Today I walked 2 miles to the Y and did shoulders and abs:

Circuit of:

Reverse flys
DB upright rows
Arnold press
Laterals
Front raises

4x through with 1 minute rest between circuits, no rest between exercises.

Then abs:

Cable crunches: 4 sets of 20 with 150lb on stack
Super crunches (start with feet flat and arms stretched out over head, pull knees up and reach arms towards feet at same time)...these kill: 16 14 15 16
Ab roller: 3 sets of 10

30 minutes of easy cardio

2.5 mile walk home tonight.

Baldie

I am going to buy a big steak at Ruth's Chris after the show with the money I save

Doing my part to save the forests, aren't I?

You are absolutely correct, those 2.4 lbs I lost the first day are from having no food in my intestines, that's for sure!

Same here. But they've said that a few other times since the HUUUUGGGEEEE snow we got, that's still hanging around in big chunks. Won't believe it until it happens either!

According to my son, Russell, after that 21" dump, there was a pile of snow next to Boston Market that was bigger than Boston Market.

Yeah, it's got to be water. What's strange is how I am shedding all this water when I was on keto, and should have already been low on holding water!

All I can think of is sodium was high before this.

It's impossible to lose weight this fast and have it be actual fat burning off.

You'd be surprised how much of what you think is fat is water. Even on keto- you get an initial dump of water first week or so when you cut carbs that low. But, the body starts making its own glycogen from protein. You're almost there! Now kick it!

oh I am not quite that low. 1000-1100 depending on the choices I make from the menu. Still hard though. 80 of those cals are from fish oil! It will be worth it to get the fat off once and for all. It's worth 2-3 lbs of muscle to lose 12 of fat. I am taking 10 EAA tabs a day which have very little calories but supposedly provide the equivalent of 40g of protein.

Wow, that long to reset? I was hoping sooner, but I will just try to stay lean for a long time. I do have the show in August to keep me from straying too much.

As long as the waist size stays the same, I will try not to worry about the scale.

It is good to do all the poses. You get that mind muscle connection. Then when you lift you get it a lot easier. I see the lats on the front double bi so they are there. Look at some pics and do it. You should be able to control every muscle just sitting down at the computer.

Trying to figure out why cutting calories causes someone to lose water.

I won't argue that it's physcially impossible to lose fat this fast! Theoretically my bf% is probably going up right now because I have less water and the same fat as before.

It will slow down today and tomorrow for no other reason than I am not exercising at all. Y is closed and I have no boots to walk in. I drove to work and it was fine. The snow is powdery, not the usually icy crud we get around here...didn't even have to use a scraper for the windows, just swiped the snow off!

So, it's not snow ball making kind of snow?

Look at the foods you've cut out/back on. Something in there was causing water retention.

Hopefully he won't be just losing water on his deficit. We are talking short term. I thought it was 21 days. How many times has he tried to lose and everyone on the other site said eat more? He never said he was doing it permanently.

Cut back on nuts and peanut butter, both of which had salt (I can't handle raw nuts).

Basically I am eating 1 cup of oatmeal, 1 cup of cottage cheese or plain yogurt, and 8 oz of chicken. Everything else is pretty much water. (vitamin water, apple, fish oil, cucumber, blueberries, lettuce ,etc). In fact I am stunned it even adds up to 1100 calories because it sure isn't much food.

It is just 21 days, Bob. I think it's going to be 5-6 lbs of actual fat, maybe 8 lbs of water.

Funny though, on Tuesday I was 194.4, today 186.2, so already dropped 8.2 lbs, but Tuesday was not the day I started the diet, so I did not use that as my start weight.

Over time he should lose fat as well.

In the past when he was eating 1800 cals a day (or less) for a longer term diet. That was too little. He's eaten more this go around and lost fat quite nicely. Yes, the very low cal diet he is doing now is very short term.

