50 year old former competitor (bodybuilding, powerlifting, and olympic lifting), who will turn 51 in July and looking at competing in either masters mens physique and or masters bodybuilding. Started on 2/27/2012 @ 195.5 and 12.5 %....down to 184.5 and 8.5% as of 5/29/2012. Looking at a show in Wichita at the end of July and the Warrior Classic in August in Colorado. Biggest drawback, in 2000, underwent abdominal surgery, so I ended up with a nastly looking scar (but found out the other night that I can easily conceal with makeup) but dealing with a small hernia that I have to figure out what to do with.

This was a quickie leg workout, short on time. Cardio tonight, elliptical trainer with light resistance for 50 mins.

Vertical leg raise
20 reps each for 4 rounds

Occlusion training for Arms in the late PM with 30 mins cardio (elliptical)

Banded upper arm and performed back to back sets of Band pressdowns to failure and Bicep curl with Olympic bar only till failure...ended up with about 6 sets back and forth until arms were swollen to the point of discomfort.

Looks like Heat versue OKC.....go Thunder

I like this movement. Using the SSQTBAR, you can utilize a more upright oly style squat. Combining the bands, you get a nice deload at the bottom, and a nice increase in load as you ascend to the top position.

Felt weak as shit, but bodyfat is dropping and I have no major aches and pains right now (just the usual) Another thing, Physique and or Bodybuilding is truly about the illusion. I am currently 20lbs+ below my normal walking around weight, and my kids friends are commenting to them that "your dad is really looking jacked." That is funny.

2001 USAPL Midwest states, placed 3rd in 220lb open class. Turned 40 and was a year out from major abdominal surgery. Did this meet to prove I could still move some iron. Weighed around 210.

Injured my lower back this morning working with a client. This happens every few months. Have to baby it for awhile or it will not heal up. I have 4-5 bad disks (lost count) so this is something I just deal with. Bring on the ice/heat/motrin! Because of f'd lower back, no vertical loading on spine!

So far today.....

Training of clients at two locations, then out to train wife at NTC. While there, did a little ab workout and 45 mins of Tmill. Checking HR...I need to bump this up. Have HR monitor at home and will strap on and use. As soon as I got home, grabbed a kettlebell and headed out to the back yard and did....

25 KB swings (50lb) and 200 feet prowler push (unloaded, pushing on grass) repeat for 4 rounds.

Back injury feeling pretty good. Yesterday could not walk upright, slept on floor last night, and dropped some ibuprofen and on my way to recovery today.

Tonight, plan on another 45 mins at the right THRZ applicable to me!

Last night before cardio performed the occlusion arm training, which basically entails wrapping a light band around the top of the bodypart that you would like to work, and perform several light pumping sets until you cannot take the fatigue/pain anymore. Did this with arms and used a tricep pressdown and cable curl with 30lbs each and pumped until felt like arms would pop. I have read this stuff (mostly by layne norton phd) about this type of training and thought I would give it a try with arms and see what if any result occurred. Olympic swimmer Dara Torres is also utilizing this type of training to prepare for another run at the 2012 games at 40 plus years of age. My only concern with this type of training is any potential clotting that may occur.

Today is Fathers day, and a happy one to all. Did an hour walk with my wife this morning, and will do a high rep ab workout and 45 mins cardio at 120bpm thrz on tmill or elliptical. Put batteries in my HR monitor and want to see exactly what HR i am working within.

Contests. Was looking at a couple in July, but neither are NPC, and I think if doing physique, even though I am drug free, this is the way to go if they offer a masters division (but I would still enter the open too). July stinks as far as schedule, because every weekend I will be on the road with my son and his basketball team. Best contest for me would be the Warrior Classic on August 18th in Colorado. They are offering a Masters mens physique division and this date does not conflict with anything other than the fact that I will have to keep on my diet all summer and when on the road. I think I can do it.

Long day today. Rushed from one thing to another. Did not start workout till 8pm and frankly not very motivated. Decided to keep it simple.

Barbell box squats to bosu with 2 chains on each side (total of 80lbs extra at top, deload at bottom) 135+/10 225+/10 275+/10 315+/10 365+/5 3-4 mins rest in between
Back was already f'ed up, and I not sure these helped.

Dropped the chains and box and did straight set squats with 225/15 x 4 sets with 3 mins between

No cardio today...bdywt 184 /bdyfat 7.5% Need to get alot leaner to get abdomen sharper.

