He could hold his own today.

He won that contest, the 1985 NABBA Mr. Universe.

Belknap was also the 1981 AAU Mr. America and placed 3rd as a Heavyweight at the NPC Nationals the following year, 1982.

Never did much in the IFBB Pro shows, unfortunately.

That was an incredible time! Okay hot shot, what show that year did Dean Tornabene win the light weights, Charles Glass win the middle weight, Tim the light heavy, and Mike Christian the heavies?

I would guess the Nationals as they all went pro (though perhaps not at that meet).

Tim took the Light-Heavyweight class in 1981 at the AAU Mr. America and that was it from what I'm seeing, and Glass took the Middle-Weights in 1983 at both the NPC Nationals (where Christian was 3rd in the Heavies and Tornabene was second in the Lightweights) and the IFBB World Amateur Championships.

(continues to bang head on keyboard)

I gotta go do legs, but...

THIS AIN'T OVER!

He also took the overall at that show. I remember watching that show and watching Tim being interviewed afterwards. He looked great.

Never heard of Tim Belknap till this post. Wow, I have to say I'm impressed! (awesome mid-section and wheels) There's just something about the BBers from that era. Thx for posting/sharing.

You were there or was that broadcast?

I remember the Wide World of Sports would broadcast certain bodybuilding shows, never witnessed an AAU Mr. America contest.

John Romano,

I am really enjoying Big J1's Daily Trivia* because of the added information that the various searches turn up. Who knew that Andrulla Blanchette played chess? I sure didn't.

And while searching for Charles Glass' competitive career, I found this article:

http://www.elitefts.com/documents/breaking_glass.htm

Alwyn Cosgrove apparently got ticked at some comments that were attributed to Glass. Fun stuff. Interesting article.

(dives back into the search)

Tim is diabetic and was the person that opened everyone's eyes to the effects of insulin. That's why he's so thick in the day thickness wasn't the norm.

Didn't go to the show Curt, but it was broadcast on the Wide World of Sports. Funny how certain events stand out in your memory. (Tim must have really made an impression.) I remember they addressed his diabetes during the coverage and interview.

Tornabene was another guy with good wheels. He was pretty strong for a smaller guy, right John?

Killer physique, I like how he was rocking a Charlie Chaplin/Hitler looking mustache in that vid too, bold.

You - or anyone - know where he is, es?

Shawn can be tough to take, but his "Where are they now?" type interviews over there were awesome. I don't know if he's still doing them or not. I'll have to check.

I must have missed that one. But I do remember WWoS covering different shows. Believe Arnold's appearance or reaction to his win at the 1980 Olympia put the kibosh on their coverage of competitive bodybuilding.

Didn't they film that competition but then never aired it? :(

Tim had thickness and graininess well before his time.

I read that his name was pronounced without the "K", as "Bel-nap." Anyone know for sure? His brother Fred also competed for awhile. I couldn't find any pix of him.
