So after some prodding from a friend, and Curt and SteveG giving a little encouragement to me on with this, here is my training journal.

So here is the story:

After being overweight for most of my life, 2008 brought about change. I hired Dave P for 16 weeks.

He helped me to go from a pant size of 48 down to a 40. I lost over 12% bodyfat. Sounds good except I was close to 42% fat. That number about blew me away. When I saw that number I went into a panic thinking I was a goner.

After a long battle of getting nowhere, I went to the person I thought knew the most. Dave P. He put me on his diet, had me email pics every week and took no BS. Man, looking at the pics I could not tell the difference, but in person I could. Dave took one look at the pics and knew when I blew the week or even a freaking day. He kept me on track for sure.

So late in 2008 I broke my foot and was down until November. Then the excuses came with holidays. Well, I have gained at least 10 more pounds back from sitting on my ass but I am determined to see my freaking abs for the first time in my adult life.

With dave's diet, my determination, this thread, and the advice of these boards, I will make this happen.

So with that said, here starts yet another training journal.

5'8" 240 with most of the fat in my stomach
41 years old (42 in March)
Definitely an endomorph. I just look at junk food and the fat multiplies.
I am a desk jockey so I do not get much cardio work during the day.

I am definitely not as strong as most of you big dawgs but here is my leg workout today.

Treadmill at 3mph at 3.50 incline for 35 minutes

Weights
All of these are plate loaded, no cables or machines

Leg extension 35x20, 45x20, 70x15 as warmups
Squats 95x15, 135x12, 185x10, 185x7 - Sets 3 and 4 are both 2 reps more than previous workout
Leg curls 35x15, 45x12, 55x10, 55x8
Stiff leg deadlifts 45x15, 95x12, 115x12, 135x10

Like I said, I'm not as strong as most of you but I do what I can do.

Let me know if I missed any needed info.

FOOD:
4 Omega eggs
Natural PB (too full for the shake)
6.10 oz chicken breast w 1/3cup cashews
Natural PB (too full for the shake)
7oz Turkey breast w 1 cup broccoli
25 gram whey protein for dessert

DP is such a cool and knowledgeable guy. Even after my 16 weeks was up the guy was cool enough to tell me I could keep going with him if I wanted to. Well, that was when I broke my foot so I obviously could not keep going. How cool is that? I was taken aback.

Gman, if you are listening to him, you will do awesome.

This is what I am talking about. Everytime I head down the path something happens.

I got nothing done today.

I have been up since 2am with the baby and my wife because they have been sick all day and all night.

so I have no treadmill work and now weight work today. I did ok on the food until I started feeling like I was gonna hurl. Then I grabbed the dairy to calm my stomach.

I'm going to bed irritated that I wasted a day of workouts but glad I was able to take care of half of the family.

I have been existing on crackers and chicken for an upset stomach (whole house is sick), so clearly this is why my energy is up and down.

Worked chest today. Not too bad for me. All the numbers are up. Here it is:

Incline bench press
45x20 (warmup), 115x15, 135x12, 185x10 (up 1 rep), 185x7 (up 1 rep)
Incline dumbbell flyes
10x20 (warmup/Feel), 25x15, 35x12 (up 2 reps), 35x12 (up 2 reps)
Flat bench press
135x10, 155x10, 160x10 (up 5 lbs and 1 rep)
Dumbell flat press
45x10, 50x10, 55x9 Last workout was 2 sets of 45lbs so this is much better

Felt good during the workout considering what I have had to eat the last two days. I am looking forward to no carbs if you can believe that.

I tried a WTF pump before the workout. That stuff tastes like crap and I felt nothing unusual or good about it. Did I mention it tasted like crap?!

Orca

Never tried WTF pump, so I can't say much from experience but, I've never really wanted to try pre workout supps (don't get the science behind them). Hope it was a free sample!

You may not be one of the stronger guys on here but you're stronger than me! Those are good numbers (especially for a sick man!)

