been rolling this one around...haha pun intended.

lifting an atlas stone can be broke down into 4 elements: pull, lap, clean, and pop.

the pull is form the floor, like a deadlift.
the lap is when you get it to your lap, duh i know, and then adjust your hands for the next step...
the clean, bringing the stone up to your chest or higher.
last part is the pop...the push you need to get it on the platform.

i will get into more detail hopefully with pics....

the bottom

think of doing a sumo deadlift
start with the feet halfway over the stone

the lap

here is where you want to change your hand position
get them a little more to the top

the clean and pop

almost one move but you have to get it high. get up on the toes. then bump it on the platform. higher platforms will require shouldering the stone.

Have you used the fiberglass forms for making atlas stones?

yeah if you train with chalk only them tacky in comps will make a world of difference! My problem is that I don't get to train with stones often, so when I do, I need to go all out and bust out some Tacky!

nothing wrong using tacky in training

stones are an event that will come and go. they are the most brutal.
i always tell new guys you have to do them with anger.

I hate lapping a stone, after that phase it feels like a feather. Idk maybe it' just me and my weak ass hands.

How about pinch lifts?

for stones?

as long as it is open hand pinch....hub or blob lifting

forearem work too. helps with the squeeze. and the ability to pull the stone in tight to your body.

You will save more time and enery expenditure if you can eliminate the "lap" and one motion the stone to the platform. Like any other movement, it takes practice.

that it does. the lighter stones especially. saves time.

what about the size? does anyone have trouble when the stone gets bigger? i dont mean heavier. i mean circumfrence.

I was trying to figure out how I could make a 24" stone weigh 200-250 for that reason. The problem is that with an insert big enough to reduce the weight that much, the outer "shell" becomes too thin and the chance for damage raises A LOT.

If it were possible... I imagine some speed work with that sucker over a bar would be greatly beneficial. Almost like a Louie Simmons DE day. 10 sets of FAST doubles! That would get you used to movin that thing QUICK.

you could do it....with a lot of styrofoam.

i try to do at least a set of 5 with the heavy stone.

what weight do you want it?

was thinking you could do the plaster/rubber ball mold. you can adjust the dimension of the ball to make a lighter but larger stone. weight is also dependent on the type of concrete mix you use.
