When we had Tyson Holyfield and Lewis everyone was saying the division is dead. Now it really is dead.

Im hoping Haye can liven it up. Unfortunately he is English, and just like Lennox had to experience, you can completely dominate the division and beat everyone you have ever fought professionally, but because you are not American or from the Americas you are disregarded.

Im afraid the days of Foreman Frazier Ali Holmes Norton are long gone. And I cant see it ever being as exciting as it was in the 60s/70s

WOW indeed!! what was hatton doing????? I have not seen many of Pac's fights, but ill be glued to the screen if he fights maywether! Hatton just seemed to be swinging wild shots and was far to slow.

I would like to know what he said to his corner as he sat down at the end of the first round.... sounded somehting like "i can't......" I think some problems in camp will be blamed, but Hatton was so confident before! Strange he chose to come out first too and was in the ring before his entrance song come on!

all a little odd, but, saying that, Pacs hand speed!!! something else.

I think Hatton will fight on.

Shame for Ricky, but was good to see his fans still singing for him after the fight!

Where was Hatton's defence and much talked about improved head movement?! He seemed just to charge forward head first looking to knock Manny out with 1 punch. Played straight into Manny's hands, who by the way looked fantastic, I really didnt expect him to hit so hard considering he started his career at around 8 stone!

[quote=SAMSON;227845]Where was Hatton's defence and much talked about improved head movement?!quote]
exactly.. Hatton's camp knew he had a problem with him not moving his head enough and so did Pacman's camp.. So there was no defending those hooks.. Pac landed way to many of them and he hurt Hatton in the first round real bad..
But, I really thought hatton was going to do something in the second round.. he looked good in the beginning..

Maybe now they will work on having him move that stationary head of his.. It's a freaking target for hooks

Im wouldnt be surprised if hatton hung it up now.....
Kosta Tszyu was probably his defining fight, and kosta wasnt exactly in his prime then....his performances against top tier dudes (mayweather and pacman) were obviously not his best performances, and kind of suggests he doesnt have it in him to fight the top teir guys out there today.

The way I see it is that there are two fighters out there better than Hatton, and he's been beaten by both of them. It would be a shame for him to hang it up now, he could have a few good years left.

The much hyped Battle of the East and West proved to be not a battle after all because Manny Pacquiao deftly defused it.
Doubters should now put to rest the lame excuse that Oscar dela Hoya was not his usual self when the Pacman beat him like he never was. This excuse downgraded Manny’s accomplishment to some extent. Hatton even bought the idea and said that he could have likewise beaten the drained Oscar that night of 6 December 2008. Oscar’s partial assessment of a stronger and bigger Hatton winning over Manny supported the doubters’ proposition that Manny is not really that great.
With Ricky’s easier and earlier dismissal by Manny than Oscar was, Freddie Roach proves right in his assessment that the Oscar of 6 December 2008 could still beat many top fighters of today. And this does not exclude the Ricky Hatton of 2 May 2009.
When Floyd Mayweather, Jr. announced his comeback, these doubters immediately removed Manny from the top P4P pedestal and reinstalled Floyd to it. That because of Manny’s previous 3 losses as against none to Floyd the latter should be on top. But if past performances against common opponents were to be the gauge, which should not be, Manny’s have the edge.
Floyd struggled with Oscar to earn a split verdict while Manny dominated and made Oscar quit before the start of the 9th round. The old-man-making defeat eventually led to Oscar’s retirement from being a fighter.
It took Floyd almost 10 rounds to beat Ricky who, before the stoppage, was holding his own to give Floyd problems. Manny easily beat Ricky who was on dreamland just before the bell to end the 2nd round. Now Ricky might be contemplating retirement himself.
By unseating Ricky Hatton, Manny won his 6th title in as many weight divisions. 5th recognized title by the alphabet sanctioning bodies in 5 weight classes. More so, he is the first fighter to win a 4th lineal or real championship in 4 weight divisions. He has now won the flyweight, featherweight (which many erroneously do not recognize), junior-lightweight and now junior-welterweight lineal championship. (Lineal=Lineage.)

Manny's Lineal titles:
1) Flyweight -112 lbs (KO Sasakul)
2) Featherweight - 126 lbs (TKO Barrera)
3) Jr. Lightweight - 130 lbs (SD JMM)
4) Jr. Welter - 140 lbs (KO Hatton)

World Titles recognized by sanctioning bodies:
1) WBC world flyweight champion
2) IBF world super bantamweight champion
3) WBC world super featherweight champion
4) WBC world lightweight champion
5) IBO world Jr. Welterweight champion

World Titles recognized by the public at large:
1) WBC world flyweight champion
2) IBF world super bantamweight champion
3) Ring Magazine world featherweight champion
4) WBC world super featherweight champion
5) WBC world lightweight champion
6) IBO world Jr. Welterweight champion

Ring magazine titles:
1) World featherweight champion
2) World super featherweight champion
3) World light welterweight champion

Non world titles:
1) OPBF flyweight champion
2) WBC international super bantamweight champion
3) WBC international super featherweight champion

In professional boxing, the lineal championship of a weight class is a notional world championship title. It is initially held at some moment in time by a boxer universally acclaimed as the best in the class. Another boxer can only win the lineal championship by defeating the reigning lineal champion in the ring. The lineal champion is described as "the man who beat the man".
A boxer loses his lineal championship if he is defeated, moves up in weight class or retires. Not when he abandons the title or is tripped of it by the sanctioning bodies.
From an offense-oriented fighter who made his US debut in June 2001,Manny Pacquiao has metamorphosed into a do-it-all punching machine now regarded as the best boxer in the world pound-for-pound and appears headed towards becoming an all-time great. I have a lot orf respect for Manny. Not only is he a great boxer, he is a very good person.

Pacquiao starts every fight with a fervent prayer while on his knees and expresses sincere concern for his fallen foes and love for his family, supporters, and the Filipino people. He is a very humble high profile athlete. Something lacking in today's in your face, me, me ,me athlete. Neither boxer is American, and we Americans often like to see American athletes here in America.
Last Saturday, after seeing Ricky Hatton get knocked-out cold by a Pacquiao left hand to the chin, one can’t help but feel concerned for his health.
Indeed, the Brit who never lost to anyone before in the weight class of 140 lbs. woke up and recovered enough to walk back to his dressing room. Still, it would be hard to believe that he did not suffer some sort of a permanent damage which may show up in the future.
On the other side of the coin, while we feel for Ricky Hatton, we have nothing but contempt for his trainer, Floyd Mayweather Sr. I mean, the man is a motor mouth and he was telling everyone within an ear-shot weeks before the fight that he is the best and “Freddie Roach is just a “joke”.
Thanks to Manny Pacquiao the true Mayweather colors came shining true.
After the fight, Mayweather showed total lack of class and very poor sportsmanship.
The guy who loves to proclaim himself as the “best there is” did not even show up at the podium with the Team Hatton during the official post-fight conference.
Was he perhaps scared that the media will expose him?
If his absence was because he rode with Hatton and Oscar de la Hoya to the Valley Hospital, I would have thought more of him as a trainer.
But he did not!
To make things worse, he could not even muster enough guts to admit that they lost! Or perhaps accept the reality that Hatton did not learn anything from him sufficient enough to counter what Roach has taught Pacquiao.
And, he still continues to be adamant that he is better than Freddie Roach!
In fact, if Hatton’s performance last Saturday was the best Mayweather could do to get Hatton on par with Pacquiao, Mayweather totally failed as a trainer.
Mayweather insisted that Hatton did not hold his hands up as instructed.
If one is on the blaming game, they should look no farther.
Mayweather did not train Hatton well enough. If he could not even train him to listen and carry such a simple instruction how can he expect him to learn the many other things needed to beat Pacquiao?
But why put all the blame on Hatton? Could he not at least accept the fact that he is partially responsible for the loss too?
Word is Mayweather may not be part of Team Hatton anymore. That is well and good for Team Hatton.
Apparently he and Gareth Williams, Ricky Hatton's attorney do not see eye to eye.
Word leaked out that Mayweather was in many occasions late for training and after the fight, blamed Hatton for the lost. Of course such misgivings would not sink well on Team Hatton. And, it would not be a surprise if they let him go.

Here is a very clear copy of the fight.

http://www.boxinghighlights.info/?p=1664
The fastest mouth in boxing stayed tightly shut on Monday as Ricky Hatton peered through the fog of his concussion and saw the unwanted spectre of a future outside the ring.
No snappy one-liners. No quickfire claims to an exalted place in the pantheon of British prizefighting. Not after being rendered senseless by Manny Pacquiao and hurried to hospital for brain scans.
The Hitman who feared no man inside the ropes could not confront the reality of his high-octane career approaching its end.
Hatton had spent months in denial after his first defeat, at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jnr. The referee that night, Joe Cortez, was tortuously rationalised as the culprit, even though Manchester’s pride and joy was outclassed en route to that knockout.
But there is no talking his way out of Saturday night’s two-round slaughter in the MGM Grand Garden Arena, so he said nothing.
Defeat is the loneliest of all the isolated places in the solitary sport of boxing but it is unusual for a leading practitioner not to emerge after a night of combat, win or lose.

Smiling again: Hatton and his fiance Jennifer Dooley relax by the pool Sunday, a far cry from the ring where, hours earlier, Ricky lay unconscious after being hammered to the canvas by Pacquiao. Jennifer looks pretty good for someone who does not engage in regular intense weight resistance excercise. Of course, I don't know this. Mere speculation on my part.

Comments from Teddy Atlas in hindsight. He picked Hatton to win and owns up his mistake. He picked Manny to win against Oscar De La Hoya last December and was correct.

Not bad for 6 minutes of action. Manny made $12 million from the match. Ricky made $8 Million. After the pay per view numbers are totaled, it is estimated that he may make over $40 Million from this fight. Preliminary numbers have the estimate at over 2 million buys......

Even if Antonio Margarito's handwraps were not loaded, it is typical of him to lose the first 4-6 rounds because he is a notorious slow starter. That is part of the reason why Manny thought he could beat Margarito before he was suspended.
Miguel Cotto is a good match for Manny. He is a good boxer, powerful but lacks speed. Almost comparable to Ricky Hatton in terms of power punching. Superior to Ricky in Boxing and defense...
Do I think Manny will win against Cotto? Yeah, i sure do. would I guarantee it? No. That's why they have to fight. One thing's for sure. Manny will be very competitive in this bout. Everyone is unbeatable on paper that's why they have to 'bring it' to the ring. Same thing applies to all the ball and stick sports out there.
I would love to watch this fight. People like watching Manny fight because he is an exciting fighter who wins a lot.

At this point, depending on what happens with Floyd's bout with Juan Manuel Marquez. I'm going to say that the Pacman is unbeatable unless proven otherwise. The dramatic improvements he has made starting with the Davisd diaz bout has made him virtually unstoppable. He has improved dramatically with every fight. 3-5 years ago, I would favor Floyd to win. Floyd is a superb defensive technician who does not like to get hit at all. He also wins hes fights throwing little punches.

What a destruction! Great photos videos posted. I like Paq but he won't beat Floyd if he comes back where he left off. We will see how he looks against JMM.

I disagree Ibarramedia. Cotto would destroy Paq.

Paq looks great but he only beat an old, weight drained DLH who even in his prime never was overly impressive in his biggest fights and Hatton who no one really thought had a chance (although I never expected the annihilation that occured).

Seeing as boxing falls under this forum, thought a random thread to discuss all things boxing was in order for those who have an interest.....

Besides the pacman fight, which was awesome, this year has some big fights coming.....

Flloyd Mayweather Jr. Is coming out of retirement to fight marquez.....considering he will probably win, a fight with pacman might happen by the end of the year.....Im excited to see what will come of this.
Mayweather wasnt the most exiciting champ, not that many crazy knock outs but he is ridiculously fast and accurate.....i think a fight with him and pacman would be dope.

in the heavyweights.....a class that has been pretty shitty for the last while....David Haye finally will get a chance to take down one of the kitchko's.....I dont really think much of either fighter...wladamir has pretty shit before he got his act together and even the the competition was shitty when he took the belt.....haye looks good, but he hasnt been a heavyweight long, and id ont know how he will man up to someone with experience.....thoughts?

Who are some of your favourite fighters?
I was always a fan of the heavyweights.....

I was a huge lennox lewis fan when he was coming up and when he was on top (he trained from a town not far form my home town in Canada).....He fought everyone who was anyone at the time, and avenged all his losses....he never fought mike tyson in his prime, but that was mostly due to Don king's business workings in trying to protect tyson (to my understanding).....

Iron Mike was another favourite......People say mike reigned during a time of shitty competiton, even still.....mike put most of them down within the first 2-3 rounds....he wasnt called the baddest man on the planet for nothing.....when he lost to buster douglas that was considered one of the biggest upsets in sports history....and i personally think when he got locked up for the rap charge that he was taken away during his prime....but he still came back when he was released and unified the titles again.....its a shame what his personal life did to his career, but still....his fights were something serious....

