I know there is always massive speculation about why the Pro Male BB's today are so much bigger than the pre 1990 ones, but are the reasons the same for the women?

Angela IrizarryYes! Good suggestion. Wasn't she an aspiring stand-up comedian?

Steve Wennerstrom
04-13-2010, 07:00 PM
Angela IrizarryHere's what I recall on Angela.

She was from Union City, California. At 4-11, she was densely developed with nice overall structural balance competing first as a MW (normally around 116 pounds), then dropping down - successfully - to a lightweight, before finishing her competitive efforts in a five year career.

My contest history for Angela is as follows:
1999 NPC Contra Costa 3rd MW
1999 NPC San Francisco 1st MW
1999 Ed Corney Muscle Classic 1st MW & Overall
1999 NPC Sacramento 1st MW
2000 NPC Contra Costa 1st MW
2000 NPC California 1st MW
2000 NPC Flex Wheeler Classic 1st MW & Overall
2001 NPC Junior Nationals 1st LW
2001 NPC Nationals 2nd LW
2004 NPC Contra Costa 5th MW

She worked as a billing coordinator for a pharmaceutical company, and managed her husband's career in stand-up comedy.

Okay Tre. Over to you to post a photo or two of Angela from her competitive days.

So many great Lightweights! Great article Steve! Thanks Sassy. I have gotten many emails of appreciation from European competitors who were mentioned in the article (I forget sometimes that there are readers all over the world) as well as some suggestions of other lightweight to add. I have also gotten a surprising number of inquiries about Kathy Illingworth from Australia. I'll cover Kathy at length a little later today and others as time permits.

So many great Lightweights! Great article Steve!Okay, here's the scoop on Aussie Kathy Illingworth:

Her competitive career is an unusual one, but well worth mentioning in detail. She was just barely 5-0 tall and normally weighed around 110 pounds in contest shape throughout her career. From Burleigh Heads, Queensland, Australia, she competed at a furious pace from 1980 to 1987. She then left the competitive stage completely before returning 12 years later (a la Juliette Bergman's return in 2001) in 1999. The catch was Illingworth only competed once in 1999 finishing fifth at the IFBB World Amateur Championships and then, unfortunately, disappeared permanently. During her early years she competed in both NABBA and IFBB events with equal success in both.
Outside bodybuilding, Illingworth had a strong interest in theatre dance and arts, and was an avid cyclist. She was always bouncy and vivacious with seemingly endless stores of energy. Today she would be 51, but has not been heard from in years. If she's in the outback somewhere I'd love to hear from her.
Her sister, Deborah Compton was also a world class amateur bodybuilder who competed in both NABBA and IFBB contests over the years. In fact, Compton, who also represented Australia, finished fourth at the 1999 IFBB World Amateur Championships as a HW (5-3, 135), behind second place silver medalist Lisa Aukland. During her career, Compton won both the 1993 NABBA World and 1993 NABBA Universe titles in the Physique division.
The following is Kathy Illingworth's complete contest history as she prepared it for me in 1999:

1980 - NABBA Ms. New South Wales 1st
1980 - NABBA Ms. Oceana 1st
1980 - NABBA Ms. Pacific International 1st
1980 - NABBA Ms. Australasia 1st
1980 - NABBA Ms. Australia 1st
1981 - NABBA Ms. Australia 1st
1982 - NABBA Ms. Southern Hemisphere 1st
1982 - NABBA Ms. Australia 1st
1983 - NABBA Ms. Australia 1st
1984 - NABBA Ms. Australia 1st
1984 - IFBB Australian Championships 1st
1985 - IFBB Australian Championships(LW) 1st
1985 - IFBB World Amateur Championships(LW) 4th (Belgium)
1986 - IFBB Ms. South Africa International 1st
1986 - IFBB Australian Championships(LW) 1st
1986 - IFBB Asian Championships(LW) 5th
1986 - IFBB World Amateur Championships(LW) 2nd (Singapore)
1987 - IFBB Australian Championships(LW) 1st
1999 - IFBB World Amateur Championships(LW) 5th (Australia)

Needless to say she compiled a successful and colorful competitive career, and easily qualifies as one of the best pure amateur lightweights ever.

