It's been quite a while, I registered here on this great site well over a year ago and just now I came across it again and was kicking myself for not participating in it. Let me just say how much respect I have for the great Dave Palumbo and all the admins of this great site, it is really put together nicely. To all the members here, it is an honor to be in a place where everybody shares the same goals, support each other and respect one another as athletes. Great forum categories and when I saw Men's Physique Discussion I thought I would leave a quick post. I am competing in 2 days, this Sunday, at the NPC Jay Cutler Classic in the Men's Physique Division. It is going to be held in Boston, Massachusetts. Should be a great show, everybody I talk to say it's a big one, being run by former Mr. Olympia himself Jay Cutler. Jay is an amazing athlete and it will be great to just be a part of such an event. Maybe some of you guys know as I am a bit unfamiliar with the rules of NPC Men's Physique. I am 37 years old, people have told me their cut off is always 35 years old in Physique for Master level. With that being said I could compete in the Open Class and the Masters Class....do a cross over. Is this true, if any discussion could shed some light on this it would be right here. My attitude is 100% respect for all the competitors at the Jay Cutler Classic! The discipline and focus it takes all the athletes to get to that that stage is incredible. Below is a photo of me taken last week at a gym shoot at Total Fitzness Gym in Wolcott, Connecticut. I would like to personally thank Dave "Fitz Fitzpatrick for being so cool and allowing the shoot. dave came back to compete in a bodybuilding show recently after a near fatal car accident where he was in a coma for 24 days and paralyzed. Your story is a true inspiration and I appreciate you saying you will be there at the show pulling for me, means a lot! Ok everybody, there are so many great people like Dave in this business and I thanks all of you for that! Great to be back on here...when I can (3 little children with lots of diaper changings might not let me that much, ha ha ha!!!!!)

I would be happy to give you some input on your question for deeper abs but first things first...What is your current ab/oblique training routine?

Tiger5679
06-03-2012, 10:15 AM
SVT04DAL that means a lot thanks. My diet has been good and I am doing mostly crunches...weighted and non-weighted. Various different angles, standard style crunches and using the tricep pulley doing reverse crunches (hands behind my head) crunching towards the floor weighted. Any imput would be appreciated for sure, thanks man! Much respect for you and this great site!

Here are some on stage images from the 2012 NPC Atlantic States Men's Physique Competition in New York and a few images from the photo shoot that followed. Just told my placing was 11th out of 14. I was never one to make excuses. I will try to do my best this coming week June 9th at the NPC Rhode Island show at Twin Rivers Casino. Even though I am not happy with my placing I still have 100% respect for all my fellow competitors, the judges and the NPC organization. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to compete in your amazing shows as I am honored to just be on the same stage with such incredible athletes. Thank you & God Bless

look grainy man! What was your carb up like?

Tiger5679
06-05-2012, 09:19 AM
No problem Lance Adam, my carb up choice was sweet potatoes. I bake them in the oven and they taste damn good. Every 2-3 hours I have one with some grilled chicken or egg whites. Pretty basic my friend. Some guys use rice and other things, whatever works for you and as you experiment you find over time what works best for you. Thanks buddy.

I would just keep things simple. Abs are like calves and are determined greatly by genetics. Most people tend to overtrain them. My routine looks like this during pre-contest:

3 sets of kneeling cable rope crunches
100 x 34
110 x 33
110 x 33

Hanging leg raises
x 20
x 20
x 20

Cable oblique Twists (sets are for each side of the body)
30 x 20
40 x 20
50 x 20

Seated Oblique Stick twists superset with db side crunches
x 34 + 35 x 10 x 3 sets

I also will throw in some bench leg raises from time to time.

Best of luck to you at the NPC RI...that was the first show I competed in last year.

