keep the diet clean and do cardio!

We plan to start the OCD diet soon where we eat like bodybuilders, only not at a deficit.

I know I need to do more cardio, just have to suck it up and get started! Probably will do it at home before work.

Cardio is the easiest part for me. I could do it all day...granted I'd get fucking sick of it, but I won't complain about having to do it.

I grew to intensely dislike it when Palumbo had me doing 2 hours a day instead of cutting my calories! I would lift, do an hour of cardio before work, and then go and do another hour after work. I hardly even lost weight doing it.

This time I am going for the intervals and doing only 15-20 minutes at a time

robert da strongman

the intervals should help with the strongman stuff. strongman is more like a sprint anyway..

Exactly! Every time I carried that 200lb sandbag 50 ft and climbed the power stairs last Sunday, I felt like I had run full speed for a lap around a track!

I did end up stopping with him after about 12 weeks....I think that his plan works if you are using HGH, clen and other supplements, and are trying to preserve muscle. Average Joe's have to go about it differently.

So I should start looking for a buffet to treat you to, just in case? Please don't tell me the whole strongman team from your gym is thinking about coming?! I will have to rob a bank.

(explanation: I posted on the meet invite thread that I would treat any out of town RX competitors to a post game dinner!)

Mike, do you have any Irish or Scottish blood in your veins? If so, you should research the kilt to go with that name.

Actually no Scottish at all, but several Irish names from a few generations ago. None recent. I have the following Irish names in the tree: Quinn, Hurley, Ferrell, Daugherty, and Shaw. I tried to find family kilts for them, but was unable to

Believe it or not, my surname of Gartman is the only Germanic name in the family tree on either side...dates back to the 1700's, and has somehow carried down. That Gartman was actually Swiss, not German. I have never heard anyone say they were of Swiss extraction other than me.

My mom's side is where the Irish side is, but from way before the potato famine. Settlers in the Appalachians way back in the 1700's

I think you're right in that I was exhausted...did deadlifts Thursday night, then did the sandbag carry Sunday, then did upper back Monday night, including shrugs. I think my back was just exhausted. Every week was working ok as long as we spaced it out correctly.

Still jealous that it didn't affect Paula that way! :hypno:

they have two thick ropes laid accross the floor mats. one guy stands on the end of the ropes on one side. On the other end, the guy picks one rope up in each hand and starts whipping them up and down until he can't do it anymore. Brutal on the front delts it looks like!

We've got some crazy new system in the gym. Included are a pair of those heavy ropes. Makes a weird sound but looks effective.

Meant to say it's stashed on the bb court. Maybe some sort of crossfit thing?

It's called battle rope exercises. Great program from what I have researched. It improves core and shoulder girdle strength. Am gonna try it sometime with GM.

Long time without posting, but we had a lot going on...

Friday we managed to do a shoulder workout, but it wasn't the best. Paula was just worn out from long hours and not eating enough. I lifted a decent amount, but not many sets. I don't recall all my sets of push press, but I managed 175 for 1 rep. A guy at the gym who does strongman came over and told me I needed to shoot my head forward as the bar passed my face. He said that you almost have to hit your forehead on the bar. Also he said I was bending my legs to much before doing the actual press, he said it should be just a tiny dip and then an explosion up. He told me it looked like I was doing a front squat motion before pressing. I did a couple of more sets at lighter weight, and he said I looked a lot better. Can't wait to try the correct way next time we do shoulders

Anyway, we then took the weekend off as I worked most of Saturday, and then we headed to Blacksburg to see the swim meet on Sunday. My daughter added time on most events, but we did get to see her cut .2 sec off her 50 fly on Sunday. We then drove home and rode along the Blue Ridge Parkway part of the way.

Highlights of the trip:

Paula's first ever visit to Cracker Barrel:

Busy busy week, but we did train 4 times since we last posted our training

Thursday, we did chest, just to have a change:

Incline bb press, working sets listed: Paula: 6/65 5/75 3/80 2/80
Mike: 6/135 5/155 3/175 2/175

Pec deck: Paula: 10/50 8/60 5/70 4/70
Mike: 7/150 5/160 4/160 6/150

Dips, body weight: Mike: 13 15 11
Bench dips: Paula: 12 12 12

We made some tactical errors in planning our training, because we then proceeded to do shoulders on Friday, triceps already being fried!

