There will be a new bad guy to deal with when the Mavericks (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/4546) open their pursuit of re-signing Jason Kidd (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/4104) on Wednesday. The New York Knicks (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/4558) are expected to join the ranks of serious competitors for Kidd's services for two reasons. First, it is widely known that Kidd has an affinity for New York. He still has a home there and enjoys the area. He played for New Jersey for 6 1/2 seasons before being traded to Dallas in 2008. Secondly, the Knicks (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/4558) are going to start stockpiling assets to help lure LeBron James (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/4359) next summer. Having Kidd as their point guard, even at age 37 in 2010, would be a nice selling point. Wednesday is when teams officially can begin talking to free agents, and Kidd is expected to get overtures from several teams: Cleveland, Portland, Boston, New York and perhaps the Lakers (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/4553).

Kidd is a joke and has been a joke for a few years now. ason Kidd still has no J. Can not lead anyone in the playoffs. He is nowhere near the player he used to be and other players play off of him in respect for the name he made for himself when he was younger.

I can see it now Kidd gets a rebound starts to turn around and LeBron is screaming for the ball down the court cause Kidd has lost more then one step

His offense is fine. He has lost a step defensively. Of course who plays defense in the NBA?

Yeah. This generation has no idea what defense is and it doesn't help that the League has gone on and made it much easier for the offense to score by switching up the rules. I guess they think that the more people score the more fans will be willing to shell out money for tix.

I also think they do not know what travelling is. I have seen guys take 4,5 steps.

Jason Kidd plans to meet with Knicks officials Wednesday morning, opening day of the free agent recruiting period. A league source told the Daily News Monday night that Kidd is scheduled to sit down with Knicks president Donnie Walsh and head coach Mike D'Antoni early Wednesday. Kidd said in January that he would strongly consider signing with the Knicks. Kidd, who helped the Nets reach back-to-back NBA Finals before being traded to Dallas two years ago, is giving the Mavericks the first chance to re-sign him. The future Hall of Fame point guard will speak with Dallas officials before he talks to the Knicks. It is believed that Kidd also will talk to the Portland Trail Blazers.

DALLAS (AP) -- Mark Cuban wants to be first in line to talk to Jason Kidd (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/players/2625).

Cuban posted Tuesday on Twitter, "Getting ready to fly up to NYC for Free Agent meeting at 12:01," and that free agent is Kidd, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because NBA rules prevent commenting on such things.

Cuban has made it clear he wants to keep Kidd alongside Dirk Nowitzki (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/players/3252) on the Dallas Mavericks (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/teams/mavericks), but it might not be that easy.
The New York Knicks (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/teams/knicks) are believed to be interested, too. So could LeBron James (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/players/3704)' Cavalio Olympic gold medals, including one with James and Bryant just last year. Other teams also may be calling agent Jeff Schwartz.

ESPN.com first reported that Cuban's New York trip is for Kidd.

Signing Kidd would fit in with the rest of the Knicks moves over the past few years.

Jason Kidd will have to decide whether playing at Madison Square Garden is worth forfeiting $12million. That is approximately the difference in the three-year offers Kidd received from the Knicks and Dallas Mavericks. A person close to the veteran point guard confirmed that the Knicks presented Kidd with a three-year contract worth approximately $18 million Saturday. The Mavs offered Kidd a three-year contract worth between $25million and $30 million. Several league executives are convinced that Kidd is using the Knicks in order to squeeze more money out of Dallas. But a source close to Kidd claims that he is excited by the challenge of helping to turn around the Knicks. Also, Kidd believes that he could help lure LeBron James to New York if James becomes a free agent next summer. At least one of Kidd's former teammates believes the Knicks have a good chance of landing the point guard. Former Net Richard Jefferson said on Dan Patrick's radio show Saturday that Kidd's "gonna be a Knick."

Celtics free agent guard Stephon Marbury said to The Globe early Friday morning that he doesn't expect to be returning to Boston after receiving a disappointing one-year contract paying $1.3 million using the veteran's minimum. Marbury said his representative, National Basketball Players Association deputy counsel Hal Biagas, called to tell him about the Celtics offer on Thursday night. The 32-year-old said three other teams, which he would not disclose, are currently interested.

The Minnesota Timberwolves' top draft pick, Ricky Rubio, 18, will remain in Spain to play for his DKV Joventut basketball team for the remaining two years of his contract rather than try to move to the NBA this season, El Periodico reported today. The Barcelona newspaper also says Rubio, who was paid $97,000 last season, plans to withdraw his contract lawsuit against DKV Joventut.

Jason Kidd has agreed to come back to the Mavericks for a three-year contract worth more than $25 million, owner Mark Cuban said Sunday night. Kidd, 36, whom the Mavericks traded for in February 2008, had been pursued by the New York Knicks, among others, in the free-agent period this summer.
