Yeah it's crazy. You should watch Oly Lifters in the Bulgarian training halls. They will nonchalantly come up and squat 500lbs easily with no gear, nothing and hit it ass to the floor like it's play weight. Than the next person will come and do it and so on and so on. They'll increase it till they hit their one rep max with nothing more than a belt.
