I don't think there will be any training today, unless I go with my son to Planet Fitness. I have heard some stories about this place, so it will be interesting to check out. I better not drop the 100lb dumbbells, oh wait, they don't have any to drop.
It's back to Erie to check up on the house and get my things in order there and hurry back to OH before the next fucking winter storm comes in. They're calling for another 4-8" on top of the two feet we just got.
I was a PF member for a while. They did have some strange rules and things going on. Pizza on Tuesdays. There was a bowl of tootsie rolls out all the time. You can't do overhead presses. You have to be seated. Yup, no db's higher than 80's. No dropping anything loud. No yelling. They have an alarm if a rule is broken. No cages. You have to spray and wipe everything right after you use it.
I think i will stay home from PF. Gees, that doesn't sound much like a gym.

The funny thing about the one I used to go to is I used to lift in the same gym as the owner years ago. He was always yelling and throwing the wieghts around.
Never made it to PF, nor did I even hear from my son. Time to pack up and head back to Ohio before the snow starts. We are expecting another foot by tomorrow morning. I wish I had a truck as I would be taking my snowblower back with me but I need it here in Erie more often.
Later today I will be training arms. I love to work arms. Need to have that passion for training legs after seeing those pics from Oldschool51.

good work mac
Thanks browny.
I made it back to Ohio, just before the snow hit. It's coming down now. I envision a lot more shoveling later today.

Yes, my GF can only go at night and I can never get in my entire workout done when I go with her, so I split it up.

Looks like we are close in strength, however you got me beat in bicep strength, great numbers. Why do you preexhaust arms before chest? Do you do chest emphasis day?

My upper chest has been neglected because of some shoulder injuries. I was merely doing the motions and trying to get the feel of the exercise and how the pain is. I always do chest separately and will do it on Saturday.

gotcha! I like to do some close grip incline with shoulders sometimes to hit front delts and upper pec.

Am I on what?
I am all natural right now. Last thing I did was a PH last summer, Epistane and thinking about doing another 4 week cycle of the same.

Had a good leg workout. Really felt the leg extensions and lunges. Hams are weakest part and I need to concentrate more on them. May do them separately on another day.
Shoveling snow for an hour and some HIIT early in the day.
nice work...
I emphasized hams today by doing the leg presses with one leg and putting my foot up high , then did SLDL and also bulgarian split squats. My hams will be on fire for a few days after the DOMS sets in tomorrow.
nice work...
Thanks... I was going to do the SLDL but I knew I had a lot of shoveling to do, so I skipped that part. Maybe next arm day I will hit the hams if they're not sore.
Shoveling sounds like it would do some damage to the hammies...I wouldn't know :p

Rack Deads
135x12 225x8 315x5 405x5 425x5 - just above knee
315x8 225x12 - below knees
Lat Pulldowns - wide
150x12 165x10 165x10
Stiff arm cable pullins
130x12 140x10 150x10
Short and sweet. Rack deads felt good and I pulled more weight this week and it felt easier.
At the end of my workout some guy asked me for a spot on the bench. He had 300 on the bar and I asked, how many reps. He said, 1 or 2, with some forced reps. I said OK and was thinking WTF, I don't want to do upright rows with 300. So he asked for a lift off and I swear I must have did all of it. Then he proceeds to bench and goes 1/4 of the way down and starts back up, moving very slowly and just makes it. Then he tries for another, except this time it sinks all the way to his chest and I have to lift it off him. I get it to the top and rack it and he starts bitching that he wanted to do more.
I said Bro, you barely made the first one, and the second one I lifted off your chest, how the fuck did you think you're going to do forced reps, with me lifting it all, fuck that. He got pissed off. I told him to lighten the weight and go all the way to your chest. He said, that's not the way you're supposed to do it. I told him to use the power rack and I left. What a douche bag.
Fuck, now my shoulder and right trap muscle is killing me from pulling that 300lbs off that dumb fuck on the bench press. Sonnofabitch!!

Who are you more angry at? Him for trying to lift too much weight or yourself for agreeing to do what you knew would probably turn into you lifting all of the weight?

