Mike, you may have seen this over on that other site. It's what I was pointing out in regard to cortisol and stress from low carbs.

(European Journal Applied Physiology, in press; published online December 20, 2009)

Anthony Hackney and colleagues from the University of North Carolina found that a lower-carbohydrate (30 percent) diet, compared to a higher-carb (60 percent) diet, reduced the testosterone-to-cortisol ratio. In the lower-carb diet, the free testosterone dropped 36.1 percent and the cortisol increased by 14.8 percent!

Studies have shown that low-carb and ketogenic diets increase the stress hormone, cortisol. Intense exercise is a form of stress and in a glycogen-depleted state, will further exacerbate cortisol levels and enhance the suppression of testosterone.

Athletes should make sure they eat adequate amounts of carbohydrates on a daily basis, especially post-exercise, to enhance recovery from high-intensity training and to maintain optimum testosterone levels.

At 60% your carbs and fats will really suffer. Were the subjects on a low protein diet?

Interesting...I don't think it's universal though...my body has fairly low sex hormone binding globulin, so my free testosterone is always above normal on TRT...even when my pre-TRT testosterone was only 280, my free T was mid range normal.

all this on fairly low carb diet.

my 24 hour saliva test for cortisol was all in normal range as well.

This is from MD, whose owner has a hard-on for Dave and has done everything he can to discredit Dave's approach to dieting.

Something else, the keto diet is most effective while the dieter is on HRT or AAS which mitigates any low test issues.

Mike, here's my 2 cents (whether you want it or not...lol). Next time you prep for a contest, hire one coach and just follow everything they tell you. Don't question it, don't ask others for advice, etc. You can drive yourself crazy getting advice from 20 different people.

Just follow the plan from your trainer. If the contest prep is a success great. You use that person again. If the contest prep is a bomb, then you switch trainers for your next show.

The constant changing of your diet plan, and listening to all these people, is not a path for success.

There, told you I was going to give you my 2 cents whether you wanted it or not. By the way, Best of Luck! No one wants to see you hit your goals more then me!

Mike, what you have accomplished is laudable. We all seek validation...perhaps the BB.com transformation thing you earned is just that. It came early, weeks prior to reaching the finish line. Good thing/not such a good thing. Time will tell. I know when I am finished with a show and the lights go down its like an amazing pressure being lifted from me. At times I have chocked back tears. What you have been going thru placed you in an elite group. Competetive Bodybuilders. Remember you are never more than one meal away from recommitment and membership in Good Standing.

Thanks everyone, I really have not given up, honestly!

I have learned Joe's lesson. To just get one person to help and do whatever they say. I am really considering not even doing a journal after Columbus. i have a tendency to agree with everyone and it drives me crazy!

To repeat, I have not given up. I am lifting hard and doing my cardio.

I will list what I had yesterday so you guys can know I did not "cheat" in the classic sense:

1 cup oatmeal with 1/2 tbsp of butter and splenda
during the day I had 2 cups of cottage cheese and 2 cups of plain yogurt, along with 1/4 cup of almonds.
at home last night I had 2 oz of chicken breast, 2 eggs and 1 cup of egg whites, and 2 scoops of whey, 1 tbsp of pb and 2tbsp of sugar free chocolate syrup, and 1/4 cup of almonds

Not low enough cals, but I did not go to Burger King and get two double whoppers at least!

I have done much better today. More protein and less carbs the rest of the way to Columbus. Lower the fat down pretty good, like Rick suggested.

Don't give up on me yet!

For my first show in August I want to be 180-185 when I start show prep...will only need to lose 10-15 lbs the whole time instead of 45 like I had to this time

I gained 15 pounds in the first 3 weeks. Then another 15 pounds in the 2-3 weeks after that. That's how keto is. Once you go off, you gain. Period. You're gonna gain at least 10 pounds before Columbus if you insist on adding the carbs back in.

So is this it? Are you happy with where you are? Or are you gonna fight til the end? If you're gonna fight then get back on that keto wagon. And watch that rebound when Columbus is over.

gman
02-05-2010, 05:53 AM
OK, Erin...not the end. I came this far, and I will keep fighting. That was my last carb! I can't say adding the carbs has done anything for me mentally or physically...I certainly do not feel stronger in the gym or anything like that.

I won't be happy until my waist measures 32 at the navel...that's 20 lbs at least. So I better get going

Good. No more carbs. Stick to the plan. Back to ketosis. It's only 4 more weeks.

Don't focus on a number at this point. Just do all you can do and get as close to that goal as you can.

Little secret...about 6 weeks out I gave up....mentally. Looking back, I can see that now and I wish to god I hadn't. Don't do that to yourself, Mike. Go all the way and do all you can. No regrets!

Arm day. No cardio this morning, will go this evening and do it

Incline bench tricep extensions with a db in each hand: 10/45 13/40 12/45 10/45
Cybex tri extension machine: 8/110 7/110 9/105 8/105
Single db standing tricep extensions: 6/80 8/75 7/75 5/75
Preacher curl 21's with EZ Bar: 65lbs total weght. 2 sets all the way through, set 3 died after rep 4 of final 7; set 4 died after rep 5 of final 7
BB curls, held hands closer together, so had to lighten weight, still had to cheat a little:
4/115 6/115 4/115 6/115
1 hand cable curls: 7/60 9/60 7/60 9/50

the guy who writes my workouts was pissed when I told him my abs have not yet been sore from doing ab work, which is true, very little soreness whatosever even though I had never done much abs and started 2 weeks ago doing them once a week.

