I know Sassy will be the pro about this topic.
I have a bunion on my right foot. I've had it for years. The only thing that it's done is as it got bigger it made wearing high heels impossibly painful. For anyone who doesn't know...I guess it's calcium or something but the big joint under my big toe is large and doesn't allow my big toe to bend. That joint is all but fused. So no big deal...I just keep any heels under 3 inches and I'm ok.
Except now. I'm only at 60 minute of cardio at 16 weeks out. My bunion is killing me! Not only does it become painful during exercise (walking mostly) but it hurts and aches even when I'm not walking. It just plain hurts like hell.
I'm guessing surgery will be the only option for a permanent fix. How can I deal with it until I can have surgery? I am not doing it now..this contest has to happen first even if it means painful cardio all done on a bike or elliptical.

Ladies: Remember guys design womans shoes, so they are designed for looks not comfort. Suggestion: wear the sexy shoes for events, etc... Wear the comfortble shoes for work... You will spare your feet, and spend less time with your foot doctor....Bunions suck, as do corns, but they are preventible.... Good Luck, hope your feet mend fast....:)

GM, I have the exact same thing, and on my right foot as well (not only does it ache all day but it's f'ing ugly!). I make it a point NOT to use the treadmill for my cardio when I'm prepping because of this. I stick to the stepmill or the elliptical because they don't seem to put as much pressure on it. And good luck in your prep, by the way!

Thanks, Melissa. Hey, does any kind of pain killer help? Ibuprofen, aspirin, etc? I walk in the mornings for an hour and that's when I have the most pain. It comes and goes through the day but it's worse during my morning walk.

I've never had any success with any kind of pain reliever, but then again, I'd don't really use them much anyway. I have found that certain types of sneakers are more comfortable than others. I usually wear the UnderArmor sneakers because they're wider in the front and don't put pressure on it. I also have a pair of Nike "cardio" sneakers that are also a little wider in the front.

Ahhh...that makes sense! I usually wear Ascis Gels but I do have a pair of Saucony because I was experimenting once before with a show with a larger toebox. I think I'll try those this morning. Ok...it's late....I gotta get this hour of cardio done!

I'll try anything before surgery. I doubt I'll be able to sleep with anything between my toes. I can't even stand socks in bed.

I wonder if a more tame version of that, for example, Nike Air Rifts which are like the Japanese tabi boots might help.
I walk a lot most days, or I am on my feet, I wear my Nike Air Rifts ALL the time and rarely have sore feet.
Plus, they look rather cute with dresses.

I went to my doctor for the same thing. He prescribed me Celebrex for the pain. You might want to get a prescription of this from your doctor and try it.

From the website....
Remember going barefoot as a child? It’s the way you first discovered and conquered your world—without the constraint of shoes. Or the sense of duty you acquired later on.
Now you can experience that same physical and visceral sensation in Vibram FiveFingers—the only footwear to offer the exhilarating joy of going barefoot with the protection and sure-footed grip of a VibramŽ sole.
FiveFingers footwear connects you to the earth and your surroundings in a way that is simply not possible in conventional shoes. It puts you in touch with the earth beneath your feet and liberates you to move in a more natural, healthy way. FiveFingers stimulate the muscles in your feet and lower legs to build strength and improve range of motion. Our customers report an increased sense of balance, greater agility, and visibly improved posture.
Choose from a variety of designs to cover the wide range of activities you would rather do barefoot—everything from fitness training and yoga, to running and trekking, to kayaking and sailing. Discover a level of performance and a connection to your environment that is positively without peer.
The typical human foot is really a miracle of evolution with 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments. Like the rest of the body, to keep our feet healthy, they need to be stimulated and exercised.
Many experts believe the shoes we wear not only cast the foot in a protective form, but also weaken our foot and leg muscles, leaving them underdeveloped and more prone to injury. And while there are many occasions where traditional footwear is essential for protection, safety, and security, it is equally important to stimulate and exercise the foot in a more natural state on a regular basis.
That’s why we recommend wearing FiveFingers for exercise, for play, and for fun. Stimulating muscles in your feet and lower legs will not only make you stronger and healthier, it improves your balance, agility and proprioception.

SHOES! THE RIGHT SHOE! Or go see a foot dr and they might be able to give you a perscription for a pair of shoes. I work for a specialty shoe store and people come in all the time with them. Its very sad how much they hurt!
