I had started this thread before in another life and it became very popular. With hardcore gyms becoming less and less abundant in favor of highly commercialized "health clubs" I thought we as a group should stick together and make those last bastions of hardcore known. I invite you to list the gyms you know to be hardcore here on this thread. You must have first hand experience that the gym is hardcore - no third hand information. List the gym name, address, website if any, a description, and you can even pst some pics.

Every so often Sally Anne will take the names and add them to her Hardcore Gym Registry Search Engine. All you have to do is type in your zip code - or the zip code you're visiting - and the nearest hardcore gym to you will pop up. It's a great resource!

I'm not too sure about names, but I noticed a dude from the gym competed in the Arnold 2002 powerlifting contest. I'll be more observant next time and get names.

It's a typical hardcore gym with rusty old weight, chipped machines, part cement floors and big ass fucking weights lying about everywhere.

Top Hardcore gym for me is Diamond Gym in Maplewood NJ. Me and my wife trained with John Kemper for about a year there. We'd go once or twice a week and had the best workouts ever. Nothing like hardcore rap, no fancy equipment and several big hardcore people throwing weights around. You'd even see the occasional house arrest bracelett here and there LOL. Bad ass place.

Worlds gym sacto is the closest thing to old school gym i found in town, old machines, dumbbellas go to 150 i think at least, they dont fit on the rak only up to 120 on the rack bout 10 db on the floor, only thing is, its not very busy, kinda like a library other than a few guys, the owner doesnt liek loud noises.................... :(

If you're looking for a gym that caters to the insecurities of their clients go to GOLD's GYM 66th st. N. Pinellas Park, FL. THIS IS NOT A HARDCORE GYM! The owner himself hit me up right after leg pressing 22 plates, deep, and did a passive aggressive move telling me to stop "grunting and groaning because people tell him they won't workout at his gym if they see people moving that kind of weight and making that kind of noise." We asked him if he was serious and he was. I gotta admit, at first I thought he was going to congratulate me for putting out the effort. Powerlifting center for the region holding meets regularly. Plenty of weights, dumbbells up to 120s with several pairs. Two power racks, any machine you may want or need. Plus they just received a huge private donation this last year so the place has been completely renovated and most of the equipment is brand new!

golds is still golds, many will say its not the same as it was in early 90s but its still one hell of a gym, equipment coming out of its eye balls. music sucks though so bring your Ipod if you can. my gym is la fitness but every so often ill drive into venice for a session at golds. will be doing one this week some time. (yes my profile says im irish but im living in hollywood at the moment.)

Great atmosphere, Dumbells up to 150, decent amount of equipment and they play hard rock (metallica ac/dc etc) in the weight room

We've two racks, Atlas stones from 50-kilos to 251-kilos (as well as two purpose built platforms just arrived). Dumbbells from small loadable ones to one 150-kilos / 330lbs monster (1 of 3 in the UK), 3 thick handled globe dumbbells ('Baby' Inch, Inch and a Millennium), 1000++ kilos of Olympic discs and 500-600 of standard discs. 40+ hand grippers (like Captains of Crush but all makes), bench press bench, assorted bars inc some custom made. Lat pulldown (300+lbs), low row (loadable to 440+lbs), leg extension (300+ stack - to which we pin weight), Leg Press, Leg curl, farmers walk set ups, two 'super yokes'. And a bunch of stuff I can't be borthered typing in. ;)

What makes a gym hardcore?

It's almost an intangible thing, hard to put a finger on. It doesn't need to be a cob webbed dungeon and there might even be a bit of chrome in there. Indeed, having had this very debate with a local he argued that the local branch of Fitness First (big chain of gyms here in the UK) had 'some elite athletes using it'. I rebutted with 'yeah but I'd get my ass handed to me on the way out if I pinned weights to the stacks to try and get a sweat going'.

Romano et al have also suggested that places where grunting with effort (not over cooked as some do to give a good impression but with real need as they max out) is frowned upon is not hardcore.

It might be that there is enough weight to max out most bars in the gym. Seeing a leg press with longer than usual loading pins, seeing special equipment (Texas power bar for example), chalk not being an issue and so on may all indicate something of a hardcore feel to a place.

But it's probably as much about the owner, the athletes using it and the essence/atmosphere, as anything. If said owner screams from across the 'was that it pussy' when he thought you slacked off, when you walk in and every crew in there has 'it going on' and when you can actually see some of the kind of kit you'd want in it if you owned the place (I do :D)... those are probably indicators of it being all that and then some.