Were you just tired by then or is your flat bench just lower than the incline?

gman

First off, best wishes to your family, hope everyone is recovering ok.

Second, way to persevere and get the chest done.

Thanks for the compliment. Some of these guys on here talk about 300 or 400 lb bench...not me!

As far as the flat bench numbers, I have some minor issues with my shoulders so I have found putting flat bench that near last in my routine it does less damage to me. I have totally pre-exhausted the chest at that point so I cannot do that much weight there. At least that is my thinking.

Plus I work out alone so with no spotter I cannot really push totally to my max in case I cannot get the bar up.

Thanks for the encouragement bro. We are all sick as hell. It looks like food poisoning since we ALL have it.

I felt ok until about 2 hours after that chest work and then all hell broke loose.

It will take me a couple days but I will be back. GREAT way to drop 5 or 6 pounds! HA

I worked chest this morning. I am still a bit weak from being dehydrated over the last week but not too shabby considering how I feel. My weights are the same, but my reps came down just a bit.

Incline bench press
45x20 (warmup), 115x15, 135x12, 185x7, 185x5
Incline dumbbell flyes
10x20 (warmup/Feel), 25x15, 35x12, 35x12
Flat bench press
135x10, 155x10, 160x11 (up 1 rep)
Dumbell flat press
45x10, 50x10, too tired.

I could definitely tell I was dehydrated. I wanted to down my cup of coffee and get more. I was hotter than hell but barely sweating.

Anyway, I am sticking to the diet now that I can keep food down and we will see what the week brings.

Peace out brothers

You put bent rows and deads together? I guess if you don't have any pre-existing conditions that's fine, that or I'm being over-cautious! =P

Otherwise, solid workout. Hope you and your family are feeling better!

That is correct, no other back issues so bent rows and deads are usually in the same workout. Not always though.

I did shoulders this morning and will post that workout when I get home.

Shoulders today. I did ok with the diet today (until tonight) but I just have not commited myself for some reason. I need to get my ass in gear with that.

I went to the Doctor for a general check up today and the BOLD has got my blood pressure up for sure. The dr. warned me to get it down before I come back in a month or she will put me on something to bring it down. I of course, could not tell her I was taking something. Everything else was good and checked out normal for me. I will have my blood checked in a month including thyroid and test, free test, and insulin. Usual stuff.

Shoulders

Lateral raise-lifefitness machine
30x10, 30x15, 40x12, 50x10, 70x7 Never used this machine before. It was ok to use

Hammer strength iso-press
50x15, 70x12, 90x12, 110x10 also never used this piece before. I am not sure I like the angle it puts me at. I will try it again though.

Dumbbell press
35x10, 40x8, 40x8 I was getting fried at this point

Upright rows
30x12, 50x10, 60x10, 70x8

Rear shrugs on smith machine
90x12, 90x12, 90x12

Not a bad workout in 45 minutes. Obviously I do not take much in the way of rest breaks. Usually about 30 seconds or so.

I am off tomorrow and go for arms on Sunday after bowling. Sundays are tiring.

Peace

Incline bench press
95x25, 115x15, 135x12, 185x8 (2 more reps than last week), 185x6 (1 more)

Peck deck
40x15, 70x12, 85x12, 100x10

Dumbbell Flat bench
40x10, 45x10, 50x10, 60x9

Iso lateral press
70x12, 90x10, 140x6

Decent chest workout. Reps are going up one or two per week and I am able to add an excercise or a couple more sets per week.

I am feeling strong these days, definitely getting some size on me and it is visible from the comments I am getting.

I sat in a meeting today (I work for an insurance company) and the topic was GH and steroids. Go figure, When the subject began, 8 of the 9 people in the room for some reason looked at me....hmmmmm. What do you suppose that means? LOL

Diet today was ok but not great.

4 omega eggs

nuts
lean steak and broccoli

I missed one meal during the day, I just wasn't hungry.

Omega eggs and sushi? This thread is making me hungry!