Lifelong fan of the sweet science here. The Marquez Mayweather fight is intriguing however I give Mayweather the edge in this fight. Mayweather knows what opponents to pick and Marquez by nature is a counter puncher which plays perfectly into Mayweather's game plan. However Marquez has turned up his intensity in his recent fights and ko'd Diaz and Casamayor who are two fighters who have never been tko'd. He seems to have gained power moving up in weight. I give the edge to Mayweather still however and see this fight as a setup for the superfight which will be Pacquiao vs Mayweather.

As far as David Haye vs Wladimir Klitschko I fully expect Wladimir to win this fight. I am not a huge Wladimir fan but his skills are undeniable and Haye's chin was shakey at crusierweight which will not bode well for him at heavyweight. He does come out guns ablazing however and is cat quick so if he lands a bomb on Wlad it could be over. Someone will obviously be ko'd in this fight. Wladimir still will win by a late round stoppage imo. Vitali has always been the better fighter however and I believe he would dispose of Haye quite easily.

A lot of boxing guys say Tyson hit harder than just about everyone except George Foreman. His upper cut was a pretty horrific thing for his opponents to experience, from left and right. Tyson-Dempsey, I would pay $100 to see that fight. The thing about Iron Mike is it is so hard for a lot of people to separate the fighter in the ring from the head case out of the ring.

I am a huge Iron Mike fan. Fascinating guy and exciting fighter. He had amazing skills but by no means is he the best HW of all time. With the exception of Holmes his early career wins were a list of cans.

Tyson did not have 1 punch KO power. He knocked ppl out with combos mostly. Marciano, Lennox Lewis, George Foreman all I would suspect hit harder then Iron Mike did.

The other problem for him is his height. He is listed at 5"11 1/2 but in all honesty I don't think he is an inch over 5'9. I know ppl that have met him that swear by this too.

Depending on how "retired" money mayweather was....
I dont think so tho.....If you look at mayweathers past fights....he is too accurate, too fast, has sick punch resistance, and never gets tired.....

His defence is better than Pacmans, Speed is on par if anything, Id say he is more accurate.....Id give power to pacman.....but thats about it....

I wouldnt use the hatton fights to judge these two....hatton was way too confident for the pacman fight and wanted to lay into him like he did all his shitty brit opponents before he met mayweather jr.....

Regardless. will be a dope fight if it materializes.....

Cotto overcomes cut, wins split decision

Miguel Cotto gave thousands of his cheering fans exactly what they hoped for on the eve of the national Puerto Rican Day parade.
Overcoming an early cut from an accidental headbutt and several brutal rounds from Joshua Clottey, the popular Cotto fought to a narrow split decision Saturday night inside a packed Madison Square Garden, retaining his WBO welterweight title.
With blood pouring down his face from the third round on, the pride of Caguas and the roughly 800,000 New Yorkers who trace their roots to his island nation threw his arms up at the end of a close and exhilarating bout that left both fighters battered.
Referee Don Trella scored the fight 116-111 and John McKaie 115-112, both for Cotto, while Tom Miller had it 114-113 for Clottey. A mega fight with Pound for pound champion Manny Pacquiao looms next.

The highly anticipated July 18 fight between Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez has been postponed due to a rib injury sustained by Mayweather while training. The mega-fight was scheduled to take place at MGM Grand in Las Vegas and be televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View.

There is a possibility that the fight will be moved to August 8.

Two weeks ago my source told me:

Golden Boy Promotion has to make a major decision this coming weeks for profit reasons. The proposed mega ppv fights between pbf vs. marquez is not selling well not only in tickets but also to the regular boxing sponsors tecate, cervesa and budwieser who doesnt like to back up the fight. Even the MGM grand didn't hold even a single ticket for the fight for their retail selling with hotel accomodation, while before the MGM always wanted to buy all the tickets in any major bout. According to Brad, less than 300 tickets has been sold as of this time. And theres no indication that it will surpass to 1,000 tickets this weekend. A very dismal showing for a mega fight or a ppv fight. So GBP is planning to move the schedule to August 8 and instead of PPV it will be shown for free viewing.

GBP is not new to this problem, in two weeks or three GBP will have a major announcement to move the fight because of injury to either marquez or mayweather as the reason to move the fight. They always done this every time they smell something wrong at the box office.

I took this with a grain of salt. But now it makes sense considering the postponement of the fight.

Ali at his bestoD99VbFzqAg&feature=rec-HM-r2

The unfortunate thing about this fight is this was not Cleveland Williams anywhere near his best. Everyone points to this fight as a great victory but this was a shot Cleveland (literally).

Little excerpt from Wikipedia:

Williams had been inactive the entire year of 1965 while recovering from gunshot wounds he suffered at the hands of a police officer arising out of traffic stop. Williams was shot with a .357 Magnum in the abdomen, barely survived, and suffered permanent kidney damage, a loss of over ten feet of his small intestine, and nerve damage from the bullet which affected his left leg above the knee, causing it to atrophy as a result

He fought Ali only one year later. Williams in his prime was a devastating KO artist, and man was he cat quick. Check out his fight with Sonny Liston. He looked 3 times as fast as Liston. He just had a suspect chin. But Williams really was one of the best heavyweights to never win a championship.

BERLIN (AP) -- When Wladimir Klitschko steps into the ring against Ruslan Chagaev at Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday, it will be in front of the largest boxing audience in Germany since Max Schmeling fought in the 1930s.

Action inside the ropes, however, might not live up to the hype.
Klitschko, the IBF and WBO heavyweight champion, was supposed to be fighting David Haye to settle a running verbal feud. But Haye bowed out earlier this month, saying he had injured his back.

Haye asked to reschedule the fight in July, but Klitschko wanted to keep the date and the 60,000-seat sellout -- the biggest boxing crowd in Germany since Schmeling fought Adolf Heuser in front of 70,000 people in Stuttgart on June 2, 1939.

"It's a chance that's coming around for the first time in my entire sporting career," the 33-year-old Ukrainian said. "I'm incredibly excited about the 60,000 fans."

The 30-year-old Chagaev was named the WBA's "champion in recess" in 2008 after withdrawing from two fights against Nikolai Valuev. After a third bout between the two scheduled for last month in Helsinki was canceled due to Hepatitis-B antigens being found in Chagaev's blood, the WBA announced Valuev as the rightful champion and put Chagaev's honorary title "under review."

As of Friday, the WBA had not clarified whether Klitschko (52-3) will fight for a piece of that title on top of defending his belts.
Michael Ehnert, the medical doctor for Universum, which is promoting Saturday's fight, said Chagaev is fit to fight in Germany.

"Since getting Hepatitis B many years ago, Ruslan is simply a carrier of Hepatitis-B antigens. This has not led to an infection," Ehnert said.
Klitschko has said he has been immunized against Hepatitis B and is not worried about the fight.

In February, Chagaev (25-0 with one draw) won a technical decision over Carl Davis Drumond in Rostock, Germany. It was the Uzbekistan-born boxer's first fight in more than a year.

Chagaev weighed in Friday in Gelsenkirchen at 102 kilograms (225 pounds), and Klitschko weighed in at 109 (240 pounds).

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) -- Wladimir Klitschko again showed his dominance of the heavyweight division, stopping Ruslan Chagaev in a hastily put together title fight Saturday night before 61,000 fans at a German soccer stadium.

The IBF and WBO champion added the Ring Magazine belt to his haul, knocking Chagaev down in the second round and opening a cut over the Uzbekistan-born fighter's left eye in the eighth.

Referee Eddie Cotton stopped the fight before the 10th round.

Chagaev, who is the WBA's "champion in recess," did little more than raise a deep bruise under Klitschko's right eye. He was done in by the Ukrainian's height advantage and superior power.

The sellout crowd was the biggest boxing audience in Germany since Max Schmeling knocked out Adolf Heuser in front of 70,000 people in Stuttgart in 1939.

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Paul Spadafora, a former IBF lightweight champion fighting for the first time in 14 months, knocked out Argentina's Ivan Bustos on Wednesday.

Bustos' corner threw in the towel 2 minutes, 26 seconds into the sixth round of the scheduled eight-round welterweight fight.
Spadafora, who hadn't fought in his Pittsburgh hometown since 2004 because of legal problems, improved his career record to 42-0-1.
The bout was the 33-year-old Spadafora's first with Hall of Fame boxer Pernell Whitaker as his trainer.

Bustos, a counterpuncher who had trouble landing blows against Spadafora, is 25-13-3.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. Senate urged President Barack Obama to pardon the late black heavyweight champion Jack Johnson, who was sent to prison nearly a century ago because of his romantic ties with a white woman.

Senators approved the resolution by voice vote on Wednesday; it now goes to Congress.

Johnson became the first black heavyweight champion in 1908 -- 100 years before Obama was elected America's first black president. The boxer was convicted in 1913 of violating the Mann Act, which made it illegal to transport women across state lines for immoral purposes. The law has since been heavily amended, but has not been repealed.

The resolution was sponsored by Obama's 2008 opponent, John McCain. Similar resolutions offered in 2004 and last year failed to pass both chambers of Congress.

"One down, one to go," said congressman Peter King in a telephone interview. "The fact that John got it through the Senate is great."
He said that there would be "tremendous historic significance" in the nation's first black president pardoning the nation's first black heavyweight champ. King added that he hoped Congress will take up the resolution next month.

Neither McCain nor the White House immediately responded to requests for comment. But in unveiling the resolution in April, McCain said, "We need to erase this act of racism which sent an American citizen to prison on a trumped-up charge."

He also said he was sure that Obama would sign the legislation.
McCain and King are advocating the pardon along with filmmaker Ken Burns, whose 2005 documentary, Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson, explored the case against Johnson and the sentencing judge's admitted desire to "send a message" to black men about relationships with white women. Burns helped form the Committee to Pardon Jack Johnson, which filed a petition with the Justice Department in 2004 that was never acted on.

The resolution approved on Wednesday says that the boxer should receive a posthumous pardon "for the racially motivated conviction in 1913 that diminished the athletic, cultural, and historic
significance of Jack Johnson and unduly tarnished his reputation." It says a pardon would "expunge a racially motivated abuse of the prosecutorial authority of the federal government from the annals of criminal justice in the United States."

Johnson won the world heavyweight title in 1908 after police in Australia stopped his 14-round match against the severely battered Canadian world champion, Tommy Burns. That led to a search for a "Great White Hope" who could beat Johnson. Two years later, Jim Jeffries, the American world titleholder Johnson had tried for years to fight, came out of retirement but lost in a match called "The Battle of the Century," resulting in deadly riots.

RAMA, Ont. (AP) -- Steve Molitor outpointed Mexico's Heriberto Ruiz on Friday night to win the IBF super bantamweight title eliminator.
Molitor, former world champion, beat Ruiz (41-8-2, 8 KO) at Casino Rama to move into the vacant number two spot for the IBF crown.
Harry Davis scored the fight 116-112 in favor of Ruiz, Kelly Zolnierczyk had it 116-112 for Molitor, and Benoit Roussel scored it 116-112 for Molitor.

Ranked fourth in the world by the IBF coming into the fight, the boxer known as "The Canadian Kid" rebounded from a loss to Panamanian Celestino Caballero in a unified title fight last November.

Molitor, of Sarnia, Ontario, lost the IBF super bantamweight title and Caballero's WBA belt, but with his victory against Ruiz he'll have a chance to win his title back in September.

Molitor and Ruiz got off to a slow start with few punches thrown in the first and second rounds. The fighters were sparked by loud booing from the crowd, and the fight finally picked up at the end of the second.

Ruiz cut Molitor's forehead in the seventh to little effect. Ruiz began swinging wild punches, missing the target as Molitor advanced.
Blood dripping off Molitor's left brow seemed to temporarily slow the pace of the fight to open up the ninth round. Ruiz did not take advantage.

In the 10th round, both men rested for the first two minutes but ended the round slugging away.

Molitor opened the 11th by landing four straight punches that forced Ruiz back to the ropes. Ruiz responded in the 12th round with several body shots on Molitor, who survived to earn the split decision

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Victor Ortiz's left eye was nearly swollen shut, and his right eye was ringed by a deep cut. Bruises and abrasions covered much of the rest of his face.

Nope, the Golden Boy's telegenic protege isn't quite ready for prime time.

Argentina's Marcos Maidana stopped Ortiz early in the sixth round of an action-packed fight Saturday night, leaving one of the sport's top prospects pulverized and chastened.

The 140-pound bout featured five knockdowns and several wild momentum swings that both thrilled and stunned a Staples Center crowd of 8,600 expecting to witness another step in the evolution of the 22-year-old Ortiz, a charismatic slugger ticketed for stardom by promoter Oscar De La Hoya.

Instead, the fans marveled at a remarkably resilient U.S. debut by Maidana (26-1, 25 KOs) a heavy-handed 140-pounder largely unknown outside his native land and Germany, where he has fought six times in the last two years.

Maidana was knocked down three times in the opening two rounds, yet rallied with a devastating right hand that turned Ortiz's face into a mess. After Ortiz stumbled to the canvas early in the sixth, the ringside doctor stopped the fight.

