    Default 1980 Mr America AAU

Gary Leonard. He is still in great condition as he does both cardio and weight lifting. His diet is also good to be as lean as he is, but the Elk and Deer around here in Northern Idaho (30 miles from Canada) would like to see us eat more chicken. There is honestly more game than people. No pics

He weighs 180lbs now @ 57 years old and is still strong as we loaded a 500lb commercial freezer on my trailer yesterday. His Mr America belt is in the display cabinet at the gym.

The 1980 Heavyweight class was preceded by guest posing by Ray Mentzer followed by solo posing by contestants John Brown, Billy Arlen, Rufus Howard, Gary Leonard, Marlon Darton, Greg (Rocky) DeFerro, John Kemper and Lance Dreher.

The Heavyweight posedown was said by some of the judges to rival the quality of a typical Mr. Universe contest. This was one of the toughest and best heavyweight line-ups ever seen in a Mr. America contest.

The posedown featured Kemper, Arlen, DeFerro, Leonard (the winner of the class) and Dreher.

Next was the overall Mr. America posedown between the four class winners. It was a narrow victory for Gary Leonard (pictured below with his massive trophy) over Bronston Austin, with the trophy presented by Lou Ferrigno.

Curt what is stunning is that line up of also-rans. Dreher, Brown, Howard, Teufel, Glass, etc. etc. These men dominated the mags as amatuers in 1980 on. The AAU reigned in those days.

yeah when I first started training in 77 the AAU Mr. America was probably only behind the Olympia in popularity.I remember Dave Johns and Leonard and when Tony Pearson won it was controversial.Ron Teufel was one of my favorites that seemed destined to win it but never did.

He was a favorite of mine to win. He knew how to use insulin to his advantage. He was incredibly thick compared to the others.

Gary nailed his conditioning that year- like Ray the year before-he peaked perfectly. How'd you like to have to beat Greg Deferro AND Lance Dreyer?? Hmmm. And you're not done yet.. Too bad he didn't do more in the pros- but maybe he didn't want to risk it.

He had a job and a few years later got married (still is to the same wife) and had a family. You all know the situation.... priorities. He shows no regrets that I can see. If he had the desire, he could step on the stage next year at around 180 and place well. I do not post often, but I just wanted to speak of a example of how "long term" lifting can make you a physical and mental work of art regardless of trophies. Heavy DG, your last sentence probably nailed it too.

Middleweight winner, Richard Baldwin, my mentor in bodybuilding, still looks remarkable in his early 60's.

Teufel drank himself to death, sadly.
