Sometimes when I go really heavy on barbell shrugs I feel better using a mixed grip (one overhand one underhand). My question is will this still give me equal development on each side of my traps over a long period of time? or with the mixed grip create a muscular imbalance on one side or the other? I only use a mixed grip on my last two sets usually, with straps as well. My grip strength isnt why i used the mixed grip, I just feel like I can handle the weight alot better with a mixed grip and get better contractions.

I'm very fearful when i do heavy movements with any underhand grip. too easy to tear a bicep. Personally, I have never done it like that bu, it's the same as doing a mix grip deadlift.

If your going to grip the bar like that then I suggest switching which hand is over and under every set

I used to use a mixed grip on heavy shrugs and deadlifts. I eventually became fearful of injury and now use strictly overhand grip.

No way would I use it on bent over rows. Sometimes I'll do one set of shrugs with the mixed grip with heavy weight and then do the normal grip for the rest of my sets. People say that you can tear your bicep, but I think as long as your form is good and you don't get too overzealous with the weight you should be fine.

double overhand with straps would work well. and try using a cambered bar if you have a problem with having the bar hit your nuts on shrugs. the cambered bar should solve that problem

Why not use straps. If you are trying to get more reps with max weight use straps.

I use the mixed grip when I do barbell shrugs. I have done this for two years now with no problems. I'll sometimes do them behind the back too but with lighter weight and more reps than in front. I don't notice any difference in development or strength side to side when I do dumbell shrugs.

I like 'em. Different angle and all that jazz.

i have always used a mixd grip on shrugs and deadlifts and my left trap was always a little bigger to but now it looks like its starting to even out a little even though im not doing anything different