*Pretty f'ing beat up from this week. Holidays mess with schedule. Sweets being offered left and right, turning most down...sneaking a few here and there. Heat here in Nebraska is about 100 each day...beats you down. Normally split up weights and cardio, but have had to do back to back, and as I write this I have to go back down to the dungeon and knock out 45 mins on the treadmill. Enough of my pissing and moaning, here is what I did tonight.

Observations....

Good luck to all at the team universe today, but can they just give Jeff Rodriguez a trophy for outstanding symmetry year after year? Great genetics and work ethic. Second, Ian Lauer's pre-judging pictures looked pretty damn good and he will be tough to beat. Third, looking at the photos for the 45 and 55 year old division, maybe that is the direction I should go? I would bring a competitive package to the 45, even a week out from 51. Been awhile, but here is a quick update. Plan is to enter the Colorado Natural on October 13. Having surgery to correct multiple hernias on Oct. 15. Stayed fairly lean from last show (warrior classic) and am looking to enter both Master divisions. May not do the open. Things to improve upon from last show...posing and contracting abs when at rest! Darker tan and apply more oil, and I am growing out my hair. Will shave goatee also. Looking at a 4 week prep starting on the 13th, so a few goodies in the diet and then get serious for two weeks, and real serious for the final two weeks. Really concentrating onabs (6 sets a day) and shoulders. These are two areas that honestly I have not put much energy into over the years. Currently doing one hour of cardio a day (30 in am, 30 in pm). Training 6 days per week on a bodypart a day split, with cardio everyday (running a 5K on Sundays to change things up, but will depend on health on knees if I continue this).

Did back today and this is how it went:

Rack DL's with Chains (60% 1RM) for 5 sets of 8 reps with 3 mins between...these were submax and done explosively with a controlled descent.

1. Alt lat pulldowns for 3 sets of 10-8 reps
2. DB pullover for 3 sets of 15

1. CS DB rows 4 x 10
2. Standing low cable rows 4 x 10
3. Trapbar upright rows 4 x 10
with 1.5 mins between cycles

1. Wide grip lat pulldowns 3 x 10
2. Seated Rope SA pulldowns 3 x 15
with 1.5 mins between

Abs were lying reverse cable crunch 3 x 15 supersetted with a non weight bearing movement (leg raise)

30 mins on elliptical and will repeat ab movement and elliptical tonight after dinner.

Forgot to add this to last post. Where am I going with this? At the moment, do the Colorado show, surgery (3 day heal), then take off rest of year...Maybe. Then hit alot of shows in 2013 (within driving distance if at all possible) then make a run at the Master Nationals. I am not kidding myself, this is a young mans sport and I will be 52 next year. I do what I do because I love it, and also it provides an example to my clients what is possible with hard work, proper diet, and the correct programming. Within the next year or so I would like to become an MP NPC judge, enjoy the sport and help further it from the other side of the stage.

Shoulders today with a big nod to Louie Simmons and Chris Albert from Metroplex Long Beach for this workout template.

Seated OHP (no back rest) with barbell with the ends attached to cable crossover pulleys. Kind of worked like a smith machine and or a pro spot. About 50% of 1RM, done explosively with a controlled (3 count) eccentric. Warm up, then 5 x 8. 2 mins between.

1. Using Abwings, I did what was a rear delt movement on a double pulley, pulling back with the elbows, 4 x 12
2. Seated DB laterals with a 3 second eccentric, 4 x 12 Rest 1.5 mins between

1. Lying rear delts on CC, 4 x 10
2. Split rope front raise, 4 x 10 1.5 mins rest between

Steel Log hangclean and presses, 3 x 10, adding weight with each successive set.

*So basically what went on here was a kickstart to the nervous system with the dynamic work, then on to a bunch of hypertrophy work, then finished with a big compound/functional movement.

