Found this site through Gman. I've been following his progress for a long time. I'm really liking the attitude on this site. Thought I would join in and hope to meet more online friends and talk BB.

I am 51. Started lifting at 20 years old. Got into a couple small contests. Got married at 26 and raised a family of four kids. In 2004 I got back into it. By 2006 I had some health issues to deal with. Stopped in 2007. Back at it again for the past 6 weeks.

I was a skinny fat type kid right up until I started training. I starting working with a guy that was into lifting. Started with him at the local YMCA. Through him I met a lot of guys that trained hard and competed. I learned a lot through them. Ended up joining a more hard core gym. The Steel Pier. Always liked that name.

I was 170#'s in high school at 5'11". After 4 years of training I was in the 200#'s with around the same bodyfat. Decided the only way I would get cut is to get on stage. Did it two years in a row. First show I was 173 and a year later 183. Not big but big for me! I got 2nd and 3rd place trophies.

Trying to get things current now. Tired of saying I used to do this and used to do that! Everything is still clear 25 years later! Can't remember one minute to the next though. I would love to get in great shape again and shock my kids.

Going to try to make this my year! I am heavier than ever now at 235. Lots of fat even though I carry it fairly well with clothes on, haha. That's the intro. To follow will be diet, training, excuses, PR's, and probably off topic stuff too.

I started back this time with mainly compound lifts. Very slowly! I had a rough start. Very shaky and weak after a few sets. My legs are terrible. I have always gotten leg cramps but now they are worse. It is just a matter of getting them accustomed to lifting again. It's been 6 weeks and I am finally getting a little better.

Only doing one major lift a workout still. Sometimes I throw in some db curls. I am finding my lifts are increasing faster than ever since I am not burning myself out with a big split routine. I will change after I plateau.

strong on the bp, bro...you always were weren't you?

I don't even think I can rep 225 once.

Here I go again with the used to but...I could do 325 once and 275 x 10. I could squat 385 x 10 and 430 x 1. Shoulder presses with 205 for reps. That's about all I remember. My knees always get to me before my squats get up there. They did in my 20's too. I am doing box squats now. I seem to be able to keep the pressure off my knees with them. The knees usually start feeling it in the 250 range. We'll see what happens this time. My left elbow gets bad quick when I do quite a few lifts. Just doing the lifts I have has been good. The pain is gone for now.

Bob45

Okay I am 235#'s now. I want to get to 200 by May. I probably have 165 pounds or so of LBM so at lot of fat. Starting at 2800 calories or so. The macros are not where they should be yet. The diet part is just starting. I was eating so much crap it is unbelievable.

Take it slow, it will come back pretty good. I am weak as hell, but look strong. I am not sure that's a bad thing. I can hardly shoulder press 135, bench 225 maybe once, and squat 275 for 2-3 reps if I am lucky...deadlift I got 425 once when I was eating all the time! A born puller.

With that big pull you should be able to bench more. Don't you have shoulder problems? I finally warm up enough and don't let my form go. My shoulders got hurt many times before I did that.

No spotter? No problem. On heavy barbell I use the Smith Machine or power rack with side bars, on heavy dumbells I just drop the mothers.

I eat crap for a few days and I am in trouble.
Hope you get some energy and get your shoulder workout in:)

Thanks! I did. Sometimes you get a good one in even if you don't feel good. You have to give it a shot. I've done one set and left plenty of times. I figure if it isn't going to be productive why bother?

LMFAO!

I am 45 I do extremely well in the PIT.

A1 is not really that bad man, the guy is actually very intelligent. I have been PMing with him back and fourth on some info I need and he is very well educated. But he definitely is a ball buster

You are 45. You look younger. I looked young until 50. Now I am aging fast!

Tonight's shorty.

Seated db presses

Seated db curls

Took some videos of my basement workout area and workout. I'll try to get them loaded soon if they came out okay.

For a majority of my older years I have been 185-195. I was 235 at the heaviest just a week ago. I'm seeing 233 now. Long way to go.

It sure saves a lot of time.

What's a basement?

I'm not good at explaining things but... In a lot of houses in our area they make the houses with deep foundations. Besides digging the 4 feet down to go below the frost line they go down deeper. That gives you an underground living area that is below the main level. The furnace, hot water heater, circuit breaker box are usually down there. It also make a good storage area. Many people make family rooms in half of the basement here. It is great for storage besides having an attic above the living area. Now hopefully you really didn't know what a basement was.

Good crew visiting me here! Tonight I will be back to bench presses. As I said when the increases stop I will change my very short program. So far I am gaining strength fast so why change? I am way off from my young years but almost back to where I got so far in my older age. Now that I am eating good maybe I can get past where I was before.

