If you're taking testosterone, know your blood work values.
Knowing exactly how testosterone is effecting you on the inside is important. Side effects of testosterone replacement and even more so with supraphysiological doses of testosterone replacement used by bodybuilders and other athletes include:
1. Polychythemia: thickening of the blood because of increased red blood cell production. Can lead to blood clots.
2. Lipid Elevation: Elevation of cholesterol and decrease of high density lipoprotein (the "good" HDL cholesterol.
3. Elevated estrogen level: can cause gynecomastia.
4. Elevated dihydrotestosterone levels. Although this hormone is the same as the hyperpotent Anadrol, it can cause pre-mature baldness and prostate enlargement.
Here are some tests to ask your personal health professional to order for you:
Testosterone (Free & Total)
Estradiol
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
IGF-1 (indirect measurement of HGH)
IGBP-3 (indirect measurement of HGH)
CBC
Lipid Profile
T3,T4,TSH
Please remember that in the case of testosterone levels, normal can be as low as 250. But in the Age Managemet field, (unless there is a medical reason to not replace testosterone) we suggest being in the top 10-20th percentile of normal for your age. Somewhere between 800-1000.
If you can't get your doc to order this for you, there are companies on the internet like Life Extension (LEF.org) and others that have panels that you can order and pay for yourself. The benefit of getting it done by your doc is that your insurance will pay for all (or at least most) of these tests.
You could also see or call an Age Management physician, like me, who can order and interpret lab work for you.
No matter what route you decide is best for you, get tested and know where you stand.