Push press: Paula 3/65 2/65 2/65 4/65 (paula started to get the hang of the technique)
Mike: 6/115 5/135 4/155 2/175

Side laterals: Mike: 6/35 8/35 7/40 5/40
Hammer laterals: Paula: 10/5 10/10 10/10 10/10

Face pulls:Paula: 6/96 8/84 6/96
Mike: 8/120 9/120 10/120

Saturday we dead deadlifting...working sets listed

Paula: 4/175 2/205 2/205 1/225 (shattering her personal best by 10lbs!)

Mike: 4/315 3/365 2/405 1/425 (ties the highest I ever have done, but I used straps the other time!)

This morning we trained for just the sandbag carry: Paula lifted and carried the 100lb sandbag 4 times for 40', and two of those times, she went up the power stairs with it

I carried the 200lb bag 4 times and went up the stairs twice, almost died!

Back training tonight

Mike - Pull ups 9 8 7 5 6

Me - ( I do plan on adding pull ups... at least assisted soon since I am getting stronger ) Wide grip Lat pulldowns 10/60 8/84 6/96 5/108 1/120

Close grip seated rows
Mike - 6/228 6/240 5/252 3/264

Getting excited about the caber toss clinic Sunday...should be fun to see a world class Highland Games athlete (Gene Flynn) up close, and have him teach us the caber toss and the weight over bar.

Only 7 people are signed up for it as far as I can tell, so it should be a lot of individual attention for me and Paula.

The cabers came in about 3 days ago, and just look like big tree limbs. Not sure how it's possible to flip them, but I am determined to do it.

As part of the ordering process, I was required to measure my true waist size (they emphasize waist size in inches, not pants size). When I taped my waist at the navel, I got 41", down a little bit where the kilt will be, I got 40"

In either case, this ended my bulk, and I am now cutting. 40+ inches at the waist is a heart attack waiting to happen.

It's a tough call when your dad passed away from heart failure at 44. I have that in the back of my mind all the time when I start getting heavier.

I would like to fit in 34's again, and maintain some strength.

guess that should be the gauge...how is the strength holding while you drop weight.

I didn't know we were cutting now:dunno:
Thought we were just slowing the bulking down and keeping the food less junk and carbs...guess that is kinda like cutting :)

Still feel like crap ... decided to at least do a lighter workout tonight since I hate missing a workout and hate not being with Trainer Mike ;)

Mike, have you had a thallium stress test? Getting one should ease your mind about an early check out. I had one 4.5 years ago and plan on asking the doc when I should get another. My dad died 3 days before his 58th.

I didn't mean cutting like a bodybuilder cut, just a slow cut to get back to eating right and leaning out a little.

I haven't had any type of stress test since right after my dad died in 1985. I will talk to my doctor about it.

Thanks, Ax! will go check it out!

Paula is still pretty sick, just icky, tired, congested and weak feeling. I don't feel great, but nothing definite like she has. I am amazed that I haven't come down with it yet. She has been sick since Friday morning, and so far, I am ok.

We went Monday night and did a back workout, but kept it easy.

I did 4 sets of neutral grip pullups, 4 sets of narrow grip seated rows, and 3 sets of the T-bar rows where you lie on the pad face down at 45 degrees

Paula did the same except she substituted narrow grip lat pulldowns for pullups.

Allergies are kicking my ass, and Paula is still getting over her cold. We did go Saturday and do shoulders, and I managed 1 rep at 180 on the push press in my final set. We did push press, hammer laterals, and seated reverse flys at pec deck.

Sunday we went to do even practice with the kegs and sandbag, and I could hardly do the kegs, let alone even pick up the sandbag. So we did the keg part twice, and a couple of lengths of the floor pushing a weighted sled. That afternoon we took the girls on a bike ride down on the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail, which is the old US 17 that runs right next to the Canal. 8 miles round trip. Really feel tired from the allergies though.

Tonight we are going to do deads, but just do them lighter and get some work in.

What was totally depressing on Sunday was, I tried to do a keg press with 100 lb keg, and couldn't even clean it. If I do the July strongman contest, I have to do 150 184 and 200 in that event. It just won't be possible.

I thought I would bring my journal up here to be with BigDaddyD's.

I started on keto a week ago Monday and it has kicked in pretty well now.

