I don't think there will be any training today, unless I go with my son to Planet Fitness. I have heard some stories about this place, so it will be interesting to check out. I better not drop the 100lb dumbbells, oh wait, they don't have any to drop.

It's back to Erie to check up on the house and get my things in order there and hurry back to OH before the next fucking winter storm comes in. They're calling for another 4-8" on top of the two feet we just got.

I was a PF member for a while. They did have some strange rules and things going on. Pizza on Tuesdays. There was a bowl of tootsie rolls out all the time. You can't do overhead presses. You have to be seated. Yup, no db's higher than 80's. No dropping anything loud. No yelling. They have an alarm if a rule is broken. No cages. You have to spray and wipe everything right after you use it.

I think i will stay home from PF. Gees, that doesn't sound much like a gym.

The funny thing about the one I used to go to is I used to lift in the same gym as the owner years ago. He was always yelling and throwing the wieghts around.

Never made it to PF, nor did I even hear from my son. Time to pack up and head back to Ohio before the snow starts. We are expecting another foot by tomorrow morning. I wish I had a truck as I would be taking my snowblower back with me but I need it here in Erie more often.

Later today I will be training arms. I love to work arms. Need to have that passion for training legs after seeing those pics from Oldschool51.

Thanks browny.

I made it back to Ohio, just before the snow hit. It's coming down now. I envision a lot more shoveling later today.

My upper chest has been neglected because of some shoulder injuries. I was merely doing the motions and trying to get the feel of the exercise and how the pain is. I always do chest separately and will do it on Saturday.

I am all natural right now. Last thing I did was a PH last summer, Epistane and thinking about doing another 4 week cycle of the same.

Legs

Leg press pin 4 - equivalent to full squat
115x30 195x12 255x12 295x12 335x12 355x8 395x10

155x20 pin 1 - rock bottom

Leg curl
3 sets - 105x10

Lunges
3x21 - 3 different height positions - 21 reps each height

Had a good leg workout. Really felt the leg extensions and lunges. Hams are weakest part and I need to concentrate more on them. May do them separately on another day.

Shoveling snow for an hour and some HIIT early in the day.

nice work...

I emphasized hams today by doing the leg presses with one leg and putting my foot up high , then did SLDL and also bulgarian split squats. My hams will be on fire for a few days after the DOMS sets in tomorrow.

Thanks... I was going to do the SLDL but I knew I had a lot of shoveling to do, so I skipped that part. Maybe next arm day I will hit the hams if they're not sore.

Back

Rack Deads
135x12 225x8 315x5 405x5 425x5 - just above knee
315x8 225x12 - below knees

Lat Pulldowns - wide
150x12 165x10 165x10

Stiff arm cable pullins
130x12 140x10 150x10

Short and sweet. Rack deads felt good and I pulled more weight this week and it felt easier.

At the end of my workout some guy asked me for a spot on the bench. He had 300 on the bar and I asked, how many reps. He said, 1 or 2, with some forced reps. I said OK and was thinking WTF, I don't want to do upright rows with 300. So he asked for a lift off and I swear I must have did all of it. Then he proceeds to bench and goes 1/4 of the way down and starts back up, moving very slowly and just makes it. Then he tries for another, except this time it sinks all the way to his chest and I have to lift it off him. I get it to the top and rack it and he starts bitching that he wanted to do more.

I said Bro, you barely made the first one, and the second one I lifted off your chest, how the fuck did you think you're going to do forced reps, with me lifting it all, fuck that. He got pissed off. I told him to lighten the weight and go all the way to your chest. He said, that's not the way you're supposed to do it. I told him to use the power rack and I left. What a douche bag.

Mac

Mac
02-12-2010, 09:26 PM
Looking at him I thought he could make it. I wasn't up for the forced reps which he mentioned as I was about to help him lift it off. But I didn't really expect what happened, to lift almost all of it off.

So I am angry at myself.

Mac
02-12-2010, 09:37 PM
That much weight should require two spotters, one at each end.

Yeah... I wasn't thinking. There was nobody else there in the free weight area to spot him, so he picked me.

Maybe if I was big and strong like some of those bad asses that frequent here it would have never been a problem.

That's still too much weight for one person. It's such an awkward position. You were right to suggest the rack. Without a second person it's where he belonged.

Bob45
02-13-2010, 03:37 PM
People sure have nerve. I wouldn't think of having some stranger help me with forced reps and all reps like this guy did. You should be able to at least do enough of the the lift so a couple fingers would help if you couldn't lock it out. This person sounded like a rookie. I see a lot of people putting way more on the bar than they can handle. Then the spotter lifts most of it on every rep. It doesn't make sense.