Coming up.....Angie Ashcraft, Renee Johns, and Pam Brooks among others. They are lightweights you might not be familiar with, but I think you'll agree - when you see their images - they were excellent bodybuilders. I also just added Jamie Troxell.

Agreed x2. I was in awe of her transformation from 1992 to 1994. She developed her quads to being ripped and huge with great vascularity and conditioning at the same time. Ans she was a lightweight.

Go For it! :beerbang:First, there's the unfinished business of adding lightweights to the thread that have been brought up by readers. And there's my desire to post photos that do the competitors justice.
Lots of readers/members want to have a look at the history of the heavyweights, but that may be too daunting. Especially when considering the fact that beginning in 1982 when the heavyweight class was first initiated, that division included any competitor over 123 pounds! Today many of the HW's 25 years ago would be MW's and LtHW's today. And the sheer numbers of mega-quality heavies is just overwhelming.
I'll need to run it by Dave to see what kind of space availability there is. Plus the time it will take me to put it all together.
MW's and LtHW's I could do much more quickly....and the LtHW's has an interesting history due to the long passage of time from 1987 when it was discontinued to its reinstatement in 2004. And on the other hand, I'm not getting any younger!

STEVE knows of women bodybuilders that don't even have photos anywhere on the entire internet. It's almost mind-boggling to think in this day and age. More photos Steve!I agree, you'd think every competitor would have surfaced by now. But there are so many that haven't. All the years of our travel to Europe for national contests as well as events like the IFBB Europeans, NABBA Europeans, WABBA Europeans...all in the 80's and 90's are still in the files of WPW and many of the photos, thousands, have never seen the light of day because we were limited to the space in the magazines. And the women from those events were VERY good.....even by today's standards.
I'm working on a story about the 1991 Ms. Olympia (an event that is already 19 years old) and the accompanying photos are very telling. Lenda Murray won the contest, but the photos of Bev Francis, Laura Creavalle, and Sandy Riddell show a competition that was incredibly close. As it was, Bev only lost by 1 point to Lenda.

You would need to pay me a visit to my home office to see what there is here. It even boggles my mind when I begin looking for something on a specific competitor and find 10 other items that would make interesting stories. If I could do a chapter every three months I'd be happy.
Tammy, keeping in mind I'm not a hoarder, I would need you, Sassy and Sally Ann to help put all the materials in some semblance of order, and that's just to get the ball rolling. You would need to see all the four-drawer file cabinets and file boxes to understand what I have accumulated over 33 years. And then, of course, there's my files on women's sports in general that goes back 40 years including the years I was editor of Women's Track & Field World magazine in the 70's.

The tiny country about the size of Ohio produced a remarkable number of world class women bodybuilders in that decade including Ellen Van Maris, Leny Tops, Peggy Ouwerling, Hannie Van Aken, and the list goes on and on. It just shows to prove that weight training helps slow down the aging process, not that 40+ is old. Seriously, you compare our 40 somethings of today versus 40 somethings of any other era in human history and we are much better off. There was a time when people died before hitting 40.

Erica IS ageless! Fantastic! How can you argue the value of hitting the gym when you can look like that at 40+?Without knowing Erika's exact birthdate, I'd have to say she would be more like 50. Considering she was winning titles in 1980 (30 years ago) and guessing she was probably at least 20 at the time.......oh well, no matter. She still looks fetching!
A side story.
I will never forget the day John Nafpliotis and I were taking a walk in front of the contest hotel on the promenade in Nice, France. The occasion was the 1988 IFBB Pro World Championships. The promenade was elevated above the beach and you could look down to see the sunbathers. The beach on the Cote de Azur is very rocky, so sunbathers all needed to rent a cushion to lay on.
And there, in the midst of the many pasty, out-of-shape tourists, lay Erika Mes in all her physical perfection. Having taken her top off and wearing a thong bikini, she was laying on her stomach. We jokingly shouted down to her about getting up and showing us her compulsory poses. She laughed and shook her finger at us.
I still have that striking vision of her in my mind. It's been 22 years ago and it seems like just yesterday. Erika's glutes were like two cantaloupes wrapped in cellophane, and that visual stopped just about everyone who happened by on the promenade. She was then, and still is, a true beauty.

Steve, have you ever given any thought to writing muscle erotica? With so much visual erotica 'out there' these days, who would ever take the time to read it? :-))

Without knowing Erika's exact birthdate, I'd have to say she would be more like 50.

