Alright people my name is Larry, I'm 21 standing at 5'10.5''. My weight is generally about 168 pounds and I'm sick of having an average skinny physique. I've made up a meal plan and I'll post it up here along with my workouts.

I posted a similar thread over at MD a while ago but I didn't get to train too often because of an ongoing back problem and so rarely updated it.

My back has been feeling stronger and I'm back lifting.

*Going for an appointment in april to see what's wrong with my back in the meantime my lifts will be pretty light but I'll post the details.

I would suggest you put legs on Monday and back on Friday. Those are the two toughest muscle groups and you have them on back to back days. Having two complete days of rest after doing back would allow a great recovery, and give you a real reason to pound your legs into jelly on Monday.

I've been told before that I shouldn't train shoulders or arms for at least 2 days after chest day, I can't go too heavy anyway so I don't feel overly strained with the split. Think I'll stick with this for a few months and then I'll change things up when my back is healed and can go heavier.

Good work, keep it up

Larry C

Damn sorry about that. All the weights I have have are measured in Kilos, I'll put up both weights from next week when I figure out the conversion over the weekend.

I gotta get over there someday to the mother land.

I have the following names in my family tree, but they came over way back in the 1700's, so my Irish blood is pretty diluted now:

Daugherty, Hurley, Ferrell, Quinn, Shaw

Larry C
02-26-2009, 07:44 PM
Do you know which counties you're family would have come from?

gman
02-26-2009, 08:27 PM
not too much info

Shaw was from County Down
Doherty from Donegal

The others don't have info, just says Ireland on my family tree software

Larry C

I've heard those two are nice. I'd like to make it over to the states sometime for a long trip but I've been told I should get a drivers license first so I'll sort that out first. In my opinion there's no point having a car if you live in Dublin because the place is so small and the public transport is decent anyway.

Good work so far training seems to be solid
I would suggest adding a pro source to meal 2 and adding fats to meals lacking.. Some Mac nut\EVOO, almonds or ANPB

Thanks for the input, I was thinking about adding another protein shake to a meal so I might have that with Meal 2. I could add more almonds but I have yet to get some macadamia oil, is it usually just poured over food or mixed in with drinks? I've not tried it yet. It might add some taste to the rice and chicken.

Thanks G. I'm ok with the workouts but I can be inconsistant with the eating because I can be lazy with the cooking, getting tired of cooking and cleaning up so I think i'll do it twice a week and I won't have any excuse not to put on weight and mass.

I'm not sure what evoo is, is it another oil?

I'm glad Kai won. A deserved victory and certainly a gracious winner. MD don't seem to know a good thing when they have them. There seemed to be a sole push being made with Vic and after the troubles Kai has been through and the rumors lately I'm happy for him, that he was able to climb the ladder he set out for himself. Inspiring stuff.

How's the diet going, are you finding it pretty easy to keep up with?

Larry C
03-14-2009, 09:49 AM
I started preparing my meals twice a week and that's made it easier to keep with it, my average weight has gone up about four pounds over the last two weeks so something is definitely working.

keep it at 1-2lbs a week or so, if it starts going up quicker, cut the calories slightly.

Good job!

Good job!

Thanks for the tip man, I'll keep an eye on it. I've definitely been feeling a gain in strength with most exercises. Certain exercises such as squats can be pretty awkward though because I'm training at home with a bench, barbells and dumbbells and I have a problem with my back that flares up. If I keep making improvements I'll be happy.

I'll post up some pics either today or tomorrow when I get a chance.

you are lean, not skinny-fat, so you should be able to add mass just by eating and lifting. You don't have any fat to lose first.

Larry C

I've got a leg curl attachment on my bench I'm just trying to get used to the squats. I might get a frame for squats because the way it is now I have to bend down after each set and carefully rack the bar on the bench. Calves training can be awkward as I'm only working with doing calf raises on stairs with weights in a bag. I might start bringing a dumbbell over to the stairs and do one legged raises. Here's the pics of the current ingredients of my legs workout. The bag is starting to weaken since I put in the extra 10k over last few weeks.

it's funny the plates must be in kg, so when you convert, they come out to funny weight amounts in lbs.

Ours are the opposite: 5, 10, 25, 45. Never understood why they didn't make 50's instead of 45's. It makes absolutely no sense

Yeh my plates are in kilos- 2.5k, 5k and 10k. I buy more as I can lift heavier. When converting to pounds there is usually a decimal amount after the numbers but I won't bother typing them unless they're close to .25, .5 or .75.

That is good. I think it is easy to get caught up with adding more exericses or mixing it up too much, as long as you are continuing to get stronger, I would not change a thing. If progress stalls, then look to mix it up. That is just my opinion. I know many times I have actually stalled my progress simply by mixing it up too much. You are on a good program, the basics are where it is at. Also, on rear delts, I like to just add them in on back day, they are a pulling muscle and you pull on back day so for me it makes sense, however, I say that but sometimes I do them on shoudler day. Just don't forget about them. Frt Press/Arnolds/Uprights are going to hit the Frt and Middle pretty good.