I am also on HRT from being high on Estrogen which gave me wicked prostate problems. I also had low Testosterone that gave me constant fatigue. When I trained it was worse. I am better so far but my endurance is still way off. A little bit takes a lot out of me. Just had more tests to see if I am still in the correct ranges with everything.

Fat loss will also be interesting again. My body is saying WTF are you doing this time? I am eating around 2500 calories a day. I will stay at that for a while. It is basically the good meals I have been eating minus tons of crap I was adding in for the last two years. I couldn't even count the extra calories.

So far it has been around 3 weeks. Nothing happening yet. I will hold steady for a while longer. My pants are just as snug around the waist. I was 230 for the longest time. I went up to 235 probably from gaining muscle with the new workouts. I am up and down 232-235 depending on the time of day and water I am holding.

I don't want to drop calories while I am gaining strength. I want the muscle so I can eat more later. I don't want to make the mistake of depriving my muscles of the calories they need to grow. Fat loss is still going to be the main goal later. That will come after the strength plateaus. I am in no hurry. The only show I will be doing is taking my shirt off next summer boating!

Here is what I have been eating lately. Looks like a maintaining type diet. Certainly not a BB diet. I cut out all snacks and desserts. I was eating a lot of them. A real lot! I am surprised I am not feeling my pants loosen up. To be honest they feel a little tighter. Weird. A lot of nights I would go through a bag of red licorice. Sometimes a huge bowl of popcorn with butter. A couple big bowls of cereal, or cake, ice cream, pie, candy. There are people that don't ever crave this stuff. I had snack after most meals too.

Meal 1 - 8:00am
cup oatmeal after cooked
1/2 cup cottage cheese
1 egg 2 whites
little milk
Water

Meal 2 - 11:30am
some type of sandwich with water or milk
2 slices whole wheat
turkey, ground chicken breast, tuna, roast beef
tbspn mayo maybe a little more
Water

Meal3
2:30
protein bar
coffee
Water

Meal4
5:30
one of these; 4-6 ounces
lean ground beef
chicken
steak
fish
ham
pork roast

cup veges or salad

cup of pasta or rice or potato
Water

Meal5
8:30
one of these;
salad with chicken
eggs/cottage cheese
protein shake
protein bar
bowl of cereal
Water

These usually ad up to 2500 calories or so. Not a good macro ratio at all. Too much fat and carbs. Still not what I have been eating to maintain 230+.

My legs are finally getting used to a little more weight without cramping. Great! Cramps are the worst. They ruin the whole rest of the day. I always cramped in school sports too when the season first began. Then I was okay. The funniest time was when I got home from doing a great leg workout. I pulled in the driveway. Got out of the car and fell to the ground. I crawled in the house. The muscles would all bunch up. I would have to punch them to flatten them back out. I am getting old. I do get plenty of potassium and Magnesium. I supplement both. I don't get a gallon of water in because I pee a lot as it is. I do get 60-80 oz. You are good at the diet stuff! I tend to go to extremes too quick. I'm trying not to do that quick this time. Everyone used to tell me to eat more. I am slowly working on the macros. I will eventually try to get it at 225grams P 200grams C 85 grams fat. I hate eating the low or non fat stuff and they do add up fast.

Looks like your squats are not too bad for coming back from a layoff,

My squats are fucking pathetic right now, I went from squatting 495lbs for 10 to 135lbs for 10!

I was happy to see the numbers go up with no cramps. Last night my knees were bothering me already though. That usually doesn't happen until I lift more. I've been doing box squats. Trying to keep my form slow and perfect on the way up. I have a lot more conrol coming up and don't really feel any pressure on my knees. I am going to increase reps instead of weight for a while and see how they do.

There has to be some way around the knee thing. I'll figure it out. In my 20's I could squat 385 x 10. It was good for me since I started like a stick. I started back at 45 years old. That's where I got the name from of course. I only got up to the 250's for reps and had to stop because of my knees. Maybe I increased too fast. Didn't give anything else time to catch up.

I used to want to lift heavy on squats, but I don't seem to need it for my legs to look good.

Trying to remember that I am a bodybuilder not a powerlifter. Look strong vs be strong.

Lately I have been doing 195-225 range and it seems to be working fine.

I don't know what I am. I really enjoy challenging myself to do more all the time. That is what keeps it interesting for me. No one sees my legs so the size isn't what matters to me. I do like water skiing, snowmobiling, I do a lot of stair climbing so I need more endurance in them anyway.

I have two neighbors that look great, they are very strong and never work legs at all. Very long shorts are in style now. No one even sees your legs in the summer anymore. I will never do another show. That was another thing I just wanted to try for fun. It was also the only way I would ever get ripped.

I hope it doesn't come to not doing squats for me. But if it does I'll use my above reasoning to make it okay.