What was long term? After a month or two he stopped. Then gained all the fat back. Don't get me wrong. I totally agree long term low calorie will just eat your muscle away. Nothing was ever long term. It was way up or way down. Are we having fun yet Pam?

90mg per 2 tbsp. Salted nuts probably were a big culprit.

In my opinion the biggest difference this go around was eliminating cheats. One thing you should glean from this is how much and easily we can gain/retain water. Which messes with the mind when we weigh, measure, and look in the mirror.

The reason I lost this time is I didn't quit, this is the longest I have stuck with it and it worked. I just need this final push to get to my final goal...if not for this contest I would never do this low cal

Seriously I wonder if the T4/T3 I am taking is helping my metabolism to rev any faster. I am thinking it is overrated in that regard unless you don't need to take it and are just using it to cut.

I just remembered another big culprit...Franks Red Hot Sauce...like salt in a bottle. I used it on everything

I think lower calories is going to work out great for you Mike. I can already see better definition and I dont think it is just your posing. People need to understand that as they lose weight they are going to lose lean mass even under the best of circumstances. Samir Bannout, Mr Olympia 1985, said that he would routinely cut his calories down to 1200 a day to get ready for a show. You are doing what you need to do for your individual metabolism and genetics and I think your results will speak for themselves. Keep up the hard work!

Exactly! My metabolism is the same. I need low calorie to lose also.

For my first show I used the same conditioning coach that Mike was using. He basically gave us the same diet and routine. We both lost weight at first but then we reached a plateau. Mike eventually gave up. After several months of losing maybe a pound every 3 weeks or so my coach said to do more cardio etc. At one point I was doing 1 hour cardio twice a day and the weight loss still wasn't improving. The coach refused to lower my calories - I guess he must have thought I was cheating or something. Finally without telling him I cut back my caloires to about 1500 a day and I was finally able to lose about 2 pounds a week.

I have heard the same story from many other bodybuilders especially the natural ones who are not using clen, growth hormone, anabolics etc. The bottom line is that you have to do what works for you. Many well intentioned people will tell you not to lower calories and to do huge amounts of cardio etc but in the end you will know what you need to do.

Thanks Allen, sometimes you have to do some low cal dieting. I cannot say it's enjoyable at all. But I did just go try on a pair of my older son's 32 jeans that he left here, and they fit pretty well. It's all worth it! I never thought I would be only 10lbs heavier than he is. Soon I will be 5 lbs heavier.

Hey Mike, just checking in. Great pic updates. By the way, don't worry about flexing the abs on the front double bi. It's not a pose to show off the abs. In fact, trying to squeeze the abs will make you look thinner. Instead of flexing the abs, you want the chest up and out.

It does look much better doesn't it? For the most muscular try crossing your forearms and bring out the chest striations. For the abs put your hands behind your head and crunch them. The poses are fun when there is stuff there aren't they? I don't even bother the way I look at this point.

Thanks for the tips Joe. I am going to really study the poses from here on out. Still not sure what we have to do for Dave at this contest. But I need to know how to pose for my real show in August!

I can only flex them by scrunching down and then I slouch every where else! Show me befoe the contest and I will buy you a scotch

If I werent 15% bf , I wouldn't need to flex them so much!

You don't need to scrunch down. You just need to 'flex' them by contracting them independently from other muscle. You should be able to do that with every muscle. You can practice anywhere, anytime, sitting or standing.

Imagine someone is about to hit you in the stomach. What is your first reaction? That's right! You tighten up your abs. Now you can do that while not only standing erect (no scrunching) but you should be able to do it with shoulders back and chest out.

Once you learn individual muscle control. you'll be able to do any pose and flex whatever muscles are necessary to show that pose off.

when i tighten them they don't show. that's why I scrunched them, it was the only way I can get them to show!

I am horrible at the muscle contracting. Like I said somewhere else on here, I can't even flex one pec without flexing the other. It doesn't come naturally to me that's for sure!