I started getting twinges in my elbows after doing weighted dips and the tricep extensions. In your opinion do you think this could be because I'm new to lifting and my tendons need to get accustomed to the stress or should I change to different exercises in case of injury?

I'm not doing cardio until I get my back checked so I warm up the muscle I'm working on with a light weight. I usually do a couple of rotations at different angles before lifting anything.

I haven't trained back or abs for a couple of weeks now because of pains in my lower back. Got a hospital appointment Monday to see what's wrong. Hopefully I'll be shown how to fix it 'cause I want to start lifting to put some size on my back. Also want to see more definition in the abs, bring out the serratus and intercostals. I can just about see a glimpse of them in the 3rd pic above but I'd like to clearly see those lines running down. => I know I should be on a bulk to put the size on but I suppose I could still train them.

Hmmm. How does that work again?

2.2 kg per pound, right?

So ten pounds = 10 x 2 (20 kg) plus the first number added on (2 kg) = 22 kg?

I've got that backwards, don't I?

Math, I'm telling you, you can just go straight to hell.

Curt James

Great arms and good abs, Larry. You're going to stack up well with added size. People can add size, but they can't change shape as easily. Some argue that you can't change muscle shape at all. Your biceps are peaked and you've got triceps there already. Added weight will only improve an already good appearance.

Bacne. Pain in the neck (okay, back). Do you have a dermatologist in the neighborhood or can you get a note from your family doctor for a consult to one? Don't know how that works in your neck of the woods, but a course of tetracycline might be all you need.

I had cystic acne (bacne on steroids) which required a dose of Accutane. The mother of all acne medicine!

Larry C

I went to my GP and she gave me a prescription for a product called Duac. It seemed to help with the problem on my chest but as you can see my back is still a mess with acne. I might visit her again next week and see if she has another solution.

Yeh It's the other way around, 10 kg is equal to 22 lbs. Get's pretty confusing when the weights go up so I just keep it lbs now.

Larry C

Went to a back specialist in a hospital today. I've been told to give lifting weights and exercise a break for 3 months to let my back heal. They think it's a muscular problem but I'll be getting an X-Ray tomorrow and having another appointment next week to make sure. Apparrently I'll be getting anasthetic injections in my back next month to help it relax and to promote recovery.

Back to being skinny for a while but I guess it'll be worth it in the long run.

Larry C
04-07-2009, 07:30 AM
Got my X-ray today and was given pain killers that work on the nervous system, I think I'll leave these because I don't the pain to be relieved and be drowsy when I'm trying to do stuff for college, I want it to be cured. I'll have another appointment soon to see what the story is now that they have the x-ray.

If I have to give up weights for a while I might still do wrist curls for my forearms so I can still work out a bit.

Cheers man. It hurts to go heavy with basic movements like Squats, deadlifts and benches anyway so hopefully if this is the solution and I return to lifting I'll be able to progress faster and pack on some size.

For now I'll just work the forearms with weights, walk for cardio and eat less.

This has been pissing me off for so long that 3 months off stressful exercise is really just a walk in the park.

In the past few months I've just increased what I eat. Since I'm low on funds and in college it's pretty basic. 3 shakes a day, oatmeal twice a day, rice and chicken twice a day, a dinner and then some eggs before bed. But now that I can't do weights for a while I'll just lower my intake so I don't get fat, I might keep in one or two shakes though.

I've changed to pounds so everyone can understand including me. It was only kilos when I put a 'k' after the weight amount. I go by pounds but my weights are all in kilos.

I have a friend on BodySpace who would list all his Olympic lifts in kilograms but his other movements in pounds.

Really had to pay attention in his journal and, yeah, do a tiny bit of math. :)

For the non-kilo types, it's not that difficult. I weigh just a bit over 80 Kg.

Each kilo is about 2.2 lbs., so I'd take my weight - 80 Kg - multiply by 2 for 160 and then add 16 to the end of that for 176 lbs. converted from Kg to Lbs.

(Actually, 181 lbs. But that math was easier for my unsolicited tutorial. :p)

What's up, Larry?

Curt James
04-11-2009, 12:39 PM
My little arms can't curl 55 kgs :D

55 Kg x 2 is 110 + 11 is 121 lbs.

I could cheat it for enough reps to stretch or even tear an already sore tendon, but I'll leave that weight for the bigger boys. lol

Not much Curt. Took this past week off from training to concentrate on getting work done for school, been pretty drowsy with the painkillers which didn't really help.

Training-wise I think I'll train my forearms with dumbbells and calves with bodyweight twice a week for the next 3 months while I'm recovering. Training all other body parts seems to put a strain on my back.

pains in my lower back. Got a hospital appointment Monday to see what's wrong.

Is that this Monday approaching?

I asked my chiropractor on the last visit about having X-Rays or MRI, whatever they call it, to see what's up with my lower back.

