Who did you like best? Who influenced you as a child or young person to be fit and lift weights?

I love Dave Palumbo, I vaguely remember him being on a couple of TV shows when I was 8 or so. Plus he is a great writer and a good all around guy.

I remember Arnold a lot more of course, and I actually worked out a few times at a Nautilus fitness center (remember those?) with my buddy when Pumping Iron came out. I like Franco more though because he was more my size!

Wow that's a tough question. I think Arnold had the most impact on me but I also loved Robbie Robinson and Franco. Tom Platz was unreal. I dreamed of having those legs.

I totally agree. Fourty years ago and look at him next to Dexter. I also think Casey Viator was a great bodybuilder that gets overlooked.

Sergio had, arguably, the best genetics of any bodybuilder, ever. Be crazy to think how big he could have gotten with the drug protocols today, while keeping his lines of course ;).

Pre 75? Arnold in73 to 74 was the best. Sergio in 71-72 was the freakiest and biggest arms. Viator in71 dominated the amateurs. Scott 65-66 was magic. Reeves in 50- his most massive. Reg Park anytime. Bill Pearl after 1964. Lou Ferrigno in 73-74 was awesome.

does anyone remember or has anyone met this guy from the 1970's, I believe his name is Pat Neve. He is a small ripped guy. I have fantasies of getting in this kind of condition! He was 5'6" 185lbs

I remember him mostly from Lurie's magazines, but see that he was also an AAU and NPC competitor.

Found this guy on a classic bodybuilder website, my new apsiration. 5'9" 185 lbs, this is what I want to look like (I can always dream!). Guess his name if you can. He won the middleweight NPC in 1980:

An interesting thing with all the lies on the net and muscle mags is Richard Baldwin had his arms measured publicly in contest shape and cold back in the day....they were 17 3/4. Kind of shows you how much people lie about measurements.

Here he is at 60 in 2007.

His arms are incredible even now! You are right about the arm measurement thing. I think people with 19" may have a bodyfat issue in many cases, to put it politely.

Great pic! Richard is an inspiration to how I want to look when I'm 60. He posts over at Iron Age frequently. As to the 19", if were talking cold, not pumped measurements, only Sergio, Ronnie and maybe Jay, had over 20" cold. 18 is big, 19 is huge, and 20 almost defies belief.

I was a senior in highschool in 1977 and needed something constructive to do in life. While thumbing through some books in a bookstore I looked up and there was Ed Corney on the front of Pumping Iron.I`ve been lifting ever since.

I'll do a YouTube video at the end of June when I begin my diet, with someone measuring my arms cold, first thing in the morning. They're over 20" and I hope will be a little bigger when I do the vid. Of course, I'm 6'-4", so I should have bigger arms than men between 5'-8" and 6'-0".

Then I'll do the same about 2 weeks out from the show, to see how much size they've retained. Last year, they were 19 1/2" at showtime.

When I was a kid, my first weight lifting book that I followed had pictures of Clarence Ross. I don't know when he competed or what he ever won. But, he was my first inspiration.

You're so right about height being a factor, so is bone structure, the size of surrounding body parts, and even the size of your head. Sergio's right arm at 20 3/8 cold was actually taller than his head back in 71 when Jones measured it. (He used a newspaper thin tape, right angle to the bone, snug-not tight- and on first flex in the morning upon arising. Very strict conditions!) . Ray Mentzer and Eddie Robinson both matched that measurement years later, but because they didn't have Sergio's small head, etc, their arms didn't exceed or even match the height of their head. Neither did Arnold's whose arm was taped by Jones at 19 7/8" with a slight pump (Arnold found out what Jones did and cheated before Jones caught him, lol). Lou Ferrigno's arm probably measured well over 20" cold, but didn't look as big as Sergios or Arnolds due his 6'5" height, bigger overall size and proportions.

I could stack every steroid/HGH combo know to man, and my arms would never be as big as my friggin cave man head. 7 3/4-7 5/8 hat size on a 5'8" guy is pretty troll-like! lol
It is also a given that if I ever get to show condition, my head is going to look like I have a pumpkin on my body, because I am 50-60lbs away from a show right now, and my head still looks too big!