Mac
02-13-2010, 03:41 PM
He must have been a rookie, but he didn't look like it. All I know is that in being the nice dumb ass that I was, I am a hurting today.

joedemarco
02-13-2010, 06:34 PM
I know I look like a jerk sometimes, but I always say "no" when someone ask me for a spot. Most of the times I tell them I'm in the middle of my workout and am on a specific amount of rest time between sets.

Years ago, I spotted some idiot with 315 on the bench. He was a big guy and I figured who could handle it no problem. He lowered the weight down, it got stuck on his chest. Before I could even do anything he leaned to one side, all the weights slid off, then the bar went the other way and the rest of the weights slid off...lol. Everyone in the gym was staring at us because of all the noise. That was the last straw for spotting strangers. To many idiots out there that don't know what they are doing.

Mac
02-13-2010, 06:44 PM

It's back to PA and trying to avoid the snow storms once again. I am hoping that I can make it back to OH tomorrow before we get another 4-6 inches of this white shit. At least my drive to PA will be in the sunshine, but that won't last long.

My right shoulder is still hurting this morning so there will be no lifting or cardio today. I probably should not have done arms yesterday. But being addicted to pain, I mean lifting is my curse.

Thank you Baldie, I feel humbled.

I took these pics in Aug - Nov of 2008. Most of them were with the camera built into my Mac or a Sony 5mega pixel camera that's about 6 yrs old.

I mostly use the lighting coming in from outside, thru the window. Some of them are stills from a video or multiple snap shots that the Mac will do in about 2 seconds.

Hell yeah we would! Can we talk you into doing the July 4th show? You know Erik? Did we talk about this already? Great guy! Thick. Spent 30 min at a show with me, in the lobby, helping me with my squat form! Class act! 700 lb squat, oh yeah great arms too! Eryk and I have never met in person. We tried to get together twice, once in LA and another time when he came to the East Coast with Laura.

July 4th might be doable. Is the show on that date?

July 4th is on a Sunday this year. So I would gather that yes. Unless they get weird and decide to hold it on Sat 9like most shows). But I think its always on the Holiday. Either way, it will be that weekend. Would be a LOT of fun!

I only had to mention the MB classic in Venice, CA to my girl and she was ecstatic. She always takes a vacation the week of the 4th, so maybe, this will be doable.

It may be time to do a clean bulk though April and purchase some extra supplements.

At the moment, this shoulder/trap injury is really pissing me off. I want to train chest/shoulders but I really shouldn't do any upper body or pulling with my right hand.

Yes, you're right, it does.

Lifting my cup of coffee to take a drink makes it f'n hurt. It is getting a little better and I won't let it stop me, only try to not aggravate it too much more. Now that it hasn't snowed for a day, that will help a lot.

How you doing Free?

Heh. I've had it so bad I couldn't raise my arm enough to put my hand in my pocket. Fortunately that hasn't happened in few years.

Doing good. My tendonitis has calmed down. Just sore from the new routine. Then again I have chest tonight. That aggravates it more than shoulder work.

I thought of you last night as I watched one of the bigger regulars at the gym spot a guy doing bench. This guy was trying about 300 pounds and I could tell the regular was having to help. A lot. The guy got two reps in. I later talked to the regular and he said he lifted about 100 pounds for the guy and told him that was it. He guessed, like you, that the guy knew what he was doing. We talked about how bad that could be for the spotter and how two people were really needed in case of failure. Another close call for a well meaning spotter.

independent one arm pulldowns at the same time.

somehow that is contradictory.

A lot of my workouts consist of doing one leg, one arm at a time.

It comes from a time when I had two dumbbells to workout with, John and Ron, wait, I mean a 35lb and 55lb DB.

So practically everything I did was a unilateral movement.

Still having issues with the trap/shoulder muscle. It's causing neck pain now and the only thing I know that will work is some good old endorphins from hard exercise. Sometimes I think I should take some ibuprofen, but I generally avoid it.

Today is Power Rack day. I was raised on one back in the 80s. We did everything in it, including curls, only because there was no room for anything else in our small room. Half the f'n workout was loading and unloading the plates.

My favorite is 1/2 squats in the PR, with the height of the bar set just above my navel. I start from the bottom position and push up and back, driving the bar into the rack. It's hard to get injured and you don't need a spotter. I am too old to walk back into a squatting position with 500lbs on my back. I only weigh 160lbs.

Time to review my log from 2008 and see what weights I was using. I remember having 7 plates on each side. I won't be doing anywhere close to that now.

I use several different stances and point my feet at different angles, trying to target the quads. Off to get some citrulline malate and beta alanine in me before I go. I am ready to push some heavy iron and raise my T levels.

After I was done, I thought, WTF, I am in the PR, how you going to spot me?

