Champion a true tribute. Right? ... I mean this thread is WILDLY popular; why I could barely get in here.

I wonder what's received more coverage, Sergio's passing or the last Bros v. Pros Challenge? Please forgive me for questioning reality.

I saw this on the Iron History website today:

"Growing up I thought Sergio was a villain, it seemed that way to my young mind from reading Muscle Builder at any rate. I was easily influenced as puberty was starting to kick in...and believing in the Easter Bunny was that far removed. Years later in 2004 when Shawn Perine introduced us at the Arnold Classic Expo the image I had forged in my mind was instantly erased as I met a man bubbling over with personality and ready smile. Throughout the weekend I can remember being so frustrated that there were lines waiting to get their picture taken with a fitness babe yet Sergio was setting at his table... alone. Here was one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time and no one seemed to know who he was. At one point I was walking by and caught Sergio eyeballing a very attractive woman as she walked by and he glanced up , saw me smiling and he just cracked up.The next year when I saw him again he smiled as I walked up and said "You still have the same face!" I couldn't believe he remembered me from that one brief introduction. Then in 2007 when we (Ironage) had the Chuck Sipes Award Dinner and the Legends/Girls and Boys Town booths at the Arnold Classic I had the chance to spend the entire weekend with the Myth. Down to earth and just fun to be around. His son Sergio Jr., was there also and I had a renewed hope for this generation. I've yet to meet a young man more respectful and well mannered, that doesn't just happen. At one point over the weekend a fan who was handicapped, walking on arm braces, came by to get an autographed picture and Sergio would not take his money. He looked at me when the fan was leaving and whispered "How could I face God if I charged him for a picture?" His compassion was evident. After getting the news Monday night I've been recalling those little exchanges and wrapping them as treasured memories.Surreal at the time and surreal in recollection... after at it was Sergio, The Myth!"

This is a great story about Sergio from Mike Katz:

MIKE KATZ: "THE ULTIMATE FREAK"
I remember one time I was in Arnold's third-floor walkup fiat in Santa Monica and there was this envelope addressed to Arnold. Arnold opens it up and his mouth drops. I never saw Arnold quite as—I don't know what the word would be—motionless. He’s just looking at this picture, and I was like "What are you looking at? Say something!" Well, it was this picture of Oliva, and he looked like he had 35" arms; and it said something like "See you in New York." This was July or August, and the show was in October.

Arnold said, "The -------- must have done something to the photo!" He figured it was some magnification trick. His arms looked three times bigger than his head. (Laughs.) So I said to Arnold, "He's just trying to mess with your mind. Don't worry about it."

If anyone asked me anything about Sergio, I would only have good things to say about him. I feel blessed that I was able to see Sergio when he was at his peak and then to pay tribute to him onstage with his old Chicago friends Bob Gajda and Bill Seno a few years ago. I've been thinking of all the great memories of Sergio all this week. Bodybuilding has really lost one of the best.

The other pics on this thread are incredible !! A coach of mine in High School had Sergio's Most Muscular pic , with the traps up to the ears , in our weight room .. As good as Physiques have gotten there is just a element to the Classic Bodybuilders that make them look so much better to me .
