Believe it or not, it IS a PF. Our gym on Paxton Street is a former World Gym. They took out the power racks and any dumbbell over 75, but other than that, it's 100% and 24/7/365...

another thing along with grip I need to add...

I could use grip work and lower back training. AND a trip to the chiro.

A lottery win wouldn't hurt either.

Get R Done CJ.

Oh, and a 25-hour day! :) Would definitely help get things done. (Or at least give us all an extra hour in the gym.)

musclegoddess65
02-14-2009, 11:08 AM
Yes many times we could use double the 24 hrs we get in one day... but...

grip has GOT to be a regular addition for me... I hate when my hands give out long before the weight gets to heavy... I notice it the most when doing SLDL, and once I can work my way back to doing unassisted pullups, lack of grip is gonna bite me in the ass there too...

I'm with ya on that lottery win...

I say we all pool our bucks if we attend the Arnold, buy a group lottery ticket.. you know how someone from out of town always wins!

GX had or has a mailbox thread and that was one area where I loved to contribute. By absolutely NO DEMAND, I bring you the mailbox post:

Yesterday's mail held the following:

1) February 16, 2009 issue of Sports Illustrated with the cover screaming...

A-ROD
The Latest AND Greatest To Fall

THE BONDS CONNECTION

Rodriguez' face fills the cover.

Apparently he tested positive in 2003. The list was to remain confidential, but, hey... stuff happens, right? :(

2) April 2009 issue of MuscleMag International with Darrem Charles on the cover. Jerry Kindela, formerly of Weider mags, is a consultant for MMI now. I've heard that's a good thing. The man is definitely an experienced author and editor.

3) Notice that Dave Palumbo's Prison Workout and an Rx Muscle t-shirt arrived. Didn't drag myself out before the post office closed, though, so those items are waiting for pick-up next week at some point.

4) I received an order of NitroTech from BB.com. I'm participating in a transformation contest on BodySpace and we were required to purchased a MuscleTech supplement as part of the entry requirements. I remember NitroTech tasting god awful, but the chocolate and their cookies 'n cream are both pretty good.

And, yeah, I did state that I hated the product the first time I used it and that it had been years since I'd purchased NitroTech protein powder.

Guess what, no one deleted the post. ;)

5) In the bb.com box there was also a free sample pack of fruit punch blast SuperPump250 (which I requested) and

6) a free sample pack of MyoShock, MuscleTech's new pre-workout product (which I had not requested).

MuscleTech sure knows their advertising, I'm telling you. The sample pack came with a slick tri-fold ad. Full-color, ingredient list, photo of Dex, and those descriptive graphics intended to explain what the product does.

Forgive me if I missed it, but do you take every set to failure or just the last ? What are your rep tempos ?

I have been completing a drop-set on my last set of inclines, but with this volume workout it certainly wasn't all to failure. The rep tempo for this workout was strict and fairly slow. I was working lighter and paying attention to squeezing the reps and really feeling it.

There is no such thing as too much cardio... it might not be super productive for muscle building but I think both you and I have long since realized we are not going to be shaking up the ranks of the NPC or IFBB in our lifetime. Drop your sets/reps to 4 x 6-8 and up your weight. The volume is too much for you. NOT to much on the muscles but obviously too much on your back so learn to manage the exercise... and at 180reps, I know you can drop the volume and add weight, your muscles will benefit from the increased weight while your back will thank you the next day.

Don't you keep your butt in the seat when leg pressing?

Exactly. Plant those hips back into the pad.

The volume at that weight was too much. I goofed up. Was pyramiding but should have topped out at four plates per side or maybe even the three and done the 12 sets. I was thinking along the lines of a high volume "rest" from the heavier 5 pps work, but added the plates rather than sticking with my plan.

Thanks for the advice, Steve. A 4 x 6-8 approach is what I had been doing. More along the lines of Jason Ferruggia's program (which I had been working).

Nic, I honestly do. Steve, you saw my video at some point in the past and noted that I was lifting out of the seat. I've made certain that I stay planted on your recommendation. Just went too heavy (for me) for that many sets obviously. :-/

Even if you keep your hips back, leg presses can still strain lower back. Usually you'd only notice if you have a pre-existing condition and so for alot of people leg press is a-ok.

The reason they still strain low back is that at all points in the movement your hips are flexed. Unlike a Squat or a Hack machine where your hips are fully extended (ie you are standing upright/ torso and legs in straight line) at the top of the movement, leg press keeps an angle between torso and thighs at all times.

The angle gets more or less extreme through the range of motion but there is always flexion. Thus, there is pressure/strain on the low back throughout every rep of every set with no relief. The pressure is not as extreme as it would be if you Squatted with forward flexion but it is enough to 'mysteriously strain' your low back.

