Thanks to Malika for taking time to answer these questions!
You've won stacks of titles, but never really went for the IFBB pro card route. Why did you never and is that any thing you may look for in the future?
I always liked the look of Nabba Figure competitors: the criteria are very different than IFBB Figure. I get the chance to display my hard work not only by doing ¼ turns on stage, but also by having to perform 5 compulsory poses & a routine.
After I won my class at the Nabba Universe twice (2006-07) & won the Nabba World (2007), moving to IFBB crossed my mind, but I don’t feel that the criteria suit my physique. I follow Pro Figure shows, & looking at the way it’s moving toward to, I don’t feel I could fit in: the girls have less muscle & come much softer then at the start when the class was introduced.
Posing routines, as a figure competitor you do them whereas North Americans don't. Which way, if any, do you think is best?
I like dancing so I don’t mind having to do a routine, but I know some fellow competitors who could do without having to perform the 60 sec on stage on their own!
I feel like doing a posing routine reflects my personality & character, which helps me stand out from other competitors, & also allow me to display my flexibility & agility on stage.
Glutes, I have to go here, yours are great. What in particular do you do for them training wise?
I get a lot of girls emailing me asking the same question!
I particularly isolate the muscles using heavy ankle-weights, on my four on a bench or the floor, performing different exercises until failure.
Walking lunges with dumbbells & stationary lunges with the front foot on a high step(I use the smith machine) are great to bring out definition on the glutes/hams tie in.
Also partial Stiff legged dead-lifts are fantastic to hit the glutes: I often superset them with glutes kick-back!
Glutes machines are very good too, I got one for my gym last year, but they are not necessary as I built size using ankle-weights!
Low carb/keto or med carb diet debates have been raging around on the net lately. What diet style do you use?
I have tried different diet, & the very low carb/medium fat/high protein is what works for me. I have no problem training & doing cardio 7 days/week without any starchy carbs, as long as I have enough healthy fats in my diet!
Can you tell us a little about the general Irish bodybuilding scene? What feds are dominant, divisions, opportunities etc?
For years the two main federations in Ireland were IFBB & NABBA.
The standard has been progressively getting stronger over the last 10 years with some competitors from North & South winning major titles.
Because of the increase of competitions, new supplement companies & better coverage in Ireland, there’s more opportunity for bodybuilders to be sponsored & noticed on the international scene.
