Right now i have a standard weight lifting belt, should i be using something different? If so, can anyone recommend a good belt for deads? I have had previous lower back problems and want to try an avoid going thru that again.

Try and find a store near you and try some on, remember the leather ones take some time and work to get broken in. I bought a really thick one and it took months to get to where i felt comfortable in it.

If you start with a nylon belt with a looped velcro strap you can get going on belts and what you need.

Thanks guys. I just never got comfortable in them. Hard to get my posture right, can't breathe right etc.
I should say though, just the past 2 weeks or so I have been using one from ATP that is laying around the gym on my heavy sets of standing overhead presses and my front squats. I don't get it very tight though, and only when I do heavy triples or heavier. However, I am not doing any standing presses for a bit since I think that is the cause of my knee trouble.
But yeah, not for deads.

Do you guys think me hitting 500 this year is realistic?well you are probably around 420-430 for a single at the moment (if everything went well). So another 70-80lbs in a year is not unheard of. If you make pulling a priority it could be done.

I liked back in the day when I would only work up to 1 all out set of deads and give it everything I had. At that point I did them every week and one week would be a set of 10 (if I got it I added weight for the next time) and the other week would be 5 reps or less. That method got me up to 605... then I screwed around a bit and got that up to 655. Haven't been able to get past that yet.
So 1 week reps, one week heavy.
MOST important go in ready to PULL!!! Rested, fed etc.

Wow that's impressive!!! I did 465 last month tried 470 got it up but didn't lock it out completely. What kind of workout do you think I should do to get my deadlift up to 500 that's my ultimate goal. Thanks by the way I'm 6ft 215 so I guess that's a decent dead? 500 is my goal. Thanks again :)

No prob you deserve it :) Truly impressive feat for sure. Okay I'm 32 training for like 9-10 years. 6ft 215-220 was like 170 when I started. Didn't train my legs seriously the first 2-3 years, started hitting them hard after that. I do deadlifts, squats and bench pretty much every week or at least when my knee or joints don't hurt. I always like to do the squat or deadlift first in my workout when I'm fresh. My max on the squat is 495 think my form was good at least that's what my spotter told me. Done a 405 bench but with the thinner bar, with the thicker bar I've only been able to do like 385. When I deadlift I usually do like 225x10 315x8 365-4-6 415 1-2 then try my max because I really want to make sure I'm warmed up last thing I need to do is blow out my lower back right? Never ever used wrist straps in my life even though I'm sure they have their use. My hands used to be pretty weak but they've gotten stronger from the years of lifting, was thinking about buying those hand grippers to make them stronger. Okay phew!!!! I'm rambling! Lol Never really done like a pure powerlifting workout per se I guess. Want to know anything else? Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!!! :D

We have a kid at our place that is 19 or 20 weighs in the upper 170s and is right around the same. He just 315 for 10 this week... pretty strong squatter for his age and size! What I am finding out is using chains really helps develop acceleration from the floor and also to develop a strong lockout.

You may want to give them a try.