At that moment I was more stupid than he.
Looking at him I thought he could make it. I wasn't up for the forced reps which he mentioned as I was about to help him lift it off. But I didn't really expect what happened, to lift almost all of it off.
So I am angry at myself.

That much weight should require two spotters, one at each end.

Yeah... I wasn't thinking. There was nobody else there in the free weight area to spot him, so he picked me.
Maybe if I was big and strong like some of those bad asses that frequent here it would have never been a problem.

That's still too much weight for one person. It's such an awkward position. You were right to suggest the rack. Without a second person it's where he belonged.

People sure have nerve. I wouldn't think of having some stranger help me with forced reps and all reps like this guy did. You should be able to at least do enough of the the lift so a couple fingers would help if you couldn't lock it out. This person sounded like a rookie. I see a lot of people putting way more on the bar than they can handle. Then the spotter lifts most of it on every rep. It doesn't make sense.
He must have been a rookie, but he didn't look like it. All I know is that in being the nice dumb ass that I was, I am a hurting today.

I know I look like a jerk sometimes, but I always say "no" when someone ask me for a spot. Most of the times I tell them I'm in the middle of my workout and am on a specific amount of rest time between sets.
Years ago, I spotted some idiot with 315 on the bench. He was a big guy and I figured who could handle it no problem. He lowered the weight down, it got stuck on his chest. Before I could even do anything he leaned to one side, all the weights slid off, then the bar went the other way and the rest of the weights slid off...lol. Everyone in the gym was staring at us because of all the noise. That was the last straw for spotting strangers. To many idiots out there that don't know what they are doing.
Good advice Joe.
That's what I am going to do from now on, unless it's a friend, but since I don't know anyone in this town that's not a concern yet.

It's back to PA and trying to avoid the snow storms once again. I am hoping that I can make it back to OH tomorrow before we get another 4-6 inches of this white shit. At least my drive to PA will be in the sunshine, but that won't last long.
My right shoulder is still hurting this morning so there will be no lifting or cardio today. I probably should not have done arms yesterday. But being addicted to pain, I mean lifting is my curse.

Could you order some warmer weather for The Arnold ...I am starting to freeze already and I'm not there.
I am addicted to pain too ...my body was already hurting from packing and I still worked out late last night and hit cardio at 4:30 am - we are a odd breed of people:)
it's not being addicted to pain, it's vanity...come on, admit it! lol

I will admit to nothing.
It's both vanity and addiction.
I am back in PA and there was two feet of snow in the driveway. Thankfully I have a snowblower here.
We are on the east side of the low this time...meaning southeast wind, rain and temp near 50.

Mac you have the best damn set of pics I have seen in here. When were they taken and by whom? The lighting was also perfect.
Baldie
Thank you Baldie, I feel humbled.
I took these pics in Aug - Nov of 2008. Most of them were with the camera built into my Mac or a Sony 5mega pixel camera that's about 6 yrs old.
I mostly use the lighting coming in from outside, thru the window. Some of them are stills from a video or multiple snap shots that the Mac will do in about 2 seconds.

My guess it both! You try to give some moron like that the benefit of the doubt and not get preachy. However, mac is the one paying for it. I just don't spot people that I don't know or I haven't seen lifting some. I know just how you feel, bro. Getting ready for a show...screw that.

Hell yeah we would! Can we talk you into doing the July 4th show? You know Erik? Did we talk about this already? Great guy! Thick. Spent 30 min at a show with me, in the lobby, helping me with my squat form! Class act! 700 lb squat, oh yeah great arms too! Lonnie Teper dotes on him, Erik has come to his PE classes several times.
Eryk and I have never met in person. We tried to get together twice, once in LA and another time when he came to the East Coast with Laura.
We have spoken on the phone many times and in fact his last message was ' we need to get on the phone and chat '
July 4th might be doable. Is the show on that date?

