Is it beneficial or detrimental? Tried this for the first time after leg day and didn't really have any soreness in my quads. Thoughts, suggestions, ideas?

From what I've read and heard alternating between hot and cold is best. I think it's called contrast water therapy.

Yeah, here's a link.

I don't know that I would ever bother. A relaxing hot shower sounds better to me :D.

I also read a study that said cold water immersion would speed recovery the most. But it's got to be immersion, a cold shower won't cut it.

Ditto.

I think bringing body temp up PWO wouldn't be a good thing. Your BP is already up, you've already lost body water: why would you want to increase those further?

I believe they said that cold water immersion will reduce swelling, and increase blood flow. Both of those will reduce recovery time. You may notice most American pro football teams have an ice bath in the locker room for this reason.

This is the massage therapist in me talking here, so bear with me.

Heat is always going to promote inflammation. Post workout, cool will always be better, so try hitting the showers that way. Doesn't have to be frigid, but cooler than your body temp. Contrast treatments work great if you go 5 minutes of heat and 2 minutes of cold for 3-4 cycles usually. If you're doing it at home for just a localized area, like quads for example, try putting a heat pad on (hydrocolator pack if you have access to one works even better) for the 5 minutes, then for the cool instead of a full ice pack try using a frozen dixie cup of water. Peel the cup back a bit and continuously move the ice over the muscle drying as needed. Just make sure you always finish with cold to get the body back to its normal temperature at the end. Otherwise heat can promote blood pooling in the area.

supposedly heat after a workout was to increase heat shock protein activation... but you can just take Muscletech's myoshock with its 400 mg of caffeine per serving and you won't need the hot shower or hot tub then....

Thoughts, suggestions, ideas? My advice is to stay out of the hot tub and enjoy the soreness. I know the heat makes you feel relaxed but it can over heat your body and throw off your eloctrolytes-hence making you feel over-trained!

Hot and cold therapy will increase cortisol. There is always a trade-off