Hey, this is a great thread, fantastic to see you here Steve! I miss WPW, I grew up with that mag. Gone are the days we, in the UK, had to wait 6 months to hear who had won the Ms O! Every WPW that came out had more exciting new athletes, with even more muscle, it was a great time in the 80's and early 90's. I wish the internet had been around in those days. I would love to have seen Kathy Unger in HQ!

Erica was born 13 november 1961, so she will be 49 this year.

As for WPW, I guess, in a way, we all grew up with it each year. Over most of the years WPW was publishing we were traveling all over the world to cover the contests. You can't imagine the anticipation we felt each time we traveled to Europe and discovered one outstanding bodybuilder after another. All the great Dutch competitors, the Germans (lead by Anja Langer), and the growth of women's bodybuilding in central and eastern Europe. It was a great time.
And Kathy Unger? In her day there weren't many women around who had better abs. They were extraordinary. In fact, they're great by today's standards.

Or what about New Jersey's Karen Pica? She had those incredibly striated chest muscles that would still be considered outstanding today. In fact, it is superior to a lot of competitor's chest muscles in being ripped.

Thanks for posting Gert. You'll be reading lots more as I put together a big article on Holland's Bodybuilding Machine of the 80's. The tiny country about the size of Ohio produced a remarkable number of world class women bodybuilders in that decade including Ellen Van Maris, Leny Tops, Peggy Ouwerling, Hannie Van Aken, and the list goes on and on. I still remain in close contact with Juliette and her sister Leona - both are still very much involved in Dutch bodybuilding as I'm sure you are aware.

That would be awesome, looking forward to that article. Holland still produces good athlete's but other countries catched up with us....;)

Today we had the nationals and i can show you a pictures of an awesome athlete that was in hospital just one week ago but still showed up in good shape....good enough to win the titel...

Reppin for the lightweights :)Here are a few more outstanding lightweights who roamed the stages over the years. Photos of those mentioned in this post will be coming soon.

RENEE JOHNS

A striking 5-2, 114-pound native New Yorker, Renee Johns was always ripped and ready to compete. Her competitive career was relatively short, but on the occasions when she competed - especially at the national level - she did very well. Her physical calling cards were a double wide lat spread, a tiny waistline, and a chiseled level of conditioning from head to toe.
Living both in Florida and in Maplewood, NJ, in the 90's, Johns trained at the famed Diamond Gym run by John Kemper in New Jersey. After winning the LW class at the '96 NPC Nationals (Gayle Moher won the MW and overall, and Betty Pariso took the HW class) Johns drifted away from competition and never pursued the pro ranks. Her best competitive years came between the ages of 22 and 25. Highly intelligent (she graduated from high school at 16 and had her Bachelor's degree in aviation management and flight technology by the time she was 19), Johns was employed as a commercial pilot during her competitive years, and is presumably still involved at some level in the aviation industry. Today Renee would be 39 years old.
A detailed profile on Renee can be found in the September/October 1996 issue of WPW.

Her contest history:

1992 NPC Brevard County Championships 1st LW (at 100 pounds)
1992 NPC Central Florida 1st LW
1993 NPC Eastern States 1st LW & Overall
1994 NPC Junior Nationals 1st LW
1994 NPC Nationals 3rd LW
1995 NPC USA 2nd LW
1995 NPC Nationals 2nd LW
1996 NPC Nationals 1st LW (at 114 pounds)

Next up...........

Lori Hayden

Reppin for the lightweights :)Perhaps one of the lesser known lightweights who achieved a major level of success was LORI HAYDEN.

From Agana Heights, Guam, Lori Hayden was about as isolated as can be imagined while she trained as a bodybuilder in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. At 5-3, and generally weighing around 114 pounds, Hayden was beautifully balanced with very aesthetic bodylines. An active competitor for six years, Hayden began her competitive efforts in 1999 when she finished second in the LW class at the Guam National Championships. She briefly moved up to the MW class to win the overall 2000 South Pacific Championships held in New Caledonia.
Then, from 2001 to 2003 Hayden took an impressive journey at the international level when she placed a distant 15th at the 2001 IFBB World Amateur Championships as a LW. In 2002 she returned to the same event and moved up to the eighth position. But 2003 would be her breakthrough year when she made another sweeping improvement to become the IFBB World Amateur lightweight champion. The same year she again moved up to the MW class winning the gold medal and overall titles at the IFBB South Pacific Games in Fiji.
Following those successes Hayden's efforts to remain a competitive MW were unsuccessful and she left the competitive stage in 2005. One thing is certain, she was bodybuilding's 'Queen of the South Pacific' over the coarse of her six-year career. Today Hayden would be 38 years old.

