I am currently prepping for my first natural bodybuilding show. My question is when was your first natural bodybuilding show and what class did you compete and what was your final placing?

I was 18 years old... I weighed 179 for my first show and took 5th place out of I believe it was 10-11 competitors... I was in the Mens' Light-heavyweight class for that show: There was no teenage class... It was the Natural mid-states muscle classic...

Best of luck to you bro!

INBA ACT 2007 Masters 40+ last. Was 86kg thought I looked ok and realised I looked like Fat Albert compared to the other dudes when I stripped off in the pump up room. I'll be about 72kg at the INBA Sydney on May 3.

My first show was the 1998 ANPPC Illinois open held in Mt. Vernon, IL. I placed 2nd in the novice lightweight class. Rex Vaught promoted the contest. I believe there were 5 or 6 in the class....The following weekend I competed as an open lightweight at the NPC Illinois state Championships and placed 4 out 5. That was not a tested event.

The Anppc was a natural organization that was started in Westchester County, NY.. I believe..they used to hold shows throughtout New England, the east coast and the midwest. I don't think that the organization is in existence any more..although I believe that there is an group from the ANPCC which holds powerlifting meets.

I had a good experience at both shows and learned alot about all facets of the sport..(including proper tanning techniques, training, pre and offseason dieting etc.

Good luck! 5th Ave Gym Brooklyn

Just 2 days ago, the USBF New Jersey Classic. Weighed in at 170.1 lbs (down from 205!) and took:

-1st Heavyweight Novice
-Novice Overall
-1st Mens 35+
-3rd Middleweight Open

Not too shabby for a 1st outing :D

Hey Joe-

So how is it when your own brother beats you? -lol. I remember in college, I lived with two buddies who were both Hockey Goalies for different teams (I was on one team). When we played each other during the season, we all had to return to the same apartment afterward. It was definitely a little 'weird' after the game (we actually destroyed the other team, I scored twice).

As a teen sure it was hard to deal with because we were super competitive. We were both wrestlers and that mentality spills over in to competitive bodybuilding.

Just did my first show last weekend. Took 3rd in open middleweight out of 4 competitors and 4th out of 5 in light novice. Everyone in novice was 23 and under. I turn 40 in october of this year so I did feel old. I certainly wish I could have done better but told myself going in that my goal was to get on stage for the first time and get my feet wet. 12 weeks out I was 192 lbs. The day of the show I was 162. Next time I won't have to diet down so much as I plan on staying under 12 percent bodyfat year round.

I've learned the same thing. I came down 35 lbs for my show. Never again! -lol. I'm not letting myself get more than 20 lbs from my contest weight. I figure next time I can do small amounts of cardio earlier, and keep my cals higher in an effort to come in heavier on game day.

Stu, congrats on that first show, the pics and placings show you looked great and kicked some ass.

Joe, lol @ "old" - nothin but a state of mind!

1st contest, Sep. 2007, The Maine Event (about 30 competitors)
2nd novice talls (about 8 guys)
2nd open talls (I think 7 or 8)
2nd masters (4 guys, some thought I would have beat the winner there)

One week later, Oct. 2007 Cape Cod Naturals (about 105 competitors)
3rd novice talls (dunno about a dozen guys)
3rd open med-tall (12 or 13 guys?)
3rd masters tall (7 or 8 total?)

Stepped up for rookie season at age 44.
Came back in '08 season to win a class at each of the same two contests.
And I ain't done yet :flex:

Tell me about it! So many of the other competitors were helpful backstage, offering advice, and suggestions that I almost felt a little bad when I beat all of 'em (ALMOST, but not really -lol). I'm actually in contact with a couple of the other guys and it's just been great picking each others' brains about how we prepped and how we're each approaching an off-season.
