RIP 19th Street Gym. One of the greatest hardcore facilities I'd ever been to

When did it close? I've had this listing for about a year on the HGR.com website...

It was a sick place. Great equipment, great people. It's a shame because it was one of the few real gyms left in a city dominated by country club gyms

On a side note, I really like that this new forum. I'll definitely use it to find places to work out when I travel

I feel like I have to be 300lbs and 1% bf to train at steel haha. No seriously, the people there are HUGE. I only went once, but went to 19th every time after that cuz they'd let me in for free whereas Steel charged like 30 bucks per visit.

Steel gym is good, but it's way too cramped and small for my training pleasure.

I'm a huge fan of Steel. "Rush" hour can be a bit tight, but it flows though. I usually get there after 9pm so it's all good.

Where do you train?

They do have a lot of competative athletes that train there. Which can be cool.

A good friend of mine trains at 5th avenue gym. Heard good things about it, but have never been there. That's about all I know of the Bk gyms.

19 st was hardly hardcore ...........it was a gay gym with alot of hiv people running around on massive amounts of gh and test .
If you wanna call that hardcore by all means but that word gets used alot now ..........there are only a handful of real gyms still left in nyc
5th ave in brooklyn and eastside gym on 12st and 2nd ave .
What people think is hardcore now is not even close to what we used to call hardcore . Steel is also a gay gym just like 19st .
I could care less about gays in gyms just pointing it out .

What makes a gym gay? Special gay equipment?

How is the equipment at Synergy?

Agree with a point you made in an earlier post. The term "hardcore" gets thrown around so much that it's a cliche now.

The equipment in synergy is decent nothing to go crazy over but it gets the job done . And like i said there are some hardcore nice people that train there .

From the way the description reads, somehow I don't think we're the demographic... Kind of sad the lack of place that those who consider themselves hardcore have too train.

Are you guys keeping the 19th St machines/free weights or replacing them with new equipment and spa space?

Interesting crowd.

V, curious, other than finding a few builders at the gym, how is the crowd interesting? Some of the management and management style are odd (and I'm not referring to them being gay).

Seriously, RIP 19th. For all it's bullshit, it was a good gym. Probably the best in the city.
I went to Steel when I first moved back. Sad that that is as good as we can do for a gym in NYC. It's got the freaks and the casual juiceheads, but it's cramped as hell (with good equipment) and there's no tan/steam/sauna. The front desk dick wouldn't even bother to acknowledge me the first time I went in to ask about membership. This town needs a kick ass Worlds or Golds or something like the good gyms out in Vegas.

Sorry it took me so long to respond to this. My comments were in reference to the members picked up from 19th street gym. I didn't see ANY bodybuilders come from 19th Street gym to Steel. I honestly can not comment on the management style of that place as I was never a member. I can tell you that the ownership & management team at Steel gym are quality people. I used the term "interesting" to be polite about the 19th Street gym refugees that I encountered. It's one of those things that you would have to experience to really understand. Not sure if you're a 19th street gym member that may have taken offence to my comments. If so, I'm just calling it as I see it.