I tried eggs with steak yesterday and I now understand why it's a classic! That's good eating. Plus with the right cut of beef and Omega eggs it's not like I'm tempting you to cheat! =P

Pancakes on the other hand aren't even a temptation for me anymore, they give me indigestion -pancakes of all things!

Ok day in the food department but I did not eat enough. I got so busy today that I didn't even get hungry. that is not a good thing.

5 Omega eggs
4 pieces of sushi-with rice
Nuts
2 lean beef patties

I've got my chicken and broccoli ready to go for tomorrow. I am looking forward to feeling better. I already feel better today from low carbs. The only carbs I had was the small bits of rice with the sushi.

no workout today. I bowl every Sunday for 4 hours, and those of you who do not thing bowling is hard work....try doing it for almost 4 hours competatively. It is not as easy as it seems. Although, it isn't that hard. Not like a good leg workout which is tomorrow morning.

Had a good start to chest day but felt a little something on my left shoulder. I worked through it but finally gave in to it at the latter part of the workout. Better to be safe than sorry.

Incline bench
45x25, 115x15, 135x12, 185x10 (up 2 from last week), 185x7 (up 1 from last week)

Peck deck
55x15, 70x12, 100x12 (up from 85 last week), 115x9 (Up from 100 last week)
Oddly enough, i felt the first pain in the lightest set here. I have pretty good form in my opinion, nice and slow and controlled most of the time.

Dumbbell flat bench
40x10, 45x10, 60x7 (up from 50 last week) but this is wheere I gave in to the pain and possible injury. I loaded the plates on the Iso Lateral bench, did one rep and said "no way".

By now the pain is pretty much gone but I can tell there is something lingering there. I will watch it the next couple of days. I don't think it is anything serious.

Post workout shake:1/3 cup oatmeal, 25gr whey, 1 cup skim milk
Nuts
Chicken burrito:chicken, lettuce, tomato, olive, 1tbsp sour cream, 1tbsp guacamole, 1oz chz
Nuts
Turkey burger coming up for dinner shortly

I have not really had a post workout shake lately because I usually just eat my eggs. But I have been tired lately so I thought the oatmeal and sugar in the milk would help. Fell a little better today so I will try it again tomorrow.

I wanted to do bent rows today but that did not work out. Every time I went over to the rack, someone else jumped in there to do something. I won't even give you my opinion on the excercises they were wasting my time with.

Anywho....

Close grip rows
85x15, 130x12 (120 last week), 150x12 (140 last week), 170x10 (160 last week)

Wide grip pulldowns
100x12, 140x12 (120 last week), 160x12 (140 last week), 180x10 (150 last week)

DB Rows
45x10, 50x10, 60x8

Deads
135x12, 185x10, 185x8

I usually do full floor deads but this week decided to give half deads a try. Holy crap that hurt. I think my knee caps came out of my lumbar. I did not care for half deads at all. I know full deads widen the waiste and Lord knows I don't need anymore help with that! But screw halfsies.....

Food was great until dinner time with the guys. On our way to a Bucks game (even though I am a Bulls and Lakers fan) we stopped to pick up a buddy at McD's. I am NOT a fan of that place. I can't stand the chicken, salad, blah blah blah....yep you guessed it....quarter pounder. I should have eaten before I left and just ran out of time. But, it is only one meal, on one day! tomorrow is a new day!

Orca

Curls in the Power rack!? Sacrilege!

I think Side Bends widen the waist, if you do them heavy (like any muscle) I haven't heard of Deadlifts widening the waist, at least not in this context (that context being, why people avoid them).

For Rotators I use an exercise band or tubing, 2 giant sets of the following 10-12 reps each. The goal is to warm it up, get blood flow, increase flexibility/ROM and strength through the range of motion.
Lateral Raise
Front Raise
Bicep Curl
External Rotation (one side at a time)
Bent Over Laterals

If I'm having recurring problems or chronic pain I'd do that up to twice a day every day. Currently I only do it before Chest/Back/Shoulder workouts (all three groups use that joint and none of the other groups do). Hope that helps!

