It's a bad idea because drugs can be both harmful and dangerous. It's not just that some drugs can kill - whether directly or indirectly - but also because using drugs:

Can damage our physical, mental and spiritual health.
Can lead to chemical dependence.
Can cause some people to become preoccupied with using - with harmful consequences for other aspects of their life.
Can lead to isolation, loss of motivation, violent or criminal behavior.
Can cause individuals to become selfish, uncaring about others - including family members;
Can affect our judgment - leading to accidents etc.
Can harm other people - particularly within the family.
Can force people to lie, to deceive, to cheat and to steal.
Can result in loss of natural self-esteem.
Can cause others to lose respect for the drug abuser.

The most dangerous aspect of drug abuse is that it can lead to a loss of control. This can mean using more and more of a particular drug, or using more and more powerful drugs. It can mean that drugs become the most important thing in a persons life.

There's an old saying which describes this:
(please excuse the 'man' - of course this can equally well be 'woman')

The man takes a drug. Then the drug takes a drug.
Then the drug takes the man.

Basically this says that drug use may start off as fun, then becomes a habit, then becomes an addiction. No amount of will power can stop this process once it takes hold.

Not everyone who tries drugs becomes dependent on them. But a lot of people do.

This can range from casual drug abuse - e.g. not feeling able to go to a social function without drinking alcohol, to habitual abuse - where getting and taking the drug of choice take precedence over everything else.

Both types of drug abuse demonstrate a dependence - it's just that one is usually more visible than the other.
The problem is that you don't find out if you have become dependent until it's too late. It's like Russian Roulette - no-one knows who will get shot, but we know for certain that someone will!

Playing Russian Roulette is stupid and it's dangerous - it's not a good idea!