"I knew I was fighting against the local guy, and I had to knock him out," said Maidana, whose only previous loss was a contentious split decision to Andreas Kotelnik earlier this year. "I went down, but I got up because I have a big heart. I saw that Victor felt my punches, and I said, 'I know I can win this."'

Ortiz (24-2-1), who held a comically large bag of ice to his swollen face afterward, acknowledged he entered the ring thinking about the bright lights, the chanting fans and the pressure -- everything but Maidana, who also knocked him flat in the first round and then eagerly accepted Ortiz's invitation to brawl.

"It didn't hit me until I was on my way to the ring," Ortiz said. "I was like, 'Whoa.' It just really messed with me, and I didn't perform. ... I just fought a dumb fight. I didn't listen to my corner."

Although De La Hoya insisted Ortiz still is a budding champion, the Kansas native took too many big shots while fighting with no discernible strategy. Ortiz connected on 42 percent of his 177 punches, but Maidana was much busier with 293 punches, connecting with 23 percent.

"Yeah, he went down," De La Hoya said. "But he'll get right back up and fulfill his dream."

Both fighters moved forward furiously from the opening bell, and Ortiz knocked down Maidana for the first time on a big right hand with about 1:15 left. With the crowd standing and cheering for Ortiz, Maidana landed a right hand that put Ortiz flat on his back.

The crowd was as stunned as Ortiz. The second round was even more electric, with the boxers trading shots until Ortiz knocked down Maidana with a right hook with about 30 seconds left -- and then did it again with a shorter version of the same punch right before the bell.

But Maidana landed several big shots in the next three rounds, rocking Ortiz with two powerful right hands in the final seconds of the fifth. Ortiz also developed that big cut, which gaped open when the fight ended 46 seconds into the sixth.

"I came to look to finish him, and that's what happened," Maidana said. "He hits very hard, but he doesn't have a good chin. Definitely he didn't adjust to my rhythm."

Chris John, the Indonesian featherweight champion who backed out of his co-main event rematch with Rocky Juarez this week because of an illness, appeared in the ring before the final bout. He waved to several hundred flag-waving Indonesian fans who bought tickets thinking they would see John's second fight in this country.

The undercard fighters entered the ring to the strains of remixed Michael Jackson songs, and Ortiz made his ring walk to a "Beat It" and "Thriller" mash-up. A ceremonial 10-count was rung in honor of the pop star who died Thursday in Holmby Hills, about 12 miles from Staples Center. Jackson spent many nights rehearsing at the arena during the past two months for his 50 scheduled summer appearances in London.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) -- Juan Manuel Lopez stopped Olivier Lontchi in the ninth round to retain the WBO junior featherweight title Saturday night.

For Lopez (26-0, 24 KOs), the TKO was his 14th consecutive knockout.

"I knew going to be difficult," Lopez said. "He was very awkward and very difficult to fight. I think the he was way fighting he wasn't really boxing. He was running a lot. I didn't feel like I was fighting as much as chasing. But I knew my strength would eventually get to him. I thought my power would wear him down."

The 26-year-old earned the win when Lontchi went to his corner after the ninth round and told trainer Howard Grant he was unable to continue.

"He had a rib injury coming into the fight and he got hit with a bad shot there the round before (the eighth)," Grant said. "He actually wanted me to stop it after the eighth, but I told him to try it for one more round."

Lopez, cheered on by a sparse-but-enthusiastic crowd of Puerto Rican supporters at Boardwalk Hall's Adrian Phillips Ballroom, scored two knockdowns in the scheduled 12-round bout.

He dropped Lontchi for the first time in the second round with a right hook to the side of the head. Early in the ninth, Lontchi walked into a straight left and went down in a heap before rising on unsteady legs.
Welterweight champion Miguel Cotto may be the most popular fighter in Puerto Rico, but Lopez is not far behind.

"He's a superstar, no question about it," said Lopez's promoter, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum. "I can't see anybody who can stand up to him in the junior-featherweight or featherweight division."

Lontchi, a native of Cameroon now living in Montreal, also earned some kudos with a respectable effort. The 26-year-old did not have enough firepower to slow Lopez's advances, but did his best to frustrate Lopez with an unorthodox style that included steady movement interspersed with occasional flurries.

Lopez, who was defending his title for the fourth time, appeared headed for an easy win when he dropped Lontchi in the second round. Two rounds later, however, Lontchi began to find the mark with his own punches. He caught Lopez off-guard with a series of crisp, straight rights that sent sweat flying from Lopez's brow and caused his fans to gasp in surprise.

With each passing round, Lontchi gained confidence. Lopez was still in command most of the time, but Lontchi didn't wilt.

That was especially apparent in the seventh round. Lopez punished Lontchi with a body attack that drove him into the ropes. But instead of buckling, Lontchi gamely fought back and even landed a straight right that caused Lopez to briefly back away.

Lopez was relentless.

According to CompuBox statistics, Lopez landed 244 of 592 punches (41 percent) to 84 of 271 for Lontchi (31 percent). He also owned a 211-65 advantage in power punches.

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) - Former boxing champion Alexis Arguello, considered one of the best lightweights to step in the ring, has been found dead.
Presidential spokeswoman Rosario Murillo confirmed Arguello's death early Wednesday.
The 57-year-old Arguello was elected mayor of Managua last year. He turned pro in 1968 and won his first title by knocking out Ruben Olivares for the featherweight crown. He later captured the super featherweight and lightweight belts, becoming the sixth boxer to win titles in three weight classes.
He retired in 1995 with a record of 82-8 with 65 knockouts, and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992.
His Sandinista party's Radio Ya said coroners are conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

ALEXIS ARGUELLO: 'TALK SOFTLY BUT CARRY A BIG STICK'

By Jim Amato
One of the best pure punchers of my generation was Alexis Arguello. He was aptly nicknamed "The Explosive Thin Man." He was tall and rail thin but his punch could stop an opponent dead in his tracks.
It's hard to believe that Alexis was stopped in the very first round of his pro debut in his native Managua, Nicaragua. He would rally to win three straight then lose again. Hardly the makings of a legend.
Alexis would reel off twenty straight wins before his next loss. Then came thirteen more victories including knockouts over Octavio Gomez and Jose Legrá. This led to a shot at the WBA featherweight title in 1974. The champion was the talented Ernesto Marcel of Panama. Alexis lost a fifteen round decision.
Alexis would rebound to win four in a row including a stoppage win over rugged Art Hafey of Canada. He again challenged for the WBA featherweight title in 1974. His opponent this time would be legendary Ruben Olivares. In a see saw battle Alexis took Ruben out in round thirteen and also took his title.
In 1978 Alexis moved up to 130 pounds to take on WBC junior lightweight champion Alfredo Escalera. In a great, great fight Alexis finally halted Escalera in the thirteenth round to annex that title. Alexis may go down as the best 130 champion in history. He would beat Escalera in a classic rematch. He would then go on to beat Bobby Chacón, Rolando Navarette, Bazooka Limon and Boza Edwards. All would win a piece of the junior lightweight title after Alexis left the division.
Alexis would move up again and defeat Jim Watt to win the WBC lightweight title in 1981. He would defend that title four times. Among those defenses was his victory over future champion Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini. He also nearly decapitated the future trainer of Mike Tyson, Kevin Rooney, in a non-title fight.
Alexis seemed unbeatable and decided to move up in weight again to challenge WBA junior welterweight champion Aaron Pryor. Their November 12, 1982 bout in Miami was one of the most action packed bouts of all time. The fiery Pryor absorbed the bombs of Arguello and finally overwhelmed Alexis to score a brutal knockout in the fourteenth round. What a fight it was! They would meet again and this time Pryor took Alexis out in ten.
It seemed like the end for Arguello but he fought on. Over a year later he would cold cock former champion Billy Costello in the fourth round. Alexis would not fight again for eight years. He would win one and then lose one. Realizing it was no longer there, he retired for good. He ended his 90 bout career with an 82-8 record.
Alexis was a class act. He did not verbally assault his opponents. He was a true gentleman. He did what he had to do to win and he did it well. Very well...
In the words of former President Teddy Roosevelt he "Talked softly but carried a big stick." I think the stick was called his right hand.

MANAGUA, Nicaragua -- Former boxing champion Alexis Arguello, one of the best junior lightweights to step in the ring, was found dead at his home early Wednesday.

Alexis Arguello was found dead Wednesday at 57. He is pictured in June 1981 after beating Jim Watt to win the WBC lightweight title.
Presidential spokeswoman Rosario Murillo confirmed Arguello's death and an autopsy was pending. The La Prensa newspaper reported Arguello was found with a gunshot wound to the chest."We are upset," said Murillo, who declined to provide details about the death. "This is a heartbreaking announcement. He was the champion of the poor, an example of forgiveness and reconciliation."
The 57-year-old Arguello, who was elected mayor of Managua last year, retired after several comebacks in 1995 with a record of 82-8 with 65 knockouts. Nicknamed "The Explosive Thin Man," Arguello was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992.
In 1999, a panel of experts assembled by The Associated Press voted Arguello the best junior lightweight and sixth-best lightweight of the 20th century. His popularity in his own country was so great that he carried the flag for Nicaragua at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and led to his decision to seek public office.
Arguello fought against the Sandinista government in the 1980s after it seized his property and bank account, but later joined the party and ran for mayor of the capital last November. He defeated Eduardo Montealegre, though opponents alleged the vote was fraudulent.

Arguello had returned Sunday from Puerto Rico, where he honored the late baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente. His death prompted Nicaragua President Daniel Ortega to announced he was canceling a trip to Panama for the inauguration of President-elect Ricardo Martinelli.
Arguello turned professional in 1968 and lost his first bout. He didn't lose much after that, and six years later rallied to knock out future Hall of Famer Ruben Olivares in the 13th round to win the WBA featherweight title.
Arguello went on to win the super featherweight title and lightweight title, his 5-foot-10 frame and long reach allowing him to move up in weight without losing his tremendous punching power. At the time, he was only the sixth boxer to win titles in three weight classes, and was considered for a time the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
Nobody had ever won titles in four divisions, and Arguello moved up in weight again in November 1982 to challenge junior welterweight king Aaron Pryor in a fight billed as "Battle of the Champions." More than 23,000 fans packed the Orange Bowl in Miami, and the two waged an epic battle in which Pryor knocked out Arguello in the 14th round.
A rematch was ordered and they met again a year later at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. This time, Pryor knocked out Arguello in the 10th round.
He announced after the fight that he would retire from boxing, but as so often happens in the sport, he couldn't stay away from the ring.
Arguello returned in 1985 to beat Pat Jefferson, and won another fight the following year, but didn't step into the ring again until 1994. After defeating an unknown club fighter in Miami, Arguello lost to journeyman Scott Walker in January 1995 and retired for the last time.

The gods must be smiling on Ghana these days. First, they have Barack Obama visiting the country. That in itself is very significant for reasons obvious to everyone. After all the US President does not go around visiting other countries everyday.

Then tonight, their boxing idol, bantamweight Joseph King Kong Agbeko (yes that is his given name and not just a nickname) scored a giant win against Vic Darchinyan. Darchinyan was picked by many pundits to simply roll over the gentleman from Ghana.

And what a giant blow out!

Oh no, I do not mean the manner by which Agbeko destroyed the Armenian loudmouth at the Bank Atlantic Center at Sunrise, Florida.

Most people indicated that Darchinyan will no doubt beat Agbeko and grab his IBF title making him a three division champion. Not so tonight. Agbeko wins by unanimous decision to the disgust of Darchinyan.

On a somber note, promoters Don King and Gary shaw rang the bell for a 10 count in memory of Alexis Argullo,Arturo Gatti and Michael Jackson. Preceded by a moment of silence. King promoted one of Michael Jackson's concert tours before.

Former world boxing champion Arturo Gatti, who was raised in Montreal, has been found dead in northeastern Brazil.
On a second honeymoon with his wife and 10-month-old baby, Gatti's blood-stained body was found in an apartment in Porto de Galinhas, Brazilian police say.
A police investigation is underway, but few details are being released. Foul play is suspected in the death.
Gatti's body was found at around 6 a.m. Saturday morning. He was found in his underwear, with blood stains on his neck and the back of his head.
Nicknamed "Thunder," Gatti was one of the most successful Canadian boxers in history. Beginning his professional career in 1991 at age 19, he scored a third-round knockout in his first bout.
Three years later he captured the United States Boxing Association junior lightweight title and successfully defended it twice. He earned the International Boxing Federation's world junior lightweight title the following year.
Born in Italy but raised in Montreal, the 37-year-old Gatti retired two years ago.

NUERBURG, Germany (AP) -- Felix Sturm retained his WBA middleweight title, beating Khoren Gevor in a unanimous decision Saturday at the Ring Arena.

Sturm relied on clean, strong shots that stunned Gevor several times throughout the 12-round fight. But the Armenian challenger was aggressive and tenacious, moving Sturm around the ring and keeping him in a defensive crouch.

All three judges called the fight for Sturm, 115-113 twice and 117-111. Many in the arena were disappointed, including Gevor, who said "no one won that fight."

