186.4 :D

So is this going to be your new every day weight Mike? You're going to look like this pretty much from now on (outside of contest prep)? Can you handle it? :D

It's getting close now!

this is the weight barrier I seem to have struck: 186 or so! If I can just break under it for a few days, it might take hold

I would like to be about 180 for walking around weight. I still have some pretty big love handles around my lower back.

that would theoretically be 9% bf.

Not sure if I can handle it, I have become vain and self confident, not used to that. ;)

Seated front shoulder press at max rack, a type of smith machine, no bar weight: 9/70 10/70 8/70 10/70

Mike my bet is that at least 50% of the 'love handles' on the lower back is water. Like I showed you...you CAN dry out some before the unveiling Fri night. I'm doing it now for my Saturday pics. My typical day fluid is 3-4 cups coffee, one liter green tea during training, 4 one liter water bottles, water in my 3-4 whey drinks, one large diet Rockstar, and 2-3 caffeine free diet Cokes. Yesterday 1/2 cup coffee, 1/2 liter green tea, one whey drink with half the water, 1 1/2 one liter waters. THATS ALL. Today the same...Friday even less and for Saturday pics sip water and drink one Espresso. I went from peeing every 5 seconds down to maybe 3 times. By Saturday it will be one drop if I am lucky. Thirsty you ask...:hypno:

Are you saying I should go buy a speedo?

It will be so nice to go to the beach this year and show off!

That's not a very reliable test, sorry. Typical signs of cortisol, belly fat while being lean in other areas.

IF it looks like a duck, quacks like one, sure as shit I bet it's a duck.

Mike, we bodybuilders tend to look and expect things to be beyond normal.

The NORMAL person carries their fair amount of belly fat too. Just sayin

I think part of it is the bodybuilder mentality...I am really not fat. Just fat for competing! 12-13% bf at the age of 48 puts me in the top 7% of men my age.

Seriously though, is my fat "belly fat" or is it "back bacon"? lol

You're far from fat.

You need to watch your stress levels as wise ol' Baldie pointed out. Cortisol levels vary considerably and depending on the time of day, that test is just an indicator. You want to keep them low in the mornings when they peak. Prolonged stress can cause prolonged levels of normal levels of cortisol.

My posing lesson was pretty grueling last night.

Here are the two phrases I hear over and over: "Chest up!" "Butt out!"

Anyway I did pretty well. Practiced/walked through and had my poses adjusted and tweaked for a little while, then he said, "let me show you how a typical show goes." I walked out, stood on the spot, and then he started calling poses! Damn it was fast! I missed one completely, he called the next one out. Afterwards he did say I actually did pretty well for someone just starting.

Both Marvin and Heidi said I had hardened some since last week, especially my legs and abs. I told Marvin I had only lost a pound and he said who cares, you look better! I asked him how I could have ripped legs and a flabby middle and he said just how it works in some guys. He joked that my legs are already at 8%.

A lady who is also doing her first show came early for her posing session right after mine, and she had also seen me two weeks ago at my assessment session...she told me she was amazed how much better I looked in just two weeks.

told Marvin I had done no cardio and had lost weight, he said you don't need much cardio , especially with the posing practice each night.

Almost...I could have done better, but am happy as hell at being where I am!

I will only need to lose 15-18 lbs supposedly when I get back, and will have 12 weeks to do it for my first show on May 29!

That will be much easier than you think. Can't wait to see pics from this weekend. Wish I was going.

It is kind of cool in a way that there are only 2 of us! We both made the final posedown!

I will take the grand prize with my shredded quads and genetically gifted calves which haven't done a calf raise in almost 2 years now!

Chest day, a pump type workout:

Decline pushups using bb smith rack on low setting: 35 30 30 27
Flat pushups: 26 29 31 26
Incline pushups, feet on bench, hands on floor: 27 24 21 25
Incline db flys: 10/40 8/40 8/40 9/40
DB pullovers: 10/85 8/85

10 minutes going through mandatories, sweating like a pig afterwards.

Going to start doing my posing practice after I lift to replace my cardio and to make sure I do the practice each day...this time of year I get home pretty late and it's easy to miss practicing

In a contest prep article I found the following

Typically it's suggested you take in around ten liters of water daily and cut this down to a couple of liters the day before and possibly even cutting water out around 10-12 hours before the show. It's debatable whether totally cutting your water out is necessary.

Wow ... I thought I drank enough water, but I think it is rare that I drink as much as 10 liters!

:spit:

I do think that the relative amount you ingest the day before and on the day of the show matters. So, if you were used to drinking 10 liters, and went down to only 2, your body would dry you out pretty fast, since it's used to processing 10.

