American Strongman Corporation (ASC) has officially announced that the 2009 America’s Strongest Man® (ASM) contest will be held July 25 - 26 in conjunction with the Mountain Fest in Morgantown, West Virginia, and it promises to add a new dimension to strongman competitions by building on the “Live” concept that ASC has developed.

ASC has announced its 2009 America’s Strongest Man® contest, where it will blend muscle, music and motorcycles. Logo courtesy of Dione Wessels.

To put this contest in context, let’s start by talking about North American Strongman (NAS).

As the well-established amateur strongman federation, “NAS is the foundation of strongman in America,” explained NAS vice president Dione Wessels, and “in order for an athlete to become an ASC athlete, they must first compete as an amateur.” Open to all, “NAS welcomes anyone to give strongman a try,” said Wessels. And if you do well in NAS, you can move up the ladder, graduating to professional contest.

“There are two ways for an athlete to get his pro card - either by winning a Platinum Plus amateur contest, or by winning nationals,” said Wessels. “There are three Platinum Plus contests per year that an amateur athlete can compete in and the first one this year is in April in Orlando, Florida. [The next one is in] June in San Diego, California, and the final one is in August in Dallas, Texas. The contest in California is also the wildcard show whereas the winner not only gets his pro card, but also an automatic invite to ASM. The other way for an athlete to become pro is by winning the NAS National Championships which is held every year in the fall.”

“Since the qualifying system has been in place, we have seen great athletes like Derek Poundstone, Van Hatfield, Travis Ortmayer and many many more emerge,” said Wessels.

“The ‘Live’ events provide fans with live entertainment and gives the athletes a chance to create a fan base not only in their home town, but also across the country,” said Wessels, and that’s the context for the upcoming America’s Strongest Man® contest. “All ASC contests that have been held this year were qualifiers. All the athletes have to do is compete in order to qualify. Where they placed in the contests does not matter,” said Wessels.

And while the purse has not yet been announced, Wessels is optimistic: “Our marketing agent is currently negotiating with Harley Davidson and other non-fitness related companies, and it looks as though a minimum of the top ten athletes will be paid. American Strongman will also be working with Steve Slater, Williams Strength, and IronMind® on event details.”

Already qualified to compete are Brad "the Wolverine" Dunn, Handsome David Hansen, the Law Nick Brugal, Matt "the Cheese Wheel" Wanat, the Mad Scientist Rob Mulenbeurg, Carl Fommel, Big John Connor, Warrick Brant and Tamas Molitinski.

ASC VP Mike Johnston said, "The crowd here is going to be out of control. Absolute bedlam! And with two qualifying shows and a wildcard spot left this is sure to be a stacked field!"

A packed field indeed. ASC "Live" 2009 has qualifiers in Orlando, Florida and Battle Creek, Michigan in April and May respectively, and these are the last chances for active ASC Pros to compete. Johnston commented, "ASC is all inclusive this year. If you are an ASC pro contact the home office, compete in either Florida or Michigan, and you will qualify for the ASM. It is just that simple." Of course the winner of the of the NAS San Diego Platinum Plus earns the "Wildcard" spot.

So, will this be the year that the American Strongman scene is really united? Travis Ortmayer says he wants the ASM title. Fresh off a victory at the Arnold, Derek Poundstone says the ASM is his favorite and he wants it back. Steve MacDonald says he is planning to get back in the mix and Jason Kristol is reported to be training hard..

"These are our people," says ASC President Dione Wessels, "These are our fans. ASC have been all over the country promoting American Strongman and the fans love it! Any athlete that misses this opportunity to entertain the masses is just plain crazy. There are two chances left. Who has the desire and who sees the vision."

Asked about the upcoming American Strongman Corporation (ASC) America’s Strongest Man® (ASM) contest, ASC president Dione Wessels said, “I am simply HAPPY!!” And for very good reason.

Tough times don’t stop tough people: ASC is hosting its biggest ASM contest since 2004, ASC president Dione Wessels told IronMind. Artwork courtesy of Dione Wessels/ASC.

“Why? Because this is our largest ASM since 2004,” which is especially meaningful given the tough economic climate: “Sponsors have been very hard to get this year, but we still managed to get $10,000.00 in payout . . . and the city of Morgantown has been awesome to work with and extremely accommodating.”

“I think this show is one of the first breaks in the many obstacles we have had to face in the last four years and more recently in the last two years. It also shows some unity for the sport as we are willing to work with any organization to further the sport in America and throughout the world.”

And just who’s thrown in hat into ring? Here’s the official start list: David Hansen, Matt Wanat, Brad Dunn, Rob Meulenberg, Van Hatfield, Tamás Malatinszki, Carl Foemmel, John Conner, Warrick Brant, Travis Ortmayer, Marshall White, Scott Weech, Brian Turner, Chad Coy, Nick Courtad, Jason Davidson, Pete Konradt, Andy Vincent, Matt Dawson, Kevin Nee, and Derek Poundstone.

“The Lightweight Worlds have been hit or miss the last couple of years,” said ASC President, Dione Wessels, “But it is on in Kiev again and Justin has a good opportunity. We wish him the very best!” In other news, ASC announced it’s 2011 season today. The season will kick off in Columbus, Ohio with the 2nd Annual Arnold Amateur Strongman World Championship on March 4th & 6th. Other confirmed dates include America’s Strongest Man in Hot Spring Arkansas on August 5th & 6th and the Olympia Strongman Challenge on September 16th &17th. “We are very excited to announce these confirmed events early so athletes can plan their competition season,” said ASC VP Mike Johnston, “We are also announcing that the ASM and Olympia will be open to all active ASC HW Pros this year.” And in usual outspoken fashion, Johnston added, “So there will be no excuses for not competing in 2011. The best of the best are formally invited so, let the chips fall where they may.” Other contests are in negotiations so stay tuned for those as well. The ASC family would also like to extend and very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. May you and your families be blessed in 2011 and a special Holiday thanks to all of our troops serving at home and overseas. God Bless you all for your sacrifice.

This article was posted Decemeber 17, 2010 on the the ASC site www.americanstrongman.com (http://www.americanstrongman.com). The events will be announced very soon...on the RX Muscle PowerHour with Ryan Bracewell and Nathan Payton.

All,

The official announcement for the events for the 2011 America's Strongest Man will take place next Thursday May 12, 2011, on the Rx Muscle PowerHour with Nathan Payton and Ryan Bracewell. The event will take place in Hot Springs, Arkansas on August 5th & 6th, 2011. (It is kind of funny becasue Ryan won't actually be hosting that night and the show is recorded ealier. So he will have to wait and listen to the show to hear the events like all the other competitors!)

Stayed tuned!