Sturm (33-2-1) said he wasn't as perturbed by Gevor's dissent as he was by what he said were some dirty moves in the ring.

"He wants to be world champion, like everyone, but you have to do more than push with your head," Sturm said.

The two fighters, both 30 years old, spent much of the fight locked with their gloves and heads nearly touching. At the close of the third round, Sturm fell to the mat when Gevor (30-4) took a swing while standing on his opponent's foot.

Sturm, a German, hasn't lost in his past nine fights, though he only mustered a draw against Randy Griffin in October 2007. He beat Griffin by unanimous decision later that year. His recent fights before Saturday been a string of easy victories.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -- Five years after winning a career-launching Olympic silver medal, Amir Khan has his first shot at a world title when he steps up to light-welterweight Saturday to fight WBA champion Andreas Kotelnik.

The big-punching Khan will be facing a Ukrainian opponent who has never been knocked down in his 34-fight professional career.
Khan (20-1) made an impact at the 2004 Athens Olympics as a 17-year-old and has shown his potential as a pro with a series of spectacular knockout victories.

But the Briton also revealed a suspect chin after being knocked out in 54 seconds by Breidis Prescott of Colombia last September.
The 22-year-old Khan has regrouped, however, switching trainers and relocating to the United States to rebuild his career.

"The Prescott fight made me change from a boy to a man. It took me out of my comfort zone because when you lose a fight you look at the mistakes and everything," Khan said. "I've changed everything. I've moved to train in Los Angeles, I'm totally focused now. I'm a different fighter, a different person and the way I fight now is totally different."

A fifth-round stoppage victory in March over respected veteran Marco Antonio Barrera helped repair Khan's credibility.
"I know people didn't think I'd become a world champion -- even people probably in my own camp, my own team," Khan said. "I made one mistake but I've proved everyone wrong by beating Barrera and now fighting for a world title. And hopefully when I wake up on Sunday morning, I'll be a world champion."

Khan is expecting a longer fight at M.E.N. Arena against Kotelnik, the lightweight silver medalist at the 2000 Sydney Olympics who has a 31-2 record with one draw since turning pro.

"It's going to be a skillful fight, more about technique, and I don't think it's going to finish early," he said.

Khan has fought once at light-welterweight, scoring a unanimous decision over Rachid Drilzane of France in December 2006.
Kotelnik has had two successful defenses since beating Gavin Rees in March 2008 to take the WBA belt, outpointing Norio Kimura and Marcos Rene Maidana.

"If I win this fight it will open the road to further fights, especially in America," Kotelnik said.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -Highly touted Amir Khan finally lived up to lofty expectations, earning a unanimous decision over Andreas Kotelnik on Saturday to capture the WBA junior welterweight title.
The 22-year-old Khan's blistering victory came five years after a career-launching Olympic silver medal, and 10 months after he was knocked out by Breidis Prescott in 54 seconds.

Two judges scored the fight 118-111, while the third had it 120-108.
"It's the best feeling ever,'' Khan said. "I picked the right shots and was composed. I stuck to the game plan and stayed concentrating.
"In the early days I used to rush and fight with my heart, but now I use my brains.''

Khan (21-1) was stepping up a division to face Kotelnik, but didn't appear to lose any speed. His quick combinations and impressive footwork helped carry him to a triumph in front of Naseem Hamed, one of only two other Brits to become a champion at a younger age.
"He's won one of the best belts out there,'' said Hamed, who at 21 became featherweight champion. "He showed courage, heart. I'm very, very impressed.''

After his surprising loss to Prescott, Khan began working with well-respected trainer Freddie Roach, who has helped guide Manny Pacquiao to the top of the pound-for-pound lists.

"That defeat made me a better fighter,'' Khan said.

A fifth-round stoppage victory in March in the same M.E.N. Arena ring over highly respected Marco Antonio Barrera helped restore Khan's confidence, if not his credibility, and his newfound polish showed while handing Kotelnik (31-3-1) his first loss since 2005.
"I want to thank Freddie Roach for making this happen,'' Khan said. "He's taken me to a different level and now I'm a world champion.''
The 31-year-old Kotelnik struggled to cope with Khan's relentless punching and couldn't land anything to trouble his younger opponent, who became one of the sport's most promising prospects after an impressive performance during the Athens Olympics.
"Khan chose the right tactics,'' said Kotelnik, a Ukrainian, through a translator. "I wasn't myself today. Khan was the better fighter so he won.''

"Don't forget, last September he was written off,'' promoter Frank Warren added. "He's going to go on to do bigger things.''
Khan impressed with his counter-punching from the opening bell, with his nimble defensive reflexes ensuring his body was rarely exposed.

"I was strong, I took some big shots, but I stayed focused throughout the rounds,'' Khan said. "The amateurish mistakes have gone now. Freddie Roach and the team, the sparring I've got in America is probably as tough as the fight here.

"I'm still young, I'm 22. I've got big things in the future to come.''
Khan hopes that means a big payday in the United States.

"It's time to go to America and fight the big names over there,'' he said. "Now I'll get people knocking on my door. I want to fight the likes of (Juan Manuel) Marquez, because I think my style will go up against theirs. ... I will have a few weeks off and then set new goals.''

Earlier, a trio of Britain's Beijing Olympians went 3 for 3 on the undercard.

Middleweight gold medalist James DeGale stopped Ciaran Healey at the end of the first round with a sharp left body shot, Frankie Gavin won his third straight by beating Graham Fearn, and Billy Joe Saunders stopped Matt Scriven.

Gavin, whose medal chances in Beijing were ruined when he had weight problems going into the Olympics, finished off Fearn with a left hook to the body.

Saunders, who lost in the second round in Beijing, stopped Scriven in the second round

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -- Enzo Maccarinelli is considering retirement after being stopped in the third round by Denis Lebedev on Saturday, a third defeat in four fights for the former WBO cruiserweight champion.

Maccarinelli was outclassed by Lebedev (18-0, 13 KOs), whose series of unanswered left hooks made referee Terry O'Connor stop the contest at M.E.N. Arena.

The big-punching Maccarinelli (29-4) has been struggling to rebuild his career since losing the WBO title to David Haye last March in second-round knockout.

"To be honest, I'm just devastated,'' Maccarinelli said. "I don't think I've got it anymore. I trained hard but nothing went right for me, I felt a bit gun-shy.''

On a bill topped by 2004 Olympic silver medalist Amir Khan, a trio of Britain's Beijing competitors easily made it three wins out of three since turning professional, but created little entertainment.

Middleweight gold medalist James DeGale stopped Ciaran Healey at the end of the first round with a sharp left body shot, Frankie Gavin stopped Graham Fearn in the second round, and Billy Joe Saunders stopped Matt Scriven.

"It was all right, 6 out of 10,'' DeGale said. "I'm just practicing what I do in the gym in the ring, but maybe I only hit second gear.''
Gavin, who knocked down Fearn twice to claim a third straight win, had his medal chances in Beijing ruined when he had weight problems going into the Olympics.

"That's the best so far,'' Gavin said, after finishing Fearn off with a left hook to the body. "I wasn't tense or loose, I was more relaxed and everything went perfectly.''

Saunders, who lost in the second round in Beijing, stopped Scriven in the second round.

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Lightweight Miguel Vasquez upset previously undefeated and world-ranked Breidis Prescott by split decision in their 10-round main event Friday night at Planet Hollywood.
The lanky, 5-foot-11 Prescott, of Miami, won the early rounds and knocked down Vasquez, of Mexico, with a left jab to the head in the first.

But Vasquez negated Prescott's height and reach edge and took advantage of the native Colombian's wild, looping punches and scored with shots up the middle. By the seventh round Prescott was bleeding from the mouth and his left eye was closing.

Vasquez won by scores of 96-93 and 95-94 on two scorecards, while Prescott was ahead 97-92 on the third judge's card.

Vasquez, at 136 pounds, improved to 25-3 with 12 knockouts. Prescott, at 137, who entered the bout ranked No. 5 by the WBA, No. 7 by the WBC, No. 11 by the IBF, and No. 12 by the WBO, dropped to 21-1 with 18 KOs.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) --With Amir Khan now a world champion, many English boxing fans will be hoping to see him in the ring with Ricky Hatton.

Though the 22-year-old Khan's trainer is enthusiastic about a Battle of Britain bout, promoter Frank Warren has strong reservations.
Hatton's future in the sport has been in doubt since he was knocked out by Manny Pacquiao in the second round of their 140-pound title fight in May and he went to the hospital for a precautionary brain scan.

Hatton, who has been known for quickly putting on weight after fights, has returned to a hospital in his native Manchester in the past week with a stomach bug.

Warren insists that the 30-year-old Hatton is not up to fighting Khan, who captured the WBA light-welterweight title by unanimous decision against Andreas Kotelnik on Saturday.

"Ricky shouldn't be fighting - it's not good for boxing and it's not good for him more importantly,'' Warren said on Sunday. "He's just been in hospital for overindulgence or whatever that may be.
"I don't think he should fight again, he should definitely retire. If the fight happened and, God forbidden, something bad happens, everyone would blame boxing. Sometimes fighters go on and at the end of the day bad things happen.''

Trainer Freddie Roach, whose strict regime has turned around Khan's fortunes since he was knocked out in 54 seconds by Breidis Prescott, is less gloomy about Hatton's future prospects.
"If he does decide to fight again and continue his career, then he's made for my guy,'' Roach said. "I'd take that fight in a heartbeat.''
Khan is leaving the decision to his team.

"I'm a fan of Ricky Hatton and I'd like him to support me on the way to achieving what he's achieved,'' Khan said. "Boxing is a game where you have to face fighters, and for Britain it would be a huge fight.

"Let's see what happens. I'll leave it with Frank and Freddie and if they think it's the right move for me to make, then I'll do it.''
A more realistic prospect for Khan, after outclassing Kotelnik from start to finish with quick combinations and impressive footwork despite stepping up a division, is traveling to the United States.
"It's time to go to America and fight the big names over there,'' Khan said. "Now I'll get people knocking on my door. I want to fight the likes of (Juan Manuel) Marquez, because I think my style will go up against theirs. ... We'll give it a few weeks and see where we go.''

The dates for The Super Six Boxing Classic, Showtime's innovative super middleweight tournament, were announced Tuesday. Here's what the matchups for Group Stage 1 will look like:

October 17, 2009

Carl Froch (25-0, 20 KO's) vs. Andre Dirrell (18-0, 13 KO's)
Skinny: Tough fight to call. Froch was badly out boxed by Jermain Taylor before scoring a 12th round knockout of Taylor earlier this year. Like Taylor, Dirrell is a highly skilled fighter without shocking knock-out power. If Dirrell can work the whole ring and avoid too many heavy shots, he can steal an upset. But Froch's power will probably catch up with him. Factor in that this fight will take place in Nottingham, England and I like Froch by knockout.

Arthur Abraham (30-0, 24 KO's) vs. Jermain Taylor (28-3-1, 17 KO's)

Skinny: Abraham is my pick to win this tournament, and I like him every possible way against Taylor. Abraham has long been one of the most underrated middleweights of this era and one of the toughest fighters in the business. The fact that he fought most of his first fight against Edison Miranda with a broken jaw is evidence of that. Taylor isn't shot like most people think, but his best days are behind him. Not even the partisan Little Rock, Arkansas, crowd can save him here. Take King Arthur by knockout.

November 21, 2009

Mikkell Kessler (41-1, 31 KO's) vs. Andre Ward (19-0, 12 KO's)
Skinny: Why is Kessler, an established world champion with only a loss to Joe Calzaghe, blemishing his resume, traveling to Ward's hometown of Oakland for this fight? I don't have a problem with it, but I would think Kessler would. Still, this fight is a colossal mismatch. Ward is a promising fighter but his resume is thick with nobody's (he outpointed Miranda in May, his biggest win to date) and he's not in Kessler's class. Ward has been on the canvas before and I think Kessler will put him there again. Take Kessler by knockout.

ATLANTA - FORMER world boxing champion Vernon Forrest was shot dead in Atlanta, the victim of an apparent robbery, city authorities and local media said on Sunday.
Forrest was best known for causing an upset in 2001 against then WBC welterweight champion Shane Mosley - regarded by many as the world's best fighter at the time - and beating him again six months later.
Forrest, who was based in Atlanta, was a world champion in the welterweight and light middleweight divisions and also fought for the United States at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
'The cause of death is multiple gunshot wounds involving the torso and thigh, and the manner of death is homicide,' the chief medical examiner of Georgia's Fulton county said in a statement.
Forrest was shot on Saturday as he attempted to prevent people from stealing his car at a gas station in southwest Atlanta. His girlfriend's son was in the car at the time.
The case is being investigated by the Atlanta police, according to the medical examiner and local media

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) -- Police say they have found no evidence that WBC middleweight boxing champion Kelly Pavlik and his trainer assaulted a man in a nightclub last weekend in Pavlik's hometown of Youngstown.
No charges have been filed.

