The event starts at 4pm, I was hoping strongman.tv would have a live stream like last year, but unfortunately they are not. Anyone going to see this event live?

good events
competitors look like a tough group

Hell yeah, its great that Koklyaev is competing. Jean Louise-Phillipe is a really good up-and-comer, I bought the Fortissimus 2008 dvd and he looked great in that event. The way the events are set up, it looks like Derek's event to lose. My top 3 are:

Poundstone-1st
Koklyaev-2nd
Wenta-3rd

I'd like to see Derek and Travis finish 1 and 2.

Travis and Felix are top 5 for sure. Felix alot of times will start out really strong, and fade out later in the competition. Travis is still improving, he gets better every time I see him. In the 2008 WSM qualifier, his performance in the keg toss is probably one of the most amazing strength feats I have ever seen. Check out the video @6:35

Travis is a beast. He soundly defeated everyone at the Europa.
this is really his second year going at it in WSM and the qualifiers. a totally different type event than IFSA was.

HITstrongman

I believe in the next 2-3 years Travis will be #1 or #2 for sure. He has enough brute strength to hang with the IFSA guys, and is explosive and quick enough for the WSM events.

i have to admit i think it's Derek's year.

Derek will definitely dominate for the next few years, he just doesnt have any weaknesses. He says that his pressing is weak, but compared to the other athletes it doesnt look too weak to me. At Fortissimus 2008 when he lifted the Louis Cyr stone, that was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. I predict that he will beat Mariusz' record of 5 WSM wins before he retires.

I would prefer a professionally shot version. I bought the GMV 2007 Strongman Battles of Strength dvd, and it has the 2007 arnold strongman. The footage quality was the absolute worst that I have ever seen. The idiot camaraman was zoomed in so close on the circus dumbbell event that they had to keep panning up and down with every rep, gave me a fucking headache.

Yeah, thats pretty sick. Your arms and shoulders would be so fried, and having to do stones last after all that is insane. Arent the stones here alot heavier than the WSM finals?

It doesnt surprise me that Travis won the stones, thats why they call him "The Texas Stoneman". He held the IFSA stones WR for a long time.

Derek Poundstone Levels the Field at the Mohegan Sun by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2009 IronMind

Coming into the debut of the Giants Live tour, Derek Poundstone told IronMind that he thought he could win every event at the Mohegan Sun - in the end, only Travis Ortmayer stopped that prediction from coming true.

http://www.ironmind.com/ironmind/opencms/system/galleries/ironmind/derek-414_lg.jpg
Using a reverse grip to continental the unwieldy weight, Poundstone then pressed this 414 pounds for a new world record on the Apollon’s Axle. Presenter Colin Bryce called it the highlight of the contest and said that he wished there had been a decibel meter to measure the crowd’s response as they roared for Poundstone as he made this lift. Randall J. Strossen photo.

Poundstone is developing a history of making bold predictions about his performances at the Mohegan Sun and then backing them up. Last year, he said that he was the man to beat Mariusz Pudzianowski, and that’s just what he did. This year, coming in heavier, stronger and in better condition, Poundstone was something of a runaway train - rolling through the events and looking like nothing in his path could slow him down.

In the end, though, on the last stone on the last event, it was Travis Ortmayer who did not one, but two things that nobody else had done: Ortmayer loaded all five Atlas stones and he beat Poundstone on an event and leaving him with a five for six day.

Here are the top eight and their final points:

1. Derek Poundstone 59 points
2. Travis Ortmayer 51.5
3. Brian Shaw 39
4. Louis-Philippe Jean 39
5. Johannes Arsjo 32
6. Mikhail Koklyaev 28
7. Mark Felix 25.5
8. Terry Hollands 22.5

Poundstone, Ortmayer and Shaw qualified for the 2009 World’s Strongest Man contest by virtue of their top three finishing positions.

Shaw and LPJ were tied but only Shaw qualified? That doesnt make any sense.

it would go by placings in events
if that was a tie it would go by their weight, lighter guy winning.

Yeah, seeing him compete now reminds me of when Mariusz, Magnusson, Kazmaier or Sigmarsson were in their prime. I predict that he will beat Maruisz' five WSM titles before he retires.
