Well here is another journal for everyone's consideration. I am currently about 260 and my plan is to compete next spring. I am 43 for those of you who don't know and have been training for 5 years. Today was chest/tri's so here is the rundown and numbers

J-curl warmups for the rotator cuff
Inc db press: 45x20, 60x12, 100x10, 110x6
Flat db flyes w/feet up: 30x12, 40x10, 50x10
Dips leaning forward: bwx8x3
Cable cross: 50x15, 60x12
Tri Pressdowns: 100x15, 120x12, 150x10 3 second eccentric
OH db press: 70x12, 100x10, 140x6
Db kickbacks: 25x12, 30x10, 35x8
Rev grip pressdowns: 80x12, 90x10, 100x8

Hammer abs: 50x20, 60x15, 70x15
Just threw those in cause I had a minute or two to kill before I left. I am currently using protein, bcaa's, multi, efa's and a pre-workout drink from dymatize. I'll throw up a pic or two and update this to chart my progress and try and keep myself accountable.

Nice workout bucki! Doesn't it suck trying to hoist a 100+ lb dumbbell above your head for OH extensions? I have to get someone to hoist it up for me at the gym now. Once I get up to 110 or more, I just can't get it up to my shoulder w/out wearing myself out.

Good luck on your quest. I'll be following along. Any idea what show you wanna do?

I am going to do the Gem city Classic in Dayton OH in 2010. I was going to do it this year but had some things get in the way. I will not be stopped next year though!

Well here is day 2. The workout was a little less energetic than usual I had zero carbs prior to wo and I felt it. Had the usual eggs for breakfast but forgot my carbs. I had my multi, and pre wo drink and off to the gym.

pulldown warm ups 120x10x2
WG pulldowns: 150x12, 180x10, 210x8, 240x8
bentover bb rows: 225x10, 275x8, 275x6
WG seated rows: 120x12, 150x10, 180x8, 210x8
Straight arm pulldowns: 80x15, 100x10, 110x8
Precor preacher: 60x15, 80x12, 100x10, 120x8
Dual incline db curls: 30x10, 40x8, 45x6
Db 1 arm preacher: 35x8, 40x8
crossbody hammers: 35x10, 40x10, 45x8
Db wrist curls 40x15, 40x12

The workout definitely lacked the usual "pop". I got a good pump but it was alabor to say the least. I will post some pix this weekend to let you see how bad I look prior to starting the "big cut" .

Nice back work Bucki.

My back is a lagging part for sure, what are your thoughts on building thinckness and lower lat width? (keep in mind I have torn discs so I am somewhat limited). My lats are real high and when I turn sideways I disappear as well. I feel like it is somewhat genetic as far as shape but I also know I have plenty of room for growth and I am far from tapped out.

Hey Steve. I have focused on my lower lats with underhand pulldowns and they are usually part of my routine. I try and alternate between width workouts and thickness workouts for my back.

Hammer shoulder: 90x10, 180x8, 220x6
Uni db lateral: 25x10, 30x8, 35x6
Upright smith row: 90x10, 120x8, 140x8
Rear db laterals: 35x10, 40x8, 45x7
OH rope extensions: 70x10, 90x10, 110x8
V-bar pressdowns: 130x10, 150x10, 170x10, 190x8 (150xf) (120xf)
D handle crossbody: 40x10, 50x10, 60x10, 65x8
Db ext ss/ 25x10, 35x8, 40x8
bench dips 10x3

Pretty decent workout. Met a guy today who may be doing the show with me next spring. He is 50+ so he'll be in the next class. I may have someone to push me and hold me accountable daily basis in the gym.

Leg ext warmups: 80x15, 90x15, 110x10
Bb squats: 135x10, 225x10, 315x8, 405x6, 455x3 these are quads parallel to the floor!
Leg press 10x10, 12x8, 14x8 (45lb plates)
Leg Ext: 150x15, 190x12, 250x12
lying leg curls: 70x12, 90x12, 110x10, 140x8, 160x6
Stand calf: 10x15, 12x15, 14x10 Not sure what the weight is becuase the numbers were wore off years ago.
Seated calf: 90x20, 135x15, 135x15

Hammer abs: 50x20, 60x20, 80x15
Dec abs: 12x12x10
Alt crunch: 15, 15

All in all a pretty decent workout. Just had a new Vitamin Shoppe open up in the area and went and stocked up today :) Have a good Friday night all!

I used to do legs on Monday or earlier in the week but I do them at the end after delts on Thursday and that gives me the weekend to recover!!

It takes me typically about 45-55 minutes to get my workout in. I don't take a great deal of time in between sets. I work out alone so there is very little drag time. Thanks for checking in.

Cable Row: 180x8, 225x8, 195x10
Rope Pulldown: 105x10, 135x10, 112.5x12
St. arm pulldown: 70x12, 90x12, 110x12

Ez bar curls: 70x12, 70x10, 90x6, 100x6, 80x8
Ez bar low cable curl: 80x12, 90x10, 130x8, 130x8, 110x10
Inc db: 35x8, 35x8, 30x10
Alt Hammers:40x12, 35x12, 30x12
The last set of hammers those 30's felt like 60's!!! My arms were freakin done!!! Pumped and shot!
So there are these two guys in the gym who both are soft (fat) and they are critiquing my workout but not actually speaking to me. This is priceless!!! I hear the one explaining how too much muscle and you lose your flexibility and I thought you'll never have that problem. He's doing seated db curls with either 15's or 20's and laughing his way through the entire set and bullshitting! This guy is probably 190 and fat with man tits and giving his obviously ignorant workout partner the finer points of training. I love this stuff!!!

and you can lose flexibility so just make sure to stretch... gotta love the gym buttheads...