July 4th is on a Sunday this year. So I would gather that yes. Unless they get weird and decide to hold it on Sat 9like most shows). But I think its always on the Holiday. Either way, it will be that weekend. Would be a LOT of fun!
I only had to mention the MB classic in Venice, CA to my girl and she was ecstatic. She always takes a vacation the week of the 4th, so maybe, this will be doable.
It may be time to do a clean bulk though April and purchase some extra supplements.
At the moment, this shoulder/trap injury is really pissing me off. I want to train chest/shoulders but I really shouldn't do any upper body or pulling with my right hand.

Yes, you're right, it does.
Lifting my cup of coffee to take a drink makes it f'n hurt. It is getting a little better and I won't let it stop me, only try to not aggravate it too much more. Now that it hasn't snowed for a day, that will help a lot.

Heh. I've had it so bad I couldn't raise my arm enough to put my hand in my pocket. Fortunately that hasn't happened in few years.
Doing good. My tendonitis has calmed down. Just sore from the new routine. Then again I have chest tonight. That aggravates it more than shoulder work.
Hope you get to go to Muscle Beach, that's a future trip for me! Gotta see Baldie in Pittsburgh this summer.

While doing this I did not feel any pain in my right shoulder but I am starting to get some cramping in my trap muscle going up thru my neck. Had a good pump and felt strong in cable crossover. Stayed light on the hammer strength presses.
I get that too! Trap cramping during chest. Mainly after cable flyes. I just thought I was weird.
Looks like I am just as weird as you.

I thought of you last night as I watched one of the bigger regulars at the gym spot a guy doing bench. This guy was trying about 300 pounds and I could tell the regular was having to help. A lot. The guy got two reps in. I later talked to the regular and he said he lifted about 100 pounds for the guy and told him that was it. He guessed, like you, that the guy knew what he was doing. We talked about how bad that could be for the spotter and how two people were really needed in case of failure. Another close call for a well meaning spotter.

sit facing the mirror at the cable crossover and do both cables at one time...independent one arm pulldowns at the same time.
independent one arm pulldowns at the same time.
somehow that is contradictory.
A lot of my workouts consist of doing one leg, one arm at a time.
It comes from a time when I had two dumbbells to workout with, John and Ron, wait, I mean a 35lb and 55lb DB.
So practically everything I did was a unilateral movement.

Hey sister. Almost back to 100%
I am anxious to get back to the gym today, as we took off yesterday to rest and recover. So my girl is going to work upper body and I am going to do legs. Were going to increase her weights on the unilateral chest machines tonight.
Still having issues with the trap/shoulder muscle. It's causing neck pain now and the only thing I know that will work is some good old endorphins from hard exercise. Sometimes I think I should take some ibuprofen, but I generally avoid it.
Time to eat, so we're off to TGIF on Wednesday.

Arms were on the schedule for tonight. Supersets of biceps and triceps. Good pump.
Today is Power Rack day. I was raised on one back in the 80s. We did everything in it, including curls, only because there was no room for anything else in our small room. Half the f'n workout was loading and unloading the plates.
My favorite is 1/2 squats in the PR, with the height of the bar set just above my navel. I start from the bottom position and push up and back, driving the bar into the rack. It's hard to get injured and you don't need a spotter. I am too old to walk back into a squatting position with 500lbs on my back. I only weigh 160lbs.
Time to review my log from 2008 and see what weights I was using. I remember having 7 plates on each side. I won't be doing anywhere close to that now.
I use several different stances and point my feet at different angles, trying to target the quads. Off to get some citrulline malate and beta alanine in me before I go. I am ready to push some heavy iron and raise my T levels.

I had a great leg training session. While I was in the PowerRack, some big ass dude approaches me just as I am about to start and asks if I need a spot. I just ignored him, as I was in the fuckin zone. Then I blasted out 7 reps with 405 at 3/4 depth. Not too bad when 5 my goal.
After I was done, I thought, WTF, I am in the PR, how you going to spot me?
He gave me the thumbs up when I crawled from under the bar.