Youngstown Police Chief Jimmy Hughes said Tuesday the initial investigation into a report filed by 45-year-old Ronald Cappitte of Boardman has turned up no corroborating evidence.

Cappitte alleges he walked up to Pavlik in a bar about 11 p.m. Saturday, said, "Hi," and was punched in the groin. A police report says he fell, got up and was punched repeatedly in the body by Pavlik and trainer Jack Loew.

Loew said the incident "got so blown out of proportion."

He said Kelly and Cappitte have been friends for years.

"They were goofing around and the next thing I know he lunges at Kelly and grabs him by the neck, and Kelly thinks they're still playing. He's laughing around. And my wife says to me, 'Jack, I don't think this kid is playing around anymore.' And I stepped between them."

Loew said he and Pavlik had just arrived at the East Side Civics club. The two had been at an amateur boxing show that was a fundraiser for Pavlik's gym, the Southside Boxing Club, where the boxer trains.

"There was not one punch thrown," Loew said. "We were having a great time. We just got there."

"I'm 49 years old. I got no use to be rumbling on bar floors. Things are going too good for me these days to be doing that."

Loew said several other people at the bar got into a scuffle after he pulled Pavlik away.

John D'Altorio Sr., one of Pavlik's publicists and friends,

said Pavlik and Cappitte were "horsing around" and things got a little out of hand. He said Pavlik frequents the club and is very popular.

As for Loew, "Jack was trying to break things up," D'Altorio said.
Pavlik has held the WBC middleweight title since September 2007 and has successfully defended his title twice, most recently in February with a ninth-round TKO over Marco Rubio in Youngstown.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP)—Boxer Arturo Gatti’s body was exhumed Friday to allow the Quebec coroner’s office to perform a new autopsy at his family’s request.
The development comes a day after Brazilian police classified Gatti’s death as a suicide.
Until Thursday, police in the northeastern Brazil city of Recife considered it a homicide, with his wife as the prime suspect. Now, police say Gatti hanged himself with a handbag strap from a staircase column more than seven feet off the ground.
Gilles Ethier, deputy chief coroner of the western part of the Province of Quebec, said Gatti’s family had retained an American pathologist, who will assist with the autopsy Saturday morning at the Montreal morgue.
“Clearly, it’s necessary for us to pursue the investigation,” Ethier said. “Of course, it’s a little more complex for the pathologist because the body has been embalmed.”
Gatti’s Montreal funeral was July 20.
Many of his friends and family have expressed disbelief at the suicide ruling, and Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon said in a statement Friday that government officials will seek more information from Brazilian authorities on the Gatti investigation and its findings.

Ellen Haley, a spokeswoman for Main Events, the longtime promoter of Gatti’s bouts, said in a statement “we do not believe that he took his own life.”
She said members of the Gatti family, along with his boxing manager Pat Lynch, will carry out their own investigation. “We believe that once the results of that investigation are revealed, the truth will come to light and justice will be done,” Haley said.
Gatti’s wife, 23-year-old Amanda Rodrigues, was released Thursday after being held since July 12 in Recife. She and Gatti arrived with their 10-month-old son a few days before in the resort town of Porto de Galinhas, where they rented a two-level apartment.
“The exhumation does not surprise me at all. It makes perfect sense,” Rodrigues’ attorney, Celio Avelino said by telephone. “Gatti’s family was first told by police that Amanda had killed him, and now they are saying he committed suicide. Of course, family and friends have doubts and are demanding another autopsy—as they should.”
“I am absolutely sure, that the second autopsy will reconfirm that he committed suicide,” he said.
Repeated calls to Rodrigues went unanswered.
Milena Saraiva, a Recife police spokeswoman, provided more information Friday about Gatti’s death.
Police ultimately concluded he hanged himself in the apartment early on July 11 from a wooden staircase column that was 7.3 feet off the ground. He stood on a stool and kicked it out from underneath him, police said. The autopsy report said Gatti was suspended for about three hours before his body fell to the floor.
Rodrigues said she was sleeping with the couple’s son in an upstairs bedroom. She told police she went downstairs about 6 a.m. to get milk for the boy, saw Gatti’s body on the floor and assumed he was drunkenly sleeping. It was not until she went back downstairs at 9 a.m. that she discovered Gatti was dead and called police. Saraiva said no suicide note was found.
“The first investigators to arrive at the scene only saw his body on the floor and the bloodied strap near his body,” Saraiva said. “They assumed his wife strangled him.”
Saraiva said 17 witnesses told police the couple got into a loud fight on a street near the beach in Porto de Galinhas the night before Gatti died. Saraiva said Gatti had seven cans of beer, along with two bottles of wine, over the course of dinner and partying at a bar.

Witnesses told police Gatti at one point picked up Rodrigues, who weighs about 100 pounds, by her chin with his right hand and tossed her to the ground.
Saraiva said at that point a security guard for a local hotel intervened, only to be punched in the face by Gatti. A small crowd that had gathered around the scene grew angry, with some throwing stones and even a bicycle at the boxer, the police spokeswoman said.
One stone hit Gatti in the back of the head, causing a wound that police originally said was caused by a small steak knife that was found near his body— and which police showed off to reporters the day after Gatti’s death.
The fracas eventually broke up, and Gatti and Rodrigues returned to the apartment in separate taxis.
In an telephone interview with The Associated Press as she walked out of jail Thursday, Rodrigues said Gatti may have killed himself because he feared she would leave him after their fight, one of many during a rocky two-year marriage.
“I believe that when we got home and he saw that he hurt me, he thought I would leave him, that I would tell him to just let me go, that I would separate from him,” she said. “He did that in a moment of weakness. He was drunk, maybe he didn’t know what he was doing, maybe he thought I would leave him the next day.”
According to records at the Court of Quebec’s criminal and penal division, Gatti was charged on April 16 for violating a restraining order that had been filed against him. Records didn’t indicate who filed the restraining order, but Gatti’s mother, Ida, confirmed it was Rodrigues who had taken one out against him.
Gatti, a Canadian who captured two world titles in his 16-year pro career, retired in 2007 with a record of 40-9.
“This case has been resolved,” Saraiva said. “While the evidence at the scene first led us to think Gatti was murdered, the autopsy results and a detailed crime scene analysis simply pointed to a different outcome.”
Associated Press Writers Rob Gillies in Toronto and Sean Farrell in Montreal contributed to this report.

(Boothwyn, PA) - Rodney King is known throughout the world as the man who pleaded with the nation, “Can’t we all get along?” Recently his sobriety was put to the test on “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” on VH1, where the gentle giant owned up to his addiction and sought extensive treatment in order to save his life and become a better father for his children. Now, he is ready for a new challenge; he’s stepping into the boxing ring in order to face some challenging opponents.

“It’s time now. And, I’m ready!” King exclaimed. “I’m ready to put my gloves on and face my challengers in the boxing ring.” King has always been an athlete and looks forward to his foray into celebrity boxing.

Upon being approached to fight with the Celebrity Boxing Federation (CBF), King issued a challenge to all comers and will be the headliner on the card of the upcoming Celebrity Boxing 11, presented by the CBF.

The event will take place on Saturday, September 12 at 8:00 p.m. at the Maple Zone Sports & Fitness Center in Boothwyn, PA.

“It doesn’t even bother me, not knowing who I’ll fight yet, because the result is a done deal,” Kings says with supreme confidence. “I’m winning. Period.”

King, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 250 pounds, will take on a to-be-determined celebrity challenger•as long as he weighs at least 200 pounds.

Those who deem themselves worthy of stepping into the ring against King are being asked to send an e-mail to [email protected].

Rodney King knows a little about street fighting, having grown up and spending portions of his life in tough, urban areas around California. That kind of personal experience gives him the ability to face his opponent head on as he enters the world of celebrity boxing.

“I’ve seen it all, man,” King says. “Going into that ring doesn’t scare me a bit.”

King has decided to present Boys & Girls Clubs of America with a portion of his celebrity boxing pay-per-view proceeds in order to support, inspire and help young people realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. 1. Wladimir Klitschko (53-3)

Klitschko has been the dominant heavyweight of the past few years and has two mandatory defenses to deal with because he holds two alphabet titles. One is Russian Alexander Povetkin and the other is American Eddie Chambers. It looks as though Chambers will get first crack in December, likely in Germany.
Next: TBA.

2. Vitali Klitschko (37-2)

With David Haye having run out on him, Klitschko and his team didn't miss a beat. Instead of facing the former cruiserweight champion in Germany on Sept. 12 on HBO, he'll instead face Cristobal Arreola two weeks later at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on HBO. Should be fun while it lasts.
Next: Sept. 26 vs. Arreola.

3. Alexander Povetkin (17-0)

The 2004 Olympic gold medalist and one of Wladimir Klitschko's mandatory challenger has hired ESPN's own Teddy Atlas to train him. Povetkin will relocate to the United States and is expected to fight this fall while awaiting a mandatory shot.
Next: TBA.

4. Eddie Chambers (35-1)

Chambers went to Germany and dismantled unbeaten but untested Alexander Dimitrenko for an impressive victory July 4. Chambers, who scored a clean knockdown in the 10th round against a much bigger man, secured a mandatory shot against Wladimir Klitschko, which could come in December.
Next: TBA.

5. Cristobal Arreola (27-0)

With Haye bailing on a fight with Vitali Klitschko, Arreola had the title bout fall in his lap. Arreola is from Southern California and should have strong fan support at the Staples Center.
Next: Sept. 26 vs. Klitschko.

6. Ruslan Chagaev (25-1-1)

The rancid WBA finally stripped Chagaev of the ridiculous "champion in recess" title, which made sense since Chagaev was destroyed by Wladimir Klitschko on June 20. What made no sense, however, is that the WBA also insanely kept Chagaev as its No. 1 contender. Anyone else want to throw up?
Next: TBA.

7. Nikolai Valuev (50-1)

Valuev will defend his title against Haye, who gets an easier fight with the lumbering Valuev than he would have had he kept his word and signed a deal he had to challenge Vitali Klitschko for his version of the title.
Next: Nov. 7 vs. Haye.

8. Samuel Peter (31-3)

The former titleholder shook off a two-fight losing streak by easily blowing out journeyman Marcus McGee via third-round knockout on July 25, in his first fight since signing with Top Rank. His second will come on Top Rank's next "Latin Fury" undercard.
Next: Sept. 12 vs. TBA.

9. Oleg Maskaev (36-6)

The former titlist lost an arbitration case that allowed Vitali Klitschko to move on to an optional defense rather than making him fight a mandatory against the wholly undeserving Maskaev, whose schedule is up in the air now that an eliminator with Arreola is unlikely.
Next: TBA.

10. John Ruiz (43-8-1)

Ruiz is the mandatory challenger for Valuev, and his side is angry that the WBA approved Valuev's bout with Haye. The Ruiz camp may go to court to have Ruiz's rights upheld. Can't blame them, although it should shock nobody that the WBA would do something a bit down and dirty.
Next: TBA.

I would love to see Mayweather get beat, but I don't think it is going to happen. He is a great fighter as much as I hate to admit. What I can't stand about him though is that he fails to let his hands go like he could and make a fight exciting. Maybe he has an undefeated record because of this, but I could care less to see him fight. If I am watching a Mayweather fight, it is because I am interested in his opponent. I know what I am going to get from Mayweather. Probably one of the most talented boxers ever who will never get much respect because he just isn't exciting enough and doesn't take chances.

I am not always a big fan of Dana, but he is hitting the nail right on the head here. I am a huge boxing fan and I don't think there is any problem with boxing and MMA coexisting, but boxing needs to take some advice from the UFC and watch what they are doing to attract so many new people to the sport. Boxing still has an arrogance to it that will be its downfall if someone doesn't step up and get them back on the right page.

09-10-2009, 09:48 PM
I'm a fan of both sports. I also believe they will both coexist just fine. But the fact is that boxing has gotten better since UFC came to be. There are more and more fights that are competitive in the lower weight classes than I have seen since the early 80s. UFC is the reason for this, IMO. Heavyweight division does suck though.

Dana is just being Dana speaking hyperbole and simplifying situations. Yes Mayweather puts up boring fights and yes Marquez is not known to the everyday sports fan but he IS a damn good fighter, easily top 3 or 4 pound per pound today. Personally I can't wait to see this fight!

Another thing, Mayweather is fighting this guy because HE has the choice. He is FREE to fight who he wants. Unlike UFC fighters who are told who to fight by Dana.

Darren Sutherland found dead

Monday, 14 September 2009 23:12
Irish Olympic medal-winning boxer Darren Sutherland was found dead at home today by his manager.

The 27-year-old, who won bronze for Ireland at the 2008 Games in Beijing, was found dead at his flat in Bromley, south London, by Frank Maloney.

In a statement, the boxing promoter said: 'It is very sad and unexpected.

'At this sad time my thoughts are with Darren's family and I hope their privacy at this very difficult time will be respected by the media.

'It is a tragedy for Ireland and the world of boxing.'

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said Sutherland was pronounced dead at just after 3pm. His death is not being treated as suspicious. His family have been informed.

