novice and open classes

I was looking at a local show that is not NPC. (sorry wasnt sure where to post this question) It has a novice class and an open class. What is the difference and when can you compete in which one?

Novice = Never won an overall title.... Open = you can have won an overall title.


I think that is right... at least for the NPC.