Thanks for the kind words, they mean a lot! I just wanted to say what an honor it was to win the 2012NPC Rhode Island State Men’s Physique competition this past night on June 9th.I took 1st place in the under 5’10” class. There was some great talent in mygroup and I have nothing but the utmost respect for these guys. I would like topersonally thank the NPC organization and everybody who helped put this eventtogether. Each and every time I have competed at an NPC event the people whohave ran each one have all been so very nice to me that truly I can’t sayenough great things about them all. One of the head guys, Mike Feulner, verynice to me every time I have communicated with him…..a real professional and aperson I have great respect for. I met and became friends with some amazingathletes who competed at this show. I would like to say for the record I hadthe privilege of meeting Bob Cicherillo who was the MC for the event. Greatguy, very down to earth super cool! I also met Branch Warren who was veryfriendly. Branch is an amazing athlete and a top notch human being. Anall-around great night! Here are a few photos from the show and from the photoshoot I had earlier in the day. Thank You & God Bless

Hey SVT04DAL...that's great my friend, you should do great at the Team U in Jersey. I qualified for the Team U so I will be competing as well. I have to be honest bro, I am a humble guy and am just honored to be on the same stage as these amazing athletes! I would love to do well for sure but as people have told me just competing on stage at this great event is something to be proud of. Can't say enough about the NPC, great people all across the board and when I look around when I am competing at an event there is no place in the world where every person has the same passion to compete as I do :) I will do my best bro and wish you all the luck in the world at the Team U as well, I will say a prayer to the good Lord above to watch over me and make it respectable. Thanks Bro! My friend sent me this photo taken at the Rhode Island show of me and Branch Warren, great guy...very nice! All the respect in the world for this guy. Yeah, Saturday was an all around great day. I would just like to thank everybody from the 2012 NPC Rhode Island one more time, such great event! It was an honor winning the Men’sPhysique under 5’10” class capped off getting photographed with Branch Warren. God Bless

Best of luck to you as well! Great attitude brother! I'll be competing in the over 5'10" class (I'm 6'1") so at least we won't be competing directly with eachother unless it's for the Overall (one can only hope!). My Wife is pregnant with our first child so I am hoping that by earning my pro card I can in turn start making some extra cash on the side from all this.

Good luck with prep and I'll be sure to keep an eye out for you down in Jersey...I'm Dave by the way.

Greatest thing in my life is my kids bro, you will find out soon enough the joy he or she will bring you. Yeah, at the Team U if you see me just come over and say you are Dave from RX Muscle, ha ha ha and I will know exactly who you are. Thanks man! Yeah, pinch me I'm dreaming that I will competing for the Team U Men's Physique Overall. Gonna do the best I can bro, hopefully make my 2 young sons proud of their dad years from now when they look back on me. Enjoy your day Big Dave!

Yesterday I had a nice conversation with a friend ofmine. We talked about everything from my family to my training for my upcomingcompetitions. One of the things she said to me really hit home and Iappreciated her saying this....she said, "John, I really wish you well inyour upcoming contests in July. Not only am I speaking for myself but for themany people I have been talking with about you. We all agree you are the kindof person we all want to see do well because you are a good person with a bigheart and one who is respectful of others WITHOUT an ego." Thank youHeather, I really appreciated your kind words and was humbled by the way othersfeel about me. I will certainly do my best, I will give it my all for sure :)She then asked me another question, "So what are you gonna do if you winany of these shows?" I have to be honest here everybody, I am just happyto be going to these amazing events. I am not a flashy guy and I try not tobring unwanted attention to myself. Being part of these 3 amazing upcomingcontests is really something in itself. The 3 competitions I will be competingin are: Men's Physique Division for NPC Team Universe in New Jersey (July 6-7),NPC Master's Men's Physique in Pittsburgh (July 20-21) and the NPC USA's Men'sPhysique in Las Vegas (July 27-28). So here is the answer (summed up) that Igave her.....