Lori Hayden's contest history:

1999 Guam National Championships 2nd LW
2000 South Pacific Championships 1st MW & Overall
2001 IFBB World Amateur Championships 15th LW (Brazil)
2002 IFBB World Amateur Championships 8th LW (Czech Republic)
2003 IFBB World Amateur Championships 1st LW (Spain)
2003 IFBB South Pacific Games 1st MW & Overall
2004 IFBB World Amateur Championships 9th MW (Spain)
2005 World Games 12th MW

more to come..........

You're getting ahead of me Gun Girl! There are MANY former track & field athletes competing in bodybuilding, fitness and figure. MANY! But I have a list for a future article on women who have competed in the Olympic Games that also competed in bodybuilding, fitness or figure at one time or another. I'm gathering photos when time permits. It will be an interesting article. By the way, a couple are gold medalists, and one was a bronze medalist.

A slight OT on female track stars. Blanka Vlasic, Carolina Kluft and Alenka Bikar are great track athletes and I made threads for them.

I'm sure Erin Stern would love to meet Blanka Vlasic. The 6'4" high jumper is an entertaining phenom with her own post jump dance without being cocky like male ball and stick athletes here. All 3 are great athletes and even greater people.

Reppin for the lightweights :)Most fans of women's bodybuilding will recognize Italy's CLAUDIA PARTENZA from her pro competitions where she competed in the United States. Having entered the pro ranks in 2007 Partenza has competed five times (twice at the Europa Super Show (2007 and '08), and once at the Atlantic City Pro in 2007, the Tampa Pro in 2008, and most recently at the 2009 New York Pro Championships with her best finish coming at the 2008 Europa Super Show placing 5th in the LW class.
But for Partenza, her greatest level of fame and success came at international amateur competitions where she was highly decorated.
Beginning her competitive efforts in 2003 in local Italian events, Partenza won back-to back overall Italian National titles in 2004 and 2005 - each time as a LW. In 2005 she won the IFBB Mediterranean Championships, before moving on the 2006 IFBB European Championship where she was a LW & Overall champion.
The 2006 competitive season turned out to be Partenza's most successful as she added an LW and Overall victory at the IFBB World Amateur Championships, followed by a gold medal effort at the IFBB World Masters Championships.
Although the pro level has been far more difficult competitively for the 43-year-old mother of two, Partenza is, nonetheless, one of the world's best lightweights in the past decade.

Claudia Partenza's Contest History:

2003 Italian Night of Champions 1st
2004 IFBB Italian Championships 1st LW & Overall
2004 IFBB European Championships 3rd LW
2004 Italian Night of Champions 1st
2005 IFBB Italian Championships 1st LW & Overall
2005 IFBB Mediterranean Championships 1st
2006 IFBB European Championships 1st LW & Overall
2006 IFBB World Amateur Championships 1st LW & Overall
2006 IFBB World Masters Championships 1st LW
2007 Europa Super Show Pro 6th LW
2007 Atlantic City Pro 11th LW
2008 Tampa Pro 7th
2008 Europa Super Show Pro 5th LW
2009 New York Pro Championships 15th

