lactic acid is lactic acid, isn't it?

What they're concerned about it muscle loss as light weight isn't challenging them and telling your body to hold onto muscle.

Bob45

Not what you are looking for. I work on things overhead and my arms burn like hell from lactic acid. Some people can do it all day long like the beautiful girl that cuts my hair. You had good strong workouts. I would keep doing those.

Would like to see proof of the contention that higher reps causes muscle loss. Thought old school guys did that when cutting

Sometimes experience is the toughest teacher. Would hate to see you do that and lose hard fought for and gained muscle mass. John Hansen who was the Natural O advocated refining type moves pre contest to bring out those smaller muscle groups but still practiced a hybrid version of HIT/Volume. He has a damn fine physique.

High reps and circuit training are totally different though. If you want to do 40 rep squats to failure than you sure won't lose muscle. If you are not resting and using light weights to burn yourself out it is different. High reps are brutal if you do them with rest and go all out.

Got it guys! I had it mixed up

joedemarco

I agree. Don't stop lifting heavy and switch to some other form of training such as circuit / high rep. It's OK to once in a while, but stick to training heavy or like you have been.

Heavy training, ie... squats / deads will stimulate your GH and test production.

Agreed! Hard and heavy right to the end! That's how you maintain muscle mass when prepping for a show.

Circuit training doesn't always mean lighter weight/high reps.

gman
01-17-2010, 08:25 PM
i did not imply that in my wanting to do circuit training but everyone took it to mean that.

I do think you would have to go lighter in most cases due to the nature of it

my only complaint on this diet change I just implemented: constipation

I was getting 40-45 g of fiber before

Now I am getting 10 or so...I am taking 5 psyllium husks twice a day and that gives me 4 g. Other than that, hardly any.

I'm pretty sure veges take more calories to digest than you consume. I used to eat a whole head of lettuce when I didn't have many carbs. I'm sure there are a lot better choices but the lettuce went down. Hopefully you will go today. Did you tell the person that gave you the diet?

I walked 2 miles in this morning, and then had a unique db leg day....I did do circuit but I rested between and used normal weight amounts for all exercises.

3 x through:

DB Squats, 100 in each hand: 10
Lateral step ups, 75 lber on thigh on bench: 20 each leg
Stationary db lunges, 55lbs in each hand: 12 each leg
Plie squats holding a 75lber: 15
Bulgarian split squat holding 55 in each hand: 10

I loved it, felt very intense. I rested at least 45 seconds between exercises.

then 30 minutes of cardio

will walk 2.5 miles home after work

Great job Mike!

Heavy Weights + High Intensity + Short Rest Periods = Lactic Acid + Cortisol + Growth Hormone + Testosterone = Anabolic Growth and Fat Burn

You mention 30 minutes cardio -- HIIT? You will be burning fat for the next 72 hours to recover from a workout like this.

Regarding constipation - call me if you want to go over some other options.

The laxative did not work very well, a little but not much...maybe Bob is right, maybe there just isn't much leftover. I am eating very little solid food now.

Anyhow, I did weigh and measure on my official day.

Weight: 190.0 (down 3 lbs from last tuesday! one of my best weeks so far)
Neck: 17
Shoulders: 48 3/4
Chest: 42
Waist: 35 1/2
Hips: 38 1/4
Thigh: 23 1/4
calf flexed: 16 5/8
bicep flexed: 15 7/8
forearm flexed: 13 1/8

many of these are the smallest I have ever been (I have been down to this weight once before, but I look better now than then)

It is a reality check to keep losing size in areas you thought weren't fat, like thighs, calves and biceps

In other words you aren't sure if you are full of shit or not? It is amazing how fat can make you so much bigger in areas you thought didn't look fat. My arms are 18" pumped having a high BF. When you really restrict yourself to make a weight class cut-off, 15 pounds isn't hard. This past September, I was 172 lbs on the Monday morning after my show...18 pounds! It's not always from pigging out...a lot of it has to do with re-hydrating your body, etc.

Start doing HEAVY ab crunches on one side of cable crossovers with a rope. The abs are like any other muscle, they need heavy weight to get thicker.

I see you are already doing them. Do them heavy. It's not genetics. Everyone has abs.