The fighter made his professional debut in Dublin last December, winning by a knockout.
Sutherland won a bronze medal for Ireland in the middleweight division at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Minister for Sport Martin Cullen extended his sympathy to Sutherland's family. 'I was very saddened to hear of the death of boxer Darren Sutherland and offer my deepest condolences to his family,' he said in a statement.
'Ireland has lost a sportsman of wonderful ability, a clever and popular man with a future of real potential. His early death deprives us of a magnificent talent. May he rest in peace.'

His website now has a guestbook on the front page for anyone who wants to leave a message: http://www.darrensutherland.com/guestbook/index2.php

This happened last night but I wasn't at home to hear the bad news. He was proud to represent Ireland and Dublin so it's a sad loss for the sport and country, he was a boxer with potential. All the best to his friends and family.

WWE Superstar and one-half of D-Generation X, Triple H, will be accompanying a familiar face to WWE fans to a huge PPV main event this Saturday night.

"The Game" is apparently going to be walking to the ring with Floyd Mayweather Jr. for his fight with Juan Manual Marquez during the main event of Saturday night's HBO boxing PPV, which also features fights from top stars such as Zab Judah and Rocky Juarez.

Mayweather stated, "[Triple H] is one of the greatest guys in the world." The praise continued with, "it'd be an honor to have him by my side."

HHH responded with, "It is an honor to walk the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world back into the ring. Floyd 'Money' Mayweather has shown WWE tremendous support and it is my pleasure to return the favor this Saturday by standing at his side as he defeats Marquez in what I am sure will be boxing's fight of the year."

This isn't the first time this has happened recently, as "The Animal" Batista walked to the ring with Manny Pacquaio for his impressive one-round knockout of Ricky "Hitman" Hatton back in May.

True, I think he passed the same day as Swayze as well as another Irish personality. This has been classed as a suicide case though as Darren was found dead in his apartment alone which really makes it an even sadder case. I've read that he felt pressured by the publicity after the Olympics and going pro, he was treated for depression before the incident so hopefully this will give the sporting authorities in this country and others incentive to improve the psychiatric help available for athletes.

Defending champion Katie Taylor is through to the European Championships lightweight final following an 8-0 semi-final win over Denica Eliseeva of Bulgaria in Nikalaev City in the Ukraine this morning.

Taylor, who beat Eliseeva 8-1 in in June to claim her second European Union gold medal on the trot, dominated all four rounds at the Nadezhda Sports Complex to guarantee herself at least silver.

The Bray woman, who is targeting her fourth European title in a row, will meet Meryem Aslan Zeybek of Turkey in Sunday's 60Kg final.

Zeybek came from behind to beat Aleksandra Sydorenko of the Ukraine 6-4.

Taylor has yet to concede a point in the Ukraine. She stopped Kosovare Buzuku of Sweden in the first round of their quarter-final on Thursday.

The Bray native and reigning World champion was 4-0 when the bout was halted.

Saturday is a rest day at the Championships, with Sunday's finals beginning at 10am Irish time

Best of luck katie

I love watching Marquez fight. But I think mayweather will be too big and fast for Marquez. Marquez does have a chance tho. If all fights were decided on physical attributes, than they'd be no point in watching any fight.

LAS VEGAS – Floyd Mayweather Jr. made the contracted weight of 147 pounds for his HBO Pay-Per-View fight on Saturday with Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
But when Mayweather weighed 146 pounds at Friday’s weigh-in, he was forced to pay a six-figure penalty to Marquez for coming in at more than 144 pounds, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said.
Schaefer said the contract the fighters signed in May was for the bout to be at a limit of 147 pounds. But in that contract, each man agreed to a substantial penalty clause for every pound, or fraction thereof, more than 144.
More From Kevin Iole

Mayweather has fought at welterweight since 2005, but Marquez never has and only has fought three times at more than 130. He weighed
134 in a Dec. 9, 1996, bout against Rodrigo Valenzuela. He was 135 when he stopped Joel Casamayor on Sept. 13, 2008, and was 134 when he stopped Juan Diaz on Feb. 28.
On Friday, Marquez weighed 142.
There never was any question whether Marquez could make the weight. It has been more than four years since Mayweather weighed less than 146.
“There were no surprises,” Schaefer said. “The contract the fighters signed for the fight so many months ago called it a welterweight fight. But there was a stipulation that there would be a penalty for weighing over 144.
“Floyd’s team informed us today that he would not be able to make 144, and because of that, there was a substantial penalty. If he would have been 147, it would have been even bigger.”
Thus, Mayweather was in the odd position Friday of making the contracted weight but still paying a penalty.
If either man had weighed in excess of 147, he would have been required to sweat off the excess weight to reach 147 exactly. That is not normally the case unless a fight is for a championship, which Saturday’s fight is not.
Keith Kizer, the executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission, said there was no issue with the weight from a commission standpoint. Kizer said he went to Marquez’s locker room prior to the weigh-in and asked him if he was aware that Mayweather would weigh more than 144.
Kizer said Marquez told him he had no problem with it.
Mayweather also arrived at the MGM Grand about an hour later than the reporting time given to him by the commission.

LAS VEGAS (AP)—Money came back with a guarantee. Floyd Mayweather Jr. told the world he was still its best boxer despite taking 21 months off, and he backed up every boast with every jab in an impressive victory.
Although next time out, hopefully he’ll pick on somebody his own size.
Mayweather overpowered the smaller, lighter Juan Manuel Marquez for an unanimous decision Saturday night, maintaining his perfect record in his comeback from retirement.
Mayweather knocked down Marquez in the second round and then peppered him with countless damaging shots to remain unbeaten (40-0, 25 KOs). Still, his impressive effort couldn’t be viewed without weighing the obvious disadvantages in height and strength faced by the talented Marquez, a 130-pounder just 18 months ago who moved up two weight classes for this once-in-a-career payday at the MGM Grand Garden.

“Marquez is tough as nails,” Mayweather said. “He’s a great little man. He was really hard to fight, and he kept taking some unbelievable shots.”
At Friday’s weigh-in, Marquez (50-5-1) was four pounds lighter than Mayweather, who paid a $600,000 penalty for missing the bout weight of 144 pounds. Simple physics took over from there. Though Marquez stayed on his feet for 12 one-sided rounds, Money Mayweather’s win was never in doubt.
“He’s a great small man,” Mayweather said. “Don’t forget, I came from a small weight class too, so I know when you’re in front of a great fighter. I think he brought his best tonight.”
Mayweather had an astonishing edge in punch stats, landing 290 of his 493 blows (59 percent) while allowing just 12 percent of Marquez’s 583 punches to land. Mayweather landed more jabs in each round than Marquez landed total punches, and just 16 percent of Marquez’s power shots even got to Mayweather.
Mayweather often appeared to be toying with Marquez, who’s generally considered among the world’s top handful of fighters. Just 18 months ago, Marquez lost a narrow decision to unofficial pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao—another mighty mite who’s likely Mayweather’s top choice for his next bout.
Pacquiao accepted a similarly mismatched challenge last year when he demolished Oscar De La Hoya, but the Golden Boy acknowledges his skills have diminished. Mayweather clearly is still at the top of his game.
“I’ve been off for two years, so I felt like it took me a couple of rounds to really know I was back in the ring again,” Mayweather said. “I know I’ll get better.”
Mayweather dominated his undersized Mexican opponent in his first fight since stopping Ricky Hatton in December 2007. He then took a lengthy break from the sport that’s dominated his life since he was a toddler, but returned for another eight-figure payday that should assuage the IRS while setting up another megafight.

Mayweather refused to re-weigh himself Saturday night, so the true size of his advantage might never be known. Fighters often gain several pounds between the weigh-in and their bouts.
But his size advantage was obvious from the opening bell, when it became clear Marquez would struggle just to get close enough to throw good combinations.
“He surprised me with the first knockdown,” Marquez said. “He hurt me in that round, but not any other time. I don’t want to make any excuses, but the weight was the problem. He’s too fast.”
Judge Burt Clements gave every round to Mayweather, 120-107. Dave Moretti threw the eighth round to Marquez for a 119-108 total, while William Lerch gave two rounds to Marquez, 118-109. The Associated Press had a whitewash, 120-107.
Mayweather abruptly knocked down Marquez midway through the second round when Marquez walked into a left hook, but Mayweather largely stuck to his jab, leaned back in his familiar defensive posture and picked apart another opponent.

Marquez had a bloody nose by the bout’s midway point, and Mayweather landed several hard shots late in the sixth. Whenever Marquez appeared to land a combination, Mayweather invariably backed away with a grin.
“When I hit him, he laughed, but I knew he felt my punches,” Marquez said. “We tried to work the speed, but the difference was the weight.”
Marquez added a brave defeat to a career noted for its disappointments as much as its triumphs. Marquez still seethes over his 0-1-1 record in two fights against Pacquiao, and he followed Pacquiao’s path up in weight in search of bigger bouts, which he got in recent wins over Joel Casamayor and Juan Diaz.
Mayweather chose Marquez for his return bout after flirting with Pacquiao, who will fight Miguel Cotto in the same arena less than two months from now.
A Mayweather-Pacquiao fight would be the biggest in the sport, but a more natural opponent also wants a little Money. Sugar Shane Mosley called out Mayweather in the ring immediately after the fight, with Golden Boy representatives forced to separate the two.
The lukewarm public response to the bout underlined industry concerns Mayweather can’t sell a pay-per-view on his own. The Grand Garden wasn’t sold out just a few days before the fight, and large swaths of empty seats greeted the undercard fighters, though they were mostly filled before Mayweather entered the ring.

London, Sep. 22 : He might have been a convicted rapist and a wife beater, but world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson now insists that life has transformed him into a family man.

"As far as my personal life goes, everything has changed. I've an eight-month-old baby and a new wife. I'm like Mr Mom now. That's good for me and what I need," The Sun quoted Tyson, 43, as saying.

Tyson's self-proclaimed softie tag is quite a swing from his iron man image. His fans best remember him for biting off a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear during a title bout in 1997.

Tyson recently made the draw for Prizefighter Heavyweights III, an eight-man, one-night tournament at London's ExCel on October 2.

The draw set up a potential final between Brits Danny Williams and Audley Harrison.

"That would be one hell of a final. Danny is great fighter, while Audley has tons of ability and style," Tyson said.

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. agreed to pay $5.6 million in back taxes before the Internal Revenue Service was poised to take the money from his purse after his Saturday comeback fight against Juan Manuel Marquez.

The IRS sent the Nevada Athletic Commission a levy notice on Sept. 4 ordering Mayweather's unpaid taxes from 2007 to be deducted from his $10 million fight purse, commission executive director Keith Kizer told The Associated Press.

Kizer said the IRS backed off one week later, after Mayweather agreed to pay the money. Mayweather won the fight in a unanimous decision.
Mayweather's tax attorney, Jeffrey Morse, told the AP on Tuesday that federal officials never intended to take Mayweather's purse, and the five-division champion has satisfied all his IRS debts.

"Floyd has - and I will absolutely attest to it - more than satisfied every tax obligation that he has," Morse said. "As of today, as of some time ago, which I can't tell you when, he owes zero to the IRS."
Morse said he expected the IRS to release a $6.17 million lien filed with the county recorder's office in Las Vegas in October last year.
Records on Tuesday showed the lien was still open.
IRS spokesman Raphael Tulino said he could not comment on individual tax matters.

A copy of the levy notice obtained by the AP shows the IRS was seeking less than what it filed for in its lien. The notice dated Aug. 25 said Mayweather owed $4.71 million in unpaid taxes and $930,000 in statutory additions calculated through Sept. 25.

"Although we have given the notice and demand required by the (Internal Revenue) Code, the amount owed hasn't been paid," the notice to boxing regulators said. "This levy requires you to turn over to us this person's property and rights to property that you have or which you are already obligated to pay this person."

Kizer said the IRS did not notify the commission until fight week that the levy would not be necessary. Mayweather and all other fighters on the card were fully paid, he said.

Morse said Mayweather owed substantially less than the $5.6 million levy, but would not say why it was valued at less than the original lien.
Morse said the levy itself was part of Mayweather's agreement with the IRS, not an impetus for the boxer nicknamed "Money" to settle the debt. Morse said the levy was used by the IRS as collateral.

"Unfortunately, if we knew that this information would be out there and disclosed to reporters, we probably wouldn't have entered into that agreement," Morse said. "Floyd likes to keep his private business private."
Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs) has faced liens in the past and paid them off, according to recorder records in Clark County. The IRS filed liens totaling nearly $6.3 million for unpaid taxes from 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2006, and four homeowners associations also filed claims against the boxer that were later resolved, county records show.

The IRS in August released Mayweather from a lien for nearly $15,900 for unpaid taxes from 2001, county records show. Also last month, a homeowners association rescinded a lien against Mayweather valued at nearly $4,200 last year.

Two other homeowners associations still have open liens against the boxer worth $5,200, according to Clark County records.

A New Jersey Superior Court judgment from 2007 for a state tax debt of $193,000 was still unpaid, according to the court. Morse declined to comment on the judgment.

