To all the Masters here, speak up, let us know who you are and if you compete or not. List your intended shows this year or tell us about your journey in training if you're not a competitor!

I'll start; I'll be 52 in May. I started back into bodybuilding in 2004 after a 14 year absence from the gym following a 14 year bodybuilding journey. My best showing in my previous career was 2nd in the tall class in the '86 AAU Jr. USA. I won the tall class in the '90 Mr. Midwest, then quit to return to college and finish raising my family.

I waited to enter a show on my return until I turned 50. I've competed 4 times; the '07 Muscle Mayhem (2nd, 50-over), the '07 Central States (50-over Champion), the '08 Flex Wheeler Classic (3rd in 40-over...no 50 over class), and the '08 Masters Nationals (6th superheavy).

I intend to compete in August in the North American BBing Championships and perhaps one yet-to-be-decided show.

My wife is also a bodybuilder and competes in the same shows I do. She's much better than I am!

Thanks Esplendido for taking the lead. I think this new forum is going to be great and I'm really glad Dave and John broke loose from MD - this way they can do what's in the best interest of the bodybuilders and not be tied to some 130 lb control geek.

My name is Allen Smolenski and I work as an emergency physician here in Myrtle Beach, SC. I will be 45 this May. I am married to Donna who is planning to do her first figure show this year and I have 4 kids aged 17, 12, 10 and 7. Before medical school I served in the Navy as a nuclear surface warfare officer - doing a combat tour in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm. I've lifted weights on an off my whole life but didn't get serious until about a year and a half ago when I topped the scales at 232 with about 30% body fat. I started lifting again just for the exercise but then last year decided to do my first bodybuilding show after some encouragement from friends.

I entered the NPC Natural Northern USA October 2008 and placed 3rd out of 13 in the open Middleweights and 8 out of 9 in the Masters Heavyweights. I did better in the open because at 174 lbs I was in the top of my weight class while in the Masters I was at the bottom of my weight class. I have a lot of respect for the Masters - most of those guys have been competing for 20 or more years and it shows.

I am up to 190 now in the off season and I am trying to put on a few pounds of muscle while keeping the fat to a minimum. My next show is in October - I am going to take 1st in the open Middleweights and move up the Masters ranks at the NPC Natural Northern USA - my long term goal is to be competitive at Team Universe and the NPC Masters Nationals. I have been natural so far and it will be interesting to see how far that will take me in bodybuilding. For me this sport is a perfect way to keep aging at bay and competing motivates me to keep going the course.

Bodybuilding.com did a transformation article on me recently if anyone cares to see it here: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/allen_smolenski.htm

Good to see you guys here also...This is gonna be good...BTW, I will be 52 in May, 6'1", 236lbs @ 7% bf. Started bodybuilding when I was 26 and weighed 187lbs. Competed in 2 shows placing 2nd in one and 7th in the other...Plan on competing again this year although it has been about 20 years

Mike here. 47, lifting for 3 and a half years now. Wish I had started sooner, and am just glad I finally did. The best is yet to come. I hired Dave P for diet coaching 2 weeks ago, and am trying to get down to 10% bf and see whether I have abs. I hear we all have them, but I am not sure I do, since I have never seen them! lol

Once I make it to 10% bf, and see what's there, I will decide whether to compete, or just keep lifting.

I look forward to the company here.

bryan, 41yo former powerlifter and strongman. several injuries, most notably a C 5/6/7 fracture and trapezious tear. bought some bone graft and hardware for that injury. started lifting again and went from 330lbs, 23%BF and a 47" waist to a current 39" waist at 17%BF at 312lbs. working on tightening abs currently, one more bulking cycle and then time to drop BF to 10%. i'll have my umbilical hernia fixed and then start dropping weight. not sure where I will do my first contest. have a great local trainer working with me. I just want to step on stage more than 250lbs and have people ask: where the F*** did this guy come from?

Hi my name is Dean, currently in my mid forties (when i was 40 i tried to forget how old i was!)
Living in the UK, just outside of London.
Been training with weights since my early teens, only really started competing from about 30 upward.
Always ended up being talked into it by professional bodybuilders!
Cant remember how many shows I've done, but won or placed top 3 in most of them (regional and national).
Not really into the competition side of things as i hate dieting, but just love training.
Not to sure on my stats as i just use the mirror as my guide. i do know that I'm about 5"6 in height and the heaviest i used to get was 19 stone (266 pounds) off season.
Ive competed as a middle weight, right through to light heavy and heavy weight.
Right now i haven't been training much due to a shoulder injury, its been taking about 8 months to get better. I suppose that is down to age as I've noticed it takes longer to recover!
Anyway good to be on the boards and i wish you all the best on your endeavours. Take care.