I am 212 on the nose this morning according to my home scale...I am down 11 now since my trip to Mexico in mid August.

My plan right now is to do the following in order to claim both trophy's at the Rx Muscle Arnold competition:

Keep the same training split and do 16-20 sets per session in 4 different exercises...I never do the same exact things 2 weeks in a row:

M-legs
T-chest
W-back
Th-shoulders
F-arms

Note, I do not do any ab or calf work...the good Lord gave me calves so I concentrate on the stuff he did not give me.

Cardio after training, starting at 60 minutes per day. Will do cardio only on weekends both days. Target heart rate of 125-130 for now.

Diet is going well, typical day is:

Preworkout at 6 am: 2-3 eggs and 1 cup of egg whites, scrambled..with hot sauce

Postworkout: 2 scoops of whey and 1.5 tbsp of peanut butter

Meal 3: tuna or chicken, 2 cups of green veggies, almonds or peanut butter depending on what I have around

Meal 4: same as 2

Meal 5: chicken or steak, veggies

Meal 6: same as 2.

taking the following supplements, most at doctor's orders to help with my heart disease risk:

fish oil: 2 capsules 3x a day
vitamin c: 2g a day
CoQ10: 100mg 2x a day
Gluco/MSM: 2 a day
Multivitamin: 1 a day
ZMA: 3 a day
niacin: 500mg 2x a day, slow release
Green tea extract: 1 3x a day

No fat burners for now, but I have some on hand if need them
good luck! thanks for sharing!

Last night we went and deadlifted. I was surprised we were able to do as heavy as we did:

Not sure of all of Paula's sets, but she did do 2 reps at 205 on her final set.

I did 8/315 4/365 3/385 2/405

Great job you two!!!

So you guys are not doing the one in July at all?

We will attend, but not compete. We will be moving that weekend into my old house, and then we will spend a lot of time fixing things up, so we will spend the summer training. We both need to train harder and get better at overhead pressing. The beer keg press is impossible as they have it in the July 2 meet. I would have to do 154, 180 and 200 lb kegs, and Paula would have to do 50, 100 and 154!!! I can push press only about 180lbs with a normal bb right now.

We are thinking about competing in a highland games in late October or another one in early November which is going to be hosted by Gene Flynn down in Currituck County NC.

Glad you guys had fun! Looks/sounds like you did better than you expected.

My goal was to succeed at the highland games events, and I did both...I threw the caber at 11:00, and got weight over bar at 10'. I did really well at the strongman medleys, but I can tell you, almost everyone died pulling a chain 50'...everyone was trucking up until they hit 35-40' and then their legs turned to jelly...I fell with about 5' left, but got my ass back up and finished!

Paula did great too, I am really proud of her for trying so hard, and she is going to get better really fast.

Just to show you how well she did: There were only two ladies, Paula and a 28 year old, 5'9" girl. Since there were only 2 people, I believe they scored the events 2 points for the winner of the event, and 1 point for 2nd. Paula won the keg/sandbag medley, lost the wieght over bar, and lost the caber toss. So she was down 5-4 going into the wheelbarrow/chain medley. The 28 year old beat her by 1 second, so won 7-4. If Paula had gone 2 seconds faster she would have tied the girl 5-5, and would have won overall because the highland games rules award the tiebreaker to the lighter competitor. So that 2 seconds meant a lot!

it felt like a feather. I guess the adrenaline takes over. I did fall with the first beer keg, a 180lber. It was weird, I was basically running with it, and just fell...didn't even feel heavy. I got up and finished that one too.

The results were posted and here is how I stacked up against the very experienced big boys:

Weight over bar
Heath Thiel, 297lbs (I believe he is 41): 16'
Tim Stallings, 273lbs (I believe he is 43): 15'
Me (49 years young, 217lbs): suckish at only 10'

Keg/Keg/Sandbag carry and load medley:
Heath: 31 seconds
Tim: 29 seconds
Me: 39 seconds

Caber Toss:
Heath: 12 o'clock on attempt 2
Tim: 12 o'clock on attempt 1
Me: 11 o'clock on attempt 2

Wheelbarrow push/chain pull medley:
Heath: 27 seconds
Tim: 29 seconds
Me: 34 seconds

I was disappointed on the medleys, but have to remember how big these guys are, how much younger they are than I , and the fact they have tons of experience!