Note: there ARE many different styles of leg press, but most are at some angle and thus do not mimic the natural squatting motion well. There are machines that do this though, I don't want to paint all machines with the same brush of judgement =P

What are you hitting today? Taking it easy can be pretty effective, especially if it gets you back in the gym. Just tell everyone you're taking advantage of advanced super-compensation window techniques! ;)

I did chest and not much else. Will post up momentarily, but this was not a session to impress. Glad to be back in the gym, though. Honestly, I wasn't seeking any kind of pity party whatsoever. I'm fine. Was fine. Will continue to be fine.

Fine!

All is well here, busy. Cycling season is in full swing. Man, I tell you what, it aint easy trying to put on weight in my legs when I gotta cycle all the time. But I am not complaining either cause it is fun.

She is with the new team now so it's kinda like her first show all over again as she is not sure what to expect with her cut. It was. I spent a few hours at Gold's. Got to catch up with a friend there and got in a decent workout. Yesterday was supposed to be back and triceps, but I went home directly from work for a nap.

A nap that turned into several hours of rest. Guess I had/have a mild version of whatever's going around. Or, yeah, maybe I just needed the sleep. Made up for the workout this afternoon.

Heading out to see Watchmen (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0409459/)with my training partner next. Going for a meal and then the movie. His wifey gave him permission. :D

How was Watchmen? I've heard it was good but cut alot of the book out.

It's been years since I've read the graphic novel, but I thought the movie was very true to the comics. Black Freighter is apparently being released as its own DVD.

Man, I loved the movie. It's definitely one to own. I don't want to say much at the risk of spoiling it for someone. Hell, I was deliberately avoiding all mention of the flick online, in the newspaper, etc. Even though I knew the comic more or less (again, been years and my memory is crrrrap!) I still didn't want to know anything about possible changes for the movie.

Anyway, I loved it. Awesome!

Toney Freeman did an interview somewhere recently and said that fully pronating and supinating really helped heal his arms or ease any pain in the biceps or forearms related to his curls.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v108/curt_james/Rx/adbc.gif

That animated gif shows a portion of the movement. Doing them the way they were described by Freeman, I rotate my wrist at the bottom of the movement so my palms are facing the wall behind me.

Can anyone picture that? It's just turning your hands a bit more, but according to Freeman it works the muscles that are missed if you don't.

I forgot about the mermaid, but that was the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride? Man, that was a great time. I was there at around age 12 or 13 with a group of newspaper boys. lol :) And then with my high school friends at 17.

gman, I just noticed your avatar. LMAO! :D

It's always good to be a card carrying member of the Int. Chest Day is Monday Society, even if you -secretly- end up working chest on another day. In some countries it's a felony to do anything else! Lucky for me it's only a minor offence in Canada.

Never heard of that supinating/pronating trick Freeman mentioned but one of the functions of the biceps is rotating the wrist so this would make you use a full range of motion for that particular function. And full range of motion is important for flexibility, it might even prevent the injuries he's talking about. Although I'm not sure exactly what he is talking about. The only bicep/forearm pain I get doing curls is the GOOD kind.

I'll be 47 in August and haven't been there since I was 17. Time for a return visit. :D

My favorite ride was the Haunted Mansion. Just love that thing. There was a part where you looked in a mirror during the ride and a ghost was projected into the seat next to you. :p

I loove Disney. Took the kids in '07 and can't wait to go back... Pirates Of The Carribean is awesome...

It's the details of the eating plan I'm currently following.

Very convenient for someone like me. I don't have a big appetite and am not keen on counting meals or dealing with macros.

Gotta admit, I actually gained weight this week, but I think that obviously relates to the fact that I dropped cardio and increased my food intake in response to losing more than two pounds the previous week.

I want to lean out a bit, but I'm not interested in stripping unnecessary weight. I'll get my one meal per day down to a science and begin to lose about a pound a week. That's the goal.

Since a few people have asked me for specifics on my cutting diet, here's a roundup of my method:

I made sure to get 1g/lb LBM of daily protein in, by simply sipping on a 100g whey protein shake during the day. The rest of my protein needs were easily met with solid food. I didn't take any other supplements.

During the week the diet looked like this: In the morning I only drank a little healthy oil. I ate out for lunch, basically whatever I wanted. I only made sure to get about 50g of protein in as well as some fruits and vegetables to meet the basic nutritional requirements. I would e.g. eat at a chinese buffet, greek restaurant, etc. As far as caloric restriction goes, I went by experience. I can easily get a full stomach at lunch while still losing about 1-2lb a week. In the beginning of the diet, when I was very hungry in the evening, I ate a little snack (e.g. a banana or some ice cream). If I felt like it, I drank 1-3 glasses of red wine.