Reppin for the lightweights :)Most of us may not realize it, but JAMIE TROXEL is not only one of America's finest lightweights, but she is a three decade competitor in bodybuilding having competed in the 80's, 90's and 2000's. Should she compete in 2010, she'll make it four decades.
Beginning her competitive bodybuilding efforts in 1989 as a 17-year-old Troxel entered the NPC Florida Space Coast finishing second in the Teen division.
It would be nearly five more years before she entered the 1994 NPC Las Vegas Classic where she finished third in the LW class.
Taking another break of six years where she gave birth to two children and joining the USMC as an aviation electrician, Troxel spent much of her time stationed in both Virginia and Okinawa, Japan.
Winning the LW and overall titles at the 2000 Far East Championships in Okinawa, it was then Troxel began making consistent visits to the competitive stage for the next six years.
Most notable in her career efforts was a trio of LW victories in 2003 that included the NPC Virginia (also the overall winner), the NPC US Armed Forces Championships, and NPC Team Universe.
From 2004 to 2006 the 5-2, 114-pound Troxel began a methodical rise in the LW National placements finishing 3rd at the 2004 NPC Nationals, followed by a runner-up finish in 2005, and eventuating in a victory at the 2006 Nationals where she qualified for pro status.
In her only trip to the pro level, Troxel missed placing at the 2009 Atlantic City Pro Championships - an all-to-familiar finish for many who make their pro debut.
Along with her bodybuilding efforts, Troxel has took part in numerous powerlifting competitions between 1992 and '93, and was a national class competitive roller skater who won the 2003 Eastern Regionals in both solo and figure events.

Jamie Troxell's Contest History:

1989 NPC Florida Space Coast 2nd Teen
1989 NPC Junior Florida ?
1994 NPC Las Vegas Classic 3rd LW
2000 Far East Championships 1st LW & Overall
2001 NPC Virginia Natural 1st LW & Overall
2001 NPC Junior Nationals 2nd LW
2002 NPC Bodyrock 2nd LW
2003 NPC Virginia 1st LW
2003 NPC US Armed Forces 1st LW
2003 NPC Team Universe 1st LW
2004 NPC Nationals 3rd LW
2005 NPC Nationals 2nd LW
2006 NPC Nationals 1st LW
2009 Atlantic City Pro DNP

Reppin for the lightweights :)Very few lightweights can claim the uniqueness of Washington's TONIA WILLIAMS as it relates to her competitive bodybuilding career. You see, she has the distinction of having competed in the lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight divisions over the coarse of a career that began in 1996 and culminated with a 12th-place finish at the 2005 Ms. Olympia.
Standing 5-2, Williams launched her career efforts with a LW class win at the 1996 NPC Oregon Coast Championships followed by a third-place LW finish at the NPC Northwest. By 1998 she had moved up to MW and was the overall winner at both the NPC Northwest and NPC Evergreen State that year. Two years later Williams bumped up to the HW class and at the national level she placed second at the 2000 NPC Junior Nationals and sixth at the NPC Nationals.
In 2001 Williams continued her roller coaster weight class ride finishing second at the NPC USA as a MW. In 2003 she earned her pro status by winning the NPC National middleweight title.
Her journey went full circle in 2005 when Williams made her pro debut at the Europa Super Show winning (coincidentally) the lightweight class! The win earned her a qualification to the 2005 Ms. Olympia.
While her stage career can, by no means, be considered conventional or consistent, Tonia Williams still qualifies as one of the sports best lightweights........and a pretty good middleweight as well!

Tonia Williams Contest History:

1996 NPC Oregon Coast 1st LW (Under 114)
1996 NPC Northwest 3rd LW
1997 NPC Ironman Fitness 3rd
1998 NPC Northwest 1st MW & Overall
1998 NPC Evergreen State 1st MW & Overall
2000 NPC Junior Nationals 2nd HW
2000 NPC USA 6th HW (@ 141 1/2)
2001 IFBB North American 8th HW
2001 NPC USA 2nd MW
2002 NPC USA 3rd MW
2003 NPC Nationals 1st MW
2005 Europa Super Show 1st LW
2005 Ms. Olympia 12th

thanks for the posts of the t&f women ibarra. Being a women's t&f coach for 12 years, they are never off topic to me, but i did want to keep plugging away at the many great lightweights still to be covered.
I'll be happy to do a thread on t&f competitors with excellent physiques in the future as i have a file cabinet full of them. And as i am sure high jumper erin stern would freely admit, t&f produces many outstanding physiques especially in the sprints, hurdles and heptathlon.

Reppin for the lightweights :)I had a PM the other day asking about what contests Susie Jaso competed in before she won both the NPC USA and NPC Nationals LW classes in 1985.