I love doing those bottom start squats too! first rep is usually a BIT%CH- see stars, but after that the next few are ok... 7 plates a side on wHAT? dont tell me squats?

I was doing partial squats with 675, bar was two inches below my chest. Started from the bottom and did an ego lift.

But it sure did pack on the muscle for me.

I got behind on the threads while in Columbus and the craziness of coming home to my new place ....just saw your new progress pics - they were awesome.
If you do the Cali July deal will you still be doing The Pittsburgh Masters?
I am still shooting to attend one of the shows - Cali is much closer - but Pittsburgh has more of an appeal since a lot of friends will be there.
Meeting you and Dar ... would be cool:)

Downside of my coach's gym....no power rack! WTF!

I almost didn't join the gym I am at because of the lack of a cable crossover machine. They told me it was in the back room and I was skeptical. Two weeks later we went back and still not there.

Finally, it was installed and indeed it was in the back room. We joined the gym.

The f'n cable on one side is now broke, it's been that way for over a week. Life just doesn't seem the same.

So glad to have a Power Rack. Tell your coach to buy one!

This afternoon was chest and shoulders. Gym was practically empty. I like that a lot compared to the 7pm rush hour with the young kids that come in at that time. There also isn't anyone to give me those funky looks when I hit some poses or flex the body part I am working on.

Going back later to help Dar with doing squats and do some abs/or calves again.

I was Dar's personal trainer today. She did chest and shoulders. I showed her how to use dumbbells in her training, as previously, it was all machines, those all-in-one things. She did great and I think she learned a little bit about intensity while training.

We had a drive-by shooting here in Ohio. Our house got hit 5 times. Fortunately they shot paint balls. Fucking juvenile kids, doing this shit in the middle of the day, and not just our house, but many many others. The police captured them shortly after taking our statement. Imagine this, someone got their license plate. Dumb fucks.

Mac, you won't regret aiming for the Masters Nationals. I think it's the best national NPC show for its locale, promotion (with the Teen & Collegiate Nationals), & the camaraderie of competitors. Promoter Gary Udit has done outstanding development (with thanks to the IFBB for approving the cards) of new pros at the masters level. We owe this show (& the Masters part of the North Americans) a great debt. They have raised the stakes & made new careers in the industry possible.

Mac
03-13-2010, 09:01 PM
Since I haven't competed in an NPC show in 25 years, I don't think I qualify for this show just yet. But it's the one I want to win and it's close to home.

The Muscle Beach isn't sanctioned by any organization. It would be a great show to be in and getting back to California would be cool.

That' correct. This is from Gary's website:

Bodybuilding competitors need only to have entered a previous NPC
contest, no matter what the year, no matter what the placing, no matter what the category - Teen, Novice, Collegiate, Masters, Open, etc.

I was an AAU competitor in the 80s because at 6' and ecto they had a 'Tall' class of 5'11" and over vs. the weight classes of the NPC. I tried the NPC just once...the Orange County. There were 25, yes 25, Over 40 men in my Heavy class and we were put on stage all at the same time. The judges called out by first name (they knew all the familiar regular NPC guys by name!!) the 10 they wanted to stay out on stage..."Thank you Gentlemen. If you were not called you can go home". Have a nice fucking day??? I was second from the left almost under the curtains...they never saw me. Back stage I had to be top 5 or better. So I continued my competition at the mercy of the crooked AAU. Pitt will be different....only one class in the O70s and what, 3-5 men at best?

I had a split session today. About an hour apart, each lasting about no more than 30 minutes. It just worked out that way, as I had to leave the gym for a bit. Interesting concept, as I recovered well in that hour.

Blasted away at 24 sets. 5 sets of incline db flys, with 3 reps @ 80lb. Missed the 4th one. The pair of the 80lb DB weigh as much as me. That's like you big chits guys using the 110-120lb DBs. Sucks being small.

One of my staple supplements has been ZMA. However, I recently determined the brand I was buying was too over priced and that getting zinc and magnesium separately would be much more economical.

I always took ZMA at night. This morning I took the magnesium and zinc with my breakfast. Within a half hour I could not keep my eyes open and was fast asleep. This was after having two cups of coffee. I never realized just how much magnesium caused sleepiness, but damn, it hit me like a ton of bricks.

Dar and I go to a local bar, once a week, if that. We became friends with a couple that were always outgoing and a lot of fun. We hadn't been around in several weeks and last night we noticed the woman was there without her man. That was the first time we ever saw her alone.

We asked the barmaid, where's her better half, only to find out he committed suicide the night we last saw him. We were fucking shocked. No one knows why he did it. There were no outward signs of him being unhappy.

It's just a shame that he had to go and do that. I really feel sorry for his wife. I am still in shock over it.