On saturday, I tried to get other foods in, which I mostly prepared myself, like eggs, multi-grain bread, steak, etc. but still trying to have the same caloric restrictions as during the week. I also again took in 100g of whey protein.

On most sundays (if I thought progress allowed it), I had no restriction on food intake at all. I ate as much and whatever I like. The only rule again was protein intake. If not met with solid food I added some whey accordingly. I also drank beer or red wine if I felt like it.

As far as training goes, I train heavy 3 times a week, split training, about 90min. I usually train 3h after lunch if possible, simply because I feel best at that time. I don't do any cardio.

I have tried many other approaches in the past, always trying to simplify the set of needed rules. This is the first time, I got rid of all 5 "myths": meal frequency, macro composition, cardio, alcohol, supps. So far, it has been the best cutting diet I ever did. :)

Well, in that case I now count myself as an ICDIMS member!

Wish I could say the same about curl pain. I'm a long-time sufferer of tennis elbow-like aches.

To be fair you have a head start on me. I could have crap elbows in 20 years and then we'd be even! =P Have you tried the Freeman Curl yet? Any results?

Curt, you totally ignored my post #210, no response at all from you. I can only assume you have been too busy over on MD in the "Arnold Classic FBB Thread". :p

... that thread is all over the place, pretty funny stuff actually ...

Question for you thou, my opinion is that SR's response to the judging was pretty poor. He should have stood up for the Heavy. I tend to agree with NF. Now the way NF took on SR was a bit childish and both could have handled it better but SR is living in lala land in regards to the results and NF is calling a spade a spade. So my question to you is do you agree with NF but just don't like him and his methods/actions etc... think he is a jerk etc... (which I get) or do you actually agree with SR. SR said something in one of his posts that unless we where sitting in the judges seats, we really can't say what the judges actually saw or something to that effect. Come on. The guy is playing some political BS game. Just wondering what your actual take is on the issue.

Training is going good I assume?

I am side lined from the contest wioth injury at the moment but I am still bulking .... right around the mid section:p:D.

I'll check #210 out immediately.

haHA :p Yes, I've been there.

I'll agree that it's "all over the place," but I'm missing the humor.

Mostly. :)

Noel is a judge, isn't he? As such he probably has a more appropriate venue than a message board to vent his dissatisfaction.

Now the way NF took on SR was a bit childish and both could have handled it better but SR is living in lala land in regards to the results and NF is calling a spade a spade.

Fuller wasn't childish as much as inappropriate and rude.

And the placing should come as no surprise as they've been preaching sleeker and slimmer (and prettier) for some time now.

I disagree with the entire concept of "pretty" wrt rewarding physique competitors, however downsizing and softening is something that is being pushed by the powers that be.

It's no secret. I posted at least one video of an interview where it's clearly spelled out.

So my question to you is do you agree with NF but just don't like him and his methods/actions etc... think he is a jerk etc... (which I get) or do you actually agree with SR.

NF was a jerk. There's no question on that count, imo.

And if Ray stated that the judges are making a statement then I agree.

The judges WERE making a statement. The appropriate response would have been to dispute that statement while showing respect for both athletes.

NF failed miserably on that count. Again, imo.

SR said something in one of his posts that unless we where sitting in the judges seats, we really can't say what the judges actually saw or something to that effect. Come on. The guy is playing some political BS game.

Shawn is Shawn.

More coming. Brb.

Good to see another old man training hard, not that I am training hard myself.

Just wondering what your actual take is on the issue.

I like Elena's look over Maria's. Period. No sense to pick the two athletes apart, but none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger stated years ago that he would choose as the winner who he would most like to look like.

That's Shportun.

Someone in the MD thread mentioned the result being "political". Do you know who Shportun's husband is?

Look into that if you're a conspiracy theorist.

Training is going good I assume?

My lower back is not what it could be, but I won't complain to you since I read your journal about you're back blowing up. :(

I am side lined from the contest wioth injury at the moment but I am still bulking .... right around the mid section:p:D.

Have you checked in with an orthopedic surgeon or a chiropractor? :(

Or (hopefully) was it a false alarm?

I'm considering or interested in therapeutic massage, pilates, more chiro, and, duh, some x-rays. I have sporadic pain. Nothing serious, but it's not "right."

Get checked ASAP, good sir.

Oh, and not to blow smoke, Fuller was an asshole. Telling people to teabag him and then ending by telling me to take a walk and find a girlfriend.

Wtf?
