Steel has long been a fixture in the bodybuilding world. It is "the" hardcore gym within Manhattan's boundries.
It is operated by the friendly muscle guy Ken Hunt, who took it over about 4 years ago. It is a serious, no-nonsense gym, with all equipment needed. the athmosphere is friendly and welcoming. Big muscle guys training together with regular people. No attitude, guest passes for $15, very gay friendly (as one would expect in Chelsea) but not in any way intrusive. It's not a "beautiful people" gym like its neighbor, David Barton.
A lot of good coaches/trainers work at Steel as independents.
One would wish the locker room was in better shape. Recently, there have been some maintenance issues with regard to equipment not being fixed on time. The gym is extremely clean, spotless, actually.