Roman chair situps with a cable attached 6 x 10-15

T mill @ 7 degrees @ 4.1 mph x 60mins

Finished and watched the Huskers lose to the Bruins....yahoo

Sorry for no updates...too damn busy. I am competing this weekend at the NPC Natural Colorado on Saturday. Driving up on Friday. Am leaner for this comp, better abs, and grew hair, and will have a darker tan and more oil. Entered the Masters 42+ and Novice divisions. Should be a good competition. Will have surgery to install a mesh on the following Monday. Heal up and back to training, with a goal of entering a Masters National show next year. Already qualified with my Warriors Classic Win. Basically right now I am in the off season mode. Fairly clean diet, but I do have a nightmarish sweet tooth to keep at bay. I am hitting one body part per day on a 6 day rotation, with Sunday being my off day. I am still doing some cardio each day and or a conditioning or metcon session or a skill based session which looks alot like a crossfit type setup. I feel with mens physique, these types of workouts really give you the fitness/active type look that the judges are looking for instead of a bodybuilder in board shorts look. The other reason I am doing this type of protocol right now is that in the back of my mind, I may want to enter a Masters Crossfit event next year. i went to a crossfit cert back in 09, and have seen some of the masters workouts and feel i can be very competitive at this type of event. This all depends on how my body holds up and if I can keep the injury bug at bay.

Motivation is the same as it has always been...just love to train. Have that weird gene that effects all of us and cannot explain it. Competition has always been the byproduct of the love of training. It is weird too because I started this stuff when I was 15 and have always expected that there would be a time when training did not hold the same meaning and I would stop and get a beer gut like most guys my age. Never happened. Feel as motivated today as I did when I started. The only thing that age does bring is "realistic expectations" and I try and listen more to my body and give it a break when it is needed. Focus right now is on getting ready for the Masters Nationals in Mens Physique next year. Basic diet right now looks like this:

4am- Coffee and supplements (HMB, Aminos, Reduce XT)

430am- 1 cup egg whites, 1 whole egg, 2 tablespoons salsa...scrambled
2 slice ezekiel bread with 2 tablespoons PB2, more coffee

830am- Quest bar

10am- 1 cup oatmeal and 2 scoops isopure (aminos, HMB)

Noon- Meat and veggie, example...chicken breast and green beans, cup green tea and almonds
supplements

3pm- apple and Questbar (supps pre workout)

5pm- Post workout drink and supps

6pm- Meat and veggie (alot like lunch) supplements

8pm- Almonds and green tea

10pm- Protein drink with fiber and supps (example, ZMA, Melatonin,etc..)

As I wrote before, I have a brutal sweet tooth, so I need to watch the sweets. Hey, Thanks for the questions and I am honored that you asked.

Solid week of workouts brother! Love that you use all the tools that you have at your disposal! Mine as well keep it fresh and utilize the plethora of benefits that come from multiple training modalities right? I do much the same from sandbags to tires to kettle bells, battling ropes, prowlers, ploy boxes, chains etc......I hate stagnation and boredom in the gym so keeping it dynamic is where its at for both flavor and progress.

Saturday...Nada. High school basketball is starting and my wife and I are the varsity parent reps, so kick off scrimmage on Saturday meant no training time.

Max effort BP work
Did the third week/rotation of a 2 board BP...go up to a single Max today and change movement next ME workout. After hitting max, dropped to 80% of that number and hit a max rep set. Rest up to 3-4 mins. between

DB BP 3 sets of max reps with x amount of weight...example 100's x 20,16,13 resting 2 min. between.

CC's

3 sets flat
3 sets regular
10-12 reps each set with 1 min. between

5K run beating last weeks time.

Speed Squats x 9 sets of 2 with a set of 24" box jumps for 5 after each set. 1 min rest between.

Step ups to 18" step with barbell in clean rack position x 5 reps each leg and 5 Hang squat cleans....add 10-20lbs each set and rest 2 min. between for 3 sets.

Final circuit consisting of:

For anybody who looked in on this journal....I say THANK YOU. Hopefully you picked up an idea or two. I am currently revamping my training to include more crossfit type skill movements, including reintroducing OLing back into my workouts. Thinking about entering the Crossfit Open, beginning in March-April in the 50-55 category. Still considering going to Nationals, but would really like to see a 50+ or 45+ division, but honestly, after my hernia surgery, my abs look great, and I could easily compete in the 40 division and or lower....35+, etc.. From a marketing aspect, being a NPC MP two time winner (two divisions and one overall) and doing it in two national qualifiers, and giving that up to go to the games, would be a bigger media deal than winning the Nationals in MP in any masters division. Still considering.

CrossFit open would be huge! That takes some brass and skill to compete let alone be successful in that event. I watched the womens division a few weeks ago and (despite wanting to get phone numbers) I was super impressed with the physiques and athletic talent these girls were showing!

If you take that leap bro I give you props as that is one hell of an event to train for and compete it for sure! Fun as all hell I imagine to!