Thoughts for the day.... Last time around I wasn't able to lose any fat until I got my calories down to 1600 - 1800. I sure hope that still isn't true again. Something is still going on with me so I can't burn it off. My endurance just isn't coming back much at all either for some reason. I've been up and down several times with my weight and fat before. It was always easy to lose it again.

I'm thinking I still may have to go low in calories. The weight I gained was all fat. It's amazing how it looks like most of the fat is in my lower back and gut but isn't. My arms are close to 18 inches now. X-large shirts are snug in my chest. I'll stay at 2500 for now and get the macros dialed in better. It's only been 3 weeks. 3 weeks used to be a lot. I know I was eating better than 4000 many days the past couple years.

Besides I am definitely not your typical 45 year old not by a long shot :D

I'm hoping too. I have a business that is slow in the winter. It will depend on how slow it is. I also had mentioned visiting my sister in Orange beach. We will see how the winter goes. I'm afraid you are a lot more hardcore than I am. When I get home when it is light it takes me a week to recover. I am good for real fun in short blasts I guess. Is there a thread with a list of who is going? Wouldn't mind seeing the female list too! Haha.

Had more blood tests taken recently. Waiting for the results. Getting aggravated I can't do much. Even just with work. I have always been a work horse. Now I do a little and I am done. The more I try to do the worse it gets. It should be the other way around to a point. Deadlifts today and cardio again. Did 24 minutes on the bike again last night. Finally upped it one level after several weeks. Not trying to be negative. Just saying how it is. I've always liked to work my ass off physically. That's why I don't have an office job.

Did deadlifts tonight. Wanted to do some reps but my lower back tightens up on high reps

135 x 10
205 x 5
249 x 3
295 x 3
320 x 3

Bike again later. Just had a 7oz, sirloin half a yam and a can of green beans. I'm finally used to no butter or salt added. Diet is on track again.

Some metric some standard. It's a PIA! I'm always counting. Instead of 25's there are 22's. The tens are 11's. Then I bought extra standard plates. I got these spring collars that are a pound apiece. I add those on too! I don't use those on most lifts but when I do I add the 2 pounds.

Why on earth would you do seated DB presses and seated Mil Press in the same workout? That is overkill, seriously. IMO you should keep on or the other and add some other form of shoulder exercise.

That is true but the light db's kind of acted as a warmup. My joints take forever to warmup. I did burn out quick and couldn't do much with the military press. Trying to build some endurance. There that is my excuse, lol. Keep watching I appreciate it.

Ahh OK I see where you are going with that. But why not just start really light with the Mil Press and work your way up? You do realize that although DB press and MIL press are similar the one big difference is that db bring in your stabilizer muscle into play thus they work each shoulder independently, forcing the weaker shoulder to keep up with the stronger shoulder and helping with imbalances.

Thats why I believe the two should be done as there own exercise.

If you want to warm up your shoulders with DB presses, I would go very light or even use some basic shoulder warmup movements,

Actually that is what I normally do. I do a lot of different things all the time. No real reason behind all of it either. I always seem to get bored with a rigid plan. After a while I will have a normal split going. I know being consistant is good.

Good writup they had there. There are a lot of good articles on the site.

I was just in your journal. Slow steady progression always seemed to work best for me that's why I pyramid up like I do. Going light to warmup and then pounding heavy always got me an injury. I do like the suggestions though. I try everything. I always keep what everyone says in mind. I am stubborn but I do listen at times, lol.

I do. I am normally a skinny guy. Lifting is what gave me a little size. I know I can look good cut with certain amounts I can lift and stay lean. If the strength isn't there the muscle isn't there for me either. It's like cutting down to show nothing. You seem to be built bigger naturally. You say you were always overweight. That sure helps the legs.

See now Mike, this is not true, as a matter of fact it is a bunch of bullshit. Some people are genetically gifted in some areas and don't really need to do much to achieve results. Take you for example, you have good legs and you will probably never truly have to bust your ass to get good calves, but take that same analogy and apply it to your chest, arms, abs etc etc. You think if you were not to put in the time and energy to those body parts they would respond?

I don't have to train my arms they grow really quick, but my calves suck, if I neglect my calves they would shrivel down to nothing, but I can go weeks, months without hitting my arms and they will always grow.

So be careful what you say, not everyone is gifted on all bodyparts and the ones that do, well they become Mr. Olympia!

Ohh I agree, bodybuilders don't care for strength, if it comes it comes, and that is why power lifters laugh at bodybuilders. I don't care for strength, not at all.

What I was trying to convey is that, some people are gifted and they could lift very little and still see progress, but if you have a stubborn muscle, like me, (calves), the only way they respond is with extremely heavy weight and high reps. If I did light weight with a million reps they would not respond.

Ever thought about doing any direct rear delt work?

