what is the advantage to something like this?

It's very similar to the bamboo bar that is used to rehab rotator cuff issues in that is delivers oscillating kinetic energy through the bar (turns on stabilizer muscles). I used the bamboo bar with some folks, but never thought of it as a get huge kind of exercise..this bar is kind of the next level of that. They have actually done some pretty extensive testing on it for bench pressing and they have shown increases in muscle activation..I think it was like 20%. Does this mean you'll get huge..heck I don't know, but it very different. They are testing this on squats at the university now.
So the verdict is still out on exactly what the best application of this bar really is....one thing that is kind of cool is that the powerlifters with banged up shoulders at the gym (EliteFTS) were all using this bar pain free on overhead presses.

John is always finding ways to keep constant tension on the muscle. It is brutal stuff.