"Heather, when I look at these 3 shows I will becompeting in the first thing I have to say is what amazing company to be in.The talent at all 3 is quite remarkable. Being my age what it is I have themind set to have so much appreciation for all of those in the NPC who put theseamazing events together. For all their time and efforts that they put intothese shows to make them all so successful is something to be so very thankfulfor. If it weren't for people in the NPC like Bev Francis and Big Mike Feulner, just to name a few, all of us athletes wouldn't have these great platforms toshowcase out talents. It has been an honor competing with the NPC this year; Ihave 100% for everybody in this amazing organization across the board: everyathlete that steps on stage for their efforts and dedication, my fellowPhysique competitors and all the judges. Everybody in the NPC has always beenso very nice to me that win, lose or draw the entire experience has been topnotch. If I really have to analyze these 3 contests, the first, TeamUniverse....I am just happy to be part of it with so many great Men's Physiquecompetitors. I will try my best to make it respectable :) My friend AntonAntipov has been winning like crazy so maybe he will give me a few pieces ofadvice that I am more than willing to listen to (this is an ego free zone myfriends, I leave that at the door but I never had one anyway but you all getthe point). The last show, the NPC USA's Men's Physique Division, they tell meit consists of the 1st and 2nd place finishers only in each Men's Physiquecontest only. I placed 1st in the NPC Rhode Island Men's Physique (under5'10" Division)....my real height is 5'9" so I qualified for thisshow. I never thought I would be going to this show. Hell, I will take the 1stplace finish and run before somebody steals it from me, ha ha ha! Just being onstage at the Men's Physique USA's is a victory for me my friends, what amazingcompany to be in there. So to sum up the USA's, just going is something to beproud of and I will do my best to make it as respectable as I can Heather. Itouched upon the 1st and last show before the 2nd one as my goals for these 2are basically the same...make it respectable. Now the 2nd show, the NPCPhysique Masters in Pittsburgh. It is being put on as I am told by a guy namedGary Udit. I have never had the privilege of meeting hum but from what I haveread about him I would be honored. Definitely a man who has my 100% respect.Seems like a great show, Master's Men's Physique Division 35-40 years old.Heather, I might actually have a good chance at placing in this one. That wouldbe something! She was giving me that look kind of grinning at me and I knewwhat she was thinking. Yeah, ok, me....1st place? Girl, if I won 1st place inthis division I would probably hit the floor and need to be carted off thestage on a stretcher then when I came too pinch me and say it's not a dream. You get my point, I would be the most honored winner in the history of thesport! I will do my best Heather and I can live with that."

Much Love & Respect :)

God Bless

Thanks so much man, I wish you the best at the Team U as well. If I were able to walk away from this contest with a Pro card I could honestly say I would be the happiest man alive. Thinking back over the years all of the things giving up everything for the fitness world and athletics. Man, I gave up family relationships for it and remember going out to my car during cookouts while training and drinking those chalky protein shakes years ago while everybody else was "partying". But I have to be honest with you, I love the sport to much, I respect everybody in it too much and those involved that share the same passion that I have had for over 20 years. It's like I have the same attitude about this as Ray Liotta had as Shoeless Joe Jackson in the movie, "Field of Dreams" when he said......he was grateful to be playing the game he loves. ''I'd have played for food money,'' he says, ''I'd have played for nothing." I reflect a bit when I think back to his statement, after 20 years that's what I have been doing......Pro Card, there are so many amazing athletes that I see who deserve that honor! I am just thankful you included me in that sentence bro! God Bless :)

I know I have said these same things I am about to write at this moment before and in a previous post but I just wanted to thank the NPC for making the 2012 Team Universe Weekend 2 great shows one more time. Oh, and before I forget, I would like to personally thank David Lees who competed at the Team Universe Men’s Physique. I was hanging out with Dave and a few of his friends who run a forum on Muscular Development before we hit the stage for the finals. David Lees is a true professional with a great attitude, very humble and respectful. Strong with great musculature….a great physique! Congrats Dave to you and your wife on expecting your baby girl in October. May God watch over you and your family always. I really enjoyed competing in the Men's Physique Class B this past weekend in Teaneck, New Jersey, I gave it my best and I have much respect for everybody involved. All the classes had some of the best physique's....these guys are all warriors and I have 100% respect for each and every one of my fellow competitors. A couple days ago, the Tuesday after the show (July 10th) my back felt broken, I had a migraine headache. I feel thin and more tired than usual. I haven't had any junk food since New Year’s Eve. I have 2 more NPC Physique shows in July before I take time to be with my little children, be dad again. I feel like the boxer that is just trying to make it through the 12th round without getting knocked out. Stay focused and don't give up is what I say to myself over and over lately. July 20-21st, I am competing in the NPC Master Physique 35-40 years old in Pittsburgh. The show is being run by a gentleman named Gary Udit, I don’t personally know him but from what I have read about him he is a man that I respect very much. I have competed against mainly younger guys in their 20’s in all of the previous shows, some of which based on age could even be my son which is really something when I think about it seeing as I turn 38 years old in October. I read there are going to be 3 classes at this show for Master Physique 35-40: Up to 5’10”, 5’10” to 6’0 and 6’0 and up. I am 5’9” so it looks like I will be in the first class. I was told the winner of his class at this show gets his pro card. For what it's worth if this broken down guy with the heart of a warrior could win first place in his Master’s class and earn his pro card I would probably drop to the floor and cry. A pro....it would really be the "icing on the cake" after over 2 decades of training, running in snow storms and for those who really know me eating the same damn thing day in and day out without giving up. To win my class at the NPC Masters Physique on July 20-21st in Pittsburgh would be the dream. I would be the most appreciative damn champion there ever was! May God watch over me & my fellow competitors and keep everybody safe. Thank you again everybody for making my NPC experience this year truly amazing! God Bless