Downside of my coach's gym....no power rack! WTF!
I almost didn't join the gym I am at because of the lack of a cable crossover machine. They told me it was in the back room and I was skeptical. Two weeks later we went back and still not there.
Finally, it was installed and indeed it was in the back room. We joined the gym.
The f'n cable on one side is now broke, it's been that way for over a week. Life just doesn't seem the same.
So glad to have a Power Rack. Tell your coach to buy one!
He's 53 and the gym has been there 20+ years, don't think I will be the deciding vote somehow! lol
Pros and cons. Life is full of them. Ask him why he doesn't have one?
definitely will do that. I have never belonged to a gym with a power rack!
This afternoon was chest and shoulders. Gym was practically empty. I like that a lot compared to the 7pm rush hour with the young kids that come in at that time. There also isn't anyone to give me those funky looks when I hit some poses or flex the body part I am working on.
Going back later to help Dar with doing squats and do some abs/or calves again.
Today was hi rep bicep and triceps. I had a huge pump and have never seen my arms so big. It was a great workout. You know you're doing something right when people stare at you. Or maybe they think I am just a complete idiot.

Hmmm. Wonder which one it was :D
maybe both... but more likely the former!
I too think it's a little of both. Even Dar said my arms look bigger tonight. That's the stuff I like to hear. It's just one of the many reasons I love her so much and she loves big arms.
I was Dar's personal trainer today. She did chest and shoulders. I showed her how to use dumbbells in her training, as previously, it was all machines, those all-in-one things. She did great and I think she learned a little bit about intensity while training.
We had a drive-by shooting here in Ohio. Our house got hit 5 times. Fortunately they shot paint balls. Fucking juvenile kids, doing this shit in the middle of the day, and not just our house, but many many others. The police captured them shortly after taking our statement. Imagine this, someone got their license plate. Dumb fucks.
I have the day off, from training. May go back later and do some  cardio.

Mac, you won't regret aiming for the Masters Nationals. I think it's the best national NPC show for its locale, promotion (with the Teen & Collegiate Nationals), & the camaraderie of competitors. Promoter Gary Udit has done outstanding development (with thanks to the IFBB for approving the cards) of new pros at the masters level. We owe this show (& the Masters part of the North Americans) a great debt. They have raised the stakes & made new careers in the industry possible.
Since I haven't competed in an NPC show in 25 years, I don't think I qualify for this show just yet. But it's the one I want to win and it's close to home.
The Muscle Beach isn't sanctioned by any organization. It would be a great show to be in and getting back to California would be cool.

I was an AAU competitor in the 80s because at 6' and ecto they had a 'Tall' class of 5'11" and over vs. the weight classes of the NPC. I tried the NPC just once...the Orange County. There were 25, yes 25, Over 40 men in my Heavy class and we were put on stage all at the same time. The judges called out by first name (they knew all the familiar regular NPC guys by name!!) the 10 they wanted to stay out on stage..."Thank you Gentlemen. If you were not called you can go home". Have a nice fucking day??? I was second from the left almost under the curtains...they never saw me. Back stage I had to be top 5 or better. So I continued my competition at the mercy of the crooked AAU. Pitt will be different....only one class in the O70s and what, 3-5 men at best?

Someone said it's good to get in the gym and out quickly. I succeeded.

Mac I am always lean, one of my fucking draw backs. When ever I stop training, I lose weight, unlike most folks who gain weight.

What's that sound, riiiiipppp... why damn son, that's my skin ripping apart. Time to break out the cocoa butter to hinder the spread of these stretch marks.
I am so fucking excited because it means I am getting bigger, right?

July 24th
kool. I wil call Bill to get the details
I had a split session today. About an hour apart, each lasting about no more than 30 minutes. It just worked out that way, as I had to leave the gym for a bit. Interesting concept, as I recovered well in that hour.
Blasted away at 24 sets. 5 sets of incline db flys, with 3 reps @ 80lb. Missed the 4th one. The pair of the 80lb DB weigh as much as me. That's like you big chits guys using the 110-120lb DBs. Sucks being small.
I was fucking pumped, again. Felt strong, no shoulder pains. See how I feel tomorrow.

