    Default Ruptured Disc

Anyone on here have experience dealing with bulging or ruptures on their lumbar disc specifically L-4-5 or L5-S1? I am looking for alternatives to surgery like exercises and stretches that can help the disc heal itself. I have read tons of stuff out there but I want to hear it from someone that actually cured and rehab their self. I would appreciate ANY input because I need all the help I can get. Thanks.

By the way I tried massage therapy, acupuncture, 2 different chiropractors, and 2 different orthopedic surgeons. One surgeon thinks I should get surgery right away while the other says I should avoid it unless it's absolutely necessary because of the low success rates. I wont get into it on here but it seems like surgery is definitely bad from all of the literature out there.

I have bulging discs in the same areas. I've had an MRI and met with an ortho spine specialist (also works with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Columbus Crew). The spine specialist said that I didn't require surgery and that sports physical therapy would help me heal. I have been in PT for two months and am feeling much better. My pain was 100% in the glute, hip, and leg areas with numbness in my feet. My pain level is now 40% and is localized to the back. I am doing lots of core and back strengthening exercises in PT three days a week and have stretches that I have to complete twice a day everyday. I am also receiving 15 minutes of heat and Tens Unit therapy and 15 minutes of traction three days a week during PT. I would strongly suggest speaking to your doctor about referring you to a spine specialist who deals with athletes, as well as a PT who deals with athletes.

These are the types of messages I love to read! They give me hope and help me stay positive. At this point some solid PT is the only thing I haven't tried along with losing some extra weight that I don't need to be carrying around. I have an appointment with the spine Dr. next week so I will see if he can refer a good PT. I am not sure how much my insurance will cover but at this point I don't even care anymore. Thanks for sharing your experience.

STRENGTHEN YOUR CORE!!! That is the only thing that will help besides surgery....from my experience. Work on abs, obliques etc. and lose any excess weight. I have tried everything and this is the only thing that works. Good luck

I totally agree with benzoj and TheRage93. I'm currently seeing a spine specialist and an am in physical therapy for bulging discs. Any and every weighted exercise that you can do on/with the stability ball or bosu ball will force you to engage the core much more to help strengthen it as well as help strengthen the back. Also, exercises using the TRX Suspension Strap and RIP trainer has been extremely helpful! Any variety of planks is awesome as well. All of this has helped me get back to where I have minimum to no pain and just started my contest prep. Best of luck and hope you're feeling better soon!

Any time...glad I could help! I hope you've been able to workout the insurance aspect and have found a good PT, it has been critical to my recovery. I am to the point where I have very little pain now and have really been able to ramp up my training with my coach. I've had to cycle of spinal lumbar eprideral injections to further reduce the pain and inflammation. Your insurance should hopefully cover that too. What made it easier for me was that my primary care physician referred me to the PT and spine specialist so the insurance company never questioned anything. Since I had met my deductible for the year, I have unlimited visits to the PT, my Tens Unit was covered along with monthly shipments of electrodes, and all three of my lumbar injections which would have been $500 each are covered! Thanks goodness!

I have disc herniation at L-4-5 or L5-S1, in the past i have had nerve blocks and they have worked very well for me. Chiro, physio and acupuncture did not work for me. Strengthening my core helped a lot but still have constant lower back pain in the disc area but does not radiate to my leg or glute. My experience with lower back pain (12 years) is that there isn't a total cure only pain management. Stay positive and best of luck.

Bulging discs will heal up with PT and time. Ruptured discs do not heal and all of the PT and differing therapies in the world will not make it better. I know. I blew my L4-L5 out in a rocket attack in Iraq. Tried for 2 years to treat it avoiding surgery. Finally gave in and had an artificial disc put in. I feel 100% better. No numbness, shooting pains, or complete loss of the use of my legs. Thankfully I never crapped on myself do to nerve damage. I still have to deal with the arthritis which comes with damage to the lower back but I will take it versus what I had before.

^^^Wow CDR is something I was looking into but found out I was not a candidate since I have multiple levels that are damaged. Thanks for all the replies and advice folks. It's been a while since I checked this thread but I have been through hell and back. I never did get better and ended up in the hospital for a week after not being able to walk. Long story short I have realized that if you're fucked up bad enough nothing can help but serious medical attention. I lost around 40 pounds of weight and took some strong steroids that gave me ulcers but at least I can walk without limping again. Haven't been able to workout in a while but I lost interest in it all since the injury. It's like I'm blaming lifting for all my injuries. So I bought this book called Convict Conditioning and will give that a try. Fuck being big it costs too much and fucked me up permanently LOL. My advice to you all that are still healthy is to train smart and to leave your egos at the door. Don't work out through any kind of pain and listen to your body. Yeah I know it's common sense but when you're into it hardcore all that stuff goes out the window. Take care yall!!

My husband has 5 ruptured discs and has a lot of pain. Believe it or not, he has gotten great relief from the Tommie Copper Compression Shirt. I've had to order a few more because he can't stand to be without it!
