I came across a great deal in a supermarket and purchased a large quantity of smoked salmon which I think is delicious.

I could eat it until it comes out of my ears but upon examining the packet I am informed that one 50g slice contains 1.7g of sodium/salt which is 30% of the recommended daily amount.

If I was to eat 4 slices alone without taking into account anything else eaten during the day it would put me well over the daily limit.

Would excess sodium be harmful to health?

I smell death. :cloud:

Seriously, no clue.

Funny you should mention salmon. The one trainer at Gold's suggested that the sodium in the salmon packets I've been using might be causing water retention. Wtf? The two packets hold a total of 1200mg of sodium. I'm using sodium-free natty peanut butter and I haven't tried to calculate how much sodium I'm getting from the other items on my menu.

Thought the daily limit for sodium was around 1500mg.

(Googles)

Okay, got that wrong. Fifteen hundred is the minimum.

"The minimum sodium requirement is about 1,500 milligrams (mg) of sodium each day. This is less than 1 teaspoon of table salt. The maximum recommended level of sodium intake is 2,300 mg per day. On average, American men consume between 3,100 and 4,700 mg of sodium per day."

From http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/foodnut/09354.html

"It is well known that dietary sodium intake is positively associated with blood pressure. Increased blood pressure increases risk of cardiovascular disease. Previous ecological and animal studies have shown that a high sodium intake increases mortality following strokes."

Would excess sodium be harmful to health?

It seems likely based on that information.

I thought perhaps increasing your water intake would flush out or offset your sodium intake, however that's a no go from at least one comment found online.

"It would do no good to increase water consumption because it will just cause edema and isn't good for your cardiovascular system. It will raise your blood pressure and your heart has to work harder and the pressure against your blood vessels causes damage and weakness to the linings of the vessel walls. The best thing is to just cut out some sodium from your diet."

Of course that site's not exactly WebMD.com.

I know from conversations with at least one physician that some people are more sodium sensitive than others. Have you had your blood pressure checked recently?

Have mine checked whenever I donate blood. That's pretty regularly and mine has always been normal at the donation center.

Although I'm something of a cynic in certain instances. I'll bet my blood pressure is through the roof but those diabolical blood donation nurses just want to suck out a unit before I drop dead.

Ahem.

Good luck, Lord Skeletor!