John, it was an HONOR meeting and hanging with you bro. You looked fantastic but more importantly you have a perspective and attitude that is very refreshing in this sport. You wear your heart on your sleeve (a lot like me) and your positive influence is tremendous! Thank you so much for the kind words and well wishes and of course, best of luck in Puittsburgh...I hope and pray that you come home with that IFBB Pro card big dog!

On another note, were you able to find out where to get feedback from the NPC Officials/judges that were at the show? I sent an email to Steve via the Bev Francis website but so far no response.

13 guys, I am not one to make excuses big dog, just gonna try my best this weekend at the USA's in Las Vegas. I think the real sign of a man is one who never complains, just go back and try hard all over again. That has always been my philosophy. Who knows, maybe I will suprise myself this weekend. Thanks man!

Special thanks to Ms. Diesel K. for adding a video of me this morning to YouTube. It is a clip from back in June the night before the 2012 NPC Atlantic States competition. I competed in the Men's Physique Division at this show and they broke a record with almost 400 competitors. This show was put on by Bev Francis and her husband Steve Weinberger. I had the honor of meeting both of them and they are wonderful good people. Much respect for the NPC and all the athletes, God Bless :)

OK, just for the record everybody and their mother keeps asking me over and over again how many tattoos I have and what they are. Well, here it goes to set the record straight.

•Japanese theme half sleeve on upper right arm
•Celtic sun cross on middle upper back
•Tribal bracelet with barbed wire around right wrist
•Kanji "Strength" symbol on inner right forearm
•Kanji "Tranquility" symbol on inner right forearm
•Celtic high cross with banner on upper left back
•Kanji "Happiness" symbol on upper right back
•Celtic Rock of Cashel cross on upper right back
•Kanji "Hope" symbol on upper left back
•Chrome and black "Godsmack" tribal sun symbol around navel
•"Medusa" theme half sleeve on upper left arm
•Kanji "Courage" symbol on lower left abdomen
•Kanji "Family" symbol inside left wrist
•Tribal shamrock on right ring finger
•Kanji "Perseverance" symbol on right ring finger

So as you can see I have 15 individual tattoos which are all either Irish or Oriental. All of the symbols have deep meaning to me and describe my life and what things I feel are important to me to live a rich and full life. I have always been a person that I would call unique as I have never copied anybody and have always done things my way as crazy as that may sound because I thought it was for the best at that given time. My advice to anybody reading this post is to just be yourself and if people choose to judge you for the wrong reasons just ignore it as life is too short to sweat the small stuff. Thank you & God Bless Always :) I guess I will just post the additional photos in a couple of posts below so there aren't too many images in this one post. Thanks

Just thought I would post this here since it is very cool of her to pick me, so the hell with it…here goes: I was notified yesterday and I would like to personally thank romance writer/author Celia Kyle for selecting me as her book cover model for her upcoming novel, 'Fierce In Fur' which is due out in October/November :) I am honored and humbled. If somebody years ago said I would be a cover model for romance novels I would have told them they were crazy, it’s all good. Thank you and God Bless always.

Every couple of days or so I will try and get on here to add links to a few more until I have covered them all. Much appreciated.