Not really, but thanks, Honey (I'm the wife)!!

I am "still" 45 and most days, my body thinks I'm too old for this sport. And I just do what HE says!!! After all, he is the trainer, and I truly would not have unlocked my potential without his continued "nagging" :D, oh, and of course, support and ego-building encouragement. You Guys aren't the only ones that need ego building;)

At the risk of repeating myself from another post....Masters Not-A-Competitor-Yet here at 41.

Last achieved goal: get down to < 230 and stay there (reset my bio "set point" - about 2 months maintenance). Now that I've done that...
New goal: get down to < 200 and stay there.

Welcome (soon) to the club! We're a fraternity of competitors and non-competitors who, for the most part, finally have the time and resources to train like we want and a wave of masters are flooding the stages. Soon you'll see TOP PRO quality masters muscle fighting with the young'ns neck-to-neck, taking names and kicking ass! :D

Thanks! I agree that we can excel past 40 and I plan to do it. I'm going to be in the best shape of my life when I turn 40!!!! I have intentions to get on stage in the next couple of years but need to execute a couple of things first. I have always put on bodyfat easily and never fully leaned out. I'm in the process of doing that now. Once I've been through the process, I'll put a plan in place to get up there. I'm looking forward to interacting with this group through the process.

Welcome, Reddog! Sounds like you're on the same plan I decided on when I got back into lifting 5 years ago!

Let's see....the math. If you were to drop to 5% BF at your current weight, you'd weigh 212lbs. To come in at 240 and 5%, you'll have to gain approx 27lbs of LBM. And, with proper training, diet AND supplementation (AAS), you might add that 27lbs in 3-4 years, so waiting until you're 50 to compete is a good idea.

I'v won many contest Jr. America, North America, International Grand Prix which qualified me for the NPC nationals. The year Gary Strydom won. Since that time I continue to train regularly and 3 years ago I had bilateral knee replacement.

Currently 52 and still train regularly. I have a complete gym in home so it makes access quite easy. I'm 5'8' currently about 240, I always was in the Heavy wt class weight at last contest was 225.

49 years old, and been training since 79. I've competed in BBing finally attaining my IFBB pro card at the 2004 Canadian masters, and I have also had a pro card with the WNSO back when I was a natty. I've also competed in powerlifting back in the 80s winning the provincials and nationals, and loads of other contests including some strongman (which I sucked at!!LOL!!).

LANCE!!!!! Damn, it's been a long time. Do you remember me from Tulsa and the shows we did there in the 80's? I remember your famous backflip in your posing routine. I used to be Brent Hale's workout partner. I also prepped Brian Crull for the Mr. Texas in the late 80's. Good to see you on the board and still competing! I started BB'ing two years ago.

Last year I competed for the first time in May, then again the end of June.

It was the June show of 2008 that got me HOOKED.

Too bad I am just getting started. I love this stuff....

When I was in my late 20's and 30's I worked out consistently with a trainer. I lived in So. Cal and would train in Long Beach but go to Golds in Venice once a month for motivation. At 5'7", I got up to 180#. Felt and looked great. My shirt collars couldn't close. Then came family and job obligations and I slacked off.

Now, here I am at 54 (almost) and have been working out consistently in the gym since July 2008. I started working out again as part a state of the art age management program I was part of. I got certified in age management and worked with a brilliant physician who taught me much about this interesting field. I no longer work in age management, but use what I have learned in my current practice of addiction medicine. Some of this knowledge is shared in Q & A on my forum on Addiction Medicine & Sports (http://forus.rxmuscle.com/forumdisplay.php?f=63) this board.

I'm 5'7" 158# and have a great trainer, NYC Big Mike. I work out 3 days a week. I'm starting to gain muscle now because of the great training and I have increased my calorie intake and eat 5 meals a day.

I'm here to get support and associate with other guys who have similar goals as I do.

I was with you, Vo2, until you got to that deadbeat, NYC Big Mike....LOL!!!

Seriously, though, were you a runner at one point in your life (since VO2 is 'volume of oxygen uptake', typically calculated for endurance sports)?

Welcome to our growing community. Keep us up to date on your progress, and certainly come to me when Mike screws up your training :D

My first sport was running. I loved it until my right knee started to bother me. I switched to eliptical and bike now. I had a "coach" who ran internationally as a sprinter. He'd help me once a week and ten I ran 3 other days a week. The rush is tremendous. I also ran in AM and it was a great start for the day.

Now, for the last 11 months I've been doing resistance training. I did not keep up the calories and lost 10 lbs in 6 months. I've had 2 trainers before Mike. All were great but not bodybuilders. Then I met up with Mike about 2 months ago. He's ripping me up so I can repair and grow 3 x/wk. Who knew negatives could feel so good? I am now eating 5 meals a day and gaining weight (mainly muscle).

