sophie duquette she is so beautiful : ) I agree. But Sophie is as beautiful on the inside as that "container" she walks around in, and I'll tell you a story that best illustrates my point.
Several years back, Sophie was competing at the Ms. International in Columbus. That year she wore a Ying and Yang black & white colored suit. She also carried a small Asian decorated fan as a prop and used two chop sticks to secure her hairstyle in place. The look was stunning and beautifully thought out. She was also in exquisite condition. I managed to capture two photos at the beginning of her routine before I sat back to watch what I felt would be a very special performance. It was.
I have had the opportunity over the many years to view thousands of posing routines and it is rare that I am moved to tears when a bodybuilder presents a physique display that says so much more then just how muscular her physique has become. Some..... a very few, transcend the mere flexing of muscle. They tell a story of and with a physique that has become unique by virtue of its development. In other words, they GET IT.
That night Sophie's performance was magic. Her choreography was a series of movements that showed the true beauty of a weight-trained woman. It's what bodybuilding ought to be about. I will never forget Sophie's time on stage that night, and it left me with a lump in my throat.
Backstage I had the occasion to compliment her on what a superb posing routine she had performed . Then I told her how classy I thought the use of the fan and chop sticks had been in her overall "finished" look. I also told her the performance had moved me to tears.
A few weeks later I received a package from Quebec......from Sophie Duquette. She had sent the fan and chop sticks to me with a touching note of thanks for my appreciating the effort she had put forth.
Funny, I don't even recall where she placed that night. I know she didn't win. But of course when a competitor GETS IT, it should never matter where they place.
The two photos from the start of her performance along with the fan and chop sticks occupy a shadow box on my office wall near my desk. It is a continual remainder to me about all the good things women's bodybuilding represents. And it will be one of my cherished memories after I have written my last article on the women of muscle.
