A couple of month ago I finally got a BFT (big fucking tire). I was in a rut until that day. Since then I have been training a lot harder. I'm basically going to use this log for PRs and event training. I hope to put some video up too.

04/29/10

Harness Sled pull
235 x 170 feet to warm up. Basically a jog. My sled is made from a cheap sheet metal wheel barrel. Its near death so I m not going too heavy.

Farmers
305 ea hand x 35 feet. A PR but I have only done farmers one other time this year, 255/hand for 80 feet.

Tire flip
600 lb tire x 20 flips non stop.

F 150 Truck pull up a slight incline
100 feet, not timed but it was pretty easy.

I meant to start posting this last week. I am training with a couple buddies who are just starting out doing strongman training. I dont think they are looking to compete but who knows

keg carry

220lbs x 140' + 40'

sled drag

230 x 165'

Farmers carry

255 x 100' + 55'

tire flip

600lb x 22 flips PR

truck pull

f-150 x 160'

My conditioning is going a lot better. All events completed within an hour and a half. I was winded after each event but I recovered a lot faster. Nothing was overly heavy either. I had a lot o extra guys over today. my two buddies and 5 young guys. No one able to compete yet but they did really well for only being 160lbs at best.

Man I'd love to get me a BFT also.
I got plenty of room to use it.

They are usually free. You just have to find a place that deals in farm tires and a truck. They even loaded it for me.

Thanks tjoe. I am setting my sites on the contest at Crash's gym. Some unusual events.

Viking Press (maximal weight)

"Last Man Standing" Rules will apply. Loaded weight on apparatus will increase by roughly 50 lbs each time. Athlete MAY pass on any lifting attempt. Strict press and push press allowed, split-jerk or squat-jerk techniques will be forbidden (a slight double-knee bend is ok but will be at judge's discretion).

Stone Deadlift

Athlete will stand on platform above the ground. A stone in a harness with a handle will be set below athlete's feet. Athlete will have 60 seconds to complete as many lifts of the stone as possible. Handle will be roughly 12"-14" from the base of the platform. Sumo-style deadlift will be necessary.
Women: 300lb stone
LW/HW teen, LW/HW novice: 450lb stone
200/231: 500-lb stone

Equipment allowed: Lifting Straps
Equipment NOT allowed: Sticky stuff, Squat/deadlift suits, supportive briefs, erector shirts, etc.

Flip Medley (3 fingers, 3 tires)

Athlete will flip three tires of increasing difficulty and three fingers of increasing weight (order will be 3 tires, 3 fingers or 3 tire-finger pairs). Split times will be taken on each successful flip.
Tire Weights: 500, 600, 700 (all similar dimensions)
Fingers will be roughly 18 feet long. Approximate weights TBA.
All male competitors will use the same implements
**Women: two tires, two fingers.

Conan's Wheel (distance)

Athlete will support and carry a loaded lever in a circular path for maximal distance. Lever must be carried in the crook of the arms in Zercher style (judge's discretion). Lever is eight feet long (50-foot circumference of circle) No time limit, set-down completes the lift. Athlete will be given one three-step window to establish footing before set-down rule applies. Approximate weight (as felt in arms):
LW/HW teen: 300, LW/HW Novice: 300
200/231: 350

Odd-object Shouldering Medley "Circle of Six"

Six different implements will be arranged in a circle. Athlete will move from the marked center of the circle to the object where he/she will clean or shoulder it (whichever is appropriate). Any order is allowed, but athlete must return to the center of the circle after each successful attempt. Split times will be taken upon returning to circle's center. A 75-second time limit will be imposed. Athlete may begin with hands on first implement of choice.

last event looks funky.
love the viking press! one comp I won it and the other I tied for second (without training it). I recommend two things here... Heavy Z presses which will increase absolute shoulder strength. standing push presses which will acclimate your WHOLE body and especially the core to handling heavy weight overhead. Also really helps you coordinate your leg drive and shoulder press.
Hope that helps out a bit.
Comp looks sweet!