Wishing you a good result, bro.

It was this past Monday. The consultant thinks it could be purely a muscular problem so I'm to stop weight lifting and strenuos exercise for 3 months and I might be getting injections in a month to allow the muscles to relax and heal. It's been hurting me for 6 years now, pain is around the base of the spinal erectors on the right side and can spread across to the left side.

School is most important right now anyway, right?

Check out Steve G's training journal if you haven't already.

He injured his back pretty badly apparently. Might have some tips for you by way of training around your injury.

Might want to stop the painkillers if they're not helping. I remember you saying they only mask the pain anyway.

What did they give you? I have had Darvocet and Vicodin (probably misspelled those names) in the past.

Now, I'm about masking pain. As I recall, I loved them both! lol :)

Not on anything right now, though.

There's another lifter on BodySpace who was in a car wreck. He had a journal called "the pump and puff show" because he was limited to high reps with very light weights - his back was so trashed.

He was dedicated, though, and did make improvements.

Train what you can and pay attention to pain. It's a message, as I'm sure you know.

It's been nagging at me for so long I might just go with the guys advice and not train. 3 months is really a short time if it means I'll be strong and healthy afterwards.

The painkillers are called Lioresal, I'm not taking them anymore because of the tiredness. I think I should have another appointment soon because I got an X-ray the day after the appointment. I'll see what their opinion is then.

That sucks.

There was a relative by marriage who they thought he was having heart attacks - severe chest pains, but it turned out it was muscle spasms.

He was this big guy, a farmer. Never thought that was possible until then.

You don't have anyone else available for an additional consult? I've had some doctors who seemingly didn't know anything. :(

And they're prescribing rest and an eventual injection. I'd want to know the root cause. Of course you do as well.

I've seen quite a few different people about the problem. 3 physiotherapists, 2 chiropractors, a masseuse and a chinese healer. I've tried various other things like swimming and bikram yoga but they only have a short-term effect.

I trained martial arts when I was younger and had aspirations of becoming a stuntman so I was always jumping from heights or practising gymnastics moves, none of these are good for a healthy back.

Curt James
04-11-2009, 01:59 PM
I got an X-ray the day after the appointment. I'll see what their opinion is then.

Naturally, most would want a clear X-ray showing no malfunction but I'd almost want them to see something!

X-ray tech: "Oh! THERE's the problem!"

Right? That way maybe they'd be able to "fix what's broke."

Damn, I'd be frustrated.

There's a book titled "Romo," I believe, about this one Pro NFL'er. He was all about Chinese healers and acupuncture, etc. A lot of it seems really effective.

That "jumping from heights" action sounds like it could easily have pinched a nerve or otherwise injured your spine. :(

There were times when I thought it was completely healed and then it would start up again so I have been pissed about it in the past. I'm just hoping this is the solution.

With the art stuff I've been trying to practise using watercolours. Figure I might do a few ink and paint lanscapes. I've also been working out my last sculpture, it has to be based on a bodypart and made out of cardboard so it won't take too long to finish when I've planned it out.

Was it a clay head that you posted to the art thread? That was fantastic! I've seen some gorgeous watercolors. Not one of my strong points. I love cartooning and drawing with pencil. Did a lot of oil painting and acrylics in college. I earned a BA in art first and then years later went back for my teaching certificate.

Well, I hope the three months off is the solution. You can still do light cardio in the form of walking, right? There's actually a Walk or Walking magazine. lol

I laugh, but it really has some interesting articles.

Ok so I was given the injection for my back pain today, they chose a different one from the one they were describing before. They used a trigger point injection and put into the base of the right erector in my back It's feeling a lot better now. I won't have to go in repeatedly as I would have with the other, just have another consultation on the 20th of July.

The doctor checked the X-ray I got a while back and told me I have an extra joint in my lumbar region that goes out of the illiac crest, only 2% of the population can get it so I'm a fully fledged freak!!!

I didn't pick up if it's a bone or a ligament but he said that since I have this I will always be prone to get pain problems with my back. He told me that if the injection doesn't work properly that the only other option will be be to burn away the nerves surrounding the extra joint.

Until July I'm just allowed to stretch and then I'll see how it is and what he thinks at the next consultation.

Mr X

Mr X
05-26-2009, 11:08 AM
for sure if I were you ide probably see if the injections keep working before you go the surgery route.

Larry C
05-26-2009, 11:11 AM
That was the only injection they'll give me. When I see the doctor in July he'll see how it is and if it starts pissing me off again then it'll be lazering time.

Mr X
05-26-2009, 11:13 AM

Larry C

Larry C
07-20-2009, 05:41 PM
Alright if anyone was keeping track of this log the injections ended up only working for 2 weeks. Saw the doctor again today and I'm booked in for the nerve lazering. He said the surgery should take away the pain and that I'll be able to get back to lifting weights a few days after the procedure. I'll still be prone to injury because of the extra bone but this should improve things.

Just waiting to get the date to go in and have it done...