Mayweather also faces a lawsuit in Las Vegas from JP Morgan Chase, alleging he owes more than $167,000 on an unpaid loan for a half-million dollar luxury car from 2007. The lawsuit filed Sept. 9 alleges Mayweather bought a Mercedes Maybach 57S in February 2007 and stopped making monthly payments of more than $9,000 a year later.
Mayweather's manager, Leonard Ellerbe, said Tuesday that Mayweather had not been served with the lawsuit and declined to comment.

Tyson has been legally married three times and has had six children with several different women. His first marriage was to actress Robin Givens from February 7, 1988 to February 14, 1989. Givens was known for her work on the sitcom Head of the Class. Tyson's marriage to Givens was especially tumultuous with allegations of violence, spousal abuse and mental instability on Tyson's part and allegations of gold digging against Givens. Matters came to a head when Tyson and Givens gave a joint interview with Barbara Walters on the ABC TV newsmagazine show 20/20 in September 1988, in which Givens described life with Tyson as "torture, pure hell, worse than anything I could possibly imagine."Givens also described Tyson as "manic depressive" on national television while Tyson looked on with an intent and calm expression. A month later, Givens announced that she was seeking a divorce from the allegedly abusive Tyson. They had no children but she claims to have had a miscarriage while Tyson claims she was never pregnant and only used that to get him to marry her.
His second marriage was to Monica Turner from April 19, 1997 to January 14, 2003. At the time of the divorce filing, Turner worked as a pediatric resident at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington DC. She is also the sister of Michael Steele, the former Lieutenant Governor of Maryland and current Republican National Committee Chairman. Turner filed for divorce from Tyson in January 2002, claiming that he committed adultery during their five-year marriage, an act that "has neither been forgiven nor condoned." The couple had two children: Rayna (born February 14, 1996) and Amir (August 5, 1997). Tyson's six children include His oldest child, daughter Miss Michael Tyson also known as "mickey", Rayna,Amir,Miguel, Exodus, and Milan.
On May 25, 2009, Tyson's 4-year-old daughter, Exodus, was found by her 7-year-old brother, Miguel, unconscious and tangled in a cord, dangling from an exercise treadmill. The child's mother untangled her, administered CPR, and called for medical attention. Exodus was listed in "extremely critical condition" and was on life support at Phoenix's St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. She subsequently died of her injuries on May 26, 2009. Ten days later, Tyson wed for the third time, to girlfriend Lakiha Spicer, age 32, exchanging vows on Saturday, June 6, 2009, in a short, private ceremony, at the La Bella Wedding Chapel at the Las Vegas Hilton hotel-casino. Spicer was a resident of nearby suburban Henderson, NV. County marriage records in Las Vegas show the couple got a marriage license just 30 minutes before their ceremony.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Chris Arreola has weighed in at a surprisingly slim 251 pounds for his WBC heavyweight title fight against Vitali Klitschko this weekend.

Arreola poked fun at his reputation for a paunchy physique when he mounted the scale outside Staples Center on Thursday with his shirt on, weighing in at 277 pounds. Arreola then removed his shirt to reveal a large weight vest, taking it off to reveal a considerably fitter build.

Klitschko is favored to defend his title in Saturday's fight, and the Ukrainian champion weighed in at 252 pounds with a more sculpted build.

Although both fighters live in Southern California, Arreola was the favorite of a small but vocal crowd hoping he'll become the first Mexican-American heavyweight champion.

Vitali is the most exciting fighter in that division. Arreola has .000001% chance of winning this. Vitali is a very special fighter. The man has never been knocked down, and has one of the highest ko percentages in heavyweight history. It will be another sadistic destruction. Vitali has a mean streak in him that Wladimir doesn't have. He likes to take his time brutalizing someone and setting them up for the ko.

Also on a cool note Vitali donated something like 300 tickets to california firefighters for the fight.

As Chris Arreola trains for his fight with Vitali Klitschko on September 26th at the Staples Center, he has a lot on his mind. The fight is for Klitschko's WBC heavyweight belt, and taking that belt would make Arreola the first man of Mexican descent in history to win a share of the heavyweight title.

It's a goal that Arreola first set his sights on when he laced up the gloves as an eight-year-old growing up in East L.A. For critics who think he's being rushed along too quickly in this fight with Klitschko, he cites his many years of fighting, dating back to those childhood days, and claims that right now he's as ready for a big title fight as he'll ever be.

"Maybe I've never fought a top-ten heavyweight," he says, "but I've beaten a lot of undefeated fighters, and a lot of these undefeated guys could beat most of the top-ten guys in the world. I've been boxing for sixteen, seventeen years now. So if not now, then what am I boxing for? I've paid my dues over the course of my life and I'm ready."

But one of the main criticisms of Arreola is that he doesn't pay his dues, at least not where it counts for a fighter—in the gym. Just a few months before the Klitschko fight, Arreola was seen in public looking heavier than ever. His weight and flabby upper body have made talking points for critics in each of his successive fights as he's gained more and more renown. They ask how a man who isn't willing to dedicate himself to his overall fitness can ever hope to be a true champion.

Now that he's fighting for a title on the big stage, this question is one of the main topics of conversation when writers assess his chances at beating the 6'7" leviathan. It's a question that irritates Arreola , because in his mind, it completely misses the point. "It does bug me that they fixate on my weight and my physical appearance," he says, "because not once have I ever shown that I was tired in the ring. Not once have I changed the way that I fight. They're more fixated on my weight than they are on my performance."

"I picture myself just breaking him down little by little, chipping away and chipping away, and then finally finding that opening that I'll be looking for." — Chris Arreola

Arreola has a point. Whatever his body may look like when he fights, it's hard to argue with the results. Twenty-seven bouts, twenty-four knockouts, and most of them of the crowd-pleasing,"Oh-my-God-did-you-see-that?" variety that turns winning fighters into YouTube sensations and must-see stars. There's no question that Arreola has the total package to become a huge star on the American scene, possessing both gigantic punching power and a gigantic personality. The knockouts are self-evident, and so is his charisma.

"I've always wanted to do a set of stand-up comedy," he admits. "Just go in there on amateur night and try to do a routine. It's sort of seems like boxing actually, because it's just you and the stage. No one else can come in there and help you."

Anyone who's ever hung around the guy knows that being a comedian would not be an unlikely alternative career choice. Joking around is a way of life for Chris Arreola. As he tells it, he and his trainer bust on each other so hard that observers often wonder how they maintain their relationship. "I've always been a class clown type. Me and my friends, me and Henry, my trainer, we're ball-busters. And it's all in good fun, believe me. People look at what we say to each other and they say, "How are you guys friends?"

Then again, when talk turns to his boxing career, the jokes go out the window. Asked if he'll go right after Wladimir Klitschko if he beats Vitali, he turns serious in a heartbeat. "The thing about it is, man, I don't look at this as 'if' I beat Vitali. It's 'when.' When I win this fight, if Wladimir Klitschko is the next fight in front of me, then so be it, because what I look forward to is being the undisputed heavyweight champion."

His confidence heading into his first world title shot is undeniable. Ironically, for a man who is constantly facing questions about his weight, a lot of that confidence has to do with his fitness level and how he sees the Kltischko fight playing out. "I'm prepared to go into deep water with him, and I'm pretty sure that we're going to go deep into the fight. But it's not going the full twelve rounds, that's for sure. I picture myself just breaking him down little by little, chipping away and chipping away, and then finally finding that opening that I'll be looking for."

Despite his reputation as the life of the party, Arreola hasn't planned any particular victory celebration yet, beyond some immediate post-fight sustenance. "After I get the title, when I get to the dressing room, I'm going to have some beer on ice ready for me. So I'm warning you, I might stumble into the press conference pretty buzzed."

After that, the sky's the limit. As a big-punching Mexican-American who is all kill-or-be-killed fury in the ring and affable, approachable and completely hilarious out of it, Arreola has the potential to become the first heavyweight to capture the American imagination since Mike Tyson. So provided everything goes according to plan, just how long does Arreola imagine his boxing career lasting? "I'm thinking like my mid-thirties. Seven more years and I'm out. And then when I get to my time, I'll just, you know, sit next to Max Kellerman and Jim Lampley and announce the fights with them."

LOS ANGELES – Vitali Klitschko nearly matched Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s perfection of a week earlier, keeping a hard jab in Cris Arreola’s face and stopping him at the end of the 10th round in their bout Saturday for the World Boxing Council heavyweight title at the Staples Center.
Klitschko bloodied Arreola’s face early, had his eyes swelling shut by the midpoint and delivered a frightful beating. Arreola, who seemed to be favoring his left hand from about the fifth round, could never land one of his patented power shots to pull off his dream.
More From Kevin Iole

Arreola’s trainer Henry Ramirez wouldn’t let his man head back out for the 11th round against the 250-pound giant.
“He was taking too much punishment,” Ramirez said. “When I told him I was going to stop the fight, he was irate. It was not an easy decision, but we had discussed it and I had to do it.”
The large crowd was clearly behind Arreola, but Klitschko put on one of his best performances in totally deflating the Southern California native. Klitschko was hardly light on his feet, but he circled, jabbed, raked Arreola with the occasional right hand and generally made life miserable for him.
Klitschko landed 301 of 802 punches, according to CompuBox. Arreola only managed to land 86 of his 331 punches.
Klitschko landed a punishing 53 percent of his power punches (151 of 283). He wasn’t surprised that Arreola kept coming back for more and had gained so much respect for the challenger that he didn’t expect it to be stopped.
“I was surprised he did not come out,” Klitschko said. “This was a hard fight, like I expected. I know I was hurting him a lot, but he has a great, great chin. He’s a tough fighter, but I worked the body.”
Klitschko was well ahead on all three scorecards. He was up 99-91 on the cards of Ken Morita and Anek Hongtongkam and was up 100-89 in the view of Italian judge Guido Cavalieri. Yahoo! Sports had it 99-91 for Klitschko.

The fight that boxing experts say was a mismatch turned out to be exactly like that as Floyd Mayweather, Jr asserted his superiority over the smaller Juan Manuel Marquez in terms of speed and technical skill to carv out a masterful shutout victory over the proud Mexican during the Mexican Independence Day weekend at the MGM Grand Garden Arena here Saturday night by a 12 round unanimous decision.
Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to pay Juan Manuel Marquez a reported $600,000 after weighing in two pounds too heavy ahead of Saturday night's welterweight showdown in Las Vegas. This will be added to Marquez's $3.2 million purse. Mayweather made $5 million for the fight.
Mayweather now looks forward to making more megafights -- against the winner of Pacquiao-Cotto on Nov. 14 or with Sugar Share Mosely who climbed the ring after the fight to personally challenge Mayweather.
Mayweather remains undefeated at 40 and 0 while Marquez dropped to 50-5-1.

Vitali Klitschko scored a convincing victory to retain his WBC heavyweight title but claimed his 10-round stoppage of Chris Arreola was not as straightforward as it appeared.
Klitschko, just three fights into a comeback following a four-year retirement from the ring, was in impressive form as he out-fought and out-thought his Mexican-American rival at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, Arreola's corner calling it quits at the end of the 10th after a game but ineffective challenge.

The 37th stoppage of the Ukrainian's professional career took his record to 38-2 as he outclassed Arreola, 10 years his junior at 28, using his height and reach advantage to great effect as he brought to an end a 27-fight unbeaten professional run.

Yet Klitschko, whose younger brother Wladimir holds the IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles, said: 'It's never easy. You have to be at your best.
'Arreola had his chance, he had a great performance and I was very surprised. He had a great chin and after my right hook, many opponents go to the floor but he still stayed up. Big respect.

'All my left jabs he was very well prepared for.

Juan Carlos Salgado shocks Jorge Linares in Japan!

Undefeated but relatively unknown Juan Carlos Salgado obliterated highly regarded previously unbeaten Jorge Linares to lift his WBA world super featherweight title moments ago in Japan. Both fighters started out the opening round feeling each other out, but forty seconds in to the fight Salgado landed a sudden and telling lead left hook that was perfectly placed between Linares’ guard. The powerful blow caught the defending champion on the temple and sent him crashing to the canvass. Linares got up on unsteady legs, and Salgado pounced on him in the corner, quickly pummeling him down for a second time. Linares was badly hurt and the bout was immediately waved off. The official time was 1:13 of Round 1. With the victory Salgado improved to 21-0-1 (15 KOs) while Linares (who was recently signed by Golden Boy Promotions) dropped to 27-1 (18 KOs).

Juan Manuel Lopez escapes with a decision over Rogers Mtagwa in Madison Square Garden. More details to follow.

What was expected to be a casual defense for the undefeated WBO superbantam champion Juan Manuel Lopez of Puerto Rico against Roger Mtagawa of Philadelphia who had 12 losses in his record before the fight, turned out to be an epic 12-round battle when Lopez was stretched out to his limit and clung out for his dear life in the last round to win by majority decision at the Madison Square Garden Arena in New York Saturday night. The scores were 115-115, 114-113, 115-111 for Lopez.

