Hello to all the RX Masters.

I am hoping that this year will be the year I return to the bodybuilding stage. I last competed as a lightweight in 1986 and a year later started a family and there went my BB lifestyle.

In 2006, I returned to working out and at age 53, I am still a lightweight.

A little over a year ago I decided to see if I could still get in shape to compete. I was able to get ripped to the bone, but lost a lot of size. Hopefully I can correct that this time around.

Shown below is my condition a little over a year ago and my progress since 2006. I never took any pics in 2009.

Damn dude, awesome.

What were your stats in the avatar...height, weight, chest, waist, etc?

Just curious, because I think that's very similar to what I will look like without the fat.

Thanks for the comments.

I am a tad under 5' 6 and about 165 lbs now. I was 148 at my peak condition in the photo from 2008. I never used the tape measure so I couldn't tell you my chest and waist measurements.

One of my first goals is to get these abs back. I know they are just hiding under this adipose tissue somewhere.

Off to do 20 minutes of cardio on the stationary bike.

How often do you work abs, and what exercises do you do for them?

Damn that felt good. 22 minutes on stat bike with some HIIT. It said 7.3 miles, 340 cals but i know it wasn't anywhere near that. I am used to a treadmill, but I have this now at home. I forgot how great the spine chilling sensations I get from doing this.

Impressive.

Not much off season. 3 times a week was what I was doing with a lot of twists, incline situps and HEAVY rope crunches when I took these pics.

Once I started using some real weight and lower reps, they became much more visible. But I also did sets of 100s with a lighter weight too. Go figure.

Mac

I hope you're kidding! If you actually enjoy HIIT, you are a sick man:hypno:

About every 3-4 minutes I would go as fast as I can for about 90 seconds. I hit 32mph on the statbike.

I love the feeling. It has to be an adrenalin rush I feel with the chills starting at the base of my neck, I feel it shoot down my spine and down my legs and back up again. I told my girl it's almost as good as an orgasm.

I never get it from plain walking. Once in a while I get it doing squats and deads but it's like a fucking drug.

Speaking of which, it's time to have a banana, a whey shake along with some beta alanine, citrulline mallate and off to work my legs.

I am moving up to welterweight (165lbs) this year. I would never make lightweight (154lbs) at this point. I'm up to 185 and feeling great and staying lean at this weight.

Best of luck whatever show you decide to do!

Legs was around noon about an hour after the stationary bike. I never skipped cardio before on leg day, so not going to start now.

It's the only way I can get conditioned. Just did another [slow] 10 minutes on the bike to flush the lactic acid buildup.

The GF wants me to watch American Idol and she thinks I am nuts.

Back at my other home now in PA.

Need to check out the revamped Y just down the street. It will be first time I have been there since I was 20 yrs. old. This should be fun!

My other membership expired in December and I really miss that gym. Business was soooooooo bad I started cutting costs. I may go back and sign up again but its like $60 a month. The family Y membership is $70 and I thought that was a but much just for gym memberships.

No argument from me on that one. It is a mental challenge every leg day and it's probably the one workout that I am never satisfied when I'm finished. I always feel like I should have done more...one more rep, one more set, etc....I drive myself crazy with that type of s--t....lol.

Yep, a nice breezy day. Might get some rays later.

Packing up the 'puter and leaving for OH. Hitting the big old "YMCA" shortly after arriving. There are so many youngsters that come in around 2:00pm.

I have had more comments from these kids than anywhere. They ask me, how old are you, how long have you been lifting, how did you get so jacked.

It almost makes up for having to endure lifting in this small sweatbox of a gym, but it's right down the road.

Mac, what's the are workout look like today??? I am training arms today as well.

I like to start on the cable machine. Biceps from the bottom and triceps from the top. I do a lot of one arm cable and DB routines.

My favorite is one-arm tricep rope extensions with a full ROM. I go up to about 90 lbs for 8 reps. I superset the one-arm curls and rope extensions.

I then do seated one-arm bicep curls, without the full ROM, keeping constant TUT [time-under-tension] for maximum pump.

Then one-arm DB lying tricep extensions, some Zotts, cybex arm curls, lots of forearm work. Trying to work up to 75lb DB wrist curls for 10 reps.

So i joined a new gym, and not 5 minutes into my workout some young kid comes up and asks me, how did you get such big triceps!!! WTF, the is one of the reasons I left the Y.

However, i was glad to show him since I was doing arms. IT is much better than the Y, but they only have DBs up to 100lbs. Oh, well. So much for the 150lb DB one-arm rows.

Motrin works better for me than Advil. Also, BenGay pain patches help. It's just menthol but darned if they don't take the edge off.

I am suffering from a fucking rotator cuff injury. Didn't feel it to later in the evening. Makes for difficult sleeping.

I am trying to figure out just when I did it.

Yo that shit sucks ass, shoulder injuries fuck up almost all upper body workouts!

I hate those rotator cuff pains! I used to get them a lot. I always got them benching. I always loved the BP. Problem is I always tried more than I could really handle or didn't acclimate up slow enough. Good luck with it.

John seems like a great guy from what little i know of him. I need to have him give me some insight on his street fighting techniques, just for protection that is.

After standing nose to nose with my GF's ex, who is 6 ft + 275lbs, i realize i could have been pummeled to pieces. I know I could out run him. LOL and I don't carry my nun-chucks with me.

Just remember the bigger they are the harder they fall, lol. My father grew up in the same city as John. He always taught me to fight. I get along with everyone and never fought much. One tip he gave when the guy is taller is hit him hard dead center just under the pecs. When he drops down from getting the wind knocked out of him his head will drop and you can give him another shot to the nose. I always pictured that, lol. Then you can run!