I am doing cardio 2 days a week for 30 min on bike. The knee feels fine.

I'm turning 54 this Saturday and am more committed than before to do the work in the gym.

Currently on the Keto diet but wondering if I can tweak it somehow and still grow a little muscle while trying to drop about 30 lbs. Doing 200mg of test and 50mg of decca twice a week. Hope to compete in about a year at about 230. Working out 5 days a week at the gym and still working 6 days a week in construction.

Rodney......no, no muscle growth on the keto diet, especially with the AAS dosage you're on. If you upped the test to 250mg/eod and the deca to 100mg/eod, you might eek out a pound of lean mass throughout the diet, but usually, no.

Absolutely! You can use the carb rebound to make some very nice gains in the 4-6 weeks following the diet, and maintain those gains for growth on your current AAS Protocol.

I may compete again, but for me it takes a little of the fun away when it gets too serious. I mainly want to look decent because I love younger beautiful women!

I saw mix of both receding hairlines & expanding bellies. I'd say it was the ladies who looked better at my reunion.

I had a small sample size, so it was probably not valid!

I would agree, it is the women that look better. Not all but more of them.

I would add the modifier, the women did not necessarily look horrible, they just looked a lot older than the guys, IMO.

Some of the guys looked exactly the same in the face except their hair was gray.

I actually look about 10x better now than I did 30 years ago, according to my wife.

I can't pass for 39 any more, but she used to tell me that I have looked 30 ever since she met me. I looked 30 when I was 19, and I looked 30 when I was 40.

Guys
I feel a 2 to 3lbs weight loss a week is a good goal??
Any thoughts??
Good or bad just looking for some thoughts. So far for me its has been just that. Cardio is being done only one time in the am and I also follow Daves Diet. Monday I will start cardio 2 times daily .I feel this also will help with leaning me out. People in Colorado named Rodney need not reply!!!LOL!!!!

Dom, 2 pounds a week is ideal. I wouldn't add any cardio while you're losing at that rate. If the weight loss slows, that's the time to add more cardio. If you lose faster than 2 lbs/wk after the first 3-4 weeks of the Keto diet, you're losing muscle with it. Sounds as though you're doing very well! Keep it up and post some progress pics!!!!

Hi Guys! Haven't been around for a while... busy working and dieting for Masters Nationals. I was wondering.. I have been dieting for 4 weeks and have lost alot in bf. I 'am wondering if this could all it could also be water loss. I feel like I have lost way too much body fat in just 4 weeks..is this normal? On Daves diet. I am happy but conserned ...

If you're losing more than 1-2lbs/wk, you're losing too fast. Is Dave guiding your diet or are you using his diet as pulled from the forums?

Do you know for sure that you are losing bodyfat and not muscle mass. How are you measuring progress? Skin fold caliper bodyfat measures? Scale? How your clothes fit? If you just started Dave's diet from a regular (carb-including) diet, I'd expect to see an initial dramatic weight drop due partially to water weight. But that should settle down after a while.

I'd aim for an average of about 1kg loss a week.

But having said that when I do a keto diet I dump weight (not fat) super fast the first few weeks then it levels out. when I go back on carbs it's easy to throw 5kg on in the first week or two. So it has to be water weight, nothing else makes sense.

I am following the diet on the forum, along with the primrose & omega 3's, vitamins and lipoloze & somalyze. I have lost 3% each week for 3 weeks and last week I lost 2% for a total of 11%.
I started at 126 lb and am at 118. I am doing 45 min of walking never going higher than 117 heart rate, I stay between 106-117 most of the time. I do 1x a day. I get the skin fold test done by the same pt.
I just cant believe that this kind of body fat loss is possible!

I competed Saturday at the NPC Natural Michigan bodybuilding contest (here in Detroit). I did not place well: 3rd of 3 in the Grand Masters. But I was pretty pleased with my conditioning, and the entire experience was just plain fun. The contest ran very smoothly and on-schedule this year.

Comparisons from Pre-Judging for our class can be seen over here (http://www.rxmuscle.com/rxgallery.php?comparison_classes=199).

I pretty much know what work I have to do, but feel free to chime in with your advice(s).

Nice conditioning! One word: Size! You have a small skeletal frame and tiny waste which, without substantial size, gives the illusion of smallness. But that frame is a plus because of the tiny waist and narrow muscle insertions. With wide lats and big delts you'll make others look wide waisted and blocky.

Take a year to get as big as you can, focusing on back, delts, and tri's and you'll move up significantly. Lift H E A V Y !!!
