ARTICLE: Bodybuilding’s Bandwagon Fans Fill The Bleachers? By Geoff Roberts
Bodybuilding’s Bandwagon Fans Fill The Bleachers?Bandwagon fans are a never-ending plague within the sports world, a constant pestilence to any true sports fan. The majority of the time bandwagon fans will love and follow a particular team or athlete only while they are on top or at least doing very well.

This is so true... Whether it's a Yankees fan or a lakers fan there are bandwagon fans all over the place. I really think this is also true with bb. It really shows a lot of people out there would rather follow than lead. I really do see this a lot with people trying to step on stage quickly.

Bodybuilding is a cult sport (don't kill the messenger, I hate the reality of it, but it's still the truth I'm afraid). I think any fans filling the bleachers would be great.
The Olympia & the Arnold literally have to turn people away. They're just THAT successful and well known.
However, some of the local shows, held at high school auditoriums for example, would gladly take any fan that paid for their ticket, sat down and/or patronized the vendors' tables and such.
Ideally, we'd want fans in the sport that know about its history and appreciate the hard work of EVERY competitor, but as long as the seats are filled - I think bodybuilding can't stand to be a picky as basketball, football, baseball, or hockey.
The sport of bodybuilding shouldn't turn anyone away. Just my two cents.Last edited by MITM; 09-04-2013 at 06:21 PM.

I agree with Christian. The fan base is so small that ANY fans are a plus for the sport. Not to mention those band wagoners are the ones that buy up extra merch so it's a win/win situation IMHO.

I agree that ANY bodybuilding fan is a good one, but im a little confused. Why do you bring up "turning fans away"? Nowhere in the article does it say we should "turn away" or shun or do anything to bandwagon fans. Its just discussing how quickly bb fans change their pics based on single showings and hype.

So Jay will place ahead of Kai because he has always placed ahead of Kai. Shawn will make top three despite the fact he has never beaten Kai at the Olympia. Bloody fair weather fans!

Good read but I find that labeling someone a fair weather fan in a subjective sport odd. Every other sport is judged by rules and definitions of a "point scoring" system where as BB is scored based on individual thoughts. People deciding they want this guy to win, or that guy is based off their own idea of who looks better. Why can't people go through fazes?? What if they begin their love for bodybuilding admiring smaller "aesthetic" guys but grow to like the monster look?? Did no one love the look of Zane but grow to admire the larger look of Dorian or Coleman???

Interesting read....like Goble I don't necessarily agree with some of the rationale - as history is not always destined to repeat oneself. I do give the author mad props for a well thought out topic, fwiw it compliments Hansen's writing, in its quality. A far cry for the better from what was churned out in the past!