Mac
01-21-2010, 08:17 AM
I don't know how effective it would be to him under the pecs. His stomach is so large it I cannot tell where his pecs end and stomach begins.

He reminds me of that cartoon character foghorn leghorn, the chicken. Big upper body and skinny legs.

I told him with fucking legs like that you should REALLY not wear shorts. I was ready to run at that point.

All those years on the speed bag has given me really quick hands and reflexes. But I am not a fighter and was only ever in one in my entire adult life and that was because someone tried to hit me first.

You can get far mentally and scare most people. Especially with a build like yours. I had a kid on my block three years older than me that always made going out to do anything miserable. Big bully type. He was a big kid too. One day I finally just fought him. He got on top of me somehow. Too heavy to get him off. I had a hand free and yanked a handful of his hair out. He never bothered me again.

I know in my area a punching match would mean a visit to the police, jail, courts. You don't even want to make threats. No bullying is the main theme in the schools. It still seems to be okay for the teachers to bully the kids.

MAC, in all honesty and without all the bullshit and people stating "the bigger they are the harder they fall". fighting comes from the within, from th heart, you are either good at it or you are not. The fight or flight is instilled in all of us. You take an average fighter and you give him the best trainer, you will always get and average fighter. Better than what he was before you trained him, but still just an average fighter. You take a good fighter and you give him that same trainer you will have an excellent fighter in your hands.

Fighting in sports is nowhere as difficult as street fighting, there are rules in sports and size and weight comes into play, not in the streets.

Because of this, you NEVER, EVER underestimate the person you are fighting, small, fat, skinny, tall, muscular etc, it doesn't matter. It is IN the person you are fighting and if it is IN him you are in for a fucking terrible time.

I wont get in to all of my fights, but I will tell you of one that happen AFTER my surgery not so long ago. I told this to Heavy D and his wife when we were in Pitts.

In short the guy was taller than me by at least 6" and outweigh me by 40lbs. He hurt the guy I was with, actually broke his arm. I tried to stop the fight and he want after me, it took all but two hits and I laid him flat on his ass, his own boys said to me, Fuck you got a hell of a punch there, while they picked his ass up off the floor.

All I am saying is It's not the size of the man in the fight, but the size of the fight in the man

Mac

Have you tried changing the way you bench to eliminate the pain on your shoulder?

Maybe try bringing in the arms closer to the body and the elbows pointing more so to the legs rather than flaring out. (more triceps I know but at least you might reduce the shoulder discomfort/pain)

Do DB hurt at all?

Mac
01-22-2010, 12:50 PM
DBs are worse if the angle is 90 degrees from the body. I can turn them more parallel to my body, like how you suggested for bench and it's tolerable.

I also have a mental block with flat benches because I really fucked up the right shoulder when benching my best ever touch and go at 405lbs. Had two spotters, big mistake. One grabbed the bar and the other didn't. That happened after I made the lift.

Index fingers on the mark on the O-bar. It worked well. I grinded those reps out and what a pump.

I am not about strength anymore. While lifting makes you strong, it's not a goal of mine like it used to be.

You know you can also eliminate the pain by not going full ROM, no lock out at the top and not going any lower than needed. Keep the chest in constant TUT.

Mac
01-23-2010, 01:04 PM
yes, I don't lockout, that's where it gets painful.

However, I do a lot of my training with the TUT concept and explosive training. Eryk Bui taught me to use it and it has helped me break new ground in my shoulders.

I employ a drop and catch technique when doing tri and bicep training. Talk about a burn and pump.

You might want to try the Power Rack. I loathe walking out from the rack with a heavy weight. When I do PRs, I start my squats from the bottom with the weight resting on the pins. I push backwards into the rack and it's much like doing squats in a smith machine for stability.

I like to alternate between PR and ATG squats each week.

They are curls that I did (still do em) back in the days and the manager jokingly called them Johnny curls cause everyone in the gym started doing them! hence my name is John :D

Why not? It wasn't a max lift. It's called pyramids. mine just has one very steep side.

Was working on form while those muscles were fatigued.

I have to confess Mike that when you have me do front db raises together about 50% of the time I do them alternate for the last sets because I can lift a heavier weight that way - I'm sure form suffers a little.

Baldiewonkanobi

To compete in the NPC Masters Nationals all you need to qualify is to have done one only NPC show in your past life. The winners from last July are all up on the web and you can get an idea where you line up weight/age wise. Many natural men place very high in the lower weight catergories. I consider this the ultimate place to display your physique.

Baldie

Mac

I was in 4 NPC shows. The first one was in Pittsburgh, it was the Mr. PA. 1985 I came in 9th out of 25. No weight class. What a shocker that was.

It would definitely be in the lightweight class. I always came in under 150 when at my best conditioning. My offseason weight is ~ 160 - 165

I wil be competing against those who are not natural and I haven't decided if I will once again use something to help recovery.

Dave Goodin is the person who inspired me to return to BB lifestyle after seeing what he has done naturally. I said I want to look like that, at least in the body, can't do much about the face and the hair, and the... oh fuck forget it.

Mac, go on the NPC website. www.npcnewsonline.com (http://www.npcnewsonline.com). They list what you need to do to qualify for all the different national shows. I'm not exactly sure what is required for masters nationals. I thought you had to compete in an NPC show within the past two years but I could be wrong.

You will do very well in the lighter weight classes. There is far less drug use in those classes. I am a lifetime natural and did well there as a lightweight.