I used to have a six pack, but I drank two of them, leaving me with 4.

Everyone has abs. Try this. Lay down on a decline bench. Now come halfway up and hold that position. Now press your fingers into your stomach. Feel that hard part underneath the goosh? THAT's your abs. Abs are not genetic. The depth of the cuts might be but everyone has abs. You just have to learn the mind muscle connection....and get your bodyfat down low enough to see them.

No way! That's like saying someone doesn't have biceps. Genetically some people have great shaped and aligned abs. Some don't. Some guys have high peeks on their bi's and some don't. They are defintely under there. I don't have great abs. It takes 6% or under for me to see mine. That was only twice in my life for a very short period. I don't even have a picture! There are so many different situations with divorce it is unbelievable. Kids all handle it differently also. I've had so many kids in this house from having four kids and all their friend's coming over. Most parents are split or remarried or just have a significant other person around. Some chose to be with no one. It is sure hard to make all parties happy. I know I went on miserably for years just trying to make everyone else happy. Still married. Who knows what the right thing to do is?

I do have to disagree that it's not genetic because my son has a six pack and is at least 12-14% bf and doesn't exercise a lot lately. I know I have abs under there, but am just disappointed because I always was told "don't worry, when you get to 10%, they will show fine."

Mike - you are right about genetics. Some guys can walk around with 15 to 18% body fat and still show abs. Life isn't fair but what else is new? But I also think you have not been working abs much - like any other muscle group the more they are developed the better they will appear as you lose fat.

All the guys I know who have great looking abs also do a lot of abs work.

High stress and high cortisol levels will cause you to accumulate fat around the midsection -- once its there it will be the last place you lose it.

Your calves are also developed from carrying around 220+ lbs of bodyweight for many years. If you never weighed more than 180 lbs during your adult life then they would be smaller. Then again genetics are a big factor here as well. Remember when Arnold had a hard time developing his calves -- rumor has it that he resorted to shooting steroids into his calves etc.

You don't see your abs from a combo of more fat to lose and not having worked them enough to really make them punch through. Stop whining, keep losing fat, and do the heavy ab work!

Oh, and when you are through leaning out, do NOT go back to your old ways of eating. You will need to learn how to eat so that you can have lunches like your client brought in without guilt, without gaining a bunch of fat, and especially not sending you to strongman territory :)

Meh 6 packs are for pussys. Real men have a Keg.

Have you stood in front of a mirror and done an Abb/thigh pose. When you start loosing that belly the obliques and top couple of abs will start to show. Also I know in my case I can have veins and striations in my quads, shoulders, chest and even glutes to a lesser extent, but no sixpack.

I think heavy ab work is over rated. Who wants to build a big abdominal area.

For some reason I am not hungry so I am just not going to eat lunch. This is indeed a rare occasion!

OMG, that is so wrong. Good thing it's a rare occasion.

Quit obsessing over your abs and the fact your legs are shrinking.

You have great wheels. The size will return along with that shit you're trying to lose.

I think heavy ab work is over rated. Who wants to build a big abdominal area.

I totally disagree on heavy ab work being overrated. No one wants a big stomach, just thicker abs. This is what he needs.

Two years ago I was in the same dilemma. I hired a personal consultant, an IFBB pro and lo and behold, the first thing he told me was to stop the madness of high rep abs and use some f'n weight.

I did and my abs appeared along with deep creases down the middle and my bodyfat didn't change.

What kind of rep range did you end up using?

What kind of rep range did you end up using?

8 - 10 reps with about 180 lbs on the cable crossover. it was heavy enough that it almost would cause me to not be able to stay on the floor.

I agree .. However I am not a fan of using weights for obliques. If the obliques get too big then they make your waist look wide from the front -- not something a bodybuilder wants.

Totally agree on that. Crunching to the front, on my knees does not hit the obs. It's the twisting and turning with heavy weights and powerlifting movements that build the thick waists.

There is different philosophies for sure when it comes to cardio. Long duration, low intensity is one way. I utilize this primarily. Long brisk walking with my heart rate not going over 125-130. However, performing cardio is shorter burst (30 minutes and less) at higher intensity can be effective also. I know some bodybuilders who use that form of cardio and do excellent with it.