Thanks Drex for the flowers.
Ax would be our brother in iron, Axioma. He's got a thread here and he is the man to watch this year at the Masters. I am sure you seen it.
here is Axioma's journal.
you have come a long way since the spotting incident, Mac.
it wasn't that long ago as I recall

Holy shit, bro! Man, I take it for granted sometimes, living out in the woods, I forget about those of you who deal with this stuff. Man, that really tears me up.
On a positive note, really like hearing about you and Dar working out, great isn't it?

Thankfully, they were just paintballs Ax.
It's great working out together and sharing many of the same goals. She is behind me 1000% with BB and she is urging me to get on stage in Venice Beach in July.

I am planing on competing this year towards the end, but it all depends on how well my pelvis put up and how well I can regain my muscle mass
Today was triceps and forearms. Went for volume and higher reps. A good workout with maybe 3 people in the entire gym.
Yesterday as we were walking out of the gym, some lady was coming in to workout and she brought her dog. Unbelievable. I love dogs, but that's a bit too much.

Dar came home for lunch so I was off celebrating some other color. Now I'm off to the gym when all I feel like doing is sleep.
Today was supposed to be leg day but due to a small pain in my left hip area, I am delaying that another day.
I did shoulders and had a great workout. One of those where you are happy with what you see in the mirror kinds of workouts. Shoulders the size of boulders.
I must do a Baldie now. :zzzz:

Thanks for thinking of me Baldie.
One of my staple supplements has been ZMA. However, I recently determined the brand I was buying was too over priced and that getting zinc and magnesium separately would be much more economical.
I always took ZMA at night. This morning I took the magnesium and zinc with my breakfast. Within a half hour I could not keep my eyes open and was fast asleep. This was after having two cups of coffee. I never realized just how much magnesium caused sleepiness, but damn, it hit me like a ton of bricks.
Today was leg day. I did Power Rack squats and got 455x3 and a new PR in Leg extensions, the stack [255] x 8. Tweaked my left hammie doing a neg to the pins with the 455, so I stopped.
Good workout. I am going back later with Dar to coach her doing legs. I might do some lunges as I cut those out today. Trying to see if minimal volume with max intensity works for me.

You're thinking I am a 20 yr. old gay man, aren't you? Want me to put on my daisy dukes?
But that's me brother, except I will be 54 and not gay.

Chest today.
I felt really good going in and felt like a steam roller had gone over me when I was done. Increased the weight on the unilateral decline chest and added a couple reps to my previous week. Cable crossovers were tough as I felt a pull in my left arm.
Dar worked her back and shoulders. I introduced her to DB Rows and Lo pulley rows. She really works out hard.
No big pump today... maybe another day.
Life is really fucked up sometimes.
Dar and I go to a local bar, once a week, if that. We became friends with a couple that were always outgoing and a lot of fun. We hadn't been around in several weeks and last night we noticed the woman was there without her man. That was the first time we ever saw her alone.
We asked the barmaid, where's her better half, only to find out he committed suicide the night we last saw him. We were fucking shocked. No one knows why he did it. There were no outward signs of him being unhappy.
It's just a shame that he had to go and do that. I really feel sorry for his wife. I am still in shock over it.

At first, it seemed to be a really good idea as I was hoping to work with Eryk Bui a couple days before the show. But he is going to be running the show this year which leaves me with nobody to help with contest prep. Also, I don't want my first real vacation with Dar to be a bodybuilding show. It would be fun to attend, which we may still do as we ARE coming to California the 4th of July. We just haven't figured out where just yet.
Pittsburgh is just right down the road too.

If this is Dars first trip to California you MUST go to Hearst Castle in Central Ca. and while there 10 feet in front of you on the beach you will see the worlds largest herd of Elephant Seals. I lived on the water in Central California (Pismo Beach) for one year and will take those amazing sites imbedded in my mind to my grave....awsome. Redwood trees, seals, whales, birds galore, and Otters.
Baldie
Damn, I knew you could walk on water, but to have lived on water, wow.
This will be my 4th time to Cali and Dar's second. She went for business and didn't have the liberty to be in vacation mode.
Thanks for the info Bill.
