Last year I did not arrive at the hotel until 5:30 ish. I still had time to warm up HDG for the O40s SHWs. Ed Cook did not come on until 6:30ish and the O70s I wanted to see were not on stage until about 7:30-8pm. If anything the show will be larger and longer/later yet again.

Paula is kicking my ass in this leaning out contest. I gained a lb yesterday, so now I am back to 206! I will have to just cut the calories more.

Pretty much I am:p
Down another 1/2 lb ...I am sure I will hit a wall soon.
In the end it will all even out.

Speaking of shoulders, I did them late this afternoon...

Standing bb shoulder press, no cheating: 10/115 8/125 5/135 3/145 3/145

Neutral grip seated db press: 7/55 6/55 6/55 4/60 3/60

Hammer grip standing lateral raises with 25's: 10 11 8 9 9

Bentover reverse flys with 50's: 9 10 10 10 8

Saw some guys doing strongman practice, and asked them how to get started in it. One guy said just show up when they show up. 4pm every Friday.

Guess what I am doing next friday afternoon???

hammer grips really work, if it hurts it is working!

I can't wait to see if I am good at any of the strongman stuff. I have two big disadvantages:

short ( you have to push press the atlas stones up on the platforms when you are short. a tall guy just sets them on the platforms)

small hands (axle deadlifts are hard when you can't wrap your hand all the way around the bar!)

Are you going to attempt to do this new program in a deficit? Congrats man; I've been waiting over a year for you to change it up like this! I think this is gonna be invaluable to you.

How's the program gonna look? You have the fine points ironed out yet?

Cross purposes, but I want to cut about 15-20lbs over the next few months, no set timetable. I guess I will find out how well you can gain strength while cutting. I really have decided I want to cut my heart disease risk down (dad died at 44), and to do that I need to be leaner. No more bulking and cutting for me. It's too rough on me to yo yo, especially since I have body image issues anyway. I don't see a reason why you have to have a pot gut to be a strongman or powerlifter, even though that seems to be the typical stereotype

OTL sent me a program that I am probably going to try, I will announce details when I start it!

Headed to do chest, the floor man at the gym is going to help me with my form and we are going to try to figure out why I have a hard time touching the bar to my chest, and why I can only do 225 once, even not touching my chest.

Good session today, got a lesson on benching...arched back, shoulders down and pinched together, and grip bar tight, push from below the chest instead of from up high.

I even used a pvc pipe under my lower back to help me get the right position. On my db work I hung my head of the bench to help get the shoulders back.

Apparently by laying flat and pressing from up to high, I was doing almost all front delt work instead of pecs!

I did 5 sets of flat using 185: 10 8 5 7 7

5 sets of db flat using 70 for 2 sets, and 65 for 3 sets

then 4 sets of flat flys using 40's

Nice work Mike. I had someone (I think it was Rich or Rob) tell me about squeezing the shoulders back and together last year and have been doing it ever since. Except for the recent shoulder injury (not related) I have had no pain or injuries. Well, the shoulder was from benching but that was because I had a back muscle already pulled and it twinged and caused me to drop my shoulder....so technically....

anyway...good work bro

That's everything I changed on my form after shoulder rehab.....except I was already arching and pinching shoulders back. Now I just exaggerate all of these techniques and touch basically at the sternum.

Good job Mike!

Paula and I talked quite a bit this morning about the stress that we put ourselves through about our weight. We aren't even doing a show or anything like that, and there is no reason for us to pressure ourselves. We have decided to emphasize the positive, and to keep our diet contest-like during the week, but to emphasize having fun on the weekends. For example, having popcorn at the movies, or a small slice of cake at a party, or a glass or two of beer or mixed drinks.

Sure I still have a goal of getting a few lbs off, because my pants are snug and I would like them to fit better, but there is not a timeline for this...if it takes 3 weeks or 3 months, what's the difference!

The key for me is going to be the 5 weekdays, and how I do holding the line on overeating on those days. By doing well during the week, I will not gain by eating a little more on Saturday or Sunday.

I think we will do better if we stop stressing so much about things!

Thank you Erin, for planting the seed of being reasonable!

Paula and I watched the Raising the Bar series and the "I Wanna Look Like That Guy" documentary over the weekend and they were really interesting.

Contrasting the almost pro level bodybuilder with an average guy trying to do a show was pretty eye opening.

Just one example: Dave Pulcinella was cutting for his show and I bet he was easily eating 3000 calories a day. For breakfast alone he was eating 20 egg whites and I think 2-3 whole eggs. Tuna by the case, sweet potatoes, etc. I believe he was eating every 2 hours as well, which meant 8 meals a day.

Contrast that with the average guy in the other movie who started at about 2000 a day and was eating 1350 the last two weeks. This would be me when I do my show.

Another thing I saw in the average guy video is how he was able to hold and actually increase his muscle mass during his cut by eating enough protein and doing low reps, heavy weight exercises, along with only 15-20 min a day of intense cardio.

I now know what the Max OT method is that he was told to do by his coach. Do 4-6 reps. Once you can do 6, up the weight

I think guys who add mass while contest dieting are already a bit lean when they start prep....and it's usually not their first rodeo either. We first timers would have a more difficult time with it I think.

This guy started at 204, 27% bf!!!!

I know he had a lot of newbie gains, but I think the point was he held onto them when he cut to 156. I think his lean body mass remained the same or even went up on the cut, and he lost 40lbs!

I did a decent back session today, did not keep track of weight too well, but it was heavy/

Front pulldowns, leaning back to simulate a wide grip seated row
Underhand close grip chins
Bentover bb rows
BB shrugs

4 sets each

I am looking at doing Max OT instead of powerlifting. I have not decided yet, but I am leaning to Max OT because I want to lean out and do a show someday. Powerlifting while cutting doesn't seem too smart.

Looking at the articles right now, and it is very in-depth and makes so much sense. Every session is done with one thing in mind: to build strength and muscle.

Here is a link to the page you can go to and register your name and email address, and then you get access to a 12-week course on Max-OT.

What else should a program try to accomplish? (see bolded statement)

The program sounds similar to Scivation's Tri-phase.....not knocking it, just saying anything you do with the right intensity will produce muscle stimulation and growth. The key here is that you're excited about it; which means you'll put that much more into it.

Two thumbs up man!!!

I like it because it has a system that I can follow instead of meandering aimlessly. The simple part of it is, 8-9 working sets for 4-6 reps each set. If you can do 6 in all sets, then you up the weight next session. Spend no more than 40 minutes lifting, preferably 30.

I also like the cardio 15-20 minutes at high intensity. that's it. None of the slogging for 60-90 minutes on a treadmill.

I wish I knew if any of my other supplements were causing it, or if my TRT could be effecting it adversely.

I know around the time of the Arnold, I was registering 115-120/75-80. I can't believe 20lbs would make a big difference like that, but maybe it does. It's not like I am fat though, I am 18% bf which is not a horrible % for a 48 year old.