Did Dr. S do your Est levels? Getting that under control probably did an equal impact on my strength, muscle mass and fat. So the combo of HRT and Estroidol control got me back in the game equal to 20 years ago levels. Strengh up in some lifts (leg press and all back work), same in others and only down on squats and dead lifts.

In my mind I have wanted to do a mock 'show time' contest diet prep....bring myself to a 2 weeks out condition WITHOUT sacrificing mass ever since the 09 Nationals. Like June 15th but NOW. Also since my best ever showing was done with ZERO cardio that too is emblazened in my brain. So I am now completed with week one of 'show time'. I need to see what the skin looks like here in 5-6 weeks.

Soooo what I am saying is that I will suffer along with all of you in SUPPORT of your efforts. I can't sit idley by with my dick in my left hand and my right on a Fudge Met Rx bar. I post this on your thread because everyone who will be at the Arnold contest comes in here. Now don't be dragging me into this -- I don't want to get my ass kicked!

Mike - I think you misunderstood what I was telling you about cardio. There is a lot of debate on how best to burn fat. Obviously what Rick does works. Ultimately it all comes down to consistency and determination and being able to control what you put in your mouth.

Here is what the research is showing: Regarding cardio the most fat burning results are from HIIT. This is where you create short bursts (ie 1 to 2 mins) of anaerobic metabolism (ie get your heart rate up to >85% max) then allow your heart rate to fall back down to 50% max for 2 to 3 mins then repeat for 30 mins or so. What this does is build up lactic acid, which along with cortisol, testosterone and growth hormone creates a very anabolic and fat burning effect. When they measure adiponectin (a protein hormone that modulates a number of metabolic processes, including glucose regulation and fatty acid catabolism) they find it is elevated for up to 72 hrs after HIIT but not at all after aerobic cardio. So aerobic cardio will burn fat while you are doing it but as soon as you stop your body stops burning fat. With HIIT you will burn a lot of glycogen and build up lactic acid during the exercise but for 72 hrs afterwards you are burning extra fat as your body recovers from the workout. Multiple research studies have been published that confirm these findings.

I am not suggesting that you do 45 min of continuous cardio where your heart rate is elevated 140 to 150 the whole time. Rather continue the lower intensity cardio but also do HIIT where your heart rate is >85% max (for you about 150) for 1 minute then lower the intensity for 2 to 3 mins and allow your heart rate to fall down to 120s or so then repeat.

Low intensity fat burning cardio where your heart rate is in the 120s works best after workouts that are very intense like legs and back. But after workouts that are less intense like arms, delts and pecs I think HIIT will give you better long term fat burning.

Do whatever works for you - I am just giving you one more tool for your tool chest.

Thanks Doc...I was wrong as usual!

Apologies to Rick and to you. I will mix it up I think. I get plenty of slow cardio doing 4 miles a day of walking to and from work.

My abs are not as sore as I thought, although when I laughed this morning my lower abs hurt a little. I think tomorrow will be a different story...I think the ab wheel inflicted some damage that I am not feeling yet!

I can't describe how I got them to show a little, just kind of leaned the hips forward and slouched back a little and scrunched downward.

Having control of your abs and know how to show them off the best is a majority of it. Just like John describes having control of them or feeling them at all times.

Look at that video of Vince Gironda that baldie posted and note his hip position. It just like you describe above.

It took me 2 months of a lot of posing, using the web cam in my Mac and make a video and observe the results.

I think you're doing too much cardio and not eating enough and your body is going into stress mode. I know I would. You have lost a lot of weight and doing great, but I would slow it down a bit. Didn't you lose 2+ lbs a week or so ago?

One or two 20 minute HIIT sessions is good for me. I am starting to prefer the bike over the treadmill for HIIT.

Thanks, Mac for the advice. I could be in stress mode, I lost 3 last week, but am back up 2 this week so far. My waist though is actually a little smaller. I am trying not to obsess about the scale.

I think the cardio is needed for me because I had been fat for so long (35-40 years). Once I get completely lean and stay lean for a while, I don't think I will need to do so much. Right now the fat is hanging on for dear life!

It was kind of cool to figure out how to get my little bit of abs to show. I do think it gets easier the leaner you get to not need to flex them for them to be showing all the time.