On my earliest bio sheets from Susie she competed in the following:

1982 AFWB Mission Viejo Muscle Classic 4th LW
1982 AFWB Orange County Muscle Classic 7th LW
1983 AFWB California Gold Cup 3rd LW
1984 NPC Palm Springs Muscle Classic 1st LW & Overall
1984 NPC Southern California 1st LW
1984 NPC California 4th MW
1985 NPC Los Angeles 2nd MW

Then she caught fire and won the 1985 USA and National lightweight titles, and entered the pro ranks in 1986 where she competed for three years. Her MW competitions in those days still had her weighing less than 114 pounds.

You should know that those guys steal everything from entire posts to pics and every thing else. I heard that you were on that board too. So, how do we know if that is really you or a doppleganger? And to be clear, It wan not me. I think alomost everyone who is a member of unreal has a 'double' over there.

The pics I posted are also public pics not Members pics. People post pics all the time. If you have a problem with this, go after every single person you see doing this not just me. And I'm not just talking about bodybuilding pictures. If other people in the industry have an issue with me posting pics, then they would have pmed me or complained to the mods. You are just taking this beef with Steve very personal.

You might also note that when I posted a great volume of contest pics at unreal, I always cited the owners. I did not think it necessary to do that here. So if you really have a problem with this, I challenge you to bring this up in every single board that you visit with everyone that posts pictures of any kind.

Going back to your reference to the SorryAss site, The main complaint is that the members are trading passwords and paid members content. The photographers have no issue with the free samples which are where i Get the pics from anyway. And if you accuse me of any wrong doing, expect a lawsuit for defamation of character.

We never had any run ins in the past, I don't know why you decided to pick a fight with me now.

Again, if it is okay with the admin and mods, it is ok with me.

Never said you specifically. But take a look around. Go on... we will wait.

Go to an automotive forum. Someone may have posted a picture of a Z06 Corvette that is not theirs. Go to a videogame forum. Someone posted a picture of something from icanhazcheeseburger.com that is not theirs. Go to a Star Trek forum, and see a picture of someone who was at a convention in an ill-fitting Federation uniform, and everyone is talking trash about it. The guy who posted the picture, that is not him in it, and he certainly did not take it... he found it somewhere else.

Hell... look at a Kai Greene thread here. The OP... does he own the picture that clearly states that it was posted at MD, and taken by whomever? No.

NO. NO, NO, NO. Anyone who does care will say something about it. But... ah, hell, you see where I am going with this.

While I do understand what you are saying, because I have run into it before, please believe me when I tell you that more often than not, no one cares about it.

because i hate thieves
fbbs dont have paying sponsors like a kai
most have a part of their income helping pay the costs with their websites, photoshoots etc.
BUT there is a group of people that steal the content.
mayor websites that in the past allways paid the fbbs for shootings at the contests(in that way most fbbs could cover their travel costs ) are in big finacial troubles because of this

I would love to know just how big the financial troubles are. If that were the case, pictures on their sites would either be copy protected or posted in a format where they could not be reproduced anywhere else (at least in their original format).

The bottom line is this: it is going to happen. This is the Information Age. While there are ways around it, it pretty much is expected. RX photographer Chris Zimmerman's work has been seen on other sites... I have seen this myself. And I doubt any of those people had his permission. Does he care? You should ask him. Send him a PM.

Photographer information and a site address, maybe even a "property of..." or "copyright of..." appear on almost any picture these days. So people know where it came from, whatever the picture is. And again, if anyone ever has any problem with it, they will speak on it to the appropriate people. Trying to stir something up with someone on here for something that is widely accepted and done, and has nothing to do with you at all does not speak well for you.

But just so that everyone is clear... No one post pictures of Jana! I do not want to see what happens.

Steve - I was thinking of Barbara Fletcher as one of the lightest lightweights I've seen - who is the lightest of the national level / pro lightweights?Well, it would be pretty tough to find another lightweight that has done as well as Barbara considering her tiny stature.. I believe I made mention of Barbara at the end of my original story.
I intend to add a few more LW's to this thread that I feel are worthy and interesting. One in particular is Satina Watson from Washington. She was 4-9 and competed at 92 pounds. She competed in the mid-80's and although she never won the Nationals or USA, she was selected to compete at the 1985 IFBB World Junior Championships in Australia. To qualify, a competitor had to be under 21 years of age (Satina was just 20) at the time of the contest. She WON the LW class, with a budding future star named Anja Langer winning the MW's. Speaking of budding future stars, Satina's fellow American competitor who competed in the men's division at that event was none other than Shawn Ray- and yes, he also won his class. Satina was in pretty good company at that contest. More on Satina later..............