I normally take Wed's off but I got so much going on this weekend I am hitting it each day this week. Delts/traps:D

db laterals warm ups: 15x20, 17.5x12, 17.5x12
Hammer Shoulder: 90x12, 140x10, 180x8, 270x6
Seated db laterals: 25x10, 30x10, 35x8
Front bb raise: 50x8, 60x8, 70x6
rear db laterals: 30x10, 35x10, 40x8
btb bb shrugs: 180x10, 230x10, 230x8
db shrugs: 85x12, 95x12, 105x10, 110x10

Had some protein and carbs post workout and headed to work. Not a bad training session. Never done 270 on the hammer before. I probably could have gotten 300 but I didn't try.

Thanks all. I did quads this am and was not feeling it at all. It stormed all night last night and hearing that kept waking me up so I slept like crap which in turn led to a piss poor workout. I don't think I am even going to post it. Thanks for checking in and it's arms tomorrow and the Friday night mixer for my class reunion. Got pump up the guns for the show tomorrow night :)

I gotta share this. So yesterday I am at the gym doing arms. Working on a new arm program and a guy who I see around comes over to me and starts making conversation. He tells me I am looking thick and I tell him I am starting to lose a little weight as well as making sure I am getting enough protein. Well, a few minutes later I am doing bb wrist curls and he walks over and kind of leans in and says, "What are you taking?" I told him nothing just trying to eat better and being more diligent with my supps. He says, "No, really what are you taking?" I said, "Dude, I not taking anything!" He rolls his eyes and says, "Ok, whatever." and then he walks away. It's days like that that make you think your doing something right.

Db oth ext: 85x8, 100x8, 110x8

db curls: 30x10, 35x10, 40x10
oh db singles: 30x10, 35x10, 40x10

Low single cable curls: 40x12, 50x12, 60x12
V bar: 140x12, 160x12, 190x12

bb wrist curls: 65x12, 65x12, 65x10, 65x10 These roll all the way down to my fingertips
Alt hammers: 40x12, 45x12, 50x12, 55x12

Arms were freakin pumped and veiny!!! Had the post workout usual. Ok so my class reunion was last night. It went pretty well. I drank some last night which I normally don't do. I got some incredible looks and comments and a lot of questions about training, nutrition, and all sorts of stuff. I think a lot of the girls I went to school with were shocked. I was pretty decent sized in HS but most 43 years olds aren't built like me. :) Have a good weekend everyone!

If you want thickness it's one of those exercises you can't avoid. I believe it's a core exercise just like bench, squat and deads!

I have tried just about everything, and volume seems to work the best. I used to go by the 3-4 sets per exercise, 3 exercises per bodypart and it just did not work. I've trained everything 2-3 times a week, high intensity, etc. Volume just works for me. Heavy and hard all the way through. No dogging it.

Worked out @ the Y today instead the regular gym

str. arm pulldowns 3 sets to finish the pump

Not sure if I should be taking some sort of joint support or not. I never have. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Man you sound like a Cards fan. Our offense blows dude! Last weekend was a fluke IMO. And Wellemeyer is a joke. Why LaRussa and Duncan keep letting him pitch is beyond me. He's had maybe 4 good outings this year. Thompson isn't much better, and Piniero is shaky at times.

Yesterday was a pretty random training day which I very seldom do. I trained: traps/abs/calves/hams. It was a good workout and I am giving my quads a break this week because I think when I get some of this weight off my quads may overpower my upper body. So I am training quads about once every 10 days and everything else weekly. Here's the numbers from yest:

db shrugs: 85x20, 100x20, 110x20, 115x15, 125x15
Hammer crunch: 4x20
calves supersetted seated and standing calf extensions
lying hams: 80x20, 100x15, 120x12, 140x10
Seated hams: 90x15, 105x10, 115x10

No cardio today but I'll get it this weekend.

Well I went to the gym and hit arms today even though I keep saying I am doing a 2/1/2/2 split I went anyway. I totally blasted the arms and a sometime training partner did part of the workout with me before work. My arms were swole and veiny. Don't have my journal with me for the numbers but I did weigh (against my better judgement) and I am down 6lbs. It was a late afternoon weigh in so apparently the diet and cardio are working :). I know it will slow down and it's primarily H2O but that's okay!

Off day today. Will get in some cardio this evening. I tried Muscletech Anabolic Halo yesterday. That was different. Felt sort of cooling on the body post workout. Tasted like shit (fruit punch arctic). Glad it was only a sample and I didn't pay for it.

Muscletech products are the nastiest tasting things ever. I had some Nitro Tech Hardcore that I got as a free sample w/ a bb.com order, so I took it to a ball game a couple weeks ago and drank it there. I almost threw it up on the guy in front of me. It was so disgusting. Everything they make now tastes shitty. Seems like back in the day when I used Cell Tech and Nitro Tech they were actually good.

They make moves, but normally it's from the junk bin. This year has turned out to be 2 definite quality moves in DeRosa and Holliday. We'll see about Lugo. The Red Sux had just sent him down to Pawtucket before we got him. But he has definitely been productive since he came over. The Reds just kinda fell off after the break though man...

I think the losing is getting to him. He is arguing a lot of called strikes and check swing from the first and third base umps. I don't know but it seems like the strike zone is getting bigger and wider and there is zero consistency from one crew to the next.

I've noticed that a lot. The umps last night at the Cards/Dodgers game were awful. No consistency and one completely obsurd call at first base when Carp tagged out the runner by 2 feet!

Not a bad workout today. Had my 35 grams protein and 60grams carbs post workout. Cardio tonight after work.
