hey all, ive used ice baths for football recovery, and they worked great! i cant attest to the muscle growth though,

is there any knowledge out there about ice baths (cold baths) and muscle growth>?

is it going to harm growth at all or has the inflamation already triggered the necessary response

I wouldn't recommend ice baths after a workout because it'll jack up cortisol levels, lowering the testosterone to cortisol ratio which means less anabolic.

hmm, when your body temp is low its stressed and therefore produces more cortisol???

When Reggie White played in Green Bay he would take an ice bath prior to every home game.

Prior to a workout would in a way "prime" you for a workout because of the stress response to the cold.

so the stress response post workout is catabolic? wat if its just a pool....

I'm sure the increase in cortisol is relative to the temperature of the water. Meaning ice bath would be high release because it's more stressful to the body, while cool water is probably more minimal.

cortisol shmortizol. flailing around with random guessing. Ice Baths work great in terms of inflammation. Think of it as a full body ice pack. If you are feeling beat up; aching knees, elbows, shoulders, back walking like an 80 year old man after your workouts then ice baths are your best friend. They speed recovery from inflammation and get you to your next workout sooner.

When I am getting to the end of a heavy lifting program and doing a lot of PR's ice is a far better solution than NSAIDS.

doing hot/cold therapy is supposed to be great for muscle growth....I think thats the whole idea behind Heat Shock Proteins?

It's not gonna work! Try proper periodization of diet, training and anabolic supplements for added growth. Forget the voodoo bodybuilding. That's my opinion..:)