If I get my health back to normal I will do everything under the sun. My shoulders need all they can get. The deads do get them pretty sore. I used to do bent over laterals, a lot of different rows. I did a lot more pulling in that past. I hope to get back to it. Staying very basic for now. I had a bad fatigue problem for a long time. It's slowly getting better.

I found out the hard way, that if I did not do direct rear delt work that I start to get into shoulder stability issues.

I do a lot of bench work type work, inclines, close grip for triceps and military presses that hit my front delts hard as well wide grip upright rowing for lateral delts and I like to balance that with some direct rear delt work.

I do at least 4 sets of reverse lateral flys on back day.
I also do them face down on a bench, I learned that if I do them seated and bent over leaning at a 45 degree incline, it does not hit my rear delts hard.

Yeah,
Its interesting how it gets into your blood and sometimes progresses into a lifestyle

I started out at 18 as a wanna be bodybuilder to try and look like Arnold, trained for 10 years 1.5 - 2 hours a workout 4-6 days a week.
I achieved certain goals like from going from approx 174 to hitting my goal of 250

It then morphed into a diet and training overall lifestyle that has stuck with me for more than 35 years.

I achieved certain goals like from going from approx 174 to hitting my goal of 250

It then morphed into a diet and training overall lifestyle that has stuck with me for more than 35 years.

A guy I worked with looked great. Very muscular. He got me started at 20 years old or so.

I haven't wandered much in the site yet. I didn't know there were albums you could make in your profile. Your pics look great. You should post a before picture so everyone can see what you have accomplished. If there is one I missed it.

I did a couple sets of squats tonight. I have to admit to myself I need to take the increases a lot more slowly. I only started squats on 12/20. I was planning on doing higher reps because my knees hurt from last time. Probably because I jumped up too fast. I did more than I can handle easily tonight again and my lower back is super tight from it. Squats involve a lot so just because I can get more weight up with my legs my knees and lower back can't yet. Had to stop early. Wanted to do more leg exercises. Next time.

Today's meals;

8:30
2 eggs
3 whites
1.5 serving oatmeal
water

11:00
5 ounces ground up chicken breast
tbspn mayo
2 slices whole wheat bread
water

1:00 or so
2 scoops whey
banana
water

2:00 or so
10 almonds
water

3:00 or so
1 cup bean mix(kidney, white, black)
3 tbspmns grated cheese
tomato sauce
water

5:30
cup lean ground beef
1 cup brown rice
1 cup broccoli
water

later at 8:30
whey shake again or a salad with chicken not sure yet. Maybe roast pork with sauce too.
more water

Meals are always different but I end up with the macros pretty close. Somedays more fruit and more salads. Lots of different meats like sirloin, chicken, turkey, roast beef, roast pork, tuna, talapia fish, sometimes fried fish if I am low on fat that day. They make a great breaded fish at a nearby market. At least it looks fried. Olive oil in the salads. Usually have cottage cheese with the oatmeal but we ran out.

Tonight's workout

I did somewhere but I got a metric olympic weight set as a gift. Couldn't say take it back and get standard. It was too good a surprise gift to begin with. I bought a couple 45's and 35's to add on. I have collars too. I'm always adding. I liked the standard plates. I could just look and know right away what I had on there.

Actually he reminds me more of Rod Koontz. Except Bob may have been even better looking.

Don't know him but thanks. Do I know you from other forums. You seem familiar.

Did you go too heavy too soon?

Nope. I could have done a lot more. I was worried about my knees all along. They were throbbing tonight. I'm pretty discouraged about that. I always had knee problems. My left shoulder and elbow hurt from my carpet and upholstery cleaning business. 23 years. I am right handed for most things but do that left handed. I tfeels awkward if I switch and all the tools are setup for my left.

325 on deads is pretty heavy for just starting back!

I am good at pulling. That's where I got the wide back from. Upper back only though. My lower back is weak in comparison which also causes aches. What a sport. Always walking like a cripple, lol.

I was picturing the animals loving your house. I need to clean my basement out too. My parents passed away a few years ago. Since my sisters live far away I had to deal with cleaning their house. There were a lot of things I saved and in my basement now.

Really thinking about my strategy for lifting now. every time I get up from sitting I get a shooting pain in the center of my knee cap. It probably wasn't a brilliant idea to work through the pain with deads last night. It is worse now. The smart thing to do would be stop deads and squats for a couple weeks and let it heal. Then do whatever I can to stay pain free during the day. Besides plain sore muscles.

You don't realize how much you use a joint until you get these pains. 51 years of use. I enjoy just doing all heavy lifts like I am the most. They are the most challenging. I could do a lot more vloume on lighter stuff to build. That may not keep my interest. We'll see. What would you guys do? Meaning guys and girls.