ARMINDA DEL RIVIEROFrom Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Angie Ashcraft didn't compete a whole lot in her brief career as a bodybuilder, but when she did, she made it count. At just 5-0 and weighing 112 for most of her contests, Ashcraft competed from 1992 to 1996. Working as a computer programmer/analyst at the time, she stepped aside from entering further contests after a runner-up finish at the '96 NPC Nationals.

Her contest history:

1992 NPC Gold's Classic in Tuscaloosa 1st LW & Overall
1992 NPC Alabama 1st LW & Overall
1994 NPC Junior USA 1st LW
1995 NPC USA 1st LW
1996 NPC Nationals 2nd LW

ARMINDA DEL RIVIERO from Vancouver, BC, Canada also had a relatively brief but successful career that began in 1988 and ended as a pro in 1993. Highly exotic on stage with an extensive dance background, Del Riviero also competed as a LW her entire career. Only when she turned pro did she encounter the difficulties that came with possessing a diminutive structure. At 5-2 1/2, she appeared considerably taller due to her long, and very shapely legs. A famed photographer in the early 90's upon seeing her pose said that she had the best proportioned and most beautifully shaped legs he had ever seen on a female bodybuilder. The accompanying photos here were taken (by yours truly) in 2008, showing vividly that she had maintained much of the alluring body shape and musculature that made her a popular model in both Flex Magazine and MuscleMag when she last competed 15 years earlier.

Her contest history:

1988 Vancouver City Championships 1st LW
1988 British Columbia Provincials 1st LW
1989 Western Canadians 1st LW
1989 Canadian Nationals 2nd LW
1990 Canadian Nationals 4th LW
1991 Canadian Nationals 1st LW
1992 Jan Tana Pro Classic 17th
1993 Jan Tana Pro Classic 19th

Reppin for the lightweights :)One of the smallest of the small lightweights in the sport's early days was Washington's SATINA WATSON. A little known LW who managed to snag a big title during her brief competitive career.
At just 4-9 and competing at between 92 and 98 pounds throughout the three years she competed, Watson came on like a ball of fire in 1984. From Seattle, the tiny former gymnast and soccer player who also dabbled in choreography with the jazz team at Central Washington University, competed in six contests in '84 before taking a crack at the national level in '85 and '86. Beginning with a runner-up LW placing at the 1984 NPC Central Washington, Watson gained valuable stage experience for what would soon follow. She was only 19 at the time.
In 1985 Watson won the LW class at the big NPC Emerald Cup. She then got her first taste of the national-level with an 8th-place finish at the NPC USA. But it was her 6th-place finish at the NPC Nationals that caught the eye of NPC Prez Jim Manion. When he realized she was only 20 and the selection for the IFBB World Junior Championships was just a month later (to be held in Sydney, Australia), he felt she would be a solid choice based on her physical attributes and stage presence. All five LW placers who finished in front of Watson at those Nationals were over 21 years of age (the limited to compete in the World Junior event). Said Manion at the time, " I felt good about sending Satina down to Australia to compete. I knew she had a legitimate chance to win and we were happy to give her the opportunity".
Watson didn't disappoint. She won the lightweight class World Junior title.
Along with Watson on the trip was a budding teen star named Shawn Ray from California. Ray was the overall winner at the NPC Teen Nationals in 1985. He too would win his class to produce an American lightweight sweep.
Recalls Watson of the competition, "Shawn and I were the only Americans, so we hung out together. But we were a bad influence on each other. We were always eating junk food....tons of it.....and before the contest!"
Satina Watson only competed one more time - at the 1986 NPC Nationals where she slipped to 12th - finding out, perhaps, that her pre-contest diet from Australia would only work once!
Still, she left the sport having won an IFBB World title.

