The Mets (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/53) confirmed yesterday that Carlos Beltran (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/3351) was in Vail, Colo., for a second opinion on his ailing right knee, this one from noted orthopedic surgeon Richard Steadman. The ominous aspect of that for Beltran and the Mets (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/53) is that Steadman is the inventor of microfracture knee surgery, an operation that -- if he opts to have it -- could sideline Beltran for the rest of the season, and potentially jeopardize his career.

Noted orthopedic surgeon Richard Steadman confirmed Mets doctors' diagnosis that Carlos Beltran (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/players/6132) has a very bad bone bruise in his right knee, but surgery will not be needed. Beltran's expected to be able to return in three to four weeks. He's been prescribed rest.
Beltran traveled to Vail, Colo., this week to get the second opinion from Steadman. There was some concern that Beltran's injury could be far more serious, considering Steadman is a well-known micro-fracture surgeon. But he's expected to return after the All-Star break. The star center fielder has been on the disabled list since June 22. He's batting .336 with eight homers, 40 RBIs and 11 steals.
Injuries have taken their toll on the Mets this season. In addition to Beltran, Jose Reyes (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/players/7066), Carlos Delgado, John Maine (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/players/7386), Oliver Perez and J.J. Putz are all currently on the disabled list.