Bro-Science, I know, but it makes sense to me!

You are cutting water way down, but not out completely. I won't know the answer til the time comes! I do trust the guy though, and I am going to do exactly what he says. Hell I am down 4 lbs in 5 days since starting his diet and cutting out cardio. and my posing is improving daily thanks to him.

Mike IMO the second shot is a true MM. The first one is a combination abd shot/MM shot.

Why don't you just stand slightly more erect when doing the MM shot? That way you don't crunch over the abs and have that flapping over affect.

Mac
03-03-2010, 09:55 AM
Crab shot.

Bring your arms in closer to obscure your abdomen and close the gap in between your lats and arms. You're leaning too far forward, this will help with the lose lower ab skin.

Bring your legs closer together and eliminate the raised toe on your right leg.

Step forward with your best leg.

Need to show more chest but light isn't hitting it right because of leaning forward.

the more I look at the two, the more I tend to agree.

My friend Eric liked the crab better because he said regular folks think this is what the most muscular pose is, and the other one will throw them off.

regular folks are deciding the winner, not judges. I still like the first one better though.

thanks, guys. That's the very first time I tried the crab way.

the first one is the one my coach has me doing right now at posing practice. He said he might change it as I get leaner, but feels like it is the best for being judged by judges at this point. I am only thinking the crab one since real judges aren't involved.

Mike are you sure about that? I never competed, but in all my years of seeing pics of MM shots and videos of the pro's when the judges call for a MM shot I have never ever seen anyone do it the way your first pic is. I never competed, but in all my years of seeing pics of MM shots and videos of the pro's when the judges call for a MM shot I have never ever seen anyone do it the way your first pic is. From what I seen, all MM shots are the way your second shot is with some slight variations but never with one arm.

Ask Baldie he has been in the game a hell of a lot longer than us, maybe he can help shed some light here.

if you look at Joe Demarco's profile pic, that is another way to do mm. Palms together in front, hands pointing down.

The judges almost always say "do your FAVORITE most muscular pose." at least in NPC show.

Mac
03-03-2010, 10:09 AM
He told me most muscular is anything you want it to be, there is no such thing as a standard most muscular pose!

Do both.

Start with the first version. Don't hold the pose too long.

Morph the pose into the second most muscular and really hit it hard and hold.

Most Muscular
There are more variations to this pose than worth mentioning. Here are a few...
Crab
Hands on Hip
Hands behind back
1 hand on hip 1 hand in front
Basically what you are doing during this pose is trying to give yourself a headache. Your are squeezing every single muscle in your body all at once (including your traps which usually does it for me).

I have seen this one arm most muscular shot before. Not often though. I am thinking of the Britain champ Flex Lewis that does it but also incorporates the crab too.

My wife is pissed off that she's been cooking special meals for me for 20 weeks, only to have this judged by the audience! She is correct that I wouldn't have entered the Challenge if I'd known that from the start.

As far as I know, I don't have anyone coming to cheer for me ...

Mac

The crab pose is flattening your lats and not giving you width. You need to start the pose with flaring your lats, then bring the pose into the shoulder, traps, chest and arms.

Or bring your arms in together more and use your hands to cover geezer stuff. I suffer the same issues.

problem is I have no lats to flare, seriously! That's my biggest weakness is lack of width.

edit: Marvin said my lats will get "bigger" as I lean out in the midsection, but he also said I need to really work on getting them wider by doing lots and lots of rows!

I will definitely be practicing the crab pose, like I said that was the very first time I have ever done it!

Mac

I am going to talk to coach when I get back about how to widen and thicken my back, maybe start two times a week back training or something.

Ask BodyHard too. He has the best width I have seen.

Heavy Dumbbell Rows - 8-10 reps, really stretch and contract at top.

Wide Grip Lat pulldowns. Both heavy and high reps. You have both fast and slow twitch muscle fibers in your lats. Need to train both appropriately.

Bam, healthy Bodybuilding and competition is a gift to your family. As Bill Pearl said when asked why he trains in the morning and why that takes president over all things...."It makes me a better person, husband, father, friend, boss, employee and citizen. When I am done with me they can have at me." Forgive me because I am miopic when it comes to Bodybuilding and competition. I have know others families/wives who rebelled over the years. I always thought that it was THEY who had the issues, NOT the Bodybuilder.

Conventional wisdom is that you have to look "too dark" in normal lighting to appear correct on stage. Of course, lighting at the Expo isn't like stage lighting.

I probably will end up looking quite dark Friday. I'm talking can't-guess-my-ethnicity dark!