Life fitness seated lateral raise-Not sure I like this machine. Good form but it does not seem to tax my delts as much as free weights
10x20, 25x12, 30x12 (25 last week), 50x12(25 last week), 70x10(ended w/ 4 sets last week

Reverse peck deck-also did not feel this very much-first time using it
25x12, 40x12, 55x12, 70x10

Dumbbell press
45x12, 50x12, 55x12, 60x6 (this is where I felt some discomfort)

Cable behind back lateral raise
10x12, 10x10, 10x10

Shrugs
135x12, 185x12 (135 last week), 205x12 (185 last week) 205x10 (only 3 sets last week.

The good thing is that I only have 40-45 minutes to workout in the morning so I take minimal rest. The bad is this shoulder work, with these machines did not even get my heart rate up. I have neveer used all machines before, and I won't again.

I just wanted to be cautious with the shoulder this week.

As long as your shoulder feels good and you are training all aspects of it, I don't think there is anything to worry about. The discomfort is even okay -as long as it doesn't stick around of course.

Otherwise, nice progress, that's a big jump in weight!/reps etc!

Good session.

I don't like that one, my gym thou has a standing one, if your gym has one, you might give it a go, I always thought it looked like a stupid machine so I never tried, one day a buddy got me to try it, love it now, since you are standing it feels more like you are using DBs but you get the benefit of the safety and smooth range of motion of the machine ... and if you don't have that one, please disregard:D

So far the food is ok but not great. Almost all protein and fat.

2 Omega eggs w 2 pork sausage patties (could have done without that)
Protein shake
2-93% burger patties with buns (my only carbs planned for the day...planned is the key word)
Shredded canned chicken w/ 1 tbsp mayo for a snack later
chicken breast for dinner tonight

Hopefully that will be it for food but that late night snack monster gets to me sometimes on the weekend.

I ended up in the hospital in 03 with a severe kidney infection, and this DR. who was easily obese, not just FAT but OBESE must have talked to my husband out of my ear shot....

she comes in the room and said well with all the supplments your taking and all the weight you've lost its not wonder you have a kidney infection...

Ok I was taking multi vitamin, mass amino's, dessicated liver tabs, protien powder and at that time yohimbe... I had taken a year.. a year to lose 80 pounds thru proper diet and exercise - I was so pissed at both my husband and the dr... her question to me is how much weight do you need to lose, do you realize your taking a supplement that is for MEN....

Ok don't F with a sick redhead running a 104 degree temp, hooked to IV's and being poked for blood every 2 hrs....

I looked at my husband and gave him the eye.... looked at the dr and said who the fuck are you to preach to me about my health when you are clearly what the medical community would consider obese? I have a kidney infection caused by a UTI that I didn't take care of, its that simple, now get the hell out of my room and take YOUR name off my chart and find me a doctor that has some clue how to get me better and out of this hospital....

While he dissagrees with going low carb, he does not dissagree with the premis (spelling?) behind it. Of course, he is fat (not obese) and admits he is fat because he eats too much. At least he admits it.

I agree with you. It is amazing how they are old school USDA food pyramid and it seems like none of them actually study anything new anymore.

Diet was decent today. Food on point. And I can tell because I am hungry right now which is always normal for me while dieting. I get really hungry about 9pm. Either I go to bed or have some egg whites. Tonight I think I will try to skip them and go to bed soon.

Diet going pretty good so far. Been on 3.5 days and struggled a little bit but the scale is moving so I am satisfied with that. As long as it moves, I will keep going. When it stops, I will make the adjustments.

huge bowl of lucky charms for breakfast

Can of ravioli for lunch with 2 slices of white bread on the side to mop up the sauce with.

Fried chicken, fried potatoes and green beans with bacon for supper.

Snacks consisted of twinkies, hohos, fritos, pop tarts, etc