Lopez tagged Mtagwa with bombs early in the fight but the Tanzanian warrior took JuanMa's strongest punches and continued coming in making the Boricua to fight smart by fighting from the distance in the first half of the fight. In the fifth round, Mtagwa was called for a knockdown by the referee in what appeared to be not coming from a punch.

In the seventh round, Mtagwa connected with several right bombs that changed the complexion of the fight when Lopez accepted Mtagwa's challenged to a brawl. Bombs after bombs where exchanged by both fighters from the 8th round onwards that saw both fighters wobbly and staggered at times but at the same time showed both fighters toughness and stamina in the ring.

In the 11th round, the first time Lopez was extended this far in his entire professional career, Mtagwa connected with some solid shots that sent Lopez staggering towards the rope in the last seconds of the round only to be saved by the bell.

The last round saw Lopez clearly out of his breath and was in danger of being knocked out at any given moment but although Mtagwa connected with many heavy shots to the retreating Lopez, the undefeated Boricua dug deep to scarily survived the round.

Mtagwa, during the post-fight interview, asked for a rematch but Top Rank president Bob Arum said they are looking to fight WBO featherweight champion Steven Luevano.

Los Angeles - A year and a half lay-off, the specter of three grueling fights against Rafael Marquez, a tough Colombian challenger, and a nasty cut over his left eye were not enough to keep Israel Vazquez from being victorious in his return to the ring Saturday night at the Nokia Theatre in Downtown, Los Angeles.

Fighting out of Huntington Park, California via Mexico City, Mexico, Vazquez has to work the head and body of Colombian Angel Priolo over nine hard rounds before sending his foe to the canvas three times and forcing the hand of referee Pat Russel to stop the fight.

Though landing the stronger, cleaner shots over the length of the contest, Vazquez has to weather the tenacity of Priolo who kept the punches coming. Questions were beginning to arise - did Vazquez carry his punch up from super bantamweight to featherweight? Had Vazquez left the best of his career in the ring with Rafael Marquez?

But in the end, Vazquez did what Vazquez does, wear down his opponent and score knockdowns with the fight winding down.

Vazquez improves to 44 wins and four losses with 32 wins by knockout and now looks to establish himself as a world class featherweight following his domination of the super bantamweight division

11-15-2009, 05:26 PM
by Dan Wetzel, Yahoo Sports

LAS VEGAS – Just minutes after Manny Pacquiao had violently turned Miguel Cotto’s face into raw hamburger, the chant rose up from the stands of the MGM Grand Garden Arena:
“We want Floyd.”
Pacquiao had delivered a systematic demolition job of Cotto, winning the World Boxing Organization welterweight title via 12th round TKO with round after round of devastating shots against a bigger, stronger man.
It was the second electrifying boxing performance of the fall. The first was Floyd Mayweather Jr’s 12-round decision over Juan Manuel Marquez in September. That fight broke the rare 1 million pay-per-view bar, a number that will likely be exceeded by this fight too.
So now the stage is set for a super fight that could set box office records – Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. It’s the dream bout between the two best pound-for-pound champions in the sport, hopefully sometime in 2010.
“If Floyd Mayweather wants to fight Manny Pacquiao he knows who to call,” said Bob Arum, the CEO of Top Rank Boxing, the promotion which handles Pacquiao.
Within minutes, Ross Greenberg, the head of HBO Sports said he had spoken to Richard Shaefer of Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Mayweather.
“Richard told me point blank, Bob Arum will be getting that call Monday,” Greenberg said. “He plans on meeting next week with Bob to make the Mayweather fight.”
There will, no doubt, be posturing and preening and negotiating over the split. There are no small egos in this battle; no small checks, either.
“Benjamin Franklin is the most important personality [in the negotiation],” said Greenberg, whose company would handle the pay-per-view. “His face, multiplied by 15 million brings people to the table. Each guy needs to look at the big picture and the big picture is a boat load of cash and a fight too important for the sport.”
Greenberg said the 2007 fight between Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya resulted in an $80 million purse.
“Is this one smaller?” Greenberg said, shaking his head. “Bigger.”
For boxing fans who care little about who gets more of the final millions and just want to see two legendary fighters in the prime of their careers, this will be a tantalizing wait.
“I think that is the fight the world wants to see,” Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, said.
Pacquiao’s performance here was a thing of beauty, the continuation of a run of brilliance. He chopped a big, powerful opponent down with a combination of speed, smarts and toughness to take shots of his own.
He didn’t shy away from leaning on the ropes and mixing it up with Cotto because he said he wanted to prove he can fight a physical fight and was tired of hearing about Cotto’s supposed strength.
“I yelled at him every time, why are you fighting his fight?” Roach said. “Manny says, ‘I can handle it.’ I said, ‘Well, prove it.’ And he did.”
Post-fight, Cotto was sent to a local trauma unit. Pacquiao performed an eight-song set with his band at an outdoor concert at Mandalay Bay.
The night left little doubt about his genius.
Pacquiao, 30, who has won titles in a record six or seven weight classes (depending on which version of history you believe), said his 5-foot-6 frame can’t handle a weight higher than 145, so he’s running out of challengers.
The only real one left is Mayweather, 32, the 5-foot-7 welterweight who presents his own combination of historic quickness, boxing smarts and defensive skills.
Likewise, Pac-man is about the only real threat to Mayweather, who has dominated boxing in putting together a 40-0 record. Nearly two years ago, Mayweather was so bored from the lack of challengers, he retired for a stretch.
In his absence, Pacquiao rose, defeating both De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton in a much more brutal manner than Mayweather did. Now it’s Pac-man (50-3-2) who many call the pound-for-pound king, a fictional title that Mayweather insists is still his.
Now they can prove it.
Both are known for their ability to throw and land punches from unusual angles, from avoiding contact and for making each punch count. It would be speed against speed, true boxer against true boxer, two all-time greats, lined up and ready.
Each fighter’s colorful entourage had already started the debates and trash talk.
Floyd Mayweather Sr. launched into a circular rant that essentially accused Pacquiao of being on HGH. “I’ve been in boxing since I was 15 years old, I’ve never seen anything like it,” he said of Pacquiao’s new-found size and chin. Not that Senior said it would matter if Manny fought his son.
“When it’s time for us to fight, I’m going to show you all who the master is,” Mayweather Sr. said.
For good measure Mayweather Sr. claimed Roach was only a great trainer because he has a great fighter.
“Tell him to go [expletive] himself,” Roach said.
Roach said the game plan against Mayweather is obvious, catch him if you can.
“Mayweather is a very defensive fighter,” Roach said. “He doesn’t like to engage much. You have to pressure him. I think we have the hand speed to do that. We’d have to set traps for him and fight every minute of every round. I hear he [trains like] a machine too. I’d like to see who lasts longer.”
Roach also feels that with the chin Pacquiao showed against Cotto, that forcing the action against the softer hitting Mayweather won’t present a risk.
“Floyd can’t break a nail, he hurts his hands all the time,” Roach said. “He can’t knock Manny Pacquiao out.”
Pacquiao said he was taking a vacation and would fight whoever Arum set up for him. Mayweather Jr. did not attend the fight even though he lives in Las Vegas. His father said he did watch at home though and the loquacious boxer would have plenty to say in the future.
No one doubts that one.
And for once, it seems that boxing’s suicidal politics and factions won’t stand in the way of the fight everyone wants to see.
Pacquiao vs. Mayweather. See you in 2010.

Pac-Man is amazing and PBF is gifted.

Hard to pick'em, but I'm leaning towards PBF due to his quickness and elusiveness. Pac-Man will be there to be hit, but I'm not sure he can get in the big shots on Mayweather UNLESS PBF let's him, which he's prone to do by sitting on the ropes.
PBF is much lazier than Pac-Man, but if PBF is focused, then I'd pick him by a slight margin.

WARD DETHRONES KESSLER BY TECHNICAL DECISION IN SUPER 6 SHOWDOWN

In a virtuoso performance, the last U.S. Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward added pro gold to his resume completely dismantling Mikkel Kessler to win the WBA Super Middleweight title before a raucous crowd of 10,277 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. Not only did the win earn Ward two points in the Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament, but it may have elevated him into the elite category

Fighting before his hometown crowd, Ward (20-0, 13 KOs) dominated from the second round on in surprising fashion. Kessler (42-1, 32 KOs) of Copenhagen, Denmark was the odds-on betting favorite coming into the Super Six World Boxing Classic, but was completely outclassed in every regard by the Oakland native.
After a pretty even first round, Ward, 166 ½, turned offensive, boxing and moving on the slower Kessler, 167. One of the only bright spots at any point in the fight for Kessler was his ability to force Ward to the ropes in the first few rounds. However, Kessler was never able hurt Ward in any of those instances. As a sign of things to come, Ward closed the second by measuring Kessler with his left and landing a laser right behind it. By the end of the third round, Ward had burned off all of his nervous energy and settled in like a proven veteran.
Ward maintained the momentum into the third and never relinquished control as his speed kept Kessler out of any type of rhythm. As the fight progressed Ward continually beat Kessler by getting in shots on the inside and manhandling him at long range as well. Ward staggered Kessler with a minute left in the fourth. At the close of the round, Kessler returned to his corner with a cut below his right eye.
By the fifth, Kessler was no longer forcing Ward to the ropes and the Oakland native was eating the Dane alive in the center of the ring. It was quite apparent that Kessler stood almost no chance fighting at that geography. In another veteran move, Ward kept Kessler at range with his right hand and busted him up with the right. Kessler could not get past Ward’s extended left hand and when he tried the results were not what he had hoped for.
After a short burst to start the sixth, Kessler’s morale low was in the dumps. By the end of round eight, Kessler looked like a fighter that wanted someone to save him from further punishment. Rounds nine and ten were just more of the same, as Ward continued to exact his dominance over his beaten adversary. Referee Jack Reiss called time 1:42 into round eleven give the ringside doctor a look at Kessler. Without much hesitation, the doctor called the fight. However, the referee had ruled the original cut was a result of a headbutt (which the earlier replay seemed to confirm). Thus, the fight went to the scorecards.
Swedish judge Mikael Hook somehow scored the bout 97-93. Better known South African judge Stanley Christodoulou and Californian Steve Morrow agreed with tallies of 98-92 all for Ward. The cut ruling may have cost Ward the extra point a knockout would have earned him in the tournament since a stoppage seemed eminent.

SYDNEY -- Australian Danny Green stopped Roy Jones Jr. in the first round of their IBO world cruiserweight title fight Wednesday, preventing the 40-year-old American from claiming his ninth title across five weight classes from middleweight to heavyweight.
The 36-year-old Green retained his title and improved to 28-3 with his technical knockout over Jones at the Acer Arena, in the American's first professional fight on foreign soil in his 20-year career.
It was only Jones' sixth loss since 1989, along with 54 wins, 40 by knockout.
Green floored Jones with a right hand to the head after one minute. Green moved in to apply more pressure, and following a series of blows, English referee Howard Foster stopped the bout after just 122 seconds.
Jones offered no excuses for a defeat which could signal the end of his career.
"We don't make excuses, it was a great performance by Danny," Jones said.
Green was almost apologetic for handing such a defeat to one of his boxing role models.
"He's one of the greatest fighters of all time and the opportunity to fight him in Australia, thanks, Roy Jones Jr.," Green told the crowd.
"I almost feel bad doing that, that almost hurt me to do that to someone whom I aspire to look up to as a professional fighter inside and outside the ring. He's a bloody legend."
After nearly a one-hour delay following an undercard bout, Jones entered the arena to mild applause. But Green, with the Australian band Men at Work's song "Down Under" playing, entered the ring to an ovation moments later.
"I didn't surprise myself," said Green.
Green won the IBO cruiserweight title in Biloxi, Miss., in August with a victory over Argentina's Julio Cesar Dominguez on the undercard to Jones' NABO light heavyweight championship win over Jeff Lacy.
Jones had been stopped just twice in his career, by Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson, but Green warned ahead of the fight that he could end the Sydney fight early.
"I won't name which punch, but there's one punch, if I hit him clean with it, he is going to be knocked out for a week," Green said. "His speed can baffle me, but my power -- it can hospitalize someone. My fists are like bricks."
Green has never been stopped, although he was knocked down but not out by Argentina's Omar Gonzalez in 2004.
The Australian twice lost bids for the WBC super middleweight title to Markus Beyer -- one by disqualification and the other in a split decision. He retired temporarily in March 2008 before making a comeback in April this year.
Jones, who has eight belts across four divisions from middleweight to heavyweight, was a strong betting favorite.
Green weighed in at nearly 179 pounds while Jones was at just over 179.

Stalin believes that Jones jr is years past it and he needs to hang up the gloves as soon as possible. In the 90's he was one of the best ever only behind the Soviet's finest.

Dammit.......when do these guys get the hint? RJJ is my favorite boxer of all time. But when you are that caliber of athlete, you just do not know when to stop.

It must be difficult to be an elite athlete like that, and have to contemplate stopping. Hard choice, I am sure. When you get to be at that level, some tend to think that they cannot be stopped, even by time.