Thanks tjoe. Yeah the viking press is a new one on me. Thanks for the advice. I am not sure i can really train for too much here, so my goal is to have endurance and general strength.

Due to my involuntary immersion into local politics, I haven't been around much lately. I have only worked half as much as normal, for the last couple of weeks.
Tjoe, I am will train everything I can, but a few of these things are so bizarre I will be unable to attempt them until contest day.

05/19/10

Yoke Walk

90 x 20'
270 x 10'
450 x 10' + 90' + 115'

Zircher carry (to emulate the Conan's wheel)

360 x 115' + 115'

Tire Flip

600 x 28 flips, 280 or so feet

I slept like shit so everything was slow with long breaks between. No training partners today either.

I haven't been keeping up on my log.

two weeks ago

yoke walk
550 x 100' + 100'

I think I was over trained at this point because I could barely lift farmers
255 per hand x 20' + 20'

Tire flip
600 x 20

06/10/10

zircher carry
410 x 40' + 40' It wasn't the weight but where it was on my stomach. I couldn't breathe at all.

Farmers Carry

255 ea x 85' + 100' the last was fast, not sure of the time though

I wasn't planning on a event day, it just happened. A buddy came over with his two boys, they trained stuff for football. My legs were smoked from the previous squat day. I woke up today so stiff and sore it took me two or three times to get out of bed. I am feeling better now that I loosened up. I even made it to the gym for strict presses.

Despite a forecast of 90+ degree heat and thunderstorms, it was a beautiful day for strongman. The rain never came and there was a breeze all day.
Due to the potential for the downpour the promoter decided to change the order of the events.
The tire flip/finger medley went first. Another competitor was saying it was going to be a cardio session more than anything. He was right. With 4 tires, ranging from a couple hundred pounds to 600-700lbs. Followed by two fingers. I am not sure how much they weighed. I walked through the course in 32.55. My wife says I could have shaved a few seconds off by running. I got 4th.
The Conan's Wheel was next. I had been practicing with my yoke but never felt I could breathe. They loaded up 500lbs or so of plates but it was supposed to be about 350 in hand. I gutted out three revolutions for 150 feet. It was good enough for 2nd.
The Viking press was next. I have never done a viking press before. They used the same implement as for the Conan's which pivoted on a Hitch ball. Overhead pressing is not my strong suit, I only got my first two lifts. Which tied me for 4th/5th. After I was eliminated from the last man standing event, the weld partially gave way and the remaining competitors switched to a 10-12 inch log. The weight went up to 352lbs. only one 265 and one 266+ competitor attempted the 352lbs. The 265 got the clean and began the press. He seemed to pull something which affected him for the rest of the contest. The 266+ competitor put up the log and I am told a 50lb PR! He then threw the log which landed on a 10lb plate, may it rest in pieces.
The stone deadlift was the 4th event. This event was crazy, they chained a stone up, hooked it up to a row vbar. We stood on a 18" or so platform with the stone in the center. I had been practicing something similar using 45lb plates and a chain. I got the go command and quickly pulled one but failed to lock it out. I then got in a good rythm, pulling 9 in a row. I still had plenty of time so I attempted two more in the next 30 seconds, I couldn't get a good lockout. I got 3rd in this event.
The final event was the circle of 6 shouldering lift. The six objects were a 230(?) lb 3" axle, 275lb 13" log, 215lb 3" DB, 225lb sandbag, 215lb stone and a 230lb keg. We could choose any order we wanted. I went log, DB, sandbag, stone, failed to get the keg. I hit my wall trying the keg and never got to the axle. I really don't know that I could have gotten the axle, I only did 1 practice try 20 minutes before the contest and have never done it before. I got 3rd in this event.
When my name was called as the third place winner I was rather shocked, I thought I was too far behind. I ended up .5 pts over the 4th place guy.
On a side note I saw some awesome feats of strength, talked to a lot of great guys and genuinely had a great time. The staff guys worked extremely hard resetting the events. I would definitely do another contest at Jakked!
