Posted on his facebook account yesterday....
Im pretty sure he did some interesting potions himself along the way.
"Gary Strydom (http://www.facebook.com/champwbf)
What happened to bodybuilding? Race horses!, where's the fun in that?!? Its suppose to be good/ healthy fun life style! They trying to build their bodys with gear only. Forget the juice aspect because that don't sell to normal ppl! I'm not buying, what they trying to sell! It sounds dead boring to me! Make it fun. It must be fun. They look so depressed???"

Okay, I love the guys from the 80s and early 90s. I think theirs are the best physiques in the history of the iron sport (in my opinion).
BUT, Strydom's words hold no weight for me. He jumped to the WBF, came back, couldn't hang (mainly because of his TOTAL lack of a back) and has talked smack about the top guys since then.
If that came from Haney or Labrada, I'd give it credence. From Strydom? Bitter boy that made bad decisions, whose biggest IFBB win wasn't deserved.

When someone's words come from a place of bitterness, it pretty much negated the intellectual honesty of their statement.
Regardless of how accurate it may or may not be...

Wouldn't say he jumped as much as was lured with mountains of money!

It seems like pretty much all retired bodybuilders say the same thing. Why?
- Do they gain perspective when they finally get out?
- Are they in a sense jealous or envious because they never achieved a look like the current lifters and never will?
- Do they suffer from the all too human "my time was the best" syndrome? The habit of viewing the past with rose tinted glasses.
- Some combo of the above.
It is interesting because I pretty much every case the same could and was said about them by the previous generation.
What about guys like Lee Haney, Gaspari or Labrada? Is that a case of "winners are grinners and losers can please themselves"?

I said when he came back, he couldn't hang. He promised a "comeback" for 4 years and when he finally came back, after promising to win the 1996 NOC, he got destroyed. After the contest, his excuse was "This is how I look walking in off the street..." Essentially saying that he just didin't try.
He's just a bitter dude that can't deal with time marching on.

Exactly my preference. Roughly '86 to '92. As it turns out the very first BB show I ever attended, '93 Mr. O, was the dawn of the GH era which I didn't care for. Everyone was just inching up in size until Dorian showed up that year with "the look".

Spoken like a true amateur as its not the drugs that have these guys looking like Zombies as you say its the diet and caloric deprevation. Also Id like to add that I know far to many IFBB Pros at the Top of the mountain so to speak and they are using FAR LESS gear than the majority of the amateurs. So quick all of those are who arent in the circle to blame success on a magical pill or drug etc. Stop the hate and jealousy cause you sound like every lame ass jealous dude that lifts 3 days a week and does a chest and arm workout just before he hits the club at night and then gets pissed off when he sees me at the grocery store while picking up his muscle killing alchohol and blames steroids for my size and insanely good looks. lol.. Here is a tip dedicate the same amount of time in the kitchen and gym that you do hating and time you spend on your CPU and maybe you can look the way you truly want to deep down inside. I loosley quote Jose Raymond "I call BS on anyone who says there not getting results and declares they are eating and training like an animal". Gabe, I need to disagree with you here...people were eating right and training hard from before the Arnold era!
Hence:
1) The difference in physics is due to drugs... or to be more specific, to the significant increase in drug use (amateur or pro it does not matter).
2) The increase in use of drugs should clearly be considered unhealthy!
I hope you can agree with these 2 very basic statements

His previous comment on facebook (the previous day) was:
"EVERYONE PLEASE DO ME A FAVOR... WEAR A BLACK ARM BAND WHEN YOU WORK OUT TODAY TO REMEMEBER OUT GREAT FRIEND LUKE WOOD THAT PAST AWAY RECENTLY. RIP LUKE. Post your pic for me in his honour..."

Strydom pushed things just like the rest in the 90's did...he just didn't have the same genetic response.
I don't mind the "drugs", just that they're used to destroy physiques, not enhance them in some cases.
Strydom is ONLY saying something negative because he's a has-been with little to show from his time in the game.
He's a bitter man, and that makes his opinions suspect.

I beg to differ , he was 286 pounds , dry as a bone , and should of placed higher .. I respect your opinion on the matter , but he should of been in top 5 , easily . many others felt the same way .. Ask Gary where he thought he should of placed . Perhaps I'm biased or showing my age, but i'm a Strydom fan , and it was great to see him back on stage , looking his best ever , at 48.

Sorry, dude. He wasn't "dry as a bone". And he STILL didn't have a back.
And since bodybuilders are always SO honest about their weight, I buy what the "say" they weight (unless there's a scale present) with a grain of salt.

And since bodybuilders are always SO honest about their weight, I buy what the "say" they weight (unless there's a scale present) with a grain of salt.
"Ask Gary where he thinks he should have placed..."??? I didn't know we were still taking nominations for Asinine Post of the Week.
"Ask Gary"...c'mon, man! Of course he's going to say he should have placed higher. What competitor wouldn't.
He didn't look his "best ever"... That first WBF show was his pinnacle.
Sorry , but that's what he weighed, he was dry as a bone , look at the video, and i was there .. Were you ? no disrespect , but were you ?
In my opinion , He looked as good , if not better than his WBF outing ..
Sorry HHH , that's just how i feel , based on what i saw .

Sorry, dude. He wasn't "dry as a bone". And he STILL didn't have a back.

PS . I do agree his back could have been better , but he was 48 at the time, and it did improve since his last outing ..

I know that things look different in real life than in pics and on video, BUT you're allowing your fan status to override your eyes.
IF he should have been Top 3 or 5, he wouldn't have been in 7th at a 3rd tier show.
You're entitled to your opinion, so I can't argue that.

Compared to the rest of his body, the man had no back.

You could be correct , I'm a Strydom Fan, always have been since late 80's , and he's a friend . But many in attendance believed he should have placed higher, and was one of the best conditioned at the show ..
did you ever see his video, training for that show , it's pretty good .

Gary had some sick taper on him. The ways those delts popped, like banana bunches hanging off the side.
