View Full Version : Is there a reason that the Olympia is only in vegas and doesnt travel as it used to?

Is there any reason why they stopped having the olympia in different locations? Personally I think it allows more people to see the sport by covering different areas. I guess its easier to have it in one location every year so people know where it will be but it gives people a change of pace like the superbowl and may even stimulate the economy a slight bit.

Im no expert, so this is why Im asking. I was looking through old IFBB event history and noticed many more shows like the Grand Prix of Miami and Pennsylvania. I guess many have changed names or have become financial busts

It's all about money. But I have always wished it would move around again. I would go to it, but the location means I would have to pay money not only to see the show, but to travel far as hell to see it. I wonder if there's a way to petition to the IFBB as fans to make something like this happen?

I think they figure they'll get the best turn out in Vegas. I just wish they would bring it back to the Mandalay Bay..

This is pure speculation on my part, but it may be difficult to find a different venue each and every year. Arnold has done well staying put in Columbus based on a promise he made to Lorimer back in the 70's. 2008 was my first Olympia experience, it was also my first time on a plane, both were enjoyable. I say keep it in Vegas. The only thing that disappointed my wife and I was the stage setting and the acoustics. How was Mandalay Bay different?

Why would they travel? I mean, it is easier to let the world go to the show than for the show to go to the world. I would love to see it closer to me but I doubt it will ever change.

I agree, Mandalay was awesome and everything was in one there.

Vegas is the perfect location as there are so many other things to do too. Every year they seem to get better at advertising the show around town too. Last year, everywhere you went seemed to have an Olympia ad or billboard.

Agreed, Mandalay Bay is my fave hotel. They may offer a good discount to host there this year. They have specials on rooms right now for the summer at $65 a night!!!! That is amazing for such a nice hotel. $85 a night for THe Hotel area.

Mandalay is much nicer, and having the expo in the same building was better, even for locals.
That being said, all the Vegas hotels have dropped their prices because of the economy.

Me too, but those days are gone forever unfortunately.
I have spoke to both Paul Graham and Tony Doherty and money is the reason it won't be moving.
It's a real pity because it's no where near as exciting as it used to be.

If you look back in time you will see that many of the great Olympias were held overseas.
Germany, England, Belgium and Australia were all sensational shows.
New York was great too, but the current venue sucks, there is no history or tradition about it.
The European venues are very old and majestic and full of atmosphere, the newer venues are dead.

The Olympia has certainly lost it's sparkle.

Agree with the money. Its a city that is always awake and you figure the flow-through that it gets will bring more people that wouldn't normally go to a show will reconsider just to say they went to one. Kinda looked at like the other Vegas shows, most people think that its something that happens every week or so.
Hell, I'm going this year. I live in Michigan and don't plan on going to the Arnold, and that just a couple hours away....hell, probably never will go to a Ah-nold.

Why is it dumb to have an International event in different countries?
This is what makes a sporting event great, the fact that it is a different country each year.

Look at the World Cup Soccer & the Olympic Games. They get bigger and bigger each time they are held.

The Mr Olympia has been turned into the America's Cup of bodybuilding.
It gets less popular each year because its boring - same venue, same competitors, you might as well call it Mr America because that's all it is, an American bodybuilding show.

If you were to take it on the road again you would start to attract more interest from bodybuilders in other countries and hopefully create a bit more excitement.
It sucks the way it is now.

There are a few locations that would work. I am sure it is much easier logistically to stay in the same City year after year. I would love to see it come back to New York sometime. My wife said she would not mind going with me to Vegas but she doesn't fly and I am not up to driving to Vegas from New York.
To make bodybuilding more interesting as well as the Olympia is to have the athletes compete more than once a year and eliminate the automatic qualification.

Well I guess I just thought bodybuilding was predominantly a US sport, so I thought all the big names would be here. Am I wrong, don't we have most of the big names here? The world cup or olympics come every so often and there are competitors from (you could say) every country, if that would be the case for bodybuilding, then I would definitely support the international settings. It would make it very interesting.

I think all the big name bodybuilders are in America because they need to be.
All the Pro shows are held here and to get anywhere in Pro bodybuilding you need a profile, so it makes sense to move to where the action is.

It never used to be like this though.
The European countries were big in the 70's and 80's but over the last 20yrs the Olympia has become a US show, not an International show.

Without being rude to you Yanks, us Aussies and the rest of the world think that you America's Cup yacht race is a joke.
We had a decent crack at it one year and won it just to piss you guys off, but the reality is no one cares about the America's Cup, it's crap.

The Mr Olympia is heading the same way, just another American comp that the rest of the world is starting to get bored with.

Don't forget, a road trip to different countries each year can be something to really look forward to.
Different cities & cultures, different foods, different gyms.........women....:p

It will never happen now because money will be used as the excuse why it can't be done, but an effort should be made to take the Olympia on the road again and inject some fresh spirit about it because at the moment it's about as fresh as a stale bottle of piss.

So true brother, never thought about it that way, but now that you put it that way it would make sense. And yes, the Olympia is heading in a bad direction, especially in '06 and '07 but mostly in 2007, when Vic should have won.

I'm for making it international once again!!!

Here's my opinion:

The Orleans is a dump with some of Vegas' worst blackjack games and it's off-strip. It's not close to the rest of things to see and do in Vegas. Anyone familiar with Vegas knows that the Orleans is a second-rate hotel. It's almost as dumpy as some of the rough-around-the-edges downtown casinos that have closed.

If it has to be off-Strip, there are far better venues -- the Hard Rock is great, the Rio is fine, and any of the several Station casinos are pretty nice.

It would be a lot better for the Olympia to move back onto the Strip. The Mandalay is a very nice hotel. There are lots of other nice casino/convention hotels on the Strip (except Circus Circus and Excalibur lol). The Mirage, Tropicana or the MGM grand would be great venues, if the Mandalay isn't available.

In this bad economy, can't the organizers of the Olympia negotiate with a better hotel like the Mandalay for a reasonable deal so the competitors and attendees can enjoy a first-rate hotel rather than staying at a second-rate dump? Off-Strip, the Rio and Station casinos have pretty good food, and are reasonably classy places.

With all the work that goes into this, I think the organizers owe the competitors (and the fans) something better than a contest in a dump.

It would be nice to have it in the Caribbean or maybe someplace like the Czech Republic that's kind of central in Europe, but I realize that's more difficult.