I think instead of focusing on those damn abs you should be focusing on how good everything else is coming along. Just look at the arm/shoulder separations you are getting. Look how the traps are more defined on you now. Look how you can see your back from the front! The line and impression showing on your chest. When the rest of those are ripped the abs will be there too. It's all working. I wasn't talking about being strong or weak either. Just the amount you worked up to and the amount you are losing would be the concern. You have a lot of knowledgeable people backing you up in here. You are doing and looking great!

I have found my body responds best to cardio, to lean out and get ripped when I am NOT doing it all the time, year round. Otherwise, your body is already accustomed to it and won't change to fat burning/high metabolism mode.

As the cardio is lessened, the calories have to be adjusted somewhere and the metabolism drops.

But throw in some HIIT and add some extra cardio and bamm, the body responds.

Sounds good. Almost like breaking out of a lifting plateau. Change up things.

I didn't realize you were on TRT. How long have you been on it?

I just noticed I missed this post.

I have been on TRT about 2 years, and had been screwing around on different regimens. Dr Smo has been my doc since October and everything seems to be humming along now. I had to add saw palmetto to block DHT, but the estradiol is at a great level now. I am using cream split into 2 doses a day. Trying to achieve high normal levels.

The best thing about Dr Smo is he is helping me with my health not just my testosterone levels. My dad died at 44 from heart disease and we are concentrating on getting my HDL up, and my C Reactive Protein and Homocysteine levels down. And it is working really well. all have improved tremendously in the past 3-4 months.

HIIT like Dr Smo said, on the easy lifting days. Slow and steady other days.

It's all good. I can't complain, I am looking better and better every day, the best shape I have ever been in and I am 48. I looked 10x worse as a 15 year old, no shit.

Thanks, Bob...looking at the big picture, I have improved so much in just 14 weeks, incredible really.

You also know me, and you know how OCD I can get. It's abs this week! Who knows next weeks obesession! lol

What kind of cream?

Does saw palmetto really work for you? Is there real science behind it Dr. Smo?

Compounded testosterone cream. much easier than androgel which is just a slimy mess. my cream is about the size of a pencil eraser each dose and I just put it on my forearms and rub them together.

The saw palmetto is pretty scientifically proven to improve prostate function, and I have moderate BPH already at only 48. It seems to be working, I am going to the bathroom much easier now. Not sure about it blocking DHT we will see next blood test. My DHT was pretty high, which aggravates the prostate.

OK on the cream, I wasn't sure. Estrogen also aggravates the prostate but yours is doing great.

Is Dr. Smo local to you? My dad needs a good TRT doc. One that will check E levels. His refuses to do it and I know he has issues with it. He uses Androgel and complains about it and will skip a day or two.

Yes it works and there is research showing that it acts as a 5alpha reductase inhibitor which blocks conversion of testosterone to DHT. Finasteride does the same thing but it requires a Rx, is more expensive and it has more side effects. If saw palmetto doesnt do the job then I use 1 mg finasteride 2 to 3 times a week to lower DHT.

I'd be happy to see him but he will need to come down to SC at least once or twice a year for a physical etc. I know some docs prescribe testosterone, growth hormone etc over the internet without ever seeing the patient but that is unethical and a clear violation of state medical board laws and DEA regulations. There is no substitute for meeting a patient in person and doing a thorough history and physical.

Thanks for your confidence Mike! To be honest I have learned a lot from you as we go back and forth with these discussions - you are always asking tough but good questions and you understand the science behind what we are doing. I think the most important quality a Dr can have is to listen to his patients and not blow off the small details -- the small details are where we find the answers!

I have to put in a plug for you Doc...you take the time to really understand what my problems are, no cookie cutter approach like so many doctors use for HRT. Thing such as taking into account a family history of heart disease for example when setting up a program. Not only did you and I determine the correct medicines, but also supplements I needed for other health issues.

So today, I did my record for cardio, not for intensity, but for time.

35 minutes to the Y.

1 hour at the Y

5 minutes from Y to office

45 minutes from office to home a different route.

2:25 total.

I had so much caffeine today and still am about to die and it's not even 10 pm yet.

It must be because it's so dead on here tonight, plus I have to get up and head to the office in the morning. Gotta go to bed and rest up.