Satina Watson's Contest History:

1984 NPC Central Washington 2nd LW
1984 NPC Wenatchee 2nd LW
1984 NPC Teen Southwest Washington 1st LW & Overall
1984 NPC Southwest Washington 1st LW & Overall
1984 NPC Teen Washington 1st LW & Overall
1984 NPC Inland Empire (Wa) 3rd LW
1985 NPC Emerald Cup 1st LW
1985 NPC USA 8th LW
1985 NPC Nationals 6th LW
1985 IFBB World Junior Championships 1st LW
1986 NPC Nationals 12th LW

A side note: The middleweight women's winner at the IFBB World Junior contest that year as another young budding German star named Anja Langer.

Steve Wennerstrom

Not to be forgotten in this sea of notable lightweights is an Oklahoman who has drifted back and forth between the lightweight and middleweight classes over the course of her 14-year competitive career - with good success in each.
Over the years we have known her as Tonie Norman, Antoinette Norman, and more recently Antoinette Thompson. But by any name she is a very fine bodybuilder who has been entering contests since her first novice lightweight and overall victory at the 1996 NPC Oklahoma. After one more entry at the local level where she won the MW & Overall title at the 1997 NPC Red River Classic (also in Oklahoma), Thompson was off to the national and pro levels that have progressed to the current day.
Mounting a collection of second and third-place finishes at events like the NPC Junior Nationals and Junior USA's from 1998 to 2001, Thompson captured the MW and Overall crowns at the 2002 NPC Team Universe.
Turning pro in 2003, Thompson was fortunate to find weight classes at the pro level while she was establishing her pro identity. As a lightweight pro she shined, winning that class at the 2005 Charlotte Pro Championships, and 2007 Sacramento Pro Championships, while placing in the top three on two additional occasions.
Having always shown pleasing structural lines and a well-balanced overall physique, Thompson has slowly, but steadily, improved each year she has competed.
Now with 16 pro contests (which includes two entries in the Ms. O and four invites to the Ms. I) to go with what was a active amateur career, Thompson has allowed her weight to nudge upward to the 137-140 pound range now that the pro weight classes are no longer contested.
Next, she plans to enter her third contest of the 2010 season when she travels to the Tampa Pro Championships in Florida.
Clearly, this is an Oklahoman that is OK!

I luv Tonie's look!Yep, me too. In my post I left out an important word about her competing since 1996. The fact is she has competed CONSISTENTLY since 1996.....never missed a year without entering at least one contest over 14 years. That's a pretty strong level of dedication to her sport........

I was asked who I thought was the best lightweight winner of the NPC Junior Nationals. Although there have been some very good LW's at that contest over the years, I would have to say SHARON ARRILDT (MARVEL) tops the list. As it turns out, Sharon has been the only lightweight to win the overall title at the Junior Nationals in the previous 24 years of the event and she won it in 1987.
During her amateur career Sharon competed as a LW, MW and HW, and as a pro she held her own pretty well. After winning the NPC National MW title in 1989 she competed in four Ms. Olympia events placing as high as 5th in 1991. She also placed 6th in the 1993 Ms. International. Structurally and genetically blessed, her physique was truly a marvel of muscular beauty.

One of the smallest of the small lightweights in the sport's early days was Washington's SATINA WATSON.

There's more to add about Satina's contest exploits. While pushing through my 'W' file I found an additional bio sheet noting that she also finished second at the 1984 NPC Evergreen State as a 98-pound LW. A year later she "ballooned" up to 104 pounds to finish second in the 1985 NPC USA Mixed Pairs Championships with partner Joe Dawson. Now to find that Pairs photo......

MICHELLE DAVIS won the 2003 NPC Nationals at 5'0", 114lbs........ she won the lightweight class unanymously-- beating 27 competitors-- the largest LW Class in the prior decade at that point.

She out-muscled her LW opponents at the age of 46 (she only started bbing at age 44). in 2001 she placed 13th (at her first nationals) and in 2002 she moved up to 4th.

Davis holds an engineering degree from BARUCH COLLEGE in NYC.....she remains the OLDEST competitor ever to win the LW Class at the NPC Nationals.

She also became the first black woman to win the LW division at the NPC Nationals....and is still the only black winner in the history of that class.

Davis competed 3x as an IFBB Pro-- 5th in the LW Class at the 2004 Night of Champions, 9th at the Show off Strength, and 5th LW at the Southwest Pro Cup in Texas.

^^^^

Okay, here's the scoop on Aussie Kathy Illingworth:

Very cool. ^^^^

And very sad that she passed too soon. :-(