Decline crunches holding medicine ball, start with arms extended overhead and reach the ball to feet as you crunch up: 16 12 11

Ab roller: 16 13 15

Cable crunch: 25/130 20/150 17/170

Mac

Hang a weight off the pin. A couple tens or 25 should be no problem from the bottom of the rack.

The one in the gym I train at now stops at 150. WTF. So I routinely use the above technique. Much more than 175 and I start going upwards vs. crunching the weight down.

Mac
02-05-2010, 10:30 AM
Another good exercise is wood chops. Don't know if that's the right name, but it works for me.

Take a rope from the top of the cable, stand at 90 degrees, pull with one had to start the movement, then push with the other as you bring the cable across the front of your body.

The rope twists as you transfer from pulling and then pushing using the intercostals.

Repeat from the other side.

This really helped bring out that deep grove in the center of my abs.

gman

I'm getting a mixed message from these two quotes. Are you saying there will be no Challenge, but you are just going to strip down and pose in front of the Species booth? Are you going to get spray-tanned?

no one knows anything about the challenge other than Dave told me about 3-4 weeks ago that it would be held.

I told him only 5-6 people at that time, but that those who were still in it were pretty serious, and he said we would do it.

I have no idea if he finds out there are only 2-4 people what he would do. No one knows what we have to do at the contest: mandatories, just standing there and looking pretty or who knows what!

My meals are good today.

4 eggs and a low carb tortilla
1.5 cups of cottage cheese, 2 tbs of pb

It is pretty low carb and is slow digesting type protein, but seems to be out of favor for cutting.

Dale, my son who is home for a while from college due to some depression issues, just wrote his latest poem...he had been playing World of Warcraft pretty much all the time, so I am glad he did this. It popped up on my Facebook since I am friends with him on there:

It is just entitled "Sonata"

Que ressent chaque jour un trouvère actuel;
Chanterais des obstacles que nul peut surmonter,
Mais, que, jour après jour ce même idiot
Ne cessera jamais d'affronter.

his translation was in another posting:

If I had but a mouth to speak good words -
A silver tongue whose voice could sing
Of tears and smiles, of winter and summer-
I would not sing of them; I would sing only of fools
And foolishness, and idiocy all done for Love -
Be it real, or perceived.
I would sing of the idiot seeking the Ideal
And of his goal that constantly evades him.
But I would also sing of an undying hope
That that fool feels in chasing his idea -
That a modern troubadour feels each day.
I would sing of obstacles that none can overcome,
But that each day that same fool
Never ceases (nor will cease) to confront.

He amazes me sometimes, he really does. I wonder which he did first? The French one, then translated to English. Or vice versa?

I am staying home form work today and going to try to sleep a lot and see if it helps.

It's not like stomach flu where you spend 24/7 on the toilet. But I am definitely infected with something. Wiped out, headache, stomach cramps, etc.

Well I slept or dozed most of the day under a flannel sheet, wool blanket, comforter, and cotton blanket and still couldn't get warm.

I didn't drink much, 2 diet sierra mists and a glass of water.

My meals were strange, the keto stuff was not appetizing at all during the day. I had 1 1/2 c of plain yogurt for 2 meals, then a coffee mug of cereal for another meal. In the past hour and a half my apetite has really come back. I had 5 scrambled eggs with parmesan at 6, and am eating a protein shake with peanut butter right now.

I always say if you feel like eating you must be getting better.

Your health comes first Mike. Eat what you can no matter what it is. It surely won't be much until your system recovers. The last thing it wants is hard to digest food which is why the BRAT diet is suggested (bananas, rice, applesauce, and tea).

I've had that version many times. The bugger is when you feel hungry, eat, and rebound. I'd only worry about keeping your electrolytes in balance. Gatorade G2 - low cal only has 5g carbs. Throw in some BCAAs.

It's so funny, Pam...I am really hungry now. That's why I thought I must be getting better. The eggs were so good tasting. I ate some again today for breakfast.

I will take it easy on the food though to make sure I can deal with it.

A ring of thieves has been operating in the area, and broke in our house and stole the fridge and stove, and busted out a window. None of this is covered by our insurance, and this is the time of year we have no cash coming in.

That sucks about the rental place. A party sounds great. Has to be women too. The problem is with me is something always gets in the way and can never make it. I've wanted to go to The Arnold for several years and haven't made it yet for one reason or another.

It's tax season, so every day is a great day!!!!:p

Pam, I felt 110% yesterday afternoon, like I had never been sick...weird.

Same here. I suddenly was better. Here I thought it was the shots if Jagermeister I had with my Captain and Cokes.

At PF the numbers on the machines all seemed different. The high numbers always seem to make you feel better. We always say the numbers don't matter.

It is so weird how stomach flu works like that...you suddenly are better. It doesn't linger like a cold

these precor machines are the opposite, they are much heavier than they say.

I had trouble last night doing 120 on the incline bench machine

I never get sore from doing my arms and I work them the hardest of any body part.

But they got sore from 2+ hours of shoveling f'n snow.

Yeah, it's funny how stuff like that happens.

I am perplexed I guess because I just started working them, they should be killing me just from the newness of it.

so I can go to pittsburgh to see baldie, I am looking at other shows. this is the middleweight 2nd place finisher in the Maryland NPC show in rockville. I think I can easily take this youngun. the show is 8/21 this year. I am tempted. I did not put the first place guys pic up, he was dominating. I did not see a Masters division other than one listed "State Masters". I am not from Maryland so not sure if I could enter

Also there is a show in Charleston SC that day too and I am seeing if Dr Smo wants to do it with me.

don't even have to travel...2 more shows in Norfolk to choose from...one in May and one in August! Both NPC.

Advice needed from Baldie/Joe/Rick. do I do May show or August show?
