im starting with a draft day rumour...
isles will take tavares with the 3rd pick(a la nfl):
tampa needs to clear cap room (ex: malone)as they are above the cap floor..the isles are below the cap floor..the islanders ABSOLUTELY NEED to take on salary to reach the cap floor because its as much a penalty to be below it as it is to be above it…tampa will offer their 2nd pick in the first round, their pick in the 2nd round and an overpayed player to the isles in exchange for the isles 1st overall pick..the isles will accept with tampa signing into the trade agreement, that they will take the player not wanted in the draft by the isles(basically isles telling tampa draft anyone but tavares)
result: tampa gets the 1st overall pick (hedman), clears cap room, and gets to clear deadweight(malone as an ex)..isles get 2nd pick in first round, a pick in the 2nd round, and a vet which they need since they are the youngest team in the nhl and the ability to reach the cap floor..
now that the isles will have the 2nd pic, they can do the same thing with atlanta, colorado, and LA..if they let on that they want someone other then tavares, undoubtedly one of the other teams below them will bite
